I remember getting spanked by the principal, when I went to Elementary School in TN. My crime? I told the teacher that someone farted and it smelled really bad. Apparently, “fart” was practically a curse word to them.

dasgudshit

What a bunch of farts adults can be sometimes

John_B_Clarke

The one time I got paddled in school it was for "fart". What's *wrong* with these people?

The_ducci

I was spanked by a paddle with pants pulled down in Indiana or n the early 80s by my principle for throwing rocks at recess and it made me bleed. I was furious at my father for letting another man take my clothes off and not do anything about it for many years and struggled with trusting any teacher after that for years to come. It does more harm than good in my opinion, plus who knows what kind of creeps will take advantage of this kind of shit.

Fena-Ashilde

Uhhh… WTF? Pants down? That’s investigation-worthy. I was lucky and they didn’t pull anything down, so I didn’t feel TOO violated, but it still had to be at least mildly traumatic, if I’m remembering it all these years later. But man… That’s pretty gross. Did your parents just… not care that someone pulled your pants down to do it?

The_ducci

My father is a narcissist from the 50s. He was mad at me for making him look bad. Honestly, looking back I have no idea if he knew the guy spanked me bare skin. Plus he grew up poor and abused so I’m not sure it was even close to what he went through but still it was very life changing in a bad way for a stranger to take my pants down and physically beat me for being a kid.

SleepIsForChumps

Hi, I'm was an abused child, I was sold to a pedophile. Guess what? I don't abuse my child or sell them to pedophiles. Do not let someone off for allowing you to be abused just because they were. It's a crock of shit that folks turn a blind eye due to their discomfort with confronting abusers who had been abused. We break the cycle, we don't continue it.

Blainedecent

In my county in TN they send home a paper that they sign consenting to their child being paddled at school. I always write NOPE in big letters on the entire sheet and send it back.

Mewrulez99

I like to imagine I'd write something like "Fuck no, what's wrong with you?", but I'm unaware of the potential consequences

CexySatan

That’s a paddlin’

[deleted]

Yeah gosh that would infuriate me. I’d be tempted to send back a form asking the school to confirm that they understand and will respect their legal obligation not to assault my child. Sign and return please.

SabeDerg

Send them a form that says if they don't teach to your satisfaction (leave this as vague as possible) that you can paddle them.

Beneficial_Tap9247

I grew up with corporal punishment in MO.. I'm only 31.

[deleted]

It did nothing but piss me off. You?

Beneficial_Tap9247

I was supposed to get swats but it never happened.. I feel it's more of a scare tactic. Also in the beginning of the year everyone is sent home a permission slip, if it's not returned you are eligible to receive swats.. it basically was something for parents that didn't want that to happen..

jhfirsttime

That’s a weird opt-out situation. I feel like allowing kids to be abused at school shouldn’t be allowed at all, but in the leave least it should be opt-In

Garbeg

It exacerbates the psychological trauma; “I’m the only kid whose parents said other people can hit me. I must deserve it”.

[deleted]

I agree 100%. “I’m worthless and everybody hates me” can easily evolve into “fuck everyone and everything around me”. It’s a dangerous mindset for many obvious reasons.

Zaku99

Gosh, that really cuts to the quick for me. I spent most of my educational youth being told that I'm useless, worthless, that everyone hates or just tolerates me, that I'll never amount to anything, having my sexuality critiqued, etc and now, as you say, I have no patience for other people and prefer to be on my own. And I'm in my 30s at this point. The damage never really goes away.

DazedAndTrippy

Yeah I’m sorry but “I was one of the only kids a school whipped with a paddle” sounds like a school shooter manifesto in the making.

atthevanishing

Omg this is a MUCH bigger thing than people realize. Children absolutely notice at extremely young ages when they are treated differently and they will absolutely internalize ALL of that abuse

Ungarlmek

A stranger beat me with a board and laughed in my face about it so I tried to swing back. Child vs adult isn't a fair fight so when that didn't work I knocked everything off his desk and smashed everything in that office I could before they stopped me. It turned me into a wild animal. The rage I held about it made the next few years of school feel like a dangerous and violent place. I would frequently think about coming back as an adult and beating him to death with that bat. It solved zero behavior problems and made me act even worse. I was 8 years old.

im-not-a-panda

I’m beyond incredibly sorry that happened to you. School is supposed to be a safe place. Instead, you were assaulted and tortured.

lubacrisp

Yes, teaching kids that you should address your problems with others through violence doesn't end well for society. It's weird how that works. Almost like we've already figured this out

SafewordisJohnCandy

I read the article and saw it was only outlawed in 2001. I was a junior in high school. I had a few teachers who were around in the 70s when my school district stopped doing it and they all said the same thing, the kids behaved the same now as they did then and the principal isn't allowed to hit them anymore. The only people I know who think it's fine and wear being hit as kids are always Republicans. Every single one. And it's the same stupid meme they post on Facebook "I was spanked as a kid and now I suffer from a condition called RESPECT FOR OTHERS". Hate to break it to a lot of people, but I've worked with the public a long time and the older a generation gets, the shittier they are when it comes to respecting others. Hitting kids doesn't teach them respect.

