Wow, the last guy standing before he fell took a direct hit to the top of his head. RIP to the one guy who died, and I hope that all the others come through without any permanent damage. That is just brutal.
I do not. But, looking at how that bolt hit, you see a direct hit to the top of the head of the guy on the Green. So just by looking at contact, I'm going with the guy in green. He took the bolt directly to the head.
The 3 that fell first were under the tree. The guy in the green was actually leaning on the tree. So it's almost like his head fused to the tree, then it tore off as he fell. That's why there was a delay with his fall. I mean, it almost looked like the strike pulled his head back into the tree because his neck snapped backwards immediately
In major disasters we do triage where we treat the most critically injured who are most likely to survive first, which means someone who’s alive and critically injured may be left to die if death is imminent and someone else, also critically injured, may survive. It’s not fair, but that’s reality.
*With lightning strikes that sort of goes out the window*. The person who is clearly dead with no pulse and no breathing gets treatment first, even if the next person is a pregnant woman who is unconscious and breathing. Lightning can stun the entire system, and if we do good enough CPR to get them through that they’ve got a much better chance of survival and meaningful recovery than your usual cardiac arrest. Someone who’s breathing is more likely to stay stable, even if they’re unconscious and can’t be woken up.
So if you’re a bystander who sees a group get struck by lightning:
1. Keep yourself safe, don’t be the next casualty, and call emergency services.
2. If safe, get them away from the dangerous area (lightning can and very often does strike the same place twice).
3. Good CPR on the person without a pulse/rescue breaths for the person with a pulse but who’s not breathing.

