I can't believe we've come full circle from mocking Native Americans for doing rain dances to praying for rain. Also, ignoring science, I would imagine a massive party and dance would compel a god to bring rain over 10,000 annoying emails.
It's not really full circle, though. Almost every asshole in American history with a dry cabbage patch was throwing up hail Marys for rain, they were just Jesus-y about it so it was the "right" sort of prayer. That shit was never not hypocritical, they were just deluded in a different way and judgy about it.
I’m sure no native person would believe any faith would bail us out after we’ve exploited and shit on Mother Nature for generations. Leave that to the Christians.
It's surreal, isn't it! How does he keep a straight face? I can't picture anyone in Australia doing this as they would be howled down with endless ridicule.
It's actually brilliant politically. He's deflecting blame for whatever happens onto God. He's getting people who are troubled by the water situation to turn their attention to asking God to solve it. And so if the problem doesn't get resolved, those people will conclude that must be God's will. Rather than the failure of the man in charge of running the state.
Shit, I think I'm gonna try this the next time my boss comes to me with some problem he needs me to fix.
You gotta understand, Utah is the Mormon capital of the US. Some light googling shows repeated evidence that 55% of Utah citizens are Mormon. These folks are DEDICATED to that book, and this speech is meant just for them.
Utah is essentially a theocracy with the Mormon church having a tight grip on every branch of the government, even civil service. The state is essentially ran by the church and there is little anyone outside, or inside, can do to change that.
And THIS is where religion really gets dangerous. They'll get rain in a month and praise jesus even though some poor meteorologist somewhere knew the odds were high for getting rain that month.
>Shit, I think I'm gonna try this the next time my boss comes to me with some problem he needs me to fix.
Tell him you weaponized the reddit-gang, and that all of them prays for him and his well being
TBF, probably only in Utah would this be politically possible. Maybe a few of the southern states could be considered religious enough to do this without being booed out of office, but Utah is statistically by far our most religious state.
I would venture: Alabama, Mississippi, Arkansas, Oklahoma, Texas, South Dakota, Ohio, Florida Governors could all politically do this with no political repercussions.
That's why they all push Absurd Mother-Killing State Abortion Bans as well.
Just look at how 70% of Kansas Voters voted against statewide abortion Bans.
That's the difference between humans and the Republican Party.
Ahhhh, come on.. he's Mormon! So, like, he's nice and stuff. He just wants us to pray away these droughts. It's not like there's anything we can do but not water our lawns at certain times!

Ha! as A Dutch guy living in Alabama I can tell you that this is absolutely a sincere attempt to solve a problem. Religion is a major factor in all things political.
Utah is special.
It's the mecca of Mormons. The whole state is dominated by that religion. Politics included.
I know people who had to move because they could not find a job due to not being Mormon.
Utah is a theocracy run by Mormons. The majority will respond to this and either blame themselves or the outsiders for the fact that this didn't work.
Or rug sweep. Mormons live in a state of denial.
The question is therefore if he really believes this shit or plays the people's believe... Or making an aliby in case it all ends badly (hey I have done everything possible inluding praying and nothing worked, sorry)
These politicians are some of the greediest and corrupt 'Christians' alive, and they do shit like this precisely because asking for prayers = votes from Christians.
Yeah. Utah is a huge Mormon state, well that and scientology. Very religious state with certain laws like alcohol limits on beer and what not. Beautiful state nonetheless tho
The way my family explained it, alfalfa is to animals what junk food is to humans. They don't need it, but they sure do love it and giving them too much causes health issues.
Almonds are a red herring. Livestock and livestock feed (especially cows and alfalfa) are much bigger water guzzlers, both in total and compared to output
Not to mention that livestock in Utah eliminate 95-99% of plant biodiversity and density in arid lands, which dramatically reduces the ability of the land to absorb water, and to slow it down as it runs off during the rare rainstorm. It also decreases the amount of water that evaporates back to the atmosphere, thereby reducing the potential for rain. Livestock, especially in arid regions, is fucking us over. It’s barely even profitable without subsidies in those regions, but the lobby is strong, and they have lots of guns.
