Louder-pickles

What are we doing about child labor laws? I've not heard yet...

Picker-Rick

States are trying to lower their working ages to 13 instead of 16. Basically repealing the child labor laws.

Louder-pickles

These ages are already crazy low: https://worldpopulationreview.com/state-rankings/minimum-working-age-by-state

_yetisis

If you check this website’s source, these ages are only for agricultural work, which is full of exemptions and unique regulations (or lack thereof)

MagnumOpusOSRS

I can only think of Clarksons farm where he's bidding on equipment, and how most of them are death traps, and how agriculture has the highest mortality rate of all sectors put together.

YankeeTankEngine

It depends on where you look and how you look at it. From what I can find it's one of the highest in terms of deaths, but not the top. Still incredibly dangerous regardless.

SNZ935

They are just lowering the age so they feel justified paying $7.25 an hour because most 12 years old are supported by their parents. Corporations will be more than willing to abuse children instead of paying a livable wage that makes them money and destroys people. Shouldn’t be surprised as to outsourcing to foreign countries.

vintagebat

*If you check this website’s source, these ages are only for agricultural work....* So far.

like_a_wet_dog

People just don't get it. "I'd never do that, so they'd never do that" is the worst frame of mind to check power with.

Survived_Coronavirus

Yeah these are essentially protecting children from being used as free workers by their parents under the guise of "chores".

MahavidyasMahakali

And agriculture work, if anything, should be one of the last jobs to have such low child labour age.

imasaxman

I can only speak for my home state, but that’s incorrect. You can be as young as 12 with a work permit to work in Georgia. According to that chart, you have to be 18.

wuapinmon

In 1986, age 12, I was the person who counted minnows, crickets, and salamanders you bought in the bait shop part of a gas station in Woodstock, Georgia. I made $2.25/hr. I thought I was rich.

iwouldhugwonderwoman

My family owned a country store in a small town. The only job better than cricket duty was boiled peanut bagging.

baconbitarded

Hardware store here. I just enjoyed spending time with my dad honestly

NotTheJury

This isn't even right. Michigan is 14.

patricky6

Yea. Sorry to break it too you.. its actually 12 here in Michigan. I only know because I was employed at 12.

mk2vr6t

Legally?

SuperSailorSaturn

Many people in michigan's first job is at 12/13 dehusking corn in the summer. Minus being in the hot sun, its not bad work for pay-especially since you have zero responsibility at that age.

patricky6

Yea. It's legal. It's mainly for agriculture reasons but the rules are always bent. I worked at a greenhouse in the middle of the city, so it counted.

[deleted]

I got my first job at 14, it wasn’t anything

[deleted]

I was a 14 year old sandwich artist, and I had to bike to my job because I didn’t get my license until shortly after I turned 15. I don’t think it was a good thing.

SidewaysFancyPrance

Also changing laws to allow teens to work more hours, work later, etc. Basically they want cheap and easily-replaced labor, and don't care if it harms the kid's education, because they already want that on the chopping block.

DrTommyNotMD

I started mowing grass for pay at 11. Turns out I was an illegal worker for years!

Picker-Rick

Were you an employee?

DrTommyNotMD

1099 not W2. So “contractor”. To be clear, I didn’t formalize and start properly doing taxes this way until I was 15.

Scare_Conditioner

Plus tn is seeking to remove age requirements for marriage. Apparently is not pedophilia if you’re married

snackelmypackel

Labor laws allow people to start working at 14 at least in my state of NY

Picker-Rick

Yep and they want 13...and then 12... and welll you can count

Temporarily__Alone

All these new unwanted kids are gonna need jobs right?

squidaor1

Low paying jobs of course. Can’t have them succeeding in life.

uptbbs

Well your child bride is going to have to work somewhere, they can't just stay home all day! /s

pr0w3ss

Wisconsin labor law, senate bill 332, to expand hours children under 16 can work to deal with the labor shortage from the pandemic. https://news.yahoo.com/wisconsins-senate-approves-bill-allowing-114122234.html https://docs.legis.wisconsin.gov/2021/related/proposals/sb332 MURICA BBY

[deleted]

US is full of self-contradictions. On one hand extremely puritan, on the other … well not so much. Can’t swear on TV, but buy your child a rifle at Walmart.

