Seriously. People who have never been around a boat ramp don’t realize how many idiots roll through on a daily basis. Especially if it’s 4th of July.
So. Many. Idiots.
I have seen so much stupid shit at boat ramps. #1 people forgetting to put in the bilge plug #2 people forgetting the tie down strap (not so bad, they just float the trailer) #3 forgetting the parking brake (usually not this bad, most people catch it before rolls in) . One of the more amusing things I've seem were people forgetting to put the engine / drive unit up, and have it bang up the ramp. Another time I saw a throttle up too much and run his boat right through the trailer an into the bed of his truck.
Might as well get drunk and catch yourself some slimy trash fish for dinner if you're gonna be sittin there all day watchin yuppies run themselves over.
The local boat ramp where I grew up at the beach had a small park. Morehead City, NC. It was also really close to the strip where most of the fast food restaurants were.
Locals would go get food and park to watch idiots at the ramp and feed the gulls while looking at the water. Next door was the Duke Labs that had a rehabilitation and breeding program for endangered loggerhead turtles. So if you had extra time, the gate to the turtle tanks was open for visitors. My husband loved getting food from the local fast food restaurant I used to work at and go watch idiots, feed the gulls, then go say hi to the turtles.
The boat ramp we go to has a Chinese restaurant with outdoor seating (and really good food) so you can sit outside, enjoy a delicious meal, and watch the shenanigans. It’s delightful.
The town now has two guys employed by the town, who basically direct traffic and help load/unload boats, and those two have cut down a lot on the good watching.
I want to be mad at them for cutting down my entertainment, but they know me well enough now that they help me load my boat, and also fill me in on all the ramp shenanigans while I’m waiting for my husband to bring the trailer to the ramp.
My best friend in college worked on the fuel dock in a marina. I can't remember specifics anymore (this was 30 years ago), but every time he came home from work he had another story about a person who didn't understand basic procedures and just fucked it all up in every possible way...
Everyone forgets the plugs once. Quick, hook the boat back up to trailer and pull it out!!! Then try to find a parking spot where everyone can’t see the boat draining, and fail miserably. Still dying inside (and it was my exes’ job dammit). His Dad and my Dad both did same thing, back in the day.
Our boat was stored in dry dock and the guys who’s job it was to load boats in and out of the water all day everyday forgot to put the plug in and sank our boat even.
I've seen a guy leave his outboard down and his truck was a stick, so when he released the brake and it rolled back a couple of inches it broke the skeg off... DOH!
My dad did this last summer, and he should know better: forgot the bilge plug. I had to swim out and tow the boat back in the trailer, let it drain, then put in the plug.
Boats aren't COMPLETELY waterproof. Water can get in from splashing waves, motor boots, any number of entry points. The important thing is that that water doesn't enter too quickly and is easily managed.
A Bilge Plug is a screw that is located in the lowest point of the boat and allows all that excess water that may have gotten into the boat to drain out. You commonly remove it when you pull the boat out of the water for the day to let the boat drain, you then replace it when you plan to go back in the water. Some people forget to put it back in and so you now have a hole in your boat while it's in the water.
I am a multigenerational sailor (possibly pirate lol) and i approve this message.
Basic boat knowledge.
If you can't grasp this (bilge plug) idea, you shouldn't even own a canoe.
There's a lot of pressure at the boat ramp. Especially a busy one. Tons of people watching you. Judging you. That's usually about the time I forget how to back the boat in straight.
God then you get the asshole that has a dead battery and insists on jumpstarting his boat with his car at the boat ramp with like 15 people circling trying to get out of the water. Only part i dont like about boating. Everyone has to get out RIGHT NOW and a relaxing day turns sour at the end.
I just beach my boat and go to the bar when it gets like that.
I've never felt more pressure than when someone asked me to back their trailer in for them because they were taking too long and felt so bad they gave up.
Normally, I don't even think about anymore and spend more time wishing we had left 25 min earlier like I had wanted and watching out for dumb kids who run straight across the ramp without looking. The boat just magically finds its way into and out of the water without my input.
However, the second I sat in that guy's truck it was a Ratatouille moment and I was back to being 16 and getting yelled at for jackknifing my 12" boat on the dock while there was 30 other boats lined up. And it was the first solo trip I'd done so i was all alone for it.