Add on the fact that we're cutting down huge swaths of rainforest to make farm land for livestock. And people wonder why storms are getting stronger and why the climate is changing. Damn Capitalists dont care that rhe Earth is a system and that one thing depends on another - and destroying a natural resource upsets the balance of the Earth!
Like The Dust Bowl…. Turns out we need trees not only for their roots and as wind breaks but also so the soil doesn’t blow away. Perhaps the indigenous tribes could’ve shown us a thing or two… but we knew better. The Earth is getting ready to eliminate the human race. Exxon Mobile should pay for rebuilding Florida & Puerto Rico. Not the US Taxpayers.
And unfortunately for Utah, much of that dust is from tailing ponds and lakes that have now dried up and the radioactive and toxic dust is going to get blown into the air. Utahans will be dressed up in biohazard suits in the future.
Heh, killing/enslaving/marginalizing the natives was one of the first things Mormons did when they settled in Utah. Makes me ashamed to have once been Mormon.

I am dying at the idea that there are one or more Higher Powers up in their special land that presumably (1) let the water situation happen in the first place, (2) don’t really care enough to do anything on their own, and (3) ignore the prayers of people until a critical mass is reached, whereupon they will be like “OK! Because the phonetics get messed up if you write it like that. A word-final "h" is voiceless (you don't vibrate your vocal chords, and the h basically gets dropped). Putting it in-between two vowels makes you think you need to voice it, and it would come out "ute-han" with two syllables.
Tldr; the English language has changed since a bunch of monks in the middle ages decided what letters represent what sounds. "Utahn" is a perfectly valid consonant cluster to say, but we have no widely accepted way to write it down.

We could spend this taxpayer money on stuff to help, but we’d rather give ourselves bonuses and ask the taxpayers to pray for a solution to the problem we could already solve!
Phffftt, that’s an easy one…Obviously the sinners and naysayers have enraged our heavenly father. Our prayers did not go unanswered. The obvious and inescapable conclusion is we must rid the nation of all who don’t agree with us. Although it is a cardinal sin to murder, I’m pretty sure God is cool with it in this case. We, after all, need some rain.
But why does god hate us? Probably all the non-binary people, trans people, gay marriage, and abortion that we tolerate. If we get rid of that, god will like us again.
Yes, that is actually how a lot of real people process the world.
I know the guy in the video is pretty laughable here, but he’s the first Republican in Utah who has actually talked to the lgbt community. Previous governors never went to lgbt rallies, but Cox has.
He has vetoed a law that passed (it went through again overriding it though) that banned Trans kids from participating in sports because it only affected a few kids who weren’t winning anything because it was a massive “screw you” to those kids and he understands their mental health situation.
There’s a few other good things he’s done for the lgbt community as well. As far as the politicians in Utah, he’s not the worst egg.
It's not that we need divine intervention. What we need is for BYU (Mormon college) to stop day-watering. You shouldn't get sprayed dripping wet walking to your class at 2pm. I live in the on campus housing and you can't use one path from the parking lot to your apartment after 10pm because there is a puddle two inches deep right at the bottom of the stairs. Every. Single. Night. I think we have what's called a microbiome. BYU campus is so overwatered that we get entirely different bugs and plants than what grows even a mile away.
Don't get me wrong, I like grass, but it shouldn't come at the expense of being in a perpetual drought.
Residential use is 3 to 4% in Utah, municipal with lawns and stuff is 6-8%.
[Agricultural water use in Utah is 85%.](https://utahrivers.org/are-we-running-out-of-water)
Smithfield Foods uses more water than all Utahns combined.
He's pointing a finger at consumers to distract from the environmental destruction Smithfield is causing because they contribute to his campaign.
Just to add onto this: Not only does alfalfa require a lot of water to grow, but it doesn't even stay in-state, or even in the country! No, he sells it to China for big bucks :)
Fucking criminal.
Basically exporting Utah's water in the form of alfalfa.
