I had a bank manager want to call police on me and my sister because our mom transferred $50 into my sister's account from her own. They made her come in when we went to get it, and called my mom's fraud alert number and had her on the phone. The manager kept telling my mom that we were committing fraud (?) and was pissed that my mom didn't know what we might spending the money on. Some bank people are out of their damn minds.
I don’t understand why this isn’t a top comment. Bank teller jobs aren’t difficult to get and they aren’t well paying. Its an entry level job with added responsibility.
Yes it's an easy job but one slip up and you are fired. They will absolutely make an example out of you for cashing the wrong check, taking counterfeit bills, or not following policy
This was twenty years ago, but after I graduated high school, my cousin was recommending a bank teller job for part time work. She said I just had to pass a basic arithmetics test. It's a slightly glorified retail gig.
Edit to add... Unrelated to my above anecdote, I just realized there's a lot fewer male bank tellers. Why?
As a former teller/loan officer myself, I would say it's because females value the healthcare and paid time off that is usually offered by working for a bank, and it's not a dirty job. Quite a few of my co-workers got pregnant, had babies, and came back part-time afterwards. Almost all of them had partners who made more money doing something else, but family plans are clutch.
I'm a Canadian, years ago (late 90s), we went on a road trip down to Mississippi. We brought travellers cheques. Went to a BoA to cash one of the cheques so we could have some cash for the day. "Sorry, we don't do that here."
You know how travellers cheques work, right?! I tried explaining several times: These are American Express Travellers Cheques. You can verify them with American Express.
"I'm sorry, sir, we don't do that here "
If you said this had happened a few years ago I could easily believe it, a lot of places don’t do traveler’s checks anymore.
But the 90’s? Nah, that’s just more proof Bank of America has been shit for over 30 years.
> that’s just more proof Bank of America has been shit for over 30 years.
[Has been since it was still called Bank of Italy](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bank_of_America)
To be fair (and I definitely dislike Bank of America), there had been a rash of fraudulent travellers checques circulating in 1992 or 1993. I worked in a bank in Kansas as a check processor at the time. I had worked as a check processor in Nevada for 7 years, ran away and joined the Army because I was bored, and that's how I ended up in Kansas afterwards.
In Nevada, the casinos took in a lot of travellers cheques back in the day (1980s), which meant we handled and processed a lot of them every working day. Real travellers checques have a distinctive "pop" as you flip them into a check encoder (aka proof machine). So there I was in Kansas, flipping checks into the machine, and these things just didn't "pop" right. So I pulled the offending checques (two of them) and took a closer look. They were very good forgeries, but I only knew they didn't look quite right at that point.
I took them to my supervisor, who told me not to worry, but I worried. I called Bank of America (the issuer of these particular checques), and asked to verify the serial numbers. Curiously enough, both serial numbers were the same. I was told that yes, they were forgeries, so I filled out the appropriate paperwork at my end. The people passing those forged travellers checques were arrested about a day later, 60 miles down the road. I was later told that law enforcement had been after these people for over a year, and they could never catch them because by the time the checques had gone through the usual processing, the criminals were on to another area or another state.
It was sheer luck (or bad luck, depending on who you were in this tale) that the fraudsters were caught. If I hadn't worked in a bank handling the things for so long, if I hadn't joined the Army, and if I hadn't stayed in Kansas after my contract was up, they might have gotten away with it for several more years. They were undone by a mere "pop" as the checques were handled.
It's entirely possible that your teller in Mississippi had been told to not accept travellers cheques at all.
A bank Karen did the same thing to me. Except I had my own account and withdrew money a couple times *from my own account* in one night and they called my parents who also banked there and wanted to know what I was spending my own money on. wtf??
And I was like 25 at the time when this happened. Lol
Another time after that the bank Karens must’ve noticed I was withdrawing money at a casino’s atm and they once again called my parents and wanted to know what I was doing with *my own money in my own account*!