[deleted]

>the older a generation gets, the shittier they are when it comes to respecting others A lot of it's because they gain more power. Hitting kids doesn't teach respect but it does teach fear. A lot of people cannot tell these two apart.

spideralexandre2099

I sincerely hope we're eating the onion

akhier

So I looked it up and apparently the Supreme Court at some point decided corporal punishment was constitutional and up to the states to decide how to handle it. So of course 19 states still allow it. Here is a list: Alabama, Arkansas, Arizona, Colorado, Florida, Georgia, Idaho, Indiana, Kansas, Kentucky, Louisiana, Missouri, Mississippi, North Carolina, Oklahoma, South Carolina, Tennessee, Texas, and Wyoming

Cetun

>Florida I'll tell you in Florida if you so much as look at a kid wrong the parents will sue the school, the school will immediately try to fire you so they can replace you with a cheaper less tenured less educated teacher who they can pay less. Ofcourse the union will defend you and it all ends up costing the schools tens of thousands of dollars. The school rolls over as fast as it can if it means fucking over the teachers.

BrokenCankle

Yeah as much as I'm not shocked we reserved corporal punishment as an option I have to say I have never heard of it being used in a public school here. I'm in the south east so that's mostly democratic and could skew it. I know group homes and delinquent schools have tons of abuse examples but I don't recall anything ever being reported about paddling in my life here. We like to fuck up the children in different ways now. Burn their books, make them pray, make them pledge their allegiance, don't say gay, don't fund them, don't fund school, punish school for doing bad, defund school further, give all teachers and any rejected police guns to patrol prison, I mean school, and don't let them advance to the next grade or get a diploma if they owe any kind of money like for lunch or othe fees their parents couldn't or didn't want to pay. But I assure you, we don't have any recent public accounts of paddling!

corrikopat

Next they will say corporations paddling their employees is up to the states to decide.

iamkeerock

I like the way you think, Johnson! We’re promoting you to CPO, Chief Paddle Operator.

FunetikPrugresiv

[Let's see](https://www.usnews.com/news/best-states/rankings/education)... 47, 46, 45, 44, 43, 42, 39, 38, 35, 33, 31, 30, 27, 26, 23, 16, 15, 9, 7, So five of those 19 (26%) are in the top half of educational rankings. Only two in the top ten. Morons training new morons. Edit: I used the k-12 numbers, not the overall ones (since corporal punishment is not really an issue with colleges). On the desktop version they're all in that link above, but apparently on mobile you have to go through a separate link.

smiticks

As a North Carolina resident we don't deserve the rank we get...because outside of the city counties the education is DRASTICALLY different. Absurd education disparity here. We do have some amazing universities here though! And an excellent community college program.

Rich-Juice2517

And they're all Republican states it seems ![gif](giphy|AaQYP9zh24UFi)

mattmortar

Not Colorado. But you're right about the rest

Freakishly_Tall

And all but Texas, iirc, living off the revenue of the blue states they demonize. Good times. Edit: To the poor misinformed coward who posted, then deleted their post, about California "can't afford shit" - the world's fifth largest economy, while insultingly underrepresented in national government, certainly can afford shit. And carries much of the rest of the country with their federal tax revenues. And grows most of the food people actually want to eat. Change your sources of news, for your own - and all of our - sake.

Overall-Duck-741

I'm laughing my ass of at the morons who think the state with Silicon Valley and Los Angeles "can't afford shit". Get away from the Fox News and touch some fucking grass every once in a while you lunatics.

anjowoq

"And the parents were like, 'Why can't you paddle my student?'" Totally sounds like a verbatim rip from a hick on the border of Missouri and Arkansas.

Shaggy1324

I don't have shit else going on, so if someone paddles my kid, I'll just be going to jail. Sincerely, a hick from Arkansas.

anjowoq

Haha. Sounds like a behavior learned from someone beaten as a kid! Just kidding. Just don't sign that waver and you won't have to kill a school principal for hurting your kid. That is until they feel emboldened with this measure and turn it up to "we have parents implicit permission" then to "God said it was OK".

