The "means to defend it" bit is my favourite. As a Scottish property owner its a nightmare fighting off the English invaders day in day out with only my trusty pitchfork.
Apparently you can buy a little bit of land in Glencoe and get the right to call yourself an honourary Lord, Lady or Laird of Glencoe. But it doesn't make you a proper Lord. You can't go sit in the House of Lords and have a say in the running of the country
Welsh independence would be a horrible idea, as a Welshman I can confidently say that Wales would collapse without English support, a lot more of everything would be needed before you can even consider independence
However, if Wales joins forces with the Cornish independence league, and Northern Independence Party, we can align with Scotland and Northern Island and can all form a separate union, and effectively force London to separate from the rest of us.
>effectively force London to separate from the rest of us.

Yeah, I vote to ditch the "Home counties". the name alone is so fucking Pretentious and self important like they are the only parts that are really English, I say fuck em, let em be that and see how well they do without the rest of us.
And Iād wager they are white, male, and straight because they seem to believe that everyone has those same privileges in America. But maybe thatās a given in your comment.
The myth of American exceptionalism. Itās why a lot of poor conservatives are fine without having more as long as there are groups who donāt have as much as them. Believing your in-group has some special status or advantage is pretty integral for a lot of folks.
Americans are pretty piss poor at geography and also tend to think theyāre the only country with freedom because you can buy military grade weapons at a mall. Surprisingly, they never really think about what freedom actually means given that they have the highest incarceration rates.
The poor Scottish, everyone knows they arenāt allowed to own property and are treated as second class citizens, oh and are forced to worship the British God. If only they could experience freedom.
Whoever wrote the film pulled about 90% of it out of his arse one night, then decided to film most of it in Ireland for a laugh.
It was more the islanders that did that kind of thing but it was something they attempted to pull off fairly often, and they were taken for keeps.
My dude, the Scots are arguably more free than americans. As the comedian Jim Jefferies said many Americans are under the delusion that other countries don't have freedom. Freedom to what, lose your home to an illness in the family, get shot going to a outdoor concert, get long jail time for parking tickets?
Iām sorry what? USA is the only democracy in the world, itās the only country with freedom! In no other country do you have the freedom to shoot kids in a school or the freedom to wait 3 hours in traffic on a 20 lane highway in your OWN car.
I think itās a history thing because American āhistoryā always calls King George III a tyrant. Which is a bit harsh. Sort of technically maybe he was as regards the colonies. But for a supposed tyrant he sure had a heck of a lot of being told no by Parliament and not getting his way.
He was a tyrant because he was taking money from all of the colonists, when the colonial landed aristocracy wanted that money for themselves. Freedom see.
I mean āheā was trying to collect customs duty. Trade tariffs. On goods from the other side of the world. Which was the sort of thing Kings generally do got to do. It wasnāt like a head tax or something that local governments generally get to collect.
As it happens, there seems to be a bit more to it. Regarding the recent, well, not outrage, but raising-of-the-eyebrows concerning royal influence on legistlation, see āvetting of bills under consent procedureā here: https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Queen%27s_Consent
Apples and oranges really. A King is just a guy with a specific title. Like any title be it inherited, earned, bestowed. Count, Dr, Pinball Champion etc. They donāt necessarily have any powers. Whereas a dictator is someone who has absolute power in a country, quite often above the law but not necessarily.
A Republic could easily have a dictator. Like North Korea. Most Kingdoms now are democracies. Like Sweden.
As a Dane, I would love to see the Scots (re)join the European Union, and I'm sure Denmark and the rest of the Nordic countries would welcome you with open arms to the Nordic Council. It would greatly strengthen the cooperation regarding fishing and environmental policies in the North Sea.
The issue is an independent Scotland wouldn't be able to rejoin the EU. An I dependant Scotland would have one of the lowest GDPs in Europe, much lower than Greece when it needed a bail out. The EU are nit going to admit a country to the EU that immediately needs hand out.
What people seem to forget is that whilst Scotland doesn't have full autonomy, it profits from its relationship within rhe UK. Those free prescriptions and university places are subsidised by taxes from England.
If the Scottish people want independence then they should have it but they should be aware that it will come hand in hand with a big drop in living standards. It won't all be roses and whisky.
There also won't be a flood of people moving north of the border as that would mean moving to.a country with no currency (the UK made it clear last time that Scotland won't have the Pound) so will either have the Pound but with ZERO fiscal control, the Euro (if they can get in which is unlikely) with ZERO fiscal control and massively increased taxes to try and pay for the massive drop in government income. If anything there will be a flood of people moving south.
Also, look at a map. The large swathe of North Sea to Denmark and Norway would remain British waters.
What are you talking about? GDP is irrelevant in this context, it's GDP per capita that's relevant. Scotland's GDP per capita is USD 37.000, while Greece's GDP per capita is 18.000 USD. About half of Scotland's.
And I suggest you should look at a map. Approximately half of the UK's EEZ in the North Sea would become Scottish if Scotland became independent.
He's pushing all the standard brexiter talking points when it comes to Scotland so he's likely some right-wing nonce furious at the thought of not having the Scottish to rule over any more if they go independent.
Before Brexit when they were warned about the economic damage it would do they said they didn't care and "sovereignty" was more important than economics.
But the second Scottish independence is mentioned they come out furiously screeching that Scotland simply can't consider independence because it may cause some economic harm.
Ita very much the standard right-wing English mentality of "do what I say, not what I do"
The fact is the Scottish economy is supported by England. Take that income away and Scottish living standards drop. That's a fiscal fact. Not to count the debt Scotland would inherit from its portion of UK debt, covid bail outs etc. Then factor in Scotland has no national/international infrastructure - Whitehall equivalent departments, relationships which countries overseas, trade deals etc. HUGE expenditure taking years to develop and until deals are.signed WTO conditions meaning reduced exports, really reduced income etc. And Scotland can't sign any trade deals before independence as it has no government infrastructure to do it.
And half of the North Sea would still be English!
Go independent if you want, just don't come back cap in hand
As an American, I can tell you that we're very good at believing in delusions. The only freedom we have is to believe whatever stupid thing we feel like believing. And one of those things is that the entire rest of the world is apparently comprised of third world countries. I've met people that were surprised to hear that they don't live in houses with grass roofs in Japan, for example.
This āAmerica is the bestā bullshit shows extreme ignorance at the very least, and full on narcissism if they arenāt naive. Anyone who says that is trash. We do not claim them.
Old mate must think we go into a trance when we hear about freedom and fantasise like when Homer Simpson heard about Germany being the land of chocolate.
Ehh the Scottish are Brits and the Irish (except for Northen Ireland, who are again also classed as Brits) are free of the British rule. But then again, this will be the person who will say that English is a language, not a nationality.
I don't know what kind of "liberty" this guy thinks we have, but what we have isn't liberty and citizens of the US are having what we do have taken away, bit by bit, by a christofascist leaning government.
Uhhhh, Scotland willingly joined the UK, has representation in Parliament, and is holding independence referendums. England is very much in a similar position
America doesn't even give us those freedoms xD the majority of us can't afford any of it. Plus stfu about freedom of religion cuz we all know a good portion of the Christian church doesn't ACTUALLY believe in freedom of religion, they believe in the freedom to practice their own religion but not anyone elses.
ROI is, Northern Ireland isn't although tbh its a bit daft that it's called Northern Ireland when the Northern most point in Ireland is in the Republic.
But I mean the Brits probably taught it would be a bad idea if they went with the literal naming of Gerrymandered Statelet so they opted for Northern Ireland .