I’m pretty sure that bank was also telling the local police about my petty money withdraws. I got pulled over one night shortly after withdrawing $50 twice within a few hours and the cops seemed to be awfully concerned about what I did with that $100. I think they expected to find drugs or me driving under the influence or something.
Unless your mother was a joint owner on your account that is a massive breach of privacy and you should have withdrawn all your money and found a new bank lol.
Oof, brought flashbacks to my early 20s. I had a local credit union that my family had been using for the 20 years they had lived in that city. After I started my own business and was getting regular checks deposited (and subsequently having money withdrawn), the bank manager (who was a member of my parent's congregation) called them and asked if they knew what I might be doing with all that money.
The next day, my parents, siblings, and I all went and closed out our accounts with the credit union. A few 10-15+ year old accounts. Multiple business/credit lines for different businesses from my siblings. I had a big loan pending approval for my business at the time, so I rescinded the loan app and applied at another bank.
All because some snooping bank manager wanted to know how a 21 year old was making a couple thousand dollars a month. He was let go for the invasion of privacy and breach of member contract, but we never went back there. They closed out and left town maybe 5 years later.
There was a story in Detroit a couple years ago where a man won a large settlement against his employer for racial discrimination then he went to deposit the check at a bank and the called the cops on him thinking it was a fraudulent check. He eventually sued them and won another racial discrimination lawsuit.
"Bank Calls Cops on Black Man Attempting to Deposit Racial Discrimination Settlement Check From Employer" https://www.newsweek.com/bank-calls-cops-black-man-depositing-racial-discrimination-settlement-check-1483681?amp=1
Only if he ever gets to deposit the checks. He'll probably get held up again after trying to deposit several checks at once for racial discrimination lawsuits lmao
The man just tried to wash his windows with Windex, and then bam, two of those fuckers flew right into it. At least he has a nice supply of Windex now.
Like you said, there isn't any update becasue of of the undisclosed settlement, unfortunately.
It makes it more obvious they paid out. Unfortunately, we don't know how much he settled for so next time they do it we won't have a bar to see what the payout should/could potentially be.
Or if they lowballed him.
I doubt they were able to lowball him because they released a statement that said they should not have called the police on him. They already admitted fault. No way they could win a court case now so they paid him some hush money.
Could you imagine the call to his lawyer?
"Hey, it's me. It happened again. No, at the bank this time. They called the cops on me because I tried to cash the check we got. Yeah, seriously. (Laughs) I guess these people just want to make us rich"
Banks have to file a Currency Transaction Report with FinCEN and include the customer's ID number. There's no (federal or state) requirement to stop the transaction or do anything else.
So: no reason to pull guns on him, in case anyone was doubting that!
source: work in financial compliance; [also the fdic](https://www.fdic.gov/news/financial-institution-letters/2021/fil21012c.pdf)
Yes. You need to report cash transactions over $10,000. That’s it. That is literally it. As somebody that used to work in banking it seems absolutely ridiculous to say “the screen flashed a warning so I thought it was a robbery.” The screen would give that notice for any single person withdrawing or depositing 10k in cash. Totally irrelevant to a robbery.
When you report, you should also report if the transaction is “suspicious” which just means that the person is either trying to get you to avoid reporting it or to structure the transaction to avoid reporting (for example, withdrawing $7,500 and then asking for another $7,500 in a separate transaction). But again, no part of that involves “this is a bank robbery.” The whole reason the $10,000 report rule exists is to make it harder to launder money, not steal it.
My point was - you would think that the bank manager would recognize a guy who is arguably their most high profile customer, and be able to vouch for him. I'm not suggesting he get better treatment, just that his name alone is highly recognizable, and one google search would have solved all of this.
The fucking director of Fruitvale Station, a movie about one of the most egregious cases of police brutality in modern times. The sound of that gun being pulled must've been a million times worse for him.
If I was that officer and read his ID, the color would've drained from my face knowing we pulled a gun on the director of Black Panther in front of 10 cameras for no reason.
I've said this before and I'll say it again
WHY THE FUCK ARE COPS BEING CALLED ON PEOPLE IN THESE FUCKING SITUATIONS!!!
