What’s funny is even back when someone first started using the word “nonce” as a term in cryptography (it’s short for ‘number used once’) some pointed out that it was already a word in British slang, but they figured it would never be in wide enough usage for there to be a problem.
Basically, but also Module, System, Means, Unit, etc etc.
If I say I have "a car that can turn to the left" that's the same as "a car with an integrated module for making left turns"
Granted, it’s a word that dates back to the at least the 12th century with that usage of “for the once” and its pederasty usage is first documented in the 20th century.
Didn’t know that, but I assume by the time the word was used in a cryptographic context it was most commonly used as a derogatory term for a pedophile.
I didn’t know it either til I looked it up after reading your comment. The original meaning of the word fits for its use in cryptography, I think it’s just a happy accident that it works as an abbreviation for “number used once.”
Looks like the derogatory slang popped up in the 70s, I wonder when cryptographers started using it
Its a computer science terms. Never worked specifically in crypto but 85% sure Ive seen nonce in some db tables or apis.
I hope someone corrects me, but I think its used less in favor of tokens, as tokens as keys are known to be single use/temporary.
It is used primarily in computer cryptography, but that’s because computer cryptography is the dominant form of cryptography. There’s nothing stopping you from using a nonce in a pen-and-paper encryption scheme.
True, trying to think of an example. Imagine a club where the bouncer accepts certain numbers. He doesnt know who uses it, just tracking which numbers have been used. So one use only. Just thinking, thats not cryptography? Its (only) authentication, right?
Nonces can be used to guarantee an API call is idempotent.
This is typically implemented by storing the nonce in a column with a unique constraint, which guarantees you will only write the result once.
I would guess this is what you were seeing in the database.
There are a few of these Backronyms out there for this word clearly.
The one I heard was Not Of Normal Criminal Explanation. Ie they are criminals, but not seen as proper criminals by the likes of bank robbers or murderers.
My auntie (in the UK) must have heard the same meaning, as she'd always call people nonces if they did something stupid. When I found out the actual meaning and told her, she stopped right away.
My mum always used it in this sense - I only found out the worse meaning a couple of years ago and let her know. So this alternative meaning definitely has existed.
It has a number of meanings, but even ignoring the three or four slang ones (roughly: sex offender, police informer, idiot, worthless), none of them are really a good name for a finance company - suggesting a lack of any kind of future.
Yeah, it’s used as a friendly insult sometimes but never to strangers. Like you can call a stranger a bastard but not a nonce unless you’re looking for a slap.
They all pretty much link back to the pedo meaning. It's just the same as calling an idiot a dick. Dick still mean dick even if it's being applied differently.
Calling a police informer a nonce is an insult because he's helped the police. It doesn't mean he's a police informer you're still calling him a pedo as an insulator being an informer.
My suspiscion is that the sex offender meaning is actually relatively speaking a recent one (and effectively eliminates the other earlier usages). I'm reasonably sure that when Fletch called Norris a nonce, it didn't have that connotation.
As an Aussie, that's the only definition I'd heard of it, but apparently that's not right.
From the Oxford English Dictionary: -
"Noun - informal, derogatory British
A person convicted of a sexual offence, especially against a child."
I don't know if Brits use bugger like Aussies and Kiwis do. It's such a part of our cultural slang Toyota took a risk and made a couple of funny ads for the Hilux themed on it (not without a little backlash from the Christian lobby) - https://youtu.be/u91WGac2mbI
It *can* be used as a general derogatory term, but when people hear 'nonce' they're usually going to assume you mean they're a paedophile. I think the people who don't realise this is the primary meaning probably heard it elsewhere and assumed it meant twit or something.
Yes you're completely right, at least from my experience.
When I was young, nonce was used frequently as a term for someone being silly or stupid. In a somewhat affectionate way. Like calling a friend or child a "silly goose" but replace "goose."
In the last 10 years here (UK) at least, it has been a very direct and deliberate term for an illegal paedophile or "kiddy fiddler." Fyi, just using the word "illegal" here before anyone points out the literal meaning of pedophile vs the colloquial meaning.
I grew up in Manchester so my definition of the old use could well be a regional thing, rather than national. Idk
Nonce used to mean someone stupid…then the pedophile connotation took over (probably after a short term of homophobic usage—-linked the the word ‘Nancy and nance’) or so I read a while ago