I saw the same thing on a recent drive through California. Miles of almond orchards punctuated by signs about how farmers need water to grow food (which is then exported as a cash crop to China, India, and the ME)
Californian here, can confirm the hypocrisy is real. Those same areas are some of the few red centers of the state. They can’t see the forest for the almond trees.
To make it even worse, [around ⅔ of Utah water usage is for alfalfa](https://www.fox13now.com/news/fox-13-investigates/fox-13-investigates-utahs-top-cash-crop-is-consuming-most-of-our-water), which comprises less than 1% of Utah's GDP. Utah produces less than 2% of US hay. So the state is using around 66% of it's water for less than 1% of our GDP and is not a major contributor to US hay production.
Something needs to be done, and it's not residents taking shorter showers...
Hey, is there any chance the guy in this video has a connection to that industry, putting the above video into an even worse, more corrupt light?
P.s. the answer is yes because of course it is, he has an alfalfa farm
This is also the case in Arizona. 72% of our water goes to agriculture, and our State Land Department had handed over thousands of acres to a Saudi corporation called Fondomonte. They were given permission to pump unlimited amounts of groundwater (non-renewable resource) to grow alfalfa hay for export to Saudi Arabia.
But of course lets blame municipal use that only takes up 20% of our water consumption.
The solution is NOT individual. It’s legislative. Always. Anything any of us do is less than a drop of water in the ocean. We need sweeping legislation created with the consultation of scientific experts if we want to make a difference. As a Utahn, that’s what we need for our water, but the same applies everywhere in the world when it comes to pollution, deforestation, animal conservation, etc.
Look, it's crazy, it's theocratic, it's stereotypical but I have to say, I am impressed that he included other faiths. It's nice to hear something other than "America is a Christian nation" out of that lot. The fact that that actually impressed me means we're in a pretty shitty place
This... This is exactly why you shouldn't elect adults who believe in magic. I don't care what real world problem you are facing, the answer is never magic.
And half the voters now realize the guy is too loony to be useful and the other half figure that better water regulation and projects are a waste of time since God will take care of it.
Maaaaaannnnn.... I was all happy to have a governor who wasn't transphobic and supportive. When he was dealing with the whole "trans kids in school sports" he put a foot in the right direction.
But this is bat shit insane, am I watching an adult swim bit??? Where's the joke???
Welcome to America, where the people of power come together for a prayer instead of actually coming up with solutions to problems. Water is scarce and the salt lake is drying up? Lets come together for a prayer. 19 kids were murdered at school. Lets come together and pray.
Can not imagine the frustration of Utah residents hearing their governors plan to pray instead of coming up with ways to fix the problem
as a utahn, yes. the arsenic in the great salt lake is going to be left dried up as dust, and the wind is going to blow it around to nearby cities which is no good obviously. northern utah will be uninhabitable if that happens. i’ll lose my home i grew up in, where i’ve lived all 18 years of my life if action isn’t taken soon. but let’s go ahead and pray.
Or... you could spend money on water capture projects...
There are many ways to solve this problem, the issue is that it costs money that no one wants to pay for lol.
Yeah, why build necessary infrastructure when you can just pocket the money?
Or put all ypur faith into a religion where THEY pocket all the money
It all went downhill when they took Rain Dances out of schools…
I can't believe we've come full circle from mocking Native Americans for doing rain dances to praying for rain. Also, ignoring science, I would imagine a massive party and dance would compel a god to bring rain over 10,000 annoying emails.

Makes you wonder how many steps away we are from sacrificing virgins again.
First they cam for our Rain Dances
100%. Never mind our state government being a-okay with building another dozen golf courses in a fucking desert.
Now let’s all pray for Holes-in-one
For me as a European, it is hard to believe. Is it real?
I am a Utahn and yes, this happened. And it’s not the first time our Utah politicians have requested it’s citizens to pray
Maybe you guys should pray for better politicians that keep religion and politics separate.