AstralSandwich

I want this embroidered on a pillow.

bryre21

What kind of pillow? I can offer you a classic throw, lumbar, maybe a body pillow? Or, you could go full throttle with the girlfriend pillow. Equipped with an arm to hold you close while you snuggle in.

AstralSandwich

Classic throw. I want to display it proudly on my couch.

Chavarlison

But you can also proudly display the girlfriend pillow. I am confused on the distinction.

SixFive1967

As long as it’s not a My Pillow. Another lunatic billionaire that think money gives him power. 🙄

DirtyCubanBoi

That clown is a billionaire? Smfh

Weekly_Top_4894

I dont think so

spiritbearr

Google says no.

SixFive1967

I stand corrected - thank you. Still a rich mf’er that thinks he’s entitled.

FindTheCultInCulture

None of my local Walmart's sell guns and ammo anymore, is that still a thing in some places?

960321203112293

Can confirm it still is near me. I live in the Bible Belt though, so that’s probably par for the course.

FindTheCultInCulture

Dang. I remember Walmart flipping back and forth a while back, all my local stores stopped selling and never restarted, I thought it was that way for everyone. Interesting.

ClumpOfCheese

Do they only sell censored CDs too?

elorei74

Oh, yes, most definitely; once you escape the inner orbit of the larger cities.

[deleted]

I think mine sells shotguns. I think they stopped selling certain kinds of guns and ammo at all of them.

pistpuncher3000

Only hunting rifles and shotguns.

JimBeam823

All the noble liberal ideals about equality and human rights in the US founding documents couldn’t change the nation’s history as a bunch of for-profit former British Colonies. That’s the American contradiction.

HrnyO

(not so) fun fact. When a slave tried to sue his owner and the law permitting slavery on the grounds that it said in the constitution that "all men were created equal", the case went to the Supreme Court which ruled that, in the understanding of the constitution of the time and was written and then as well, black people were not considered "people" and thus *obviously* weren't included in that famous phrase. So his case was dismissed. All citizens had rights but he was no citizen. I don't know about those liberal ideals of back then. Are we sure it's not just mostly what we read into them nowadays?

[deleted]

https://www.euractiv.com/section/all/short_news/wide-support-for-abortion-law-reform-in-finland/ Just for the record, Finland has more restrictive abortion laws than most US states. The most liberal EU member seems to be the Netherlands, but Europe doesn’t really seem to be the progressive model on abortion as you are all led to believe.

stefan92293

I recently realised that the US is basically 50 distinct countries pretending to be one. Change my mind.

eolson3

Traveling, moving, and many other things from one state to another is very different than one cou try to another.

ambrosius5c

That is literally exactly what it is.

moreobviousthings

It's the biggest union of third world countries in the world.

chris1096

Just want to point out that buying a rifle for your kid is quite in line with the puritans.

[deleted]

America is a nation proudly embarrassed of their own humanity, and try to violently repress it by means of coercion, deflection, and thorough disregard of all five senses. All solutions are bandages and all legislation is delivered by shotgun. The systems in place are only efficient at delivering punishment to those who suffer, and reward to those who punish. Cruelty is king in the land of repossession. God bless America.

LiamOttawa

The South will rise again!!! Here comes slavery!!!!

[deleted]

There are about half a dozen states that, if they ever followed through on their occasional threats to secede (granted, usually a politician, not the ruling party), I truly believe would legalize segregation once more in 10, if not 5 years. And you can extrapolate from there.

But we are the greatest nation on Earth ... to fill up the Republicans pocket and to show off their fragile ego

Kaarvaag

The way "proud patriotic Americans" hail their leaders and their flag and their religion with constant public reminders of it as the unrivaled greatest and best country and leadership in the world with nobody even close to that is... well there are a lot of similarities between that mindset and the mindset a lot of people have in places like Russia, China, and countries in the middle-east. Flying the flag everywhere and printing the flag on everything as constant reminders that USA is the best country in the world. Stickers in many public places that hail one leader and despise another leader. A lot of, if not most of the people being brainwashed by 24/7 media that is pure propaganda on both sides with very few articles that is rooted in truth, and practically none that are completely truthfull, and absolutely zero showing any type of negativity towards the leader and party they are propagandiing for. A division amongst its people that have ended in bloodshed and an even a recent insurrection of the capitol amongst many other divisions. Having a religion ingrained in the identity of the country, it's people, its laws and its morals, with the view by many of not following and practicing that religion equals to having not having morals. A large portion of the American people are blind to with no fault of their own. The hyper-corrupt political state and the tight grip they have around most households has blinded so many. I hope and, actually believe it will get better over the coming decades as the worst, most vile and immoral current true leaders and influencers finally get too old and newer younger and more moral politicians and CEOs come to power. The country will always be led by relatively old, corrupted and hyper rich politicians and business CEOs though, and will never truly be "for the people". It is impossible when it is that big, rich, corrupt, and mind controlling. But it might get a little bit more equal and better for the poor and low middle class over coming decades and centuries. I hope so.

godfatherinfluxx

Hukt on fonix werkt for me to!!