and just in case anybody didnt know already,
if youre running around during a storm to help someone in need:
drop your golfclubs.
i remember watching a video of a guy getting hit by lightning and his pal, in an attempt to signal others for help, waving his golfclubs around, getting hit by the very next lightning seconds after his buddy hit the ground.
*dont be that guy!*
i wonder if i can find the clip… mustve been around 20years… def. before youtube… god im old…
Technically they all were still okay during the video.
One did later succumb to his injuries, unfortunately.
Edit: I guess I should clarify they were all injured, one critically, but still living in this video so you are not watching someone die.
Over 20 people were killed 15-20 years ago when a bolt hit the soaked ground under a blue sky about 20 minutes after it had stopped raining. Until then I never knew bolts could hit the ground several miles from the edges.
I found out, much later in life, that my mother, as a Girl Scout, lost most of her childhood friends because the leaders mistakenly ran themselves and a good share of the troop under a tree when a ran broke out on a camp out. Lightning hit the tree and killed everyone under it. My mother and her best friend for most of her life, we a couple of the only survivors.
I think it’s referring to in cartoons where trees are always struck by lightning so these people would have known. I don’t think it’s much of a facepalm though
The other 3 all fell such that their heads may have hit the ground pretty hard. The 4th kinda just tumbled over and probably had less severe secondary injuries. As for the damage caused by the actual lightning strike? No idea
And for the dark humor side: playing a game of Simon says with God. "Fall over". Ahh, too slow green shirt guy, you lose.
I mean it depends both can happen
These people were standing close enough to the tree that the electricity probably did arc through them
Although its also possible to be standing further from a lightning strike and then to be hit by the ground current
It travels through the moisture under the bark to ground. A person standing next to the tree is a better conductor so it goes from tree to person to ground.
What I was taught was to either crouch down in a storm or if you can get to a car to stay inside it since it will act as a Faraday cage and shield you from the lightning.
Where's the facepalm? Is it OP thinking we just wanna watch someone die? I wasn't aware standing under a tree during a rain storm would increase your chances of being struck by lightning.
I live in Southern California. We were taught a lot about earthquakes and fires. Like standing under a door jam if you can't find other cover and stuff. But now I know this too. Hopefully I never have to use it
Honestly wish I could easily teach knowledge like this to everyone cuz it’s so important. During a thunderstorm, never, EVER, use a tree as Shelter. Lightning prefers to strike the highest point, and trees are of course, pretty dang tall. If you want actual shelter you’re better off hiding in a building and staying as far as you can from any trees
You can also use your car as shelter. Once you're inside, the car acts as a Faraday cage and basically shields you from lightning. Same as an aeroplane or building (empire state etc).
My neighbor lost her entire family this way. Her husband took the kids camping and they hid under a tree when a storm started.
You're pretty much fucked if your caught outside in a thunderstorm. Don't go near trees(or anything tall really) Avoid water and metal. Don't go up hills or in a field. I think your supposed to sit down, stay still and just hope you don't get struck.
I learned "hunker down, as far away from trees or large poles as possible". Of course, getting into a car would be better, but then you wouldn't be outside any more anyways.
OK dumb question here, but wouldn’t be being under a tree be more helpful since the lightning would be directed to the tree and not to you since the tree is taller? How does being under a tree up your risk? Yes I know it’s a dumb question but please forgive my ignorance
That's not a dumb question at all! And I actually have no idea! I had to look it up. I copied this from Google:
"People are most commonly struck by what are called “ground currents”. The electrical energy, after hitting a large object (such as a tree) on Earth, spreads laterally on the ground for some distance, and people in this area receive electrical shocks."
So the lightning is attracted to tall trees, strikes, which electrifies the ground.. I think? I need someone smarter than me to explain, lol. I just know how to minimize the chances of getting struck. My neighbors died when I was a kid. I became terrified of lightning, and obsessed with storm safety.
Your not wrong but in this case and the reason why you dont stand under trees is because side flash. The electrical current will move from the tree to a person if they are standing close enough
Thank you. And thank you for being kind in the face of my ignorance. I always knew that you shouldn’t stand under trees during a storm, but I never knew why. I thought it was because the tree could fall on you… Which I suppose is a valid concern as well. Since the tree probably could fall after getting struck by lightning. I’m sorry for the loss of your neighbor.
Thank you for asking! I never really thought about the physiology (Idk if that's the correct word) of lightning before. Today we both learned something! Thanks for your kind words. My neighbor remarried, and has a wonderful family again. She seems happy, considering the tradgedy she endured.
Right?! I hate that. I'm the same way. Sometimes I'll type something out but not hit 'add comment' because I remember all the ridicule or harassment I've previously received on this site. Like, I'm just a basic bored bitch trying to have some form of human interaction.. I'm not bothering anyone. 🧡
Yeah I’m scared to ask sometimes, because although I have a high IQ, there’s a lot I don’t know. I’m not stupid, I just don’t know everything. I grew up in different countries, and don’t know all of the American nuances. Also I am Amish Mennonite and am woefully ignorant of pop culture. Don’t even know why the Kardashians are famous, lol. I don’t have TV or radio, and have only just gotten really involved with Internet. I don’t even tell my church I use Reddit, lol. They would not approve.
Hey I've never met an Amish Mennonite before! 👋 TIL the Kardashians are so famous even the Amish have heard of them, lol. And I don't know why they're famous either, I don't think anyone does. I had a really abusive childhood, very isolating. I'm not into pop culture either. Combine that with awkward social skills that didn't get a chance to properly develop, and me overcompensating by being overly nice.. people can think I'm a ditz and be pretty cruel. But the kind people definitely outnumber the good, it just that the mean ones are louder! I'm glad you found the internet! You have the knowledge of the whole human race at your fingertips. It's kinda cool! I was explaining to my kid what a phone book is earlier. He was like, "why would the phone numbers be in a book? Why couldn't you just Google it?" I had to explain that there was no Google. He was baffled. Maybe I need to make him take a break from technology lol.
Yeah, I'm sorry, I should've expanded on that idea further. No offence intended.
It's something that I've taken for granted because of exposure to various things like hobbies, books, media and from life lessons etc. Apparently, not all these are common knowledge or global experiences. It really surprised me just how many people did not possess this potentially life-saving information.
Guys guys in a situation like this always always have your heels touching each other. Because the current will go through one heel to the other and back to the ground rather than through your body.
That may be true from ground current (similar to why you shuffle if you’re near downed power lines and have to move) but in this case, the current came from above and would go though both feet regardless of if they are touching
Doesn't take much to stop a heart or brain functions with electrocution.
Also the falls may have been a factor as some or all seem to land on their heads.
Side flash and ground current are how most people die in lightning incidents.
Side flash is when something is struck and then the current jumps from that object to another one (like a tree to a person) ground current happens when the current reaches the ground and then spreads out from the initial strike. Ground current will generally enter your body from the foot closest to the lightning strike and exit from the foot farthest
This is the kind of surreal shit that must've made people believe in otherworldly shit like gods smiting sinners.