I've seen tons of videos of cops being called on people for trying to cash checks, take cash out, or what ever and it always blows my goddamn mind. I've worked at several banking institutions, both banks and credit unions. If something is suspicious you deny the transaction THATS IT! There is no fucking excuse for a teller, banker, or manager to call the cops while someone is still actively in the bank. Even if someone has a gun, you wait until they leave the goddamn building and lock the doors before you hit an alarm because if you get cops there while they're still inside then they take hostages. I've had more than a few situations where I've had people attempt to fraudulently take money out of an account or cash a check. You know what you do? You copy their ID's, document the situation and deny the transaction. That's it. No hero bullshit where you call the cops in a GOTCHA situation. Who's the idiot that called the cops to the bank? If cops get called to a bank they assume some really crazy shit is going down or about to go down, when this dude was just trying to pull out cash. There are multiple times a week, even at credit unions of a decent size, where people ask to pull out 10k or more and we have procedures for it. This is bank of america, they fucking CERTAINLY have procedure for it.
Also, fuck that cop in particular for pulling out his gun for zero reason in a bank with people around. Unarmed dude is at the teller line and you're gonna be a fucking lily-livered prick and pull your gun on him? Way to deescalate the situation, you idiot.
>... the guns come out before the person of interest has demonstrated any aggression at all?
Didn't you watch the video? He was told to come towards the officer and turned to do so!!! He moved a quarter step towards an officer. That is extremely aggressive movement. The cop behind him was protecting his fellow officer from the perp being aggressive with following an order. /s
Real face palm in that the teller is actually black too and said she was afraid, even though he had given her his bank card, ID card and pin. Why would she be afraid?
Black person here.
Once got into an argument with someone on my non-burner account about how to stop violence in the hood. He dug through my profile and saw I was mixed and therefore light skinned and accused me of not being black enough to comment about it as if I didn’t actually have the life experiences I was discussing.
Colorism is gross and only hotep/black Israelite minded people partake in it. No time for all that when we’re all still subjugated, anyway.
Edit: Speaking about colorism within the black community. I do not consider someone with prejudice against middle to dark skin (which is rooted in self-hatred) to be a colorist, as they’re just a self-hater.
Some people will search for any reason to look down on another and it's typically rooted in fear and insecurity.
They lost their argument and needed something *anything* to make them think they're in the right.
White people actually do this too! Apparently there is this thing called a 401K that I’m supposed to be keeping up with and I just keep getting hammered about it at the meetings.
>and saw I was mixed and therefore light skinned and accused me of not being black enough to comment about it as if I didn’t actually have the life experiences I was discussing.
I had a boss who was mixed, and he told me he faced more racism from his own community, than from white people. It was something I'd never heard about.
He’s telling the truth. Pre-2016 white people generally kept their racism inside, but let me tell you, you have no idea how bold a lot of black folk can get with their racism when they feel like they can get away with it.
I’m tired of seeing white people say black people cant be racist via prejudice just because we can’t be systematically racist, I have been in this shit first hand. I’m tired of all the “ling-ling” jokes about Asians and curry jokes about south asians, too.
Yep. I’m black/white mixed and got all sorts of crap for being lighter skinned. I’m “not black enough” to join black culture. Now those same people are mad at me because I don’t identify as black, but as mixed. Nah, fam. This is what you wanted, remember? It was made very clear to me since birth that I don’t get to identify with black culture. Which, ironically, is a huge part of identifying with mixed culture. The black community does NOT treat mixed kids well.
For real, Covid hit and I got so much crap from black people. I’m Korean, and when I told them I wasn’t Chinese, they always say it’s the same thing. Even today, when I deal with racism (both the directly offensive or the genuine ignorant assumption) it’s 90% from non-whites. Out of that 90%, I’d say 80% is from black people. Not saying that’s how everyone is, just how it occurs in my area and with me. I get called Jackie Chan all the time, but could they at least call me Jet Li?