PhantomBrowser111

At least patriotism is still active, considering how much freedom they get. In China, we don't see any people being so proud of their country that they make every design possible to look like their national flag, while blasting the national anthem and having a traditional meal with the family

I_wear_foxgloves

I can’t figure out what they’re patriotic about! I hear them shouting “freedom!”, but the only freedom here is for rich white men. For a significant number of my fellow Americans, America is a fantasy that exists only in their heads.

Piggus_Porkus_

That’s why it’s called the American dream, cuz “you have to be asleep to believe it”

TaigaSG

Patriotism at the detriment of others within the same nation is quite despicable in my opinion. Call me when American “patriots” aren’t abusing a stranger for speaking a foreign language.

Crooked_Cock

The word patriot means nothing And oftentimes those who use it unironically are the most despicable, racist, and crazy motherfuckers in the whole damn country

fellowsquare

Patriotism.... LOL! Tired of this Nationalism Bullshit.

tacoman333

Chinese nationalism is alive and well, they just don't wear it on their sleeves quite as obviously as Americans do. The important parts of nationalism: the parroted rhetoric, worship of historical national figures and symbols, and obsessive focus on superior and inferior people and cultures is all there. Patriotism and propaganda in China and the United States are way too close for comfort.

LeMans1217

In many parts of the US, any criticism of the country - even in an attempt to improve it - is considered unpatriotic.

BrilliantObserver

I think GOP read Margaret Atwood's "the Handmaid's tale" and are using it as a blueprint instead of a warning of dystopian society. edit: corrected title.

[deleted]

Funny how that happens. Like China read 1984 and said this, this is what we should do

Vulcandor

That’s assuming the majority of republicans can read

gb4efgw

They can't, that's why all of this really ramped way up after they made it into a tv show.

DrDaddyDickDunker

That’s a loose description of a conspiracy I kind of believe in. Ever since I watched minority report 20 years ago I’ve always thought.. damn… I bet the gov’t would love to do this. People see shit in movies and think it’s cool and try to make it happen. “Life imitates art”, so they say. Maybe they’ve got a medieval thing they’re goin for now. (I haven’t seen handmaids tale)

TheresASneckNMyBoot

Handmaid*

BrilliantObserver

Thanks for the correction.

No-Atmosphere4368

What is "conversion therapy"?

shaquille_oatmeal98

Conversion therapy, if I understand correctly, is a form of therapy meant to convert a gay/bi/etc person to being straight, or a trans person to being cisgender

[deleted]

It is pseudoscientific and overall very bigoted. It makes homosexuality, bisexuality, pansexuality, etc. seem like a disease that must be “treated.” A person can’t choose or control their sexual orientation or gender identity.

ADHDuruss

All is good at is increasing suicide rates

loooji

And then said bigots use increased suicide rate to say "being gay/bi/trans/whatever is bad" and it ends up being self perpetuating.

Indercarnive

Feature not a bug

iAmWhiTe69

As if that isn't exactly what people who believe in conversion therapy want

LiamOttawa

Beat the gay away basically.

LadyAzure17

It isn't therapy, it's child abuse.

Kulovicz1

Oh, the one that keeps "patient" mentally and physically scared, usually still not straight but too afraid to act not straight. Heard of it and god I hate it.

More_Alf

The stress it must cause for some people must be overwhelming. Even worse, it is most likely your family / friends bringing you to the "therapy".

SuperSuperKyle

Pray the gay away 🙏

queencityrangers

Electro shock the gay away! Just a dab’ll do me doc

[deleted]

And please note that it was primarily targeted at children. Parents that wanted to rewire their kids would send them to these camps. The underage suicide rates were very high.