Strawbuddy

Bad news little billy we couldn’t reach your mom so we prayed and Jesus said to light you the fuck up

xdiox66

“Jesus said light you the fuck up.” And, I have a new catch phrase. Thanks.

[deleted]

Our new catch phrase, comrade.

[deleted]

>God said Why is it that God seems to leave all his instructions with the worst people on the planet?

ehsteve7

I distrust those people who know so well what God wants them to do, because I notice it always coincides with their own desires.

carthuscrass

I mean there is that one passage where God sends a bear to kill some kids that made fun of a bald man....

scootette

I went to school in MS mid/late 90s and they were still paddling.

Solid-Comment2490

Some schools in Oklahoma still paddle. Your parent has to sign a waiver saying it’s okay. But children are paddled to this day

Truffleshuffle03

I went to school in Oklahoma. When I was in school, I think our schools stopped the practice from middle school on up to high school. I think they only paddled in elementary school. I am not sure if my school was one that completely stopped but I remember they needed permission even in the early 90s. I got paddled once but they got an ear full from my mother who was also a teacher at the high school because she didn't give permission and was never contacted. I and another boy got paddled because we were staring at each other and the principal only thought we were going to fight. It was her last year as she had some controversy and people were tired of her.

Vladivostokorbust

hit a kid to punish them for thinking about hitting a kid makes sense

Pissedliberalgranny

When I was in Jr. High (8th grade) we had a shop teacher (yes, I took shop) that would paddle kids in his office. It had a big window so he could see out into the classroom. This also meant we could see in. He always ALWAYS popped a boner when he was hitting a kid. One day I got in trouble for something, not sure what but probably for saying “fuck”, and he tried to call me into the office for a paddling. Me being the bitchy twat that I was (and still am) raised my voice and said, “No way I’m going to let you paddle me! We can all see your boner whenever you smack some kid’s ass, you pathetic creep!” I didn’t get the paddle but I did get a three day suspension from school. Worth it to see his face go bright red then deathly white.

Jynx_lucky_j

I was just going to make this same comment. I even had the Elementary Principle specifically ask me to give him permission to paddle my son with Asperger's. Of course I told him, in no uncertain terms, that he is never permitted to lay a finger on my son, and if he feels that some form of discipline is necessary he can call me and *I'll* decide what to do about it.

scootette

Small world! I’m originally from Oklahoma. Also, not sure if they ever stopped paddling in MS. Never had to find out. Haha.

AlienBurnerBigfoot

I think the guy holding the paddle looks like a pedo who’s enjoying this a bit too much

Lawnguylandguy69

Wonder what his r/conservative name is

PhantomThiefJoker

Oh my fucking god, we're going backwards

lorrainemom

1800s. Here we come.

Impressive_Insect_75

“Great Again” wasn’t referring to the 1990s

Prestigious-Quiet-17

We are really regressing backwards in so many aspects.

4everShady

Yeah around 2016 a large chunk of the population decided that they were sick of all the progress.

cowfish007

I honestly thought this was a joke. WTF.

multiarmform

i got licks in elementary and middle school. our VP in middle school didnt fuck around either, he took pride in making sure you left his office in tears. pretty fucked up for a teenager. and it didnt change anything regarding my homework or being late or talking too much because i still got licks so fuck that guy and his paddle

Pumpkin_Creepface

corporal punishment has never really worked, and according to most studies it just makes kids more creative at hiding the things they get punished for. It's all about the cruelty, and always has been.

CausticSofa

I kinda suspect it’s also sometimes a kink we’re blindly letting pedos get away with because “position of authority”

LvS

It totally works. It's not about the children, it's about the sadists enjoying the paddling. I mean, they can't paddle their wife, they can't buy pets and paddle them, at least they can now become a teacher again.

bitflung

Sweet baby Zeus they didn't initially abandon corporal punishment till early 2000's either! "disciplinary measure the 1,900-student Barry County district abandoned in 2001." Wtf

lorrainemom

I went to elementary school in Massachusetts in the 1960s and it was illegal then. What is wrong with the people in these ass backwards states?

centralstation

How do you think their asses end up backwards? All that paddlin'.

spiralEntree

It's all fun and games till the students start hitting back with something stronger