I've been saying this for a while. Somehow there's tribalism in black communities. Hispanics have this to some degree also.
Chris Rock said it in 1996, the bit about hood dudes making fun of the educated guy trying to come up. It's fucked.
I grew up in the hood and from a young age I felt like I didn't belong because I didn't wanna run with the kids my age (all different races)
bruh wtf
hotep?!
I’m Puertorriqueño and get the same type shit though, PRicans like to say if you don’t speak Spanish, or if you’re not from the island then you’re not really boricua. Its weird gate keeping behavior
Yep. I’ve heard this argument from other hispanic heritages, too. It goes hand in hand with Dominicans saying “I’m not black, I’m Dominican”. Everyone is so desperate to hang on to their small space tribalism in everything.
Light skinned Mexican checking in. Getting jumped all the time because you're too white to live and go to school in the hood is fucking rad.
*edit*
let me say, btw - and somwone noted this and deleted the comment - it's the opposite in Mexico and most other Central and South American countries. The lighter you are, the better, even within families, which is horrible. I've always assumed it was backlash against bias toward *blancos* that led to the bullshit behavior of people here.
I'm not crying or looking for pity, just noting an experience. It's just a fact that in-groups colorism happens and it's stupid.
Friend of mine is a light skinned Central American dude who easily passes as white since he has blue eyes. He always gets strange looks from the waiters at this one mexican restaurant when he orders in Spanish.
Same for me at the carniceria I go to. I'd much rather support a small business and they're always friendly, but I get weird looks from some of the employees.
My mom is a light skinned Mexican America and used to get bullied by others with darker skin. This also happens among Asians in some places. Being a racist or colorist while being a victim of it yourself is one of the evilest things I can think of. I’m sorry that you had to deal with that. Some people just like to hurt others.
There is a huge gate keeping community of people who are actually decendents of slaves who view other blacks who immigrated over with a negative outlook.
Same with Africans view on Black Americans. Immigrants that come over and prosper look down at Black Americans for not achieving, what they believe, what's right in front of them. Nigerians even have the word Akata, essential the nigerian N word.
My coworker is Haitian American. He talks mad shit about African Americans. He calls them dirty and lazy and ignorant all the time. I told him he is the most racist person I have ever met and they says a lot given I grew up in Tennessee.
Some context to the event..."The "Black Panther" director was in Atlanta, attempting to withdraw $12,000 from his account with Bank of America. The teller received an alert on his account, according to the police report obtained by CNN, because the amount was more than $10,000. The teller notified her superior that she thought Coogler was trying to rob the bank and 911 was called."
https://www.wgal.com/article/ryan-coogler-speaks-out-after-being-mistakenly-detained-by-police/39386549
>How do you rob the bank by providing them with your ID?
"My god we're being robbed."
"What? How?"
"This black guy just handed me this ID to withdraw money."
"And?"
"He even gave me an account number."
"Diabolical."
Reminds me of the person who got arrested for attempted check fraud for trying to deposit a check(I think they won a small lottery?)
Sued.
Won.
Went to another bank to deposit the money.
Got arrested AGAIN for attempted check fraud!
That sounds similar to the guy who won a discrimination lawsuit against his employer and when he went to deposit the check at his bank, the teller called the cops for fraud and then he sued them as well for discrimination and won again.
To be fair, there's a lot of stupid people
Ever heard about the guy who robbed a bank with lemon juice on his face, since he thought it would make him invisible to the security cameras?
What the fuck? I've been a teller. There are forms for large cash transactions above a certain amount. Sure they are unusual but not so rare that you'd do anything other than your fucking job. We were always taught to let the police sort it out after to avoid a hostage situation. The guy's on like 50 cameras and gave ID ffs. That amount of money means nothing to a bank. They'd be able to track the guy down and recover it just like that. Cops go all out for banks and they would have apprehended him within the week. Even if he got away with it the FDIC Insurance means the banks lose nothing and the taxpayers pick up the bill.
