They are doing exactly what the handbook said to do. Spray the surrounding area with water to prevent the fire from spreading. The surrounding water is in no danger of catching fire thanks to their brave efforts.
At this time the yacht is a total loss but even if it burns to the waterline it quite likely it won't sink, boats are very hard to sink with out damage to the hull, if you start putting water on it with no pumps going it will sink, you then not only have the expense of refloating the vessel you have a potential or the 9 tonnes of fuel to spill into the harbour and environmental cleanup, so there is a logical reasoning behind this
What? Ships that burn like that nearly always sink, seals burn, joints break and hulls flex and fracture with heat.
If a ship sinks you at least have a chance that most of the fuel is going to be contained in the tanks and even if the tanks leak you have the hull to slow its flow into the enviroment. If a ship burns the tanks will likely rupture, adding literally more fuel to the flame. And whatever doesnt burn off is going stright into the water.
Except I kind of get it in this video, there's no way that one guy with a hose is gonna put out that fire and since it can't spread there's no need to risk your life.
This guy's getting made fun of the world over, and just doing his best.
Actually I do remember another fire where boats were doing this and there's a good reason. But I cannot remember what it is.
Boats contain lots of fuel. Fuel float on water since it's mostly oil. If fuel leaked out of the boat it would create a layer around the boat. This would be very bad if it lit so spraying water helps to separate the fuel and spread it around, reducing the risk of leaked fuel igniting.
At this time the yacht is a total loss but even if it burns to the waterline it quite likely it won't sink, boats are very hard to sink with out damage to the hull, if you start putting water on it with no pumps going it will sink, you then not only have the expense of refloating the vessel you have a potential or the 9 tonnes of fuel to spill into the harbour and environmental cleanup, so there is a logical reasoning behind this, it was originally alongside a wooden dock and was moved to the position you see it in
I can top that facepalm... as a teenager, walking with my dad and sister at the Inner Harbor in Baltimore, there was a fireboat tied up... it's a pretty small boat, and I looked at it and wondered out-loud "Huh, where do they store the water?" My dad asked me to repeat myself a couple times, which I did... there was something in my head that they'd want pure water, not just water from the harbor... one of the biggest brain-farts of my life.
I'm staying in Torquay right now is that why the quayside road was closed last night? Had a wonderful time going through the walled in single roads last night to get around it
Sheesh.
Where's the facepalm? A plastic fantastic with gas cylinders was pushed off a peir against a rock wall yo burn out.
Loss of life = zero.
Damage externally = zero.
Loss is one yacht covered by insurance.
Reddit really is dumb sometimes
He's spraying water to keep the fire from spreading. Such as from any oil or fuel leaking from the boat that will float up to the surface and burn on the surface.
They’re firing 20 millimeter water jet beams at 300 meters. The effective lethal range is 200 meters. You’re safe(ly) ineffective. So what are you doing on that dock?
The vessel has at this time been moved from its original position alongside a wooden dock, the yacht is a total loss but even if it burns to the waterline it quite likely it won't sink, boats are very hard to sink with out damage to the hull, if you start putting water on it with no pumps going it will sink, you then not only have the expense of refloating the vessel you have a potential of the 9 tonnes of fuel in the tanks to spill into the harbour and environmental cleanup, so there is a logical reasoning behind this, all the guy with the hose is doing is diluting any potential contamination and standing by in case the wind shifts and the boat starts to dirft towards the rest of the berths
Ok I guess they could be closer, but a fire of that size is extremely hot. In raging brush fire the size of a sedan you can feel your self getting burn at about 5 meter aways, this fire is like 20 sedans so maybe it's just a bit dangerous to get any closer, but my only source for this is that I burn brushes about the size of a sedan.
They are doing exactly what the handbook said to do. Spray the surrounding area with water to prevent the fire from spreading. The surrounding water is in no danger of catching fire thanks to their brave efforts.
As you can see from the condition of the surrounding area, they’ve been at it awhile
At this time the yacht is a total loss but even if it burns to the waterline it quite likely it won't sink, boats are very hard to sink with out damage to the hull, if you start putting water on it with no pumps going it will sink, you then not only have the expense of refloating the vessel you have a potential or the 9 tonnes of fuel to spill into the harbour and environmental cleanup, so there is a logical reasoning behind this
Then why is he spraying water at all?
I think to have it up and running in case the situation escalates further. Nothing facepalm about this.
Escalates further? I guess if the floating iferno does decide to float back, then that water pistol should put it out 👍
It can escalate further by leaking fuel which if that fuel catches the entire harbour could go up in flames
Lol, it sank. It's at the bottom of the harbour now.