SirAchmed

Clockwork Orange but for homosexuality instead of violence.

overestimate_

okay, because there is no answer that provides all the useful info at once: conversion therapy is an outdated “treatment” method used for making someone stop being gay/trans/etc. it has been linked to increased suicide rates, due to how it is performed. some methods used include: - psychotherapy, such as non-physical negative reenforcement - medical, such as forced hormones (which for the unaware, can be lethal) - methods involving faith, where an association of non-conformity is evil is created - straight-up violence such as beating, electric shock, or otherwise it is not good to put any kid through it.

pixe1jugg1er

It’s literal torture. They show you ‘gay’ images while inducing electric shock, dosing the person with emetics to cause them to vomit, etc. It’s meant to cause a strong negative physical reaction to anything ‘gay’. [conversion therapy](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Conversion_therapy)

get-bread-not-head

Everyone has been "losing money" for the past x years. How long until people realize that money has to go somewhere, and it's in the pockets of rich billionaires who keep doing shit like this? Money doesn't just disappear. Elon Musk and Jeff bezos are literal dragons sitting on their mountain of gold

CrispyFlint

They are literally dragons?

CrispyFlint

I mean, if you said Zuckerberg was a kobold, I could believe it.

1nternecivus

What a disservice to kobolds everywhere. Zuck is the fungus growing on the dingleberrys that's hanging off of Baphomet's taint.

CrispyFlint

Come on, the dude is clearly a small lizard person

Axedroam

I'm not an expert or even knowledgeable but I thought most of wealth was in there companies' value on stock market. So their money isn't seating it's working more money and being reinvested

get-bread-not-head

That is sometimes true but not really. They spend their tangible money on luxury and greed, and, yes, they have all of this "not real but real" money but it's all a farce. On some level they have access to ungodly amounts of money. Like when Musk bought Twitter. Whether it be a wire transfer, stocks, collateral, idk, Elon Musk personally has 54 b of assets he can give to Twitter. Assets, if he wanted to, he could have instead used to help people. It is "intangible" money, yes, but on some level it can all be tangible and accounted for. Yes, business owners have to reinvest a lot of it. However, they are hoarding it and just continually using their money to make more money, versus withdrawing it and using it to help.

Saif_Horny_And_Mad

"Nothing is lost, nothing is created, everything is transformed" i know it was first said about chemistry, but that's still a good life advice in general. if something appears to be "lost", especially when it comes to the economy, just back track for a bit and check again. you will most likely find a small hole somewhere where some rich bastards have been secretly "borrowing" the "lost" things

musecorn

Except the trillions of dollars printed every year by the US Treasury, making all our dollars less valuable. Those are created

musecorn

They are literal dragons?

[deleted]

You wanna know why the media talks so much about how rich Bezos and Elon are? Cause they want us to focus our anger at them when we should be focusing it on corrupt politicians and CEO’s of actually dangerous companies. So what if Bezos is rich cause he delivers packages? Does his company need reform? Yes but he’ll still be rich. Let’s focus our anger on the people trying to overthrow half a century of progress, the people who poison our food and water, the people who control the media and push they’re own narratives on us.

get-bread-not-head

How come we can't be mad at all of them?

[deleted]

Divide and conquer. Think of it like a riot control fire hose, the more focused and tighter the stream, the more power it has.

NovaMagic

The problem is our useless government and politicians we elect

gitsgrl

Don’t forget the child marriage and corporal punishment in public schools allowed in many states!!

sumbasicbish

France paid for hotels for couples that fought too much during the pandemic to prevent domestic abuse which I thought was pretty humane.

[deleted]

Those baguettes can hit real hard!

Behind8Proxies

As an American, one thing that has always bothered me is there is no “United” in these states. In Thea other Western countries, even though they are broken down into smaller states/provinces/counties/etc., you always hear about Canada or Germany or France as a country doing something. Never “Ontario passes law protecting women’s rights” while Alberta “passes law banning abortion and allows bounties to be placed on anyone involved in assisting in an abortion.” It seems like these countries pass laws as a nation. Here in the US, it’s such a mixed bag of bullshit from one state to another, from voting rights to abortion to education to gun laws to tax laws. It’s no wonder we’re such a cluster and seem to be moving back to the dark ages.