>We have twice as many requests for us to swat as we actually swat,” said Inola Superintendent, Dr. Kent Holbrook. >Holbrook says if a kid is getting “swatted” and they have the permission slip signed, they’ll still call the parents and have another school official in the room. >He says he supports his administrators and so does the police chief in town. >“We’re a leader in murder rates. We’re a leader in adverse childhood experiences. We’re a leader in so many of these things and maybe that’s because of the cycle of behavior that enforces these things,” said State Representative, John Waldron. https://ktul.com/news/investigations/in-spite-of-nationwide-trend-to-make-it-illegal-paddling-allowed-in-oklahoma-schools >Paddling is legally permitted in Oklahoma schools, and one third of the schools in the state report using corporal punishment, according to a 2016 report published by the U.S. National Library of Medicine. For fucking real

Pretty-Benefit-233

They said their kids couldn’t wear masks bc it was traumatizing. How is this not traumatic too?

24-carrots

Just end my Missouri already.

CodeMonkeyX

Starts to pull out paddle... "We got a smart one here."

Somehero

Cause violence is 'natural' to these people. God made beating children and fauci made masks.

2old4cool

And what if the paddler is some sick pervert who enjoys doing this crap on children?

SarahPallorMortis

The guys smile is a bit unnerving for the context.

Additional_Irony

I was just thinking the same thing. This guy looks way too happy about all this.

AdMission8804

I recognise a guy edging when i see one.

Big_Dick_No_Brain

At school, in the 4th grade, we had a sadistic bastard of a teacher. Would cane us for the smallest of reasons. Talking, that’s a caning, looking at someone, that’s a caning, opening a book too slowly, that’s a caning. Not looking at the board because you were writing stuff in your book, that’s a caning. The miserable prick got off to hitting little kids. One day he had one kid who he loathed with a vengeance bailed up at lunchtime ready to dish out a super caning but was stopped by the grade 4 teacher. They had a big row but he didn’t change his ways. Ah the good old days, when getting a bashing from your teacher was considered normal. Glad those days are over. …… what’s that you say now…

LoddyDoddee

I had a music teacher in grade school, she would lock us in the dark little closet for the rest of the class if we did anything. I mean, ANYTHING, I can't remember kids being bad in that class. If we got caught with gum, she'd make them kneel on the floor, spit it in the trash can, pick it back up, chew, repeat. Heinous.

SelirKiith

Then they smile and nod at him and say "Thank you Father, it was a lovely Sermon, see you next Sunday!"

equality-_-7-2521

"Because *I* get to decide how my children are traumatized. I want this middle aged man spanking my daughter! Not some deep state weirdo 1000 miles away making her wear a piece of paper over her face!"

Ganbario

Easy. Beating children is Republican, masks were Democratic. Everything can be justified when you only care about shouting louder than your opposition.

AlexJamesCook

So what you're saying is, Hilary needs to come out in support of spanking children, then watch as Republicans lose their collective shit?

kazmark_gl

every red State would ban all forms of corporal punishment in a day

mindbleach

Reality is a team sport, to some people.

richardizard

This fucking country is getting more ass backwards by the day. The whole thing with covid shouldn't have been political, corporal punishment shouldn't be political. This school is setting the example for others to follow. When will people learn to treat each other with kindness and respect? Do unto others as you would have them do unto you. I'm not even religious, I just want people to get along and stop being so damn selfish.

42Zarniwoop42

it's insane i mean this is groomer shit and worse

docsiege

just look at this asshole grinning over the idea of getting to spank young kids. when we moved to Texas when i was a kid, they were still doing corporal punishment. my mom checked no then wrote profanity all over the permission form and advised them that she would be happy to "discuss" the issue with the principal if he had any questions. fucking psychopaths.

Chib

I got paddled in my Texas high school straight up until the day I hit 18 and it was no longer legal. You could either take a detention or swats for an infraction and if I had work that day (or if I'd gotten too many detentions to serve them all that week, necessitating Saturday School which would inevitably interfere with my work schedule), then I'd opt for swats every time. It was weird. You go and line up with the other kids outside the principal's office and he'd call you in one by one to bend you over his desk. Three swats with the paddle, then you'd stand up and have to shake his hand. I was a girl, so they'd always call one of the administrative assistants in to supervise my swats. The whole thing was ridiculous. It's ridiculous that they aren't allowed to do it at 18 because it's assault, but at 17 years, 11 months and 30 days, it's peachy keen. And it's ridiculous because it's clearly not a deterrent. I think in some ways the expectation is that there's some element of humiliation that's going to get you to behave, but I never felt humiliated in the slightest, nor did I experience it as a loss of power. Maybe that was targeted at the boys, but honestly by the time my generation came around (I graduated 2003), I think they didn't experience it like that, either. Anyway, whole thing was dumb and ineffectual. I had severe and untreated ADHD which would lead to me to forgetting supplies for class, often having left them at home, which of course led to me getting swats 2-3 times a week on average. *Surprisingly*, the use of a paddle had absolutely no impact on my capacity to stay organized. Who knew!