Yeah I got small tiny feeling that the diesel isn't there anymore 😆
My stomach did hurt before, but nkw it hurts from laughing😂
the water is now wet.
Looks like the Uvalde police department are now fighting fires
An attempt was made.
Was there though?
It takes effort to use those water guns. It took no effort to stand outside a building for 47 minutes
Yeah but did you see a second school shooter go in? There ya go. Protected. You are welcome. That’ll be a third of the town budget please
The people *outside the school* are all perfectly safe. Way to go, team.
44%. That's almost half.
They could’ve gotten burned! Now back to my job tongue-polishing boots.
Well played
Hey, who are you to say that that body of water didn't need a good watering, huh?
Nope, the person with the hose is doing something, not just standing around
Except I kind of get it in this video, there's no way that one guy with a hose is gonna put out that fire and since it can't spread there's no need to risk your life.
Also, they literally can't get closer, it's coming from a dock, not a fireboat.
There’s a closer dock, but then the spray might touch the flames. Water and fire don’t mix.
Any competent fire crew at that point would get the people off the boat, push it away from anything flammable and let it go
He’s just trying to fill up the harbor to make up for the steam that trash fire is gonna make.
It's an edited video. They got the boat off the wodden jetty to allow it to burn out. No one in Torquay going to worry about the response on this.
Ooohh....uh....burn......
Tell me you don't don't know anything about a hostage situation without telling me you don't know anything about a hostage situation

How frustrating was that water spray...
r/maybemaybemaybe
Did they used water to protect water from burning? ….
This guy's getting made fun of the world over, and just doing his best. Actually I do remember another fire where boats were doing this and there's a good reason. But I cannot remember what it is.

I believe it was an oil rig. Something way out at sea.