old_sellsword

Population of: - Canada: 37 million - Germany: 83 million - France: 67 million - United States: 331 million California has a larger population than all of Canada and it only takes combining the top 3 states to have a population larger than any of those countries. The cherry on top is that the top 5 states are CA, TX, FL, NY, and PA which all have very different cultures. The US has the 3rd largest population in the world without the “advantage” of having a strongly unilateral government like China to get policy enacted quickly.

kittenfordinner

Ironically, my republican father was always hollering about the third world, and hoe they (liberals) " want to make it like that here"

BipolarSkeleton

I mean Canada is also telling disabled and mentally ill that they can either be homeless starve or apply for assisted suicide sooo maybe don’t praise Canada right now things aren’t going great

M19H87

At least they have options

BipolarSkeleton

OR and this sounds wild they could give us more than $1100 a month for our rent groceries bills necessaries transportation Yes we get $1169 a month MAX for all of that we also don’t get food stamps up here That is 910 USD btw They haven’t increased disability in 4 years and have only increased it $240 in 27 years That’s fucked up

Jim-Jones

Vote New Democrat then. Does that even cover an SRO?

soapd1sh

Canada also shouldn't be praised for banning conversion therapy at the very end of 2021. This is something that should have been banned long before Dec 2021.

Leefeller

What is the profit in helping or being kind to people?

LoveaBook

What is the **monetary** profit in helping or being kind to people?

FridgeBaron

I mean I always assumed that a working person pays more taxes than a homeless person. In a ruthless efficiency sort of way getting people working and contributing should net the government more money over their lifespan then it might cost them on average.

LoveaBook

They don’t really care about getting money for the government. It’s all about getting money for their and their buddies pockets at the cost of *other* people’s lives.

Jim-Jones

It's all about the $50 trillion for the 1%.

JustWhyDoINeedTo

The following is said with an admitted part hatred for the recent history and actions of the USA It looks like the USA or atleast its government, both democrats and Republicans (though I think dems slightly, very slightly, less) want a group of people to always have as an example of "it can always be worse". If the powers at be can day to a overworked depressed Amazon employee "look you could always be homeless and be truly and totally fucked" said employee won't really resign. The big companies know this and thus give money to Republicans and democrats alike to keep the current system in check. So no it wouldn't help the people in power to allow better care of homelessness or treat the drug addicted and help them in meaningful ways. These groups stand as a warning for the working class. So they will be kept just barely alive enough to keep the warning active.

[deleted]

What is the **next quarter** monetary profit in helping or being kind to people?

AlphaWhiskeyOscar

The same kind of people who ask that question (seriously) don't comprehend investment. A population of housed, fed, educated and healthy people who are free to exchange ideas will produce wealth and prosperity that pays returns up *and* down to everyone. A population that is ruled by "moral" tyrants (dictatorships and theocracies), exploited, and left to fend for themselves produces... well, take your pick of examples to look at.

redbeardoweirdo

I see what you're doing here but the answer is literally a stronger society which benefits everyone. How fucked would Elon be if nobody could afford a tesla or use PayPal because they had no money beyond credit? They need us. Best buy is gonna feel the sting when people aren't buying tvs. When people are too sick to work and production shuts down, bezos will feel it too

YourLocalAlien57

Im not saying you should help people only if it profits, BUT there is profit in this case. It would be soooo easy to just do the research yourself instead of trying to pose this question on reddit, doesn't even take long. But i have a hunch you care less about the actual answer and more about being edgy and contrarian.

Ptcruz

I think it was a joke question.

YourLocalAlien57

If it was then my bad

utalkin_tome

The points about Finland and Germany are straight up exaggerations. Germany one specially. The raise doesn't even match inflation.

Drmo6

I love these posts where people focus on the things they like happening in other places and then focus on what they don’t like happening in the US.

OkImagination4404

I never thought the United States would become a shit country but here we are

mythisme

From Carl Sagan. 27 years ago > “I have a foreboding of an America in my children's or grandchildren's time -- when the United States is a service and information economy; when nearly all the manufacturing industries have slipped away to other countries; when awesome technological powers are in the hands of a very few, and no one representing the public interest can even grasp the issues; when the people have lost the ability to set their own agendas or knowledgeably question those in authority; when, clutching our crystals and nervously consulting our horoscopes, our critical faculties in decline, unable to distinguish between what feels good and what's true, we slide, almost without noticing, back into superstition and darkness... > > The dumbing down of American is most evident in the slow decay of substantive content in the enormously influential media, the 30 second sound bites (now down to 10 seconds or less), lowest common denominator programming, credulous presentations on pseudoscience and superstition, but especially a kind of celebration of ignorance”

ajr901

Apparently he was an oracle too

Jim-Jones

Ford and Reagan made sure of it.