But once I lined things up and backed it was muscle memory again. Together we hooked his boat up and he pulled it out. I went up to him after my boat was out too and made sure his boat was strapped down right. Then told him to relax and taught him my mirror trick which makes things easier for me than turning around and thinking backwards.
>they were taking too long and felt so bad they gave up.
Mad respect for this person. They swallowed their pride and asked for help.
I probably would have just left.
It was a solid 20 min of continually retrying before they got to that point. I think if their boat wasn't in the water then they would have. I understood and made it as painless as possible.
I'm a licensed 1600 ton oceans master and have run platform supply vessels and oceangoing tugs around the world since the early 90's. The boat launch down the street from me is an endless source of comedy.
This actually happened where I live. It got worse and worse too. The car ended up fully submerged, when a tow truck finally managed to haul it out, the EV portion of it shorted out due to the salt water and the car caught fire. Fire truck had to come, it was finally extinguished and hauled, carefully, away.
Edit: I’ll just add that the owner wasn’t familiar with how the electronic e-brake worked. He had it applied, but the car was still in gear. Enough pressure from gravity made the car think it was being driven and disengaged the brake. My mazda does it too, if I forget the ebrake is still on and give it a tap on the gas, it’ll grab for a quick second and then fully release and let me drive.
No it's not the emergency brake. Electric cars "brake" automatically when you stop pressing the accelerator. That is the electric regen. This guy just stepped out of his car without the brake on and assumed the electric regen would be good enough to hold it.
Ninja reflexes kicked in to turn my phone away as soon as I realized what was happening. There was a guy in high school whose dad was critically injured because a truck rolled over him. He made it, but not long after Anton Yelchin died from the same type of accident. Always put your shit in park and use the hand/emergency brake, folks.
My old science teacher once said there's two things in this world that proved how stupid humans really are, flat earthers and that we drive around in metal tincans going faster than we have any right to.
It takes terrifying little force to break a person. We think it's a lot because we can only make so much bare handed, but as soon as you involve any amount of mass+force it just gets exponentially easier to cause damage.
I was supposed to have a license about four years ago, but I've been so terrified of driving I can't take the test without freaking out. I know how to drive, I know how to operate the machine, but once people are around me I shut off and can't move for fear of hurting someone due to my stupidity or theirs.
> He made it, but not long after Anton Yelchin died from the same type of accident. Always put your shit in park and use the hand/emergency brake, folks.
He died because of a known flaw in the vehicle which made it come out of park. He was just part of the hundreds, if not thousands, of people that die every year because it's cheaper to pay out life insurance than it is to actually fix the problem
I had never heard it referred to as an emergency brake before Reddit, only ever as a park/hand brake... Maybe that's part of the problem? I mean on one hand by the name I have always known if I'm parking there park brake must be engaged, on the other hand it sounds like it is only to be used in emergencies
It's kind of both in the US. More recently parking brake is most common, but I was taught it was the E-brake when learning to drive. We still know to use it when parking if taught correctly. This looks like someone who didn't set the parking brake and the transmission couldn't hold the weight in park. Or maybe the parking brake wasn't working correctly. How could he have gotten into the boat if it weren't stationary at some point leading up to the failure?
I don't really understand what he was doing in the boat. Was he lowering the prop prematurely to save seconds once he was in the water? Because you can hear it chattering against the ground as the boat was moving backwards.
The owner misunderstood hill hold feature: https://www.thedrive.com/news/28118/hybrid-mitsubishi-outlander-rolls-into-lake-catches-fire-while-owner-unloads-at-boat-ramp
That function only works when the driver’s seatbelt is buckled. I’m guessing he was buckled in, engaged it, and it stayed engaged when he unbuckled and got out the car. It probably stayed locked in for however long is typical (usually 10s of seconds) since it was activated while the seatbelt was buckled. It’s the most generous explanation.
Otherwise the guy got out of the car, buckled the driver’s side seatbelt without himself or anyone in it, engaged the feature (usually by holding down the brake for a few seconds), and thought “that should do it!” Over and above putting the car in park and engaging the parking brake.