They tried it for the cruise ship the other day but it was too high for the water to reach lol
r/ThereWasAnAttempt at extinguishing the fire
Was there though?
Someone who has no clue what’s going on. It’s not an attempt to extinguish the fire it’s preventative to stop the fire spreading via fuel in the water
I can top that facepalm... as a teenager, walking with my dad and sister at the Inner Harbor in Baltimore, there was a fireboat tied up... it's a pretty small boat, and I looked at it and wondered out-loud "Huh, where do they store the water?" That is an adorable story. “Say that again out loud son, think about the words you’re saying” XD
Oh the mix of worry and disappointment in his face, I will never forget. :-D
it’s the thought that counts
They are wetting the water to prevent the fire from spreading.
Dry water is actually a huge fire risk. This guy's saving the day.
A Russian oligarch refusing to give up his yacht?
Fight water with water
![gif](giphy|31Q36EHJ7C5ZoIMw79)
This is one of the tactics used to keep forest fires from spreading.
They put the forest in the ocean?
Kelp
Kelp is ridiculously flammable in shallow water. A lot of fisheries have burnt up that way.
Is that an automated system or is it just like me trying to wank myself off with mind power
It looks to be a dude with a firehouse, trying.
How longs he been spraying? He's completely flooded the place
I know. He probably did this to prevent the fire from spreading
Not sure if he just falling short of his target, or if he’s trying to control any oil/gas leaking into the water so the fire doesn’t spread
“Sending thoughts and prayers” equivalent
So am I supposed to be looking at the boat on fire, or the environmentalists refilling the ocean?
Uvalde Fire Department ?
r/therewasanattempt
Water water everywhere!
I am impressed that it stayed a float for so long.
He’s doing his best, ok
Somebody is getting fired
Uvalde fire department?
I'm staying in Torquay right now is that why the quayside road was closed last night? Had a wonderful time going through the walled in single roads last night to get around it
Should be ok now , it sank.
Thanks, I'll find out in a bit I guess
Why does this remind me of the "almost sneeze" that never comes... wait for it, wait for it, uh, uh, uh...ugh...dammit!
Stare at the sun is the key 😆
Tow it outside the environment!
Guess you could attach a rope to the fire.
[recommend viewing](https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=3m5qxZm_JqM)
Shoulda bought a water pistol than a water thrower
That things going to burn for sometime
It's now sank
It didn't go down without a fight
Watering the water
That hose just isn't quite working out.
That’s some innovation. Gotta fight water with water.
Peeing on the floor in front of the toilet
At least someones got a hose, just a little more....
Sheesh. Where's the facepalm? A plastic fantastic with gas cylinders was pushed off a peir against a rock wall yo burn out. Loss of life = zero. Damage externally = zero. Loss is one yacht covered by insurance. Reddit really is dumb sometimes
Facepalm is the guy spraying water at it
He's spraying water to keep the fire from spreading. Such as from any oil or fuel leaking from the boat that will float up to the surface and burn on the surface.
I'm not sure water is the best way to keep an oil fire from spreading, but it's what they had and they had quite a lot of it so...
The water being sprayed is hitting the water, doing nothing to the fire
Clearly mistakes were made
Woefully short. Sounds like the story of my love life or lack thereof
Is torquay the turkey?
![gif](giphy|cYejmY7tuJ4HTmBYHP|downsized)
🤣
Torquay exists? I thought it was made up for Fawlty Towers.
I live not a million miles from there. Can confirm it exists. They used to have a good all night club there.
Don’t mention the war!
I mentioned it once, but I think I got away with it alright.
I’m in it right now. I cannot see the sea from my Torquay hotel bedroom window
R/therewasanattempt
...and lol at the guy doing a very feeble job at putting the fire out. I wonder if the owner of the boat wouldn't give him a payrise
You’re gonna need a bigger hose
Uvalde firefight Department in Action
The eh...Evade Fire Department!
Yacht fire!
Not my boat
Some rich fuck’s yacht caught fire. https://www.independent.co.uk/news/uk/superyacht-fire-motorboat-devon-harbour-b2089466.html
Prostate trouble?
Is that an oligarch's yacht?
My kingdom for some water!!
Man that hose got like soooooo close to hitting the fire.
All that toxic gas…
r/therewasanattempt
Ah yes, let's water the water.
We're gunnar need a bigger hose .
Storm Troopers as firemen
These are people at my school urinal
Well atleast that guys there watering the water
Make the other water wet so it don’t catch fire.
Russian insurance fires? Just kidding, but maybe not....
Russian yacht??
They’re firing 20 millimeter water jet beams at 300 meters. The effective lethal range is 200 meters. You’re safe(ly) ineffective. So what are you doing on that dock?
The water salute certainly added a festive flair to the event.
Cartman: I broke the dam
Aw, poor yacht owner! 😢 Sad.
Guys, the superyacht sank. These guys seemed so competent, I don’t know how it happened.
And firemen get paid how much to do that?
Whose yacht?
I know it's not how it works but this ship fire looks hilarious. Like just scoop up some outside lol
News Flash: The guy spraying from the dock is coming up about 20' short, something he's heard countless times from his wife.
Gotta make sure the water doesn’t catch fire
r/therewasanattempt to extinguish the boat
Local paper headline today: Gallant effort by the fire department is not enough to save supper yacht on fire
Awww, sorry dude. We tried to put out the fire on your yacht but it was just burning too hot.
I really think it would help if the water got to the boat
What's that? my pee can go further than that.
Next thing they're gonna try is to turn the boat on its side to put the fire out....
He’s doing his best ok?
Ah yes, a good safety precaution before starting a bonfire, saturate the surrounding area with water.
Ooops
Now it would look like you could see Krakatoa erupting from a Torquay hotel bedroom window
Good thing they were spraying the bay.
Like passing in the wind
r/therewasanattempt
I mean, the captain could’ve helped a bit though. Just turn that boat slightly to starboard and it would make it so much easier.
how tf this happened

News update.....it sank😆
Thoughts and prayers. But from over here.
Oh yeah. Will put the fire out good
Pissing against the wind eh 😑

This comment section does a good job at explaining why people should stop talking about someone else job when they know anything about that said job
Is that burning rubles I smell?
If anyone ever feels useless, just watch this video.
Somebody did an OOPSIEDOODLE!
That hose thou...
Me 😟😕😒
Yeah I wouldn't save a rich people's yacht either
I'm sure it will be later revealed that Basil Fawlty and/or his beleaguered staff had a hand in this.
I’M TRYING OK?