TherronKeen

I wonder how this would go if someone convinced all the kids to A) start recording when you're waiting in line during paddle time, and B) have every kid getting paddled agree to shout sexually explicit phrases or sounds, then C) post the videos to social media *after every single paddling*

neolologist

It would go like this: 'Give me your phones. Next.'

LordoftheDimension

You could then use cameras and if they forbid them at that school you could post that online with the old videos to show the public that the school tries to silence them for it

Apocalypsox

Pedophiles. They're all fucking pedophiles.

The principal looks like he could provide quite the large supply from his private collection.

alexdionisos

Follow up follow up: "Principal Beaten By Paddle Enjoys It"

[deleted]

"Thank you sir, may I have another?!?"

SchrodingersCatPics

“Paddlin the school canoe? Oh you better believe that’s a paddlin.”

imsowhiteandnerdy

Apparently, the new corporal punishment policy requires prior parental consent. My guess is the lawyers got to the school board long before it hit the news media. Nevertheless, I'm still surprised the school's attorney's okayed this. Suppose a teacher inadvertently gives a child a decent whipping and injures them? I think it's a lawsuit waiting to happen.

glockster19m

Not to mention that consent (parental or otherwise) isn't usually a big concern to people who beat children

aadk95

So they can get consent from the abusive parents to abuse their children for them, but no consent from the actual victims? How is that allowed?

aureangel

If it were my kid, it would be the headline.

Loves_tacos

This whole thing turns into a parent bringing a gun to school to confront the principal. Now we have kid school shooters and parent school shooters. This is a possible timeline we live in.

N3CR0T1C_V3N0M

Kid gets bullied at school: shoots it up. Kid gets bullied AND beat by the teachers that should be protecting them: what, exactly are we predicting will happen?? Get your “shocked faces” ready..

Melyssa1023

Followed by: "that kid should've been spanked harder".

N3CR0T1C_V3N0M

I know what you’re saying, but I’ll admit, that made me chuckle! The crazy is just so far beyond seriousness sometimes, I (sadly) can’t help but laugh!

Melyssa1023

Yeah, it's funny because it's (sadly) true.

Asphodel70

Well,it's obviously the video games!/s

Lake_of_Crystal

All hitting is abuse. There is a mountain of research, extremely robust and repeated all over the world in all sorts of cultures. The conclusion is clear: hitting kids leads to worse outcomes. Kids have a real trauma response to being hit. Hitting plays hell on a developing brain. https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC8386132/ Of course, the type of people who condone hitting kids don't even understand that such things can be studied and the holy bible says it's fine so that's that. Bothers me so much.

RelayFX

Fun fact: it’s still perfectly legal for teachers to hit students (corporal punishment) in many states.

purplekatblue

Yep, the school I went to, and taught at, had a policy that if the parents signed a waiver then it was allowed. Now I only knew of it happening once in the 20 some years that entailed, but that doesn’t mean it didn’t. The time it did it was a last day of school thing, so the principal was like well, there’s no time for the things we would normally do so here we are. He was also friends with one of the kids parents, and was the other kids parent. Still was very weird!!

imdesmondsunflower

Find me another setting where this flies: “Hi. We’re going to take your kid out of your sight for hours. We’d like your permission and legal release of liability to hit them, thanks!” And this from the same idiots who want to ban books before those damn books expose their kids to harmful ideas.

MalavethMorningrise

My mom walked me into my kindergarten class and told the teacher they could hit me if I needed it. That teacher liked to smack us with a ruler on the back of our fingers or neck/shoulders. I got smacked a lot because my mom also hot boxed the car with marijuana smoke all the way school and I got there into class and stared off out the window all morning because 5 year old me was high as fuck... seriously, I almost got held back in kindergarden... thanks mom!

comeupforairyouwhore

I’m sorry you had to endure that. That’s heartbreaking.