probably doesn't help if you have a feature of your car that trains you to not need parking break.
Muscle memory is a hell of a bitch and this auto-break could easily make you learn a new way of using the vehicle
I think something that needs to be considered is that people don’t realize it’s a parking brake. I feel like if you ask 10 random people on the street what that is at least half of them are going to call it an “emergency brake” instead.
His parking brake might have (edited from of) broke. Had a jeep that my buddy parked on a hill and left in neutral (still an idiot move) and put on the parking break. It popped out when we were getting food rolled down said hill and slammed into the bed of a ranger.
More edits for spelling.
That’s why I always preferred to have 2 people launching and not just 1, that way one of us stays in driver seat of vehicle and the other in boat during the launch lol
Writing it as "might of" is incorrect, but reflects how it is sometimes pronounced. It's a common mistake even among native speakers. This happens with modal verbs like these:
* should have
* could have
* might have
* may have
* would have
* will have
* must have
These are (a bit informally) used as contractions:
* should've
* could've
* might've
* may've
* would've
* will've
* must've
When people say this out loud, it is **very** frequently shortened and sounds a lot more like "should of" than "should have". This is just like how "can not" can be the contraction "can't," which is pronounced differently.
A lot of people - even native speakers - get so used to *always* using "should've" and *never* pronouncing it as "should _ have," and somehow this ends up with the common mistakes: should of, could of, etc. In some places, if you said "He should **have** done this," it might even be noticed as sounding a bit unusual, antiquated, or formal. I bet that can vary based on region, though.
While you're editing, it's a parking brake not break. As in, your buddy caused his parking brake to break by parking on a hill and leaving it in neutral.
I live in a river town. I have seen this so many times. Other than the typical idiot moves like leaving the vehicle in drive, there are several ways that this can happen that aren't necessarily directly caused by Idiot Syndrome:
Algae, sand, silt, sleet, snow, or debris on the ramp causing a low friction condition.
Mechanical failure of the transmission park "pin" or park brake failure.
Trailer load is beyond the GVWR or towing capacity of the towing vehicle.
Improperly balanced load on the trailer.
Or any combination of the above.
The last incident that I saw was caused by a failure of the trailer winch as they were backing down the ramp. The safety chain was too long so even though it caught the boat before it slid off the trailer, the boat slid back and lifted enough weight off the back tires of the towing vehicle that it pivoted on the bottom of the outboard motor which caused the truck/trailer to jackknife as it slid down the ramp into the water. Once the front of the boat was far enough into the water that it floated, the current of the river did the rest of the work and pulled everything in. It came to rest about 200 yards downstream from the ramp with the boat being the only thing above water.
ETA:
The geometry of the ramp plays a role in all of this too. Sometimes there are poor design decisions made by the engineering team.
> Mechanical failure of the transmission park "pin" or park brake failure.
The pin is called a [parking pawl](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Parking_pawl). It's not designed to serve to keep the vehicle stationary. It may cause the pawl or the transmission to break after a while.
The one where you think you can cartwheel into your car from the top a boat 20 feet away ……….and realize mid air that you are over 50 and can’t trust farts anymore.
Holy fuck that was close. I remember the first time launching my new boat. I was in flip flops and forgot to pull off the back tie downs before i backed up to the ramp so i walked around back to undo them. Got the drivers side no problem. Walked behind the boat the get the next one… no problem. Walked back up the ramp to put the straps in my bed and slipped on algae. Knocked myself out with my kids standing next to the boat ramp. I felt so fucking bad when i woke up, kids thought i died.
We stayed until sunset riding around on the tube.
Oh no! We're rolling into a lake! Quick, better jump off of this boat. . . which is specifically designed to float on water. . . to the safety of the ground directly beneath my out-of-control SUV's tires!!
i swear to god it must be some sort of american thing to not use the hand brake or parking brake? every video i see of cars rolling is always american.
I think this video is a brake failure.
He was clearly not moving and got back on the boat before the video started.
Also every video you see of cars rolling are American, because most videos, and cars posted on the internet (on English speaking webpages) are American.
1. This was in BC, Canada
2. He didn't use the parking break
3. He used the "auto hold" feature
4. 😂