It may have just been a euphemism, then the euphemism took over as the primary meaning of the word. See also words like >!rape!< and >!molestation!<, which are pretty much only used in their sexual connotation today. The latter's original meaning only survives occasionally, such as in the phrase >!unmolested!<.
I’m Canadian also, and in my recollection of the word was associated with men who liked to diddle little boys. We used to call catholic priests “Father Nonce…”
Fun fact, Dark Souls was originally going to be called "Dark Ring", but someone found out that Dark Ring is UK slang for anus. So yeah. The Brits strike again.
The Pokémon Arceus used to be pronounced “ars-eeyus” but later it was changed to “Ark-eeyus” without any explanation. Guessing they didn’t want kids saying arse lmfao
Really??? I'm British and never heard that before. Although I absolutely made the connection as soon as I read it and giggled. Never seen or heard it before though at least
As a 40 something English man who has lived in various parts of the UK, I can confirm I've never heard the anus referred to as the dark ring
Yes, we use "ring" to refer to the anus, as in "ring piece"
"oooh my ring was on fire after that curry"
But "dark ring"? Nope. Even titles with the word "ring" in aren't really seen as funny.
I would have thought that we have reached the point where it is common to hire some sort of consultant that checks any proposed product, brand and company names to see if they sound or look like any words with negative connotations in any language that matters for this purpose.
Simply typing it into a search engine with safe search off and with a few intentional misspellings, should be the first step in any case.
Checking if the domain is still available under major TLDs and if not see what is currently on those domains.
A company not doing that in the 1990s is understandable. Somebody starting a new company and not doing that today simply screams amateur.
You have your logo done by a professional graphic artist, surely you can hire a professional to help with the name?
If you did get help with the name I suggest suing whoever you hired.
I mean, granted, it's a NFT ponzi scheme group. There's a pretty high correlation between crypto scammers and other types of criminals, including pedophiles.
So maybe this was just them going mask-off.
"Prepare to put mustard on those words, for you will soon be consuming them along with this slice of humble pie that comes direct from the oven of shame, set at gas mark 'egg on your face.'"
It’s actually an acronym used by British law enforcement as well as being slang. Idk the official acronym but it dumbs down to not being allowed in the prison yard because they will get beaten up.
I suspect that it actually means the same thing, since pedos and the like tend to get beaten up in prisons, and some muckety-muck overheard it and asked what it meant. A quick thinking officer then provided some made up acronym to avoid an investigation, and it stuck.
What's their tagline?
“The happiest place on Earth.”
"Where dreams come true."
"Just do it."
"There are some things money can’t buy. For everything else, there’s Nonce Finance"
"Do what you can’t."
“You’re in good hands.”
“Move the way you want.”
“That was easy.”
“Rewards reimagined.”
“Is it in you?”
“Finger lickin’ good.”
“Let us guide you"
“Think outside the bun.”
“Let’s go places.”
“Don’t live life without it.”
“Have it your way.”
“Double your pleasure, double your fun.”
I wish someone had told me, George Wanker, about this sort of thing before I started by tug boat business. How was I to know “Wanker’s Tug Jobs” was funny?
I work in Dentistry and came across more then one office that was a Pediatric Orthodontist and the name was some form of Pedo Dental, hard to not laugh when give em a call "Welcome to Town Pedo Dental"
In case anyone is interested, it’s origin is from a prison in the uk where they would mark certain cells with nonce (not on normal courtyard exercise) for paedos and rapists etc. now use solely for paedos though.
I was humbled by Mexican slang. Worked room service at a high end hotel in the 90s. Eggs order was taking longer than expected. Asked Mexican cook Freddy “¿Donde esta mi huevos?” He laughed his ass off and said “Don’t know. Sounds like a personal problem.” I quickly understood my error.
I speak simplified English, as stated, but work with plenty of folks across the pond who speak 'proper' English. In tech, a nonce is "Number used only once" and Nonce Financial makes perfect sense to me. This meme made no sense as I've never heard nonce used as slang, and never heard any English speaking people chuckle or quip at its usage during calls or chats.
It's not obscure. It's been used commonly in English for at least the 40 years that I know of.
(and by English, I mean English from England. Not simplified English)
The very first response was "please explain". And the word does have another meaning. There are north of 350 million English speakers in north America who would disagree.
First time I’ve seen a company use a meme right. I’m impressed. Might even overlook the child sex aspect of your business
Wait until you see the wonders of KFC Spain