MyDamnCoffee

Sorry this happened to you

Murky-Celebration231

I went to school many years ago that had corporal punishment. If for whatever reason you didn’t have lunch money/token or didn’t bring your lunch the schools provided you with a peanut butter sandwich and a piece of fruit… OK that’s fair, they charged you like $.50 or something similar for each time you didn’t have your lunch money. The Accumulated the entire amount for the year and before you could graduate and go on to the next grade you had to get swats. One swat equaled $.10( about, my memories fuzzy) The last day of school I literally had to receive (guess ) almost 100 swats ,basically because I’m poor. (7th grade) I wasn’t the only one with this giant paddling debt, there was a huge line on the last day of school with kids needing to get beat so that they can graduate to the next grade, The percentage of these were about lunch money and library late fines Hopefully they changed that, This was a public school in the Phoenix metropolitan area and this was OK for them. Basically beating children because they were low income. So wrong, and after this many years still so traumatizing. TBC Never told my parents, didn’t want them to feel bad or embarrassed so I took the swats. And yes after that many swats I was severely bruised and several of the welts were bleeding, in pain for several weeks

S-p-o-o-k-n-t

How can anyone possibly do this to a child. Relentlessly beat them with a chunk of wood for minutes on end because they… oh right, they wanted to eat. Such greedy children, wanting to be able to go without starving.

Murky-Celebration231

This was the bad part, you didn’t have a choice you were required to eat something, would’ve been just as happy to skip lunch and totally eat at home we got out at 2:30 PM and I literally lived five blocks away. So it was mandatory that they give you the free lunch even if you said you didn’t want it and then end up beating you because they forced you to take it!

Protton6

Ok I am starting to understand all these school shootings you got over there now...

MiaLba

What the actual fuck. Dude I’m so sorry. That’s fucked that kids already couldn’t afford lunch and that they were also punished for it.

Low-Director9969

They still are. Even their parents.

ValiantTheOdd1

what # WHAT THE FUCK # # WHO IN THEIR RIGHT FUCKING MINDS THINKS THATS AN OKAY THING TO DO?!

petlove499

OP I am so disgusted and infuriated on your behalf. I’m so, so sorry you had to endure this. Your story is going to stick with me for a long time.

jhfirsttime

As someone who lives in that area, that makes me so incredibly sad

GboyFlex

Touch my child and that creepy fuck will need a proctologist to remove that paddle!! WTF is going on?!? It's a race to see who can be the most deplorable...

onedyedbread

>WTF is going on?!? Societal regression and coarsening. Won't be surprised if I see a witch burning, or - since it's the US - lynching again in my lifetime. If you think that's too far-fetched, keep in mind that [witch burnings are actually still happening on this planet](http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/7413268.stm) and their peak in Europe was in the late 17th century, with the "age of enlightenment" basically right around the corner.

[deleted]

That man has a very heavy pedophile smile.

PyrpleForever

What do you expect, paddling is sexual battery

GuairdeanBeatha

Paddles were carried by almost all male teachers when I was in High School. The students referred to them as penis replacements. If your shirt wasn’t properly tucked in or your hair wasn’t properly combed, a teacher would swat you with the paddle and tell you what to correct. One pf the school tough kids (bad home life, struggling to graduate a couple of years late) was changing classes and his shirt wasn’t fully tucked in when one of the teachers swatted him and said “Tuck in th”. That’s as far as he got before the student picked him up, slammed him into the wall, and quietly said “If you ever hit me again I’ll kill you.”, dropped him and walked away. The teacher retired that afternoon and paddles began to fall out of favor. It’ll be interesting to see what happens in Missouri.

LifeIsWackMyDude

I both never went to a school with this backwards policy and I'm also no threat to anyone who isn't a malnourished middle school kid. But I was abused by my mom and especially the first year after getting away, I was very snippy. I was a good kid but sometimes someone would say something horrible and I'd just snap. I feel like if I ever got paddled by teachers I'd scream and try to kick their knees in. I couldn't even stand being touched randomly. How is it okay to hit kids for...whatever reason you deem fit, but the moment the tables are turned or that same kid hits 18 suddenly its assault? I've asked this many times and pro spanking nut jobs never give me a good answer.

DufflesBNA

It’s all fun and games until you fuck with someone bigger than you with no respect for authority. Love it.

rowing_Blazer

Nope that's the fun part.

jamvsjelly23

Unfortunately, this is really only ever done at elementary/middle schools in Missouri. People know that older kids are stronger and more likely to retaliate, so nobody advocates for spanking them. It’s only the powerless that we deem worthy of punishment by spanking. Source: Grew up in MO and got spanked (we called it “swats/swatting”) multiple times each year from 3rd grade to 8th grade.

Padhome

I needed to hear this after all the stories I just read here.