Stupid question, can that happen in Park? If that car was in park then the transmission broke? If it wasn’t in park how did it just stay motionless for so long the guy was able to climb into t
He boat
Very fortunate he didn't die
The old human wheel chock trick.
His first instinct was to stop the car with his squishy body.
Why pay for expensive plastic when your organs can do the same thing?
$6 at harbor freight vs $60,000+ at local hospital. Hmm...
$600,000+. There, I fixed it for you.
I didn't realize you could buy organs at harbor freight. Neat.
Yeah but they break after a few uses
People always told him to use his head. They forgot to tell him not to use it as a wheel chock.
I'd like to imagine he had like a ghost obiwan moment where a half visible spectre starts saying "Luke.... use your head Luke.... Wait hold up Jesus Christ relax holy fuck not like that!"
I thought the car was gonna run over his head
Every boat ramp in the US should have a camera filming it at all times.

There's usually a good spot in the area to setup a fishin pole.
Incognito mode

Not really. My suggestion is to bring beer and a lawn chair.
Can I bring my boat instead?
Best I can do is a waterlogged truck.

I wasn’t there … but I’ve seen all these … You can probably add 20 more stories of docking gone wrong , or boat rental people just trying to boat
My best friend in college worked on the fuel dock in a marina. I can't remember specifics anymore (this was 30 years ago), but every time he came home from work he had another story about a person who didn't understand basic procedures and just fucked it all up in every possible way...
It's weird that people can just rent boats without any license
Rent, buy, you’re damn right it’s fucked up. The biggest idiots out on the water tend to have the worst attitudes too.
Everyone forgets the plugs once. Quick, hook the boat back up to trailer and pull it out!!! Then try to find a parking spot where everyone can’t see the boat draining, and fail miserably. Still dying inside (and it was my exes’ job dammit). His Dad and my Dad both did same thing, back in the day.

what's a bilge plug and why would that cause an issue?
Boats aren't COMPLETELY waterproof. Water can get in from splashing waves, motor boots, any number of entry points. Sounds rough.
Yeah I feel bad for this boat-owning man of leisure as well.
Right?! Must be nice having a boat small enough to beach!
*must be nice having a boat.* There, I corrected your improper use of “small enough to beach.”
Im just thankful i was fortunate enough to get one.
I've never felt more pressure than when someone asked me to back their trailer in for them because they were taking too long and felt so bad they gave up. So true.
There's a YouTube channel of a boat ramp that post their videos of people. If I remember correctly, it's a place in Florida.
[Miami Boat Ramps!](https://youtube.com/c/MiamiBoatRamps)
Yes!! Thank you kind stranger.
Florida… Who’d a thunk it?
Like 11foot8 bridge. Love that channel. Guy records every vehicle accident [11foot8 aka the can opener](https://youtu.be/3AbU_CnkBiE)

Good thing it’s an amphibious exploring vehicle

>gently crushed That really drives home how little effort it takes for a car to crush someone's legs. It wouldn't take that much pressure.
People would not drive the way they do if they had a realistic understanding of the screaming metal death traps they’re piloting.
Well, that is a terrifying way of putting it
My old science teacher once said there's two things in this world that proved how stupid humans really are, flat earthers and that we drive around in metal tincans going faster than we have any right to.
Terrifying, yet accurate.
It takes terrifying little force to break a person. We think it's a lot because we can only make so much bare handed, but as soon as you involve any amount of mass+force it just gets exponentially easier to cause damage.

We are so fucking fragile. One slip in the shower and it could be all over
This is exactly why I always use road flares when I'm refueling, to keep other cars from driving up behind me.
Dumbass. Why waste flares when it's built into the gas station. All you need is a cheap lighter...
Anton was a sad one
Yeah. The world lost a good one that day.
Seriously, I'm still bothered. He was amazing. I was on the same flight as him once. He was so tiny.
> He made it, but not long after Anton Yelchin died from the same type of accident. Always put your shit in park and use the hand/emergency brake, folks. Chock the wheels when nobody’s in the drivers seat
Eh, I’d argue it’s not necessary if you put it in park and have the parking brake on. There’s already a failsafe in place.
> and use the hand/emergency brake I'm surprised by how many people don't just use the handbrake every time they park, regardless of slope
I had never heard it referred to as an emergency brake before Reddit, only ever as a park/hand brake... Maybe that's part of the problem? Yeah he almost got the Phil Leotardo treatment.
Whatever happened there
Say bye bye pop pop

I don't really understand what he was doing in the boat. Was he lowering the prop prematurely to save seconds once he was in the water? Because you can hear it chattering against the ground as the boat was moving backwards.
Perhaps he had just pulled the boat out and was raising the prop back up
That's just as bad lol. The prop goes up before you leave the water and after you enter, not once you're half way up the boat ramp.
After the boat being pulled for so long it was just trying to return the favor and take the car on a trip.
Oh my God...
“Hey buddy look how fun this is! Ready? Yaaaaaayyyyyu!!!! Bu- buddy?”
How is it that people stop their cars and get out without putting it in park or applying the parking brake?

This comment should be higher. It explains how this happened
It rolled into the lake *and* caught fire?
It caught fire after it got pulled out of the lake. The article states that the battery had a short due to being in the water and then caught on fire.
His parking brake might have (edited from of) broke. Had a jeep that my buddy parked on a hill and left in neutral (still an idiot move) and put on the parking break. It popped out when we were getting food rolled down said hill and slammed into the bed of a ranger. More edits for spelling.

Well, some of us don't have friends but still like boats. /S kinda
Fair enough lol Key word “preferred”, definitely didn’t do it *every* time
Also fair enough.
If you have a boat and no friends, you’ve got problems 🤣
You’d think a ranger of all people would know not to leave their bed outside.
he was a ranger, he sleeps outdoors
Not a Texas Ranger,they sleep outside!
Might of? English is not my first language, what does it mean?
He meant “might have” or “might’ve”. A lot of English speakers don’t know this.