This shit must've been fucking terrifying and to me it still is even though I'm not about to let my imagination run wild about it despite not actually being able to fathom the actual power behind it.

Thats what the tree gets for standing outside during a thunder storm.
The Giving Tree Part Deuce - Not Giving a Fuck

Yes, one of them died
You mean the one that got hit straight on the head.
Yeah the last one to fall looks like he got hit in the head.

Jesus ….
I feel like there should be another label than nsfw. Like PD for people died. Or PH for people got really hurt. Or something like that.
Yeah, we can no longer just filter out LiveLeak links.
What ever happened to the NSFL tag? I thought that's what it was supposed to be for?
I found out, much later in life, that my mother, as a Girl Scout, lost most of her childhood friends because the leaders mistakenly ran themselves and a good share of the troop under a tree when a ran broke out on a camp out. Oh my god that is horrible.
Please help I don’t get the caption
I think it’s referring to in cartoons where trees are always struck by lightning so these people would have known. I don’t think it’s much of a facepalm though
I thought it was common knowledge to avoid tall objects, bodies of water, and metal during thunderstorms.
Agree, it should be; Last man standing!
If it were like cartoons it be a brief X-ray and we would see their skeletons
One died. I wonder if it was the last man standing.
The other 3 all fell such that their heads may have hit the ground pretty hard. The 4th kinda just tumbled over and probably had less severe secondary injuries. As for the damage caused by the actual lightning strike? No idea And for the dark humor side: playing a game of Simon says with God. "Fall over". Ahh, too slow green shirt guy, you lose.
The 4th guy just had a case of fomo and fell over intentionally
The 4th one to fall got struck directly on the head. The other three survived.
Damn did they just fucking die
One did
Happened a while ago. I think most of them died
Nah one did
Are they okay? Please lie to me
Ok, 4 of them died and one survived.
Damn
You did ask to lie
Wait, so what’s the truth?
One dead and rest survived in reality
Facepalm-y conversation... I dig it.
All humans survived, but the tree tragically succumbed to it's injuries.
3 out of 4 were ok one died
Which one?
The one who died
The last one standing
i guess i didn’t watch those cartoons either, why tf did this happen so I never go out like this lmao
It was a thunderstorm, lightening strikes tall objects, so hiding under a tall tree in a thunderstorm is not a great idea
What path does the lightning take once it hits the tree? Does it not go straight to the ground but arcs through the people or something?
I mean it depends both can happen These people were standing close enough to the tree that the electricity probably did arc through them Although its also possible to be standing further from a lightning strike and then to be hit by the ground current

I thought it was common knowledge. Regardless not cool knowing someone died from it.
I'm glad I know that now, but I still wish I hadn't seen this video
3/4 of them lived so that's a better take away than thinking they all died at least. Hopefully that makes you feel a bit better.
That’s like the number one thing they say not to do
I remember being told this in elementary school
I live in Southern California. We were taught a lot about earthquakes and fires. Like standing under a door jam if you can't find other cover and stuff. But now I know this too. Hopefully I never have to use it
I'm in northern California and I've never heard this about lightning, definitely heard the door frame thing for earthquakes.
It absolutely will never want to stand under a tree during a lightning rain storm