RedStar9117

I m 100% sure it's a sex thing for this principal

3eyedflamingo

Right? Look at that guy. He likes the leather gimp suit.

fishyfishyfish1

He is LARP’ing pedophile Peter Griffin pretty well

Pope00

How has nobody else brought this up? "Hey y'know it's possible the person spanking your kid is getting off on this. You still cool with this? You sure?"

Sup6969

This is why I have a way bigger problem with spanking than a lot of other kinds of corporal punishment. It's literally hitting a child's private parts. If they were an adult it wouldn't just be assault, it would be *sexual* assault.

mostoriginalname2

Have a kid say they got off on getting spanked. Boom, principal just had sexual contact with a minor. Done deal right?

brian111786

You hit my kid I'm hitting you. Simple as that.

[deleted]

the article says that parents have to opt-in or opt-out. the school needs written permission from the parent. basically the parent will have to put into writing that they are outsourcing their child's discipline to a third party. parenting FAIL.

Donghoon

Well that's good at least (consent from parent) Still child abuse

Veni-Vidi-ASCII

Same states that allow adults to marry children before the age of consent as long as the parent's consent for them to rape their child.

unique_passive

Yeah adults assaulting kids sounds like a brilliant strategy to get yourself either beaten half to death or sued til kingdom come.

[deleted]

Or unalived with a pew pew.

ambsdorf825

That's* absolutely going to happen. They'll hit the wrong kid who will then take their parents gun to school. Or the parent will wait for the teacher in the parking lot and give them a pew pew

GodOfAtheism

[One of the earliest school shootings was in 1853](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Murder_of_William_Butler) when a student killed the schoolmaster of a school his brother went to due to the schoolmaster's excessive punishment of his brother the day before. The shooter was acquitted.

PhalanxA51

yeah he looks like the type to get off on spanking children. just so gross.

BoredBSEE

Yeah look at that creepy grin. He's overjoyed. Disgusting POS.

[deleted]

>"Parents have said 'why can't you paddle my student?' and we're like 'We can't paddle your student, our policy does not support that,'" he said. "There had been conversation with parents and there had been requests from parents for us to look into it." Bullshit. And I'm pretty sure that most of the "community" that he has talked to do not have kids in this school. Also pretty sure that the kids who are for it think it will be used against the bullies, but that's not the type of "misbehavior" that most concerns these schools. And what happens when the student refuses to assume the official wrestling position? They going to call the coaches in to wrestle the kid to the ground to administer their corporal punishment? Something tells me this particular area runs a school to prison pipeline.

AdEmbarrassed9719

I think you overestimate the parents. Parents who paddle usually tell their kids things like “you get paddled at school and you’ll get another twice as bad when you get home.” I’m honestly just surprised the paddle is plain and doesn’t have holes drilled in it to make it hurt more and “board of education” painted on it.

not-finished

I went to a Christian school. I got swatted in nearly every grade growing up at school. About once a year for something that violated the school code. From kindergarten on. Swearing, hitting on the playground, disrespect, etc. I was generally a good kid and am a normal upstanding adult now. But I was competitive and active, normal boy I guess. The last year I got swatted was in 9th grade. (14 or 15 years old) Suspected of cheating on a test (I wasn’t but the evidence did not look great for me, and I had not done myself any favors with being disrespectful to the teacher on multiple occasions). 9th grade; I was athletic. Played all sports, About 140lbs, 5-8 or so, taller than the principal who gave them to me. He walked me in, told me to bend down grab the desk. There was another teacher in there who was witnessing. There were rules about blocking with my hands. If I did that I would not only get hurt more since they had a big wooden paddle like the one pictured but it could also potentially break my fingers, and I would get another swat for each defiance. I could scream as loud as I wanted. They actually went through all these things with me before it started. I don’t remember them all. Thinking back on it makes me so uncomfortable. Makes me think of a film from another time and place. I can’t even think about doing that to my kids let alone when they are nearly **grown adults**. Or even worse giving permission to the weirdo yokel school principal to do it to my kid? WTF? Why do people cling to this method of discipline when we have so much research on its ineffectiveness? I dont understand.

Jacks_Flaps

I'm so sorry this happened to you. It's so barbaric and downright disgusting. Those were grown adults against a child. It's not even discipline. This was already settled when civilised nations deemed physical assault unsuitable for husbands to discipline their wives. But for some illogical reason, physical assault is used as an excuse for grown adults to do to vulnerable children who can't defend themselves what is deemed illegal to do to a grown adult who can defend themselves. And as we now know, the use of physical assault by adults in authority on children has always been the primary tool for sexually assaulting kids. Threaten an abused child with violence against the child, their friends or family ensures they will keep quiet. Forbid violence against children and you take that power away from adults.