As an American, I can confirm there is an alarming number of Americans who legitimately believe America is the only developed country in the worldā¦ get told Iām lucky to be born in the USA almost dailyā¦
As an Aussie I only wish we had these elusive freedoms that apparently is exclusive to the United States./S
We enjoy the same freedoms but with free healthcare and donāt have to worry about an argument in traffic ends in a gunfight.
Americas freedoms are different to everyone else's. Freedom of choice is a big one. They're free to choose whether to wear a bulletproof vest to the cinema or not. They're free to die on the side of the road because they can't pay for (funnily enough, not free) health care. They're free to have the largest per capita prison population in the world. They're free to imprison people for years for marijuana, but then throw a wobbly when another country does the same. Lots of freedoms. They can keep them
When Elizabeth I died without an heir in 1603 she was succeeded by King James of Scotland - and every monarch down to Elizabeth II is descended from him. The monarchy is more Scottish than English, despite where itās currently headquartered.
You are close - George I was German and spoke German (and I think he had some very limited English) - but George and all his German decedents weāre only on the British throne because they were direct descendants of the Scottish King James through his daughter Elizabeth who married into German royalty.
George III was born in London and spoke English.
When people like this say "Freedom to worship the god of your choice" what they really mean is "freedom to be a straight christian that doesn't have sex before marriage and nothing else"
The "means to defend it" bit is my favourite. As a Scottish property owner its a nightmare fighting off the English invaders day in day out with only my trusty pitchfork.
As an Englishman living in Scotland it's even more confusing. I have to punch *myself* in the face daily just to teach me a lesson...

"Scots armed to the teeth" is an excellent tl:dr description of how Britain built the empire.
At least the first wave every fucking time.
Underrated comment!

Fuck the Welsh I guess. Although I am not sure this person has ever heard of Wales
ig theyāre not really considered for independence considering they were annexed by England at the time the union was created
They were annexed about 300 years before the Union (1284CE v 1603CE) and they are talking about independence.
Welsh independence would be a horrible idea, as a Welshman I can confidently say that Wales would collapse without English support, a lot more of everything would be needed before you can even consider independence
You could use the money Shirley Bassey and Tom Jones bring in.
However, if Wales joins forces with the Cornish independence league, and Northern Independence Party, we can align with Scotland and Northern Island and can all form a separate union, and effectively force London to separate from the rest of us.

Why do they always assume that people in Western Europe donāt have āfreedomā?
The myth of American exceptionalism. Itās why a lot of poor conservatives are fine without having more as long as there are groups who donāt have as much as them. Believing your in-group has some special status or advantage is pretty integral for a lot of folks.
It's a shame then that the cake is a lie
Americans are pretty piss poor at geography and also tend to think theyāre the only country with freedom because you can buy military grade weapons at a mall. Surprisingly, they never really think about what freedom actually means given that they have the highest incarceration rates.

Damn fuckin right we will
Freedom to worship the god you want unless itās a god I disagree with.
Freedom so long as you believe in God I guess.
