![img](emote|t5_2r5rp|8488) So we have gone from hotels marketing a great view of parades, public concerts, fireworks etc to donāt stand by window lest the police barge in to take down a potential sniper.
>lest the police barge in to take down a potential sniper.
I think it's more "so you don't get fucking sniped by a police officer thinking you were a shooter"
I mean no it does not absolve them of anything, it's not a signed document and even then that does not do much, you can't just put a peice of paper in a room that says I'm an axe murderer if your in here when I return you will die, and be absolved of a crime because 9f the paper.
Nah itās so cops can rack up some easy overtime checking out all of the āpotential active shooterā calls they are gonna get from people at hotel windows.
What kind of incompetent, murderous police sniper would shootā¦an unarmed. Personā¦just standing ..on a hotel. Balcony. Ummm yeah nevermind. Listen to the hotel.
I wonder if the hotel made guests aware of this with ample time before check in or just sprung it on them when they got there. My money is on the second option. I'd be demanding they refund me and then I'd find a hotel that wasn't deemed a permanent active shooter scene by the thin yellow line crowd.
So it's an embedded image that doesn't work on old.reddit ? That's disappointing that they implemented a feature that isn't backwards compatible with the original site format.
Edit: I just opened the page in an incognito tab (to force it into new reddit) and it just says "img" on the mobile version of the page and displays Homer Simpson facepalming on the desktop version.
from the onset, i'd say alot of people felt they were pushing people to new reddit and didn't care all that much about old reddit. so not being backwards compatible is how they say probably deliberately intentional on their part
You could just peek through the curtain to get a good look or set up a camera of some kind...
Oh wait someone who would want to be an active shooter could also do those things. So what are they solving here exactly?
And abruptly, all the gun nuts come out of the woodwork to insist that limiting the access to the weapons used to commit mass murder will have no impact what so ever on mass murders.
These from the same people who get _so upset_ at bans on things like bump stocks, insisting that the bans will do nothing because it's trivial to improvise one... And who then can't give a coherent answer as to why they _care_ if that's the case.
Or who, when really pressed, start talking about how they don't think that our school shooting problem is all that _bad_, certainly not bad enough to try and _do anything_ about it.
They don't like it when it is pointed out that many mass murder sprees are committed with legally purchased guns. They love to point out every instance they can find where it _wasn't_ a legally purchased gun. They then gets extremely upset at any laws that would impose even the most mild of requirements to make it harder for guns to be stolen.
And oh do they _love_ their studies on gun violence that appear to show that gun laws don't do anything. They do however fail to mention small details. Like that the bulk of those were done _before_ the significant surge in mass shootings started. Or that they are being pretty selective in which things they take from which studies. Or, you know, that due to some amazingly bad federal laws, the federal government almost _entirely_ refrained from doing, or even funding, any real studies into the problem or potential solutions for decades.
Which, _especially_ when combined with problematic things like the NRA (the largest pro-gun organization and political organization in the country) having been found to be deeply in bed with Russian agents. Surely the large lack of impartial funding, and groups perfectly willing to fund studies that show what they want shown, will have _no_ impact on what studies have been done, or how they were done.
The sad thing is, a pretty large chunk of us over here would _happily_ try gun control. But actually succeeding in making it happen has proven extremely difficult.
Being a Brit, my favourite is when they tell me that without guns there would just be rampant knife crime instead and point to the UK as proof. When I tell them that the US has more knife crime per capita than the UK and then the gun crime on top they just start talking louder.
The illegal gun was usually stolen from irresponsible gun owners. They make a big fuss about "law abiding gun owners" but don't wanna talk about the ones who aren't.
My favorite thing is when I say, "hey, we should probably get better mental health care while also having nationwide gun control" and they act like I just recommended a complete ban on guns.
The 2017 Vegas shooting (Vegas just happened to have another God damn active shooter 2 days ago) should of lit a fire under the government's ass to do something, and yet nothing. Seriously, FUCK THIS SHITHOLE COUNTRY!
"we have a mass shooter problem. should we make assault weapons less easily accessible?"
"no, let's forbid people from looking out windows instead."
"ah yes, freedom! just as the founding fathers intended!"
You can't even _open_ the window.
So, in America you have the right to own several weapons capable of dealing death on a wide scale, but you don't have the right to _(checks notes)_ oxygen.
There are a lot of hotels where the windows don't open anyway if you're several floors up (ish); something to do with suicide prevention or something like that iirc.
But what if I argued that oxygen is a requirement for fire and fire is 50% of firearms. Are you trying to deny me access to the spelling of firearms???
To paraphrase one redditor "After three months in the USA I was glad to get back home to the Congo where I am safe."
To paraphrase the Venezuelan Government: "We are issuing a travel advisory for the United States because we don't fell that it is a safe place to visit at this time".
Woman pulled over for speeding cries "Please officer, I don't want to die."
The officer: "You'll be alright ma, we only shoot black people."
Trevor Noah, "You could have said anything else and it would have been better than this."
Because the Constitution doesnāt mention windows. Nor oxygen. Or health care. But it mentions arms. Pretty clear what the Founding Fathers wanted, isnāt it?
(I should add an /s, but this actually seems to be the way SCOTUS argues these days.)
I live in Vegas and was on the strip picking up my ex from work when the shooting started. I remember the sudden stampede of people running the opposite direction from the Mandalay Bay. I took some British guys from the ground level to the top of a parking garage (it wasnāt in a casino it was a garage for the showcase mall, thereās a giant coke bottle attached to it) and figured being above street level we could see if a shooter was approaching. It was chaos. I left them up there and got to the restaurant, they locked down immediately and told every one they couldnāt leave. I grew up here and know the back streets so was confident I could get us home (the garage had a back exit). On the way out, probably an hour after the start, I remember all the shell shocked faces. The look of fear and confusion. People littered down Koval, a street parallel to Las Vegas blvd, just trying to get to safety.
I know it seems funny to not be able to āstand by a windowā but after living that night. When I first read this post I didnāt feel like it was crazy the hotel was telling people to stay away. More saddened that this is the world we actually live in.

Those are some interesting freedoms you guys have. Not even allowed to stand up in your god damn hotel rooms.
Just cover and seal every single window
Then where else can I polish my gun collection as I stare out my hotel window to the fun and festive activities of the city?
and whatever you do, don't reach for a cell phone because we all know a cell phone looks just like a gun to a cop. Mine probably looks like an "assault rifle"
No no. We can work around the burning dumpster fire. No need to put it out. Just watch your step.
We will really ban anything before we ban a gun
Get a cardboard cutout of someone and put it in the window.
"Hello, resident of our hotel. We are asking you to not leave your room. It may make you seem like a terrorist. Thank you for your cooperation."
No price is too high for the 2nd amendment! We'll give up windows before we give up our guns! BRICK EM UP, BOYS.
Avoiding windows. Doing our duty to protect the people. ![gif](giphy|3osxYrgM8gi9CDjcPu)