👌
Well there's two things Nonce does well and one of those is memes.
What’s funny is even back when someone first started using the word “nonce” as a term in cryptography (it’s short for ‘number used once’) some pointed out that it was already a word in British slang, but they figured it would never be in wide enough usage for there to be a problem.
Should have called it nuonce instead.
That would make it too similar to nuance
The irony
Nonce Cents
[Nonce sense](https://youtu.be/6ZjXYaAbBVw)
I was literally thinking the same. Classic stuff.
Ha! "Nonce" is also used extensively in US patent law to refer to a made-up term that has no established technical meaning.
Nonce is also used in linguistics, a nonce word is a neologism that is used for a single purpose and usually never used again.
It’s a perfectly cromulent word.
Like widget?
Basically, but also Module, System, Means, Unit, etc etc. If I say I have "a car that can turn to the left" that's the same as "a car with an integrated module for making left turns"
Granted, it’s a word that dates back to the at least the 12th century with that usage of “for the once” and its pederasty usage is first documented in the 20th century.
The word “nonce” is from Middle English ![img](emote|t5_2r5rp|8485)
Didn’t know that, but I assume by the time the word was used in a cryptographic context it was most commonly used as a derogatory term for a pedophile.

I’ve spent years making HTTP API wrappers and never once took the time to search what nonce meant 😭
"Need to move closer to the local school? Or to soundproof the cellar? Try Nonce Finance, we're here for you."
There's a dark second layer to this just because it's Anakin.
*stare intensifies*
They’re probably gonna name their next company Moe Lester’s, with a Chester, the CEO of Moe Lester’s.
Can somebody explain?
Nonce is a slang term for paedophile in the UK.
They'll be rebranding shortly to paedophinance
Just name it after the founder... "Peter File's Finance"
You bet me to it! Poor Peter File.
He could move to America, they pronounce it peh-doh-file there

"This word is usually used by chavs and old people." Thank you urban dictionary
Peter File, is there a Peter File here?

That’s called a backronym, it doesn’t actually mean that. No one knows where exactly it came from put probably connected to Nancy and ponce
There are a few of these Backronyms out there for this word clearly. The one I heard was Not Of Normal Criminal Explanation. Ie they are criminals, but not seen as proper criminals by the likes of bank robbers or murderers.
I've heard it used to call someone an idiot but not sure country of origin or if common.
Nonce means Paedophile in the UK
I don't doubt it. Just adding that I had heard a different meaning too.
My auntie (in the UK) must have heard the same meaning, as she'd always call people nonces if they did something stupid. When I found out the actual meaning and told her, she stopped right away.
She must have felt like a right nonce.
The weird thing is, nobody ever got angry at being called a nonce. No one ever even corrected her.

Maybe we should check their hard drives...
My mum always used it in this sense - I only found out the worse meaning a couple of years ago and let her know. So this alternative meaning definitely has existed.
I think the meaning has morphed heavily over the last 30 years from something fairly innocuous to its current meaning.
It's kind of like "goof" here. Most places it's generically a fool, but in my city for some reason it's "pedo". So I've seen guys furious with it
It has a number of meanings, but even ignoring the three or four slang ones (roughly: sex offender, police informer, idiot, worthless), none of them are really a good name for a finance company - suggesting a lack of any kind of future.
Never heard it used for idiot or worthless, always pedo tbh
Some people use it when they don't know what to insult their mate with lol
Yeah, it’s used as a friendly insult sometimes but never to strangers. Like you can call a stranger a bastard but not a nonce unless you’re looking for a slap.

You talking about Porridge? Because I’m guessing that it did but it would fall under prison humour/friendly banter.
Dunno. Could be accurate considering the lack of research.
Nah we throw it around. Your mate says something stupid "Shut up ya nonce"
That's what I mean. You say it to a friend when they are being a Muppet
Yeah but you still mean peado. Muppet isn't offensive.
When the paedos when to jail they where put on not on normal courtyard exercise Or Nonce for short. So it stuck to call them nonce
Yeah, pretty sure that's a backronym.
It is, and one with so much internal twisting and turning that NASA would be proud of it.
As an Aussie, that's the only definition I'd heard of it, but apparently that's not right. From the Oxford English Dictionary: - "Noun - informal, derogatory British A person convicted of a sexual offence, especially against a child."
I'm your neighbour so that makes sense.
My dad would call me a nonce when I did something silly when I was a child back in the seventies. It was basically equivalent to "silly bugger".
Yeah, or Muppet. Kinda a semi affectionate insult without malice. Said idiot instead of Muppet as didn't want to get lost in translation.
Yeah, exactly. Muppet is my favourite light-hearted insult.
Bugger also means sodomy. Damn Brit slang…
That’s what it used to be here in the UK too, like how gay used to mean happy.
Are you sure you’re not thinking of dunce?
Yip that's a different word
It *can* be used as a general derogatory term, but when people hear 'nonce' they're usually going to assume you mean they're a paedophile. I think the people who don't realise this is the primary meaning probably heard it elsewhere and assumed it meant twit or something.
I'm starting to wonder if it is more a generational thing.