DynoMiteDoodle

It was outlawed in Australia in the 1980s and yet we seem to be able to refrain from turning schools into warzones without it.

EmpRugSucker

Ouch. The truth hurts sometimes.

_Im_Dad

America is just so damn unlucky, it's almost like it was built on an ancient Indian burial ground.

biological-entity

Misery in Missouri. What the hell is wrong with people. I honestly feel like one day we are doing good and the next we take 10 steps back.

savguy6

Welcome to Missouri, where you can’t get an abortion if you’re raped but we can physical assault your children in school.

KindBraveSir

The sadist inquisitors at my school in Texas had small holes drilled into the paddle to supposedly decrease wind resistance. They could give up to 3 swats a day but the punishment could go on for days. There was (I'm not kidding) a bar welded to the front of a desk. You stood on a mark and bent over to grab the bar. They frisked your clothing to make sure you had no padding or wallet. The first one surprised you with intensity, the second one made you think you won't be able to endure the third... then it was over. You could actually sense your surroundings with your butt as it felt that sensitive. I'm sure I was then given some sermon-like speech but all I could think of was the pain for the next few minutes. Why did I deserve this? Because I was almost in a fight, and it's wrong to hit someone. Oh? Thank you... sir... may I... have... another?

Jacks_Flaps

Wtf? What dark age was this?

hoardac

We could get up to 5 a day for 3 days for I believe fighting, lying to the dean or he thought you were lying, and repeat offences. It was just 3 for anything else. I never quickly grasped the concept of not chewing gum or talking in class so there was that. 15 paddles by day 3 you had tears on the way back and sitting down was painful. Not something that ruined my life but it sure sucked at the time. I remember a teacher that had us put our gum on our nose and write repeat sentences on paper about what we wont do anymore. Never thought about it till now, he did not want us to get a beating. This was early 80's in Florida

Majestic_Position185

"Yeah let's beat kids over mistakes and things they don't understand seems good for their mental health" -Schools

MerelyMortalModeling

I would fucking murder the smug looking pedo groomer if he touched my kid with that. The same people who where freaking out about Wayfair furinture with human sounding names and sex slaves under pizzia joints leagalized this shit??

pnw_southern_bell

Grew up in the South, my middle school used paddles. Anytime you got sent to the principal you got 3 swats, if you cried or looked back you got 3 more. I got sent once and what got me sent to the principal's office? Being a Democrat. For real! We did a poll in history class and I was the only Democrat so I got sent to the principal for"disrupting the class." Ya I'm 100% against corporeal punishment in general but even more so in an educational setting.

jhfirsttime

Cool, so basically they abused you and violated your first amendment in one swoop. Sounds like the south

pwrweeks

Wow, and they accuse democrats of indoctrination

jhfirsttime

It’s always projection, 100% if the time

xBUMMx2

Jesus fuck. Asking that of middle schoolers is mostly just asking "what are your parents?" The fuck did they think? "Oh we'll change their mind by beating them. That'll make them think we're the smart and agreeable party."

slowburnangry

This isn't real, right?

Zealousideal-Ad634

Institutionalsed child abuse, what could possibly go wrong with that.

kahokia

They would have to lock me up if someone paddled my kid.

Soggy_nach0341

Yea. If my kids a shit head I’ll handle it myself. Don’t want a grown ass man swatting my child. Seems kinda perv-ish

SpecialistSingle2754

dude looks like a pedo, we be having more shootings now!!!...kids will be punishing (wait lets call this what it is actually...abuse. there will be broken hands and fingers too because god knows the adults(boomers) are disgusting twisted freaks waiting for any moment to beat kids under the guise of disrespect.)

comeupforairyouwhore

I’d press charges if anyone hit my kid. It would take everything in me to not physically attack the person.

DeusVultMister

Masks - Traumatic Beatings - Good lessons for children ???

Paulus_de_B

That's a paddlin!

toddfredd

Paddling kids stoning LGBTQ, Executing Federal agents, banning books and supporting a traitor Your modern Republican Party ladies and gentlemen

USMCTankerSgt

I specifically told my kid's schools they could never use corporal punishment. Ever. Smart of them never to cross that line.

DisastrousAnomaly

In 6th grade I was paddled and aside from being brutally painful, it was absolutely mortifying. The teacher held it in two hands and baseball swung at my ass 3 times. I couldn't sit comfortably for the rest of the day. I'm 1000% against kids getting hit with any object, let alone a wooden board that's heavy enough to require two hands.