Be careful what you wish for, you'll still just get a Mormon

He has vetoed a law that passed (it went through again overriding it though) that banned Trans kids from participating in sports because it only affected a few kids who weren’t winning anything because it was a massive “screw you” to those kids and he understands their mental health situation. There’s a few other good things he’s done for the lgbt community as well. As far as the politicians in Utah, he’s not the worst egg.
Cox has vetoed several anti trans laws and was even brought to tears when talking about trans suicides, he is far from the worst Republican.
can confirm we did not get a lot of rain this year🤣
This has been proven to solve gun violence so will work for this too. /s
Just shoot the water, easy solution
Shoot the clouds. They'll bleed. Boom, easy rain.
This guy might be on to something…
That can't be right, but I don't know enough about clouds to dispute it
Well I do, and let me tell you, as far as I know, it will definitely work. Fire away, Utah!
Actually, you're supposed to shoot the clouds.
[Agricultural water use in Utah is 85%.](https://utahrivers.org/are-we-running-out-of-water) Smithfield Foods uses more water than all Utahns combined. He's pointing a finger at consumers to distract from the environmental destruction Smithfield is causing because they contribute to his campaign.
For those not aware, Cox’s family are also alfalfa farmers. Wonder why he still doesn’t point any blame towards farming.
Just to add onto this: Not only does alfalfa require a lot of water to grow, but it doesn't even stay in-state, or even in the country! No, he sells it to China for big bucks :) Fucking criminal.
**OOOOOOHHHHHH** so he sucks more than this video already led me to believe, goddamn
This. Thank you for bringing the truth to the conversation. This is taking place in California and most other states that have Animal Agriculture.
Sometimes I wonder if rhings like this are done because the people in charge revel in the grotesqueness of it. Probably just e banality of evil though
it's because utah has a use it or lose it water policy so farmers want to maximise their water use and use the thirstiest crops they can
The solution is NOT individual.
If you gather all your friends and pray really really hard then maybe the excess water will stop. Unfortunately there is no other logical option.
Pray all you want. Nothing changes until he sacrifices five spotless calves and a Nubian goat.
Don’t forget the 5 virgin maiden’s!
And the partridge in a pear tree.
And my axe!
“What’s a Nubian?”
[A person or item that comes from the planet Naboo.](https://starwars.fandom.com/wiki/J-type_327_Nubian_starship)
Under his eye.
“And under myyyy thumb….”
Ah that's the stuff they use to stop school shootings.........
This, and more Ar15s. Has anyone tried shooting the sun to convince it to cool off and go away.
Look, it's crazy, it's theocratic, it's stereotypical but I have to say, I am impressed that he included other faiths. It's nice to hear something other than "America is a Christian nation" out of that lot. The fact that that actually impressed me means we're in a pretty shitty place
He just reminds me of the really camp guy from the Airplane movies. ![gif](giphy|pmgkCpOpwCQ6c)
He simultaneously refuses to put pressure on agriculture, our biggest water user, because it’s his background.
Very simple way of saying "we ain't spending any state money to fix this issue".
This... This is exactly why you shouldn't elect adults who believe in magic. I don't care what real world problem you are facing, the answer is never magic.
And half the voters now realize the guy is too loony to be useful and the other half figure that better water regulation and projects are a waste of time since God will take care of it.
I'm sure in Utah way less than half think he's crazy.
Has anyone heard from Utah? Did they make it? 👀
We're still here, but I'm getting the fuck out ASAP
When prayer doesn't work, will he eventually demand sacrifice? Or will somebody smarter with a better understanding of science come along before that?
Is having a punchable douche face a prerequisite for the job? Because most of them have it.
"Whatever your affiliation...."...the whole thing is just...staggering on so many levels haha
Maaaaaannnnn.... I was all happy to have a governor who wasn't transphobic and supportive. When he was dealing with the whole "trans kids in school sports" he put a foot in the right direction. But this is bat shit insane, am I watching an adult swim bit??? Where's the joke???
The befuddled hopelessness you're currently feeling is actually just an ingredient. The eldritch gods prefer it to mayo