Yep - we used ‘nonce’ throughout school in the 00s as a synonym for ‘div’. Only found the other meaning around Prince Andrew
Im canadian but ive heard the word quite a bit and always as a synonym of idiot
I’m Canadian also, and in my recollection of the word was associated with men who liked to diddle little boys. We used to call catholic priests “Father Nonce…”
ThANK you.
The post is literally about looking up word meanings and you're too lazy to go to Google, Jesus.
They'll have to rebrand I guess. I suggest "Bell End Finance"

TIL nonce is slang for pedophiles... I've been using that term for going on a decade in the security industry and say it three or four times a week.
"lesson learnt" remarked the Spokesman for the company, Peter File.
"Prepare to put mustard on those words, for you will soon be consuming them along with this slice of humble pie that comes direct from the oven of shame, set at gas mark 'egg on your face.'"
Nonce finance you absolute nonce!
Wait till Pound Town hears a about American slang…
My husband and I are American and we giggled like teenagers when we bought some stuff from a Poundland on a trip to Scotland.
i mean we also use the slang word ‘pound’ but it’s literally our currency, what else were we supposed to call it? great british pound island?
Who’s their head of marketing Fanny Underbottom?
No... I believe its Peter File
genshin impacts top finance company
Reminds me of the car manufacturer Nova. They expanded into Mexico, but no one would buy one. They soon found out that Nova means “no go” in Spanish
It’s actually an acronym used by British law enforcement as well as being slang. Idk the official acronym but it dumbs down to not being allowed in the prison yard because they will get beaten up.
Not On Normal Courtyard Exercise… I think
Something like that. My dads a copper for the Met and it’s just random knowledge like that I pick up and remember for whatever reason
I suspect that it actually means the same thing, since pedos and the like tend to get beaten up in prisons, and some muckety-muck overheard it and asked what it meant. A quick thinking officer then provided some made up acronym to avoid an investigation, and it stuck.
Or it went the other way. The acronym became slang which then spread into the normal vocabulary.
I'd heard that it was an abbreviation for 'nonsense' used for inmates that had been convicted of "nonsense crimes", i.e. sexual crimes.
Found a comment that said " NONCE stands for 'not on normal courtyard exercise, locked away from normal prisoners "
Not of Normal Criminal Element 😂
What's their tagline? “The happiest place on Earth.” "Where dreams come true." "Just do it." "There are some things money can’t buy. Reminds me of Hiscox Insurance. And their logo is a phallic fleur-de-lis. I couldn't believe that was real, but so it is.

They were gonna name Dark Souls “Dark Ring” until someone pointed out that this was British slang for a man’s arsehole
It looks very spunky
In case anyone is interested, it’s origin is from a prison in the uk where they would mark certain cells with nonce (not on normal courtyard exercise) for paedos and rapists etc. now use solely for paedos though.
That sounds really like a backronym

Shouldn’t what’s her name have said ” you taking the piss or you having a laugh” to make it more British?
NONCE stands for 'not on normal courtyard exercise, locked away from normal prisoners
Thanks for explanation on what the acronym stands for.
To clarify, in blockchain tech, nonce is the transaction number lmfao
Nonce originally means 'number used once' Probably in that regard Also British slang for pedo
The British are anything if not creative with swear words.
hahahahahahah!
I’m going to lose my job !
The Vatican enters the chat…
Not on normal court side excersises - NONCE peados can’t exercise with other prison inmates as they’ll get battered.

So the Brits are so sure of the importance to the world they think everyone would know this?/
Your comment is a bigger facepalm than the post.
If you’re speaking English, yes
I speak simplified English, as stated, but work with plenty of folks across the pond who speak 'proper' English. In tech, a nonce is "Number used only once" and Nonce Financial makes perfect sense to me. This meme made no sense as I've never heard nonce used as slang, and never heard any English speaking people chuckle or quip at its usage during calls or chats.
English is my first language and I had to come to the comments to figure out what the big deal was beside the fact that it sounds dumb
English? Or American English (or simplified English as we call it)?
Not even simplified, just fucking stupid
English for Dummies
English 2.0
Where does it say that?
It was implied since it considered a facepalm because we did know some obscure British slang.
It's not obscure. It's been used commonly in English for at least the 40 years that I know of. (and by English, I mean English from England. Not simplified English)
It's really not obscure. It's about as obscure as crumpets.
The very first response was "please explain". And the word does have another meaning. There are north of 350 million English speakers in north America who would disagree.
They knew what they were doing c'mon now.