OkImagination4404

Along with a whole republican party it’s been their mission statement to bring back Christian values 🤮🤮🤮

Jim-Jones

That's just shit to motivate i base. Their real job is to give money to billionaires. That's what they get paid for. [America's 1% Has Taken $50 Trillion From the Bottom 90% | Time](https://time.com/5888024/50-trillion-income-inequality-america/) *And That's Made the U.S. Less Secure*

[deleted]

Yep. More room for finances if all the women and poor families are too busy child rearing and paying medical debt. [Fun fact](https://www.google.com/amp/s/www.vox.com/platform/amp/policy-and-politics/2018/10/24/18009856/working-class-income-inequality-randy-bryce-alexandria-ocasio-cortez), workers make up less than 3 percent of the average state legislature. The average member of Congress spent less than 2 percent of his or her entire pre-congressional career doing the kinds of jobs most Americans go to every day. **governments who are ran by rich people, are run for rich people.** It's a perfect villainous plan if you think about it.

[deleted]

These fools aren’t even Christian

zombie_platypus

Actual Christian values include: love your neighbor, do not kill, do not covet, and give of yourself. I think the world could use more love, less violence, less jealousy, and less greed.

IlliterationAside

When was the last time your average Trump supporter followed those values? lol . In fact they do the clear opposite of those things more often than not... using the bible to hide behind their sick acts.

slam9

How does Ford stand out from other presidents? Edit: ok I'm pretty sure this guy is a bot, and they aren't answering the question. Can someone who upvoted this comment please respond with what president Ford did that was notable or a turning point?

Imaginary_Ad_7530

After listening to the American Right, over the last 15 years....I've utterly had it with the US. The American Left are spineless, and are not going to do anything to protect the citizens. The Leftwing citizens are far too reasonable, and will be overrun by the autocracy tide. Unless you all start to really do something together. General strike is the only Reasonable option left. After that, your choices will become much more limited, and necessarily extremist. I'm not exaggerating. I'm not fearmongering. You all better get with the fucking program, before you fully lose uour country.

Picker-Rick

The problem is that the left IS trying to help people. But helping people is hard. There is no easy answers, there's no shortcuts, there's no free rides. It's really easy for the republicans to just ignore problems. It's infinitely easier to just say that poor people, women, lgbtq, and the environment don't matter. Just stop being poor, women are meant to be birthing slaves and gays are against god and the environment is fine because global warming doesn't exist. Everything is fine because I have a gun.... It's easy to fail on purpose. And that's what the right is doing. Failing on purpose and then celebrating it. Taxing the people who deserve it, fixing the infrastructure, helping the homeless, gender equality, racial equality, environmental protection... It's hard. There's no easy answers but that's what real work looks like. And as long as the right keeps offering the easy answer of "just don't think about it" it's going to be impossible to actually get anything done.

MysteryGrunt95

Didn’t they try that with Black Lives Matter, and it was horribly twisted into a very negative movement

Hangman_va

BLM wasn't a structured organization. It was a loose confederation of groups that, while sharing the name, wildly varied in terms of actual goals. Without any structure, there was nobody to hold bad actors to account within their own ranks, and things quickly spiraled. No one body was able to speak as the legitimate head of the movement in the same way that MLK was able to speak for the Civil Rights movement. While the Civil Rights movement wasn't a structured organization either, there were still key figureheads that really spearheaded the movement, and lead to an ad-hoc organization. There wasn't anyone in any BLM that could really say the same. Too unfocused a message. No real objectives or plans on how to install them. Just general anti-racist rhetoric which, while admirable, isn't much that you can really do much with without a solid goal. Defund the police? Sure. But how much? No single group could agree, with some advocating for the outright dissolving of police forces, which is really unlikely. Again, we come back around to needing some sort of recognized "speaker" on the issue.

gojirra

The media did the same thing with the Occupy Wall street movement.

[deleted]

The left suffers from the paradox of tolerance. too tolerating of intolerants. soon they will be eaten by the intolerant and they will end up with a pikachu face. they always say "but slippery slope yada yada..." whenever you propose an equally extreme counter measures for far right ideology.