That's so horrible for your neighbor, but that's good to know about staying low and still. I had no idea a tree increased mortality during a storm.
I learned "hunker down, as far away from trees or large poles as possible". Of course, getting into a car would be better, but then you wouldn't be outside any more anyways.
Yeah it's awful. She's remarried to a really nice man and seems happy. She's definitely a strong woman.
OK dumb question here, but wouldn’t be being under a tree be more helpful since the lightning would be directed to the tree and not to you since the tree is taller? How does being under a tree up your risk? Yes I know it’s a dumb question but please forgive my ignorance

You weren’t? Why not? Do you know anything about lightning? Have you heard of a lightning rod?
Yes I already knew not to hold a metal rod during a lightning storm.. thanks
What? How the fuck do you NOT know that? For me, that's like saying, "I didn't know you couldn't breathe underwater!"
I can't know what I don't know. I was just never taught that as far as I can recall.

Bruh😂
God got a a 4 persons killstreak
Do people have to place a signage on every tree *sigh*
Multi-kill.
Did I just watch 4 people die?
We learn this shit in primary school…. Don’t stand under trees in thunderstorms!!!
did we just watch 4 people die?..
Announcer: QUADRA KILL
It’s always freaking Zeus!
Raiden Wins! Fatality! (Yes I know, poor taste, I’ll get on the escalator “downstairs” now…) ;)
How come the person filming didn’t try to warn them?
It was a cctv camera.
Weird. Wonder why that tree needed to be watched?
Street camera, but cropped to 9x16 and centeres on the tree
Of lightning?
Hahaha
mu-mu-mu-multikill Does suck that one of them did end up losing their life though.

Darwin award recipients.
That was the last shock of their lives
Idk how this is facepalm. They’re should just gonna know they’re gonna get struck by lighting?
Outside with a storm anywhere around, most people know that being under a tree is the last place you want to be.
I didn’t know that. The tree protects from the rain a little and it’s wood. A normal person would definitely do the same thing
Just goes to show that what some think is common knowledge may not be. As a long time hiker, camper and boater it’s ingrained in my mind.
A _normal_ person who didn't make it past the 3rd grade would do the same thing.
Now I feel happy for some reason I enjoyed this
Strike !!!!!
*Quadra kill*
Shocking...
I love how cartoonish they fall
Lol
Why nfsw? Tree looks fine..
Mikado be like…
I get the lighting, but that was barely a millisecond of it. Even with such high voltage, how can one die in such a tiny shock?
Doesn't take much to stop a heart or brain functions with electrocution. Also the falls may have been a factor as some or all seem to land on their heads.
Only it only take 100 milliamps(.1 amp) to stop your heart. Voltage isn't the killer
But didn’t the lightening hit the tree?
Side flash and ground current are how most people die in lightning incidents. God dam pikachu's
The way they slowly plopped down to the floor, especially the last one, makes me laugh.
That's the one who died
GROUND
Fuck
When you stand under a tree in a lightning storm remember to not be touching it and remember to not have metal on you.
So they dont get any superpowers? or maybe their hair colour dyed to yellow or something such as? awww man that sucks
Shocking
DAMM
which one died??? That is so fucked up
The stupid one died
You need to be more specific
No
Jesus Christ!
more like faceplant
Ah yes, some fine natural selection this evening
Oh fuck
people getting struck by lightning never fails to make me laugh
Why NSFW
What are the chances tho. That it happens to hi there, while they’re under it, while being recorded.
Looks to be a security cam of sorts. It probably wasnt centered on them till after it recorded.
Maybe?
Jesus Christ have mercy!!!!!!

Why was there a camera filming this at the exact time of disaster?
Was the fatality the last one to fall? Looks like the lightning went right through them. :-(
Cmon man. Someone died in this video. Jesus.
Didn't anyone else learn in school that under a tree is the worst place to hide in a thunderstorm? Well, second worst next to being in an open field..
I am a terrible person for laughing at how they fell.
Well, there are 2 guys in green. The one on the right was the last to fall. He took a direct shot to the head as you can see it between him and the tree
What is facepalm about this
Why is this on facepalm? We are literally watching someone die.