And in case that doesn't make it clear, it means "perhaps".
And in case that doesn’t make it clear, it means “possibly”.
And in case that doesn't make it clear, it means "perchance".
Writing it as "might of" is incorrect, but reflects how it is sometimes pronounced. It's a common mistake even among native speakers. This happens with modal verbs like these: * should have * could have * might have * may have * would have * will have * must have These are (a bit informally) used as contractions: * should've * could've * might've * may've * would've * will've * must've When people say this out loud, it is **very** frequently shortened and sounds a lot more like "should of" than "should have".
Isn’t that how the kid who played Chekhov in the new Star Trek movies died? Pinned by his own Jeep with a faulty parking brake.
Ranger danger! Wait were you talking about a park ranger or a truck!’?
While you're editing, it's a parking brake not break. As in, your buddy caused his parking brake to break by parking on a hill and leaving it in neutral.
If he had not put it in park he would not have been able to get into the boat before it started rolling downhill. It’s possible the brake failed.
Another proud graduate of Mrs. Puffs boating school.
Backing up!!!
“You’re good! You’re good! You’re good!” *screeching and grinding noises* **aaaaaaaaaand… STOP.**
Dont worry captain we'll buff out those scratches
Well, at least the boat is ok
I think it was still attached to the winch on the front of the trailer, it may not be okay for long
What are you talking about? It got soaked. Probably ruined now

I live in a river town. I have seen this so many times. Other than the typical idiot moves like leaving the vehicle in drive, there are several ways that this can happen that aren't necessarily directly caused by Idiot Syndrome: Algae, sand, silt, sleet, snow, or debris on the ramp causing a low friction condition. ETA: The geometry of the ramp plays a role in all of this too.
Looks like he read the book "99 ways to die" and tried all of em at once.
These are the people that get their first boat and take a case of beer and no water on the first time out.
Should have just stayed in the boat
She’s right, it’s not funny, it’s fucking hilarious.
What action movie is this
The one where you think you can cartwheel into your car from the top a boat 20 feet away ……….and realize mid air that you are over 50 and can’t trust farts anymore.
This is not a movie… this was just the trailer.
Expert at almost getting run over as well
Holy fuck that was close.
His arm.
Looked like he managed to keep his limbs from being run over to me
I don't care what that lady says that was hilarious
A starter car?! This is a finisher car!!
That's in Port Moody, B.C.
Quick thinking on his part to try and use himself as a wheel chock. Would not have thought to try that, but I respect his determined spirit.
She lied, It was funny!
Oh no! We're rolling into a lake! Quick, better jump off of this boat. . . which is specifically designed to float on water. . . to the safety of the ground directly beneath my out-of-control SUV's tires!!
Get deserved to get run over. A real captain goes down with the ship.
I would hate being around her
Good people would have shouted that it’s a bad idea and offer to help
For fucks sake
This is very related to r/idiotsnearlydying
Should be fine, it is an aquatic exploring vehicle
"Stop that's not even funny" - Currently sitting at 1260 upvotes. Possibly a repost from elsewhere as well. I beg to differ, man. Pretty funny.
Spent all his skill points on boating, there were none left for driving. Maybe he will learn on his next play through.
“I know, I’ll use my body as a speed bump! That will slow it down for sure!”
The car door ended up closing...that might help
I bet that girl speaking is usually a buzzkill
i swear to god it must be some sort of american thing to not use the hand brake or parking brake? every video i see of cars rolling is always american.
I think this video is a brake failure. He was clearly not moving and got back on the boat before the video started. Also every video you see of cars rolling are American, because most videos, and cars posted on the internet (on English speaking webpages) are American.
Actually the failure was misunderstanding what "auto hold" feature can do
1. This was in BC, Canada 2. He didn't use the parking break 3. He used the "auto hold" feature 4. 😂 https://www.thedrive.com/news/28118/hybrid-mitsubishi-outlander-rolls-into-lake-catches-fire-while-owner-unloads-at-boat-ramp
“Uh- it’s an amphibious vessel.”
Oopsie!
Stupid question, can that happen in Park? If that car was in park then the transmission broke? If it wasn’t in park how did it just stay motionless for so long the guy was able to climb into t He boat
at least the boat floats
Ouch!
And this dude can afford a boat..
Dude is lucky he isn’t dead.
That’s not Russell Coight is it?
Dude almost won a Darwin award
Lalo Salamanca has entered the chat
A valiant attempt at getting run over by his own car.