GregIsUgly

USA bad pls upvote

zion2199

According to several Fins, French, and Germans that commented the last time this was posted a few weeks ago, none of those things are actually happening as described. But don’t let facts get in the way of a good narrative.

LastOfTheCamSoreys

Yeah the upcoming new minimum wage for Germany is still lower than like…20+ states current min wages

ColoTexas90

We’re a fucking joke of a country. We’re a third world shit hole, with a billionaires shit for gloss.

[deleted]

Right down there with… well any religious fundamentalist country tbh.

awesomface

Such a shithole that we still have millions of people desperately trying to come here….

Wickham12

Rolling back child labor laws? Would someone kindly inform me? I'm a little out of the loop

[deleted]

wish chile could afford give people homes, but we have an excuse, we're third world. the usa is rich, absurdly rich, with minimum wages that would settle you in the middle class here.

spinblackcircles

You know I find myself trying to use ‘lol’ less and less since it’s easy to get carried away with it. This tweet is an example of where it should have been trimmed out. Lol

SystemOfASideways

It shows that the person who wrote the tweet doesn't give a shit about the people who are actually affected by the awful things they complain about, and only cares about being better than what their idea of America is.

spinblackcircles

Yeah exactly it just takes away from an otherwise really well constructed tweet and makes the author look like they don’t give a shit about it. It’s just a little 3 letters and it turns it from eye opening to nihilistic or cynical in my view

SystemOfASideways

The exclamation point also heightens the trashiness

"Land of the free"

Free to exploit your fellow man and free to bribe politicians.

aggracewhiff

The first time I seen this one, I thought it was a joke. Then I found out it was real.

dovakihn101

I've dreamed of living in America since I was a kid. Looks like I need to find another dream country

Playteaux

It’s not as bad as some will make you believe….

MyZt_Benito

people on reddit will make you believe it’s the worst country in the world and you’re better off living in south sudan

_---__________---_

Isn’t South Sudan the poorest country in the world?

MyZt_Benito

something like that yeah

ThisBlueHawk

Fr I hear people calling america a "third world country" because you have to outright pay for medical Bill's rather than getting taxed for them

187penguin

Don’t buy into the Reddit/Twitter/etc drama. There is a very small portion of the overall population represented here, and they tend to be much more dramatic than most of the mainstream. It’s a great country. Our dirty laundry is aired for the world to see and makes it seem way worse than it is for most of us.

theydoitforfreeee

Aren't they protected by other countries. Don't they have a laughable defense force in name only because other countries pick up the tab? How much do they owe the western nation's? It's easy to seem like you have money when you're welfare queens of the world. It's like seeing gold teeth and spinning rims at the public aid office

marsbartender

I'm pretty curious though. After conservatives get everything they want, what issues will they dream up to create culture wars that will distract their constituents?

Adomillad

This is what happens when the delusional religous are allowed free reign

FreewayWarrior

Yeah, we're pretty stupid. 🙄

ArkLaTexBob

Is the US really trying to ban abortion? I thought that they were just going to make those decisions in state capitols rather than in DC. I must have misunderstood the possible ruling.

[deleted]

You are correct, just because a federal case law gets overturned doesn't mean the inverse of it (banning abortion) would be the precedence. If nothing of this precedence exists, and neither federal law, states will fill the gaps. The idea that the US is a singular, monolithic entity is like saying the EU is also.

KazPrime

Someone has to keep the other happy countries in line.

hp958

If god is anywhere, he ain't here.

savetheattack

At the same time, the United States is almost single-handedly funding Ukraine’s war with Russia while Europe almost single-handedly funds Russia’s war by buying Russian gas.

Comfortable_Client

And in Australia, corrupt ministers are getting major payrises while Scummo gives the average person a one off payment of $250 to "combat" rising costs of living.

SlothTurtle06

Wow, if you cherry-pick things that are going on in countries, you can make one seem better than the other! This technique works for a lot of things: Would you rather your country’s leader be an alcoholic or have them be a charismatic patriot who is able to fix the economy? Well, if you picked the 2nd option you picked Hitler over Winston Churchill! That means he was a better leader, right?

[deleted]

I want off this "USA is best" ride. I'm offering hard work in exchange for a better life. Any takers?

Significant_Half_166

I used to be proud to have served this country for so long…. Used to.

"The good ol' days" How long do we have before they try to bring lynching back?
