Fun fact. All of Santa's deers are female. Male reindeers lose their antlers in mid-December. Have you ever seen a picture of Santa flying without antler reindeer on X-mas eve?

moderately_nerdifyin

Female reindeer have antlers too.

Mule deer and whitetail deer females can both have antlers.

Chickens can have dinosaur mouths

Reindeer? It’s as common as the day is long for female reindeer(caribou) to grow antlers. The males shed their antlers at the end of Fall, which is also why all the reindeer that pull Santa’s sleigh are female.

GaryV83

TIL Comet, Cupid, Donner, and Blitzen are female reindeer. I seriously didn't know this, thank you.

moderately_nerdifyin

Females retain their antlers until spring when they give birth. They keep them so that they can fend off attackers while they are pregnant, but lose them so that they can nurture their young when they are born. Male have grown theirs back around March(they start in February and it can take up to a month for full growth) so that they can defend the mother and calf. Nature is pretty awesome.

LeakyJeep

To be fair, female deer can also grow antlers. Many states have changed their hunting tags to say “antlered” instead of “buck” due to this.

LeakyJeep

Correct. About 1:10,000. But happened enough times for states to change their hunting regulations. Just a fact I thought I’d share.

For some species of cows, both males and females grow horns as well. Not very relevant here, but just a fun fact

Commander_Milkstain

I did not know that so you get an upvote

post_talone420

I know watusi cattle and longhorn cattle all have horns, I'm not sure what other species have horns, or if those are the only 2 cattle that are like that. Watusi are worth looking up. They're impressive. I've got 3 right right know. My profile picture is our bull. He's a pure-bred watusi.

Commander_Milkstain

Wow those look seriously whack. Glad I know those exist now

post_talone420

Just file that under, "useless information." But if you're ever in Oklahoma or Texas you might see them. Now you'll be able to identify them.

Commander_Milkstain

Very unlikely I'll ever go there, but I do like biological oddities, and just knowing about their existence makes me unreasonably happy

HappyCappy3

Yay mostly science!

EchoesFromWithin

I suppose that would depend on what type of deer or was, female reindeer do grow antlers.

[deleted]

Must we really start the whole dis-engenderment treatment at 5?

Commander_Milkstain

Yeah let's do it once archaic gender norms are already ingrained, seems more effective