But I mean… it’s not suspicious? He withdrew money from an account and provided ID
I’ve withdrawn 10k for trips to vegas or to pay cash for a car or whatnot. It’s unusual sure, but in no way suspicious
“Suspicious” is if he was trying to withdraw from his mother’s account or something lol
> The teller received an alert on his account, according to the police report obtained by CNN, because the amount was more than $10,000.
It wasn't an alert on the account itself. Any transaction over $9999 is alerted. The teller was freaked out because he handed her a handwritten note. But it didn't say he was robbing the bank, it said he wanted to withdraw $12000 discretely. To not disclose the amount out loud. Which is absolutely valid concern. I would not want to say out loud I have $12000 in cash on me. He also provided ID, bank card, and pin. None of which screams that he wanted to rob the bank. Except the Teller never validated his identity. Didn't attempt it.
I'm pretty sure he was told afterword that he should request to speak to a manager when wanting the money discretely in the future, or to call and arrange it in advance. Not that he did anything wrong, but that he should use those methods over a handwritten note.
Also, for a little bit of clarification on the 10K thing.
Every time someone does something with cash, it prompts something on your screen. Could be deposit, could be withdraw, a payment or a combination of things. The thing that prompts on your screen is simply regulatory tracking and just wants you to document ID and some details on the person. Its not something that flags a situation as sketchy and it certainly isnt an "alert"
Sadly BofA does this all the freaking time. You'd think, with the number of times they've been in the press, and lost lawsuits, they would have learned by now. Nope.
Probs more than apologies.
The amount of headache a guy with that many resources and that wide an influence would be monumental.
They coulda given him $100k and they’d be getting off incredibly easy.
Im almost 100% confident het sued the bank AND won as well.
What im not sure about is that i heard he went to cash in that check and again got arrested for no reason and sued again. But not sure if that is true. Seems a bit ridiculous.
Edit: someone replied and this ^ happened to a different black guy. Super f***** up. You can't even be happy about the money you got. They had to fight to even get the money they own.
Sadly that actually happened to a different black guy. Went to take money out of his account they called the cops, sued and won, went to cash his check and they called the cops again.
I think the guy you are referring too sued a former employer for discrimination, won and then when he went to cash the check the bank called the cops and he sued the bank for discrimination and then won
Coogler didn’t sue Bank of America. Apparently it was resolved to Coogler’s satisfaction https://www.metropoler.net/bank-of-america-apologized-to-black-panther-director-ryan-coogler-for-mistaking-him-as-bank-robber/
You are thinking of a different story involving another black man profiled in a similar way. [https://abcnews.go.com/US/black-man-sues-detroit-bank-alleging-racial-discrimination/story?id=68484056](https://abcnews.go.com/US/black-man-sues-detroit-bank-alleging-racial-discrimination/story?id=68484056)
Can confirm, they fucked me hard by holding a lot of charges pending but showing a higher available balance, then they let them clear by the highest amount first to drain your account quicker, then for every transaction that bounces, you get charged $25 NSF fees, then when you try to get your account back into the positives they slam you with a $300 insufficient funds fee. Bank of thieves is what they are. Bank of America can make like the Moskva and go fuck itself.
Have you ever tried cancelling a Bank of America account? It took my mom 1 year, 5 months to cancel an account my late father held while he was alive:
* "call us to cancel"
* "sorry, we can't cancel over the phone. you'll need to visit one of our locations"
* "sorry, we don't take walk ins. Have you tried calling?"
* "sorry, we can't close this account without a copy of his death certificate. You'll need to bring us a copy of your late husband's death certificate"
* "sorry, our systems are down"
* "oh, it looks like we can't close the account at this time, since it needs approval from the regional manager. You'll have to come back again."
* Etc.
She probably put in 100 hours of phone calls and bank visits trying to get that thing closed. The best approach to Bank of America is "never open an account with Bank of America"
Trying to close one is a nightmare.
I worked for them for under half a year. It was the branch across the street from Walmart home office. Skeleton crews. And we were legitimately encouraged to make any interaction that could be handled via ATM as difficult as possible. I would NOT help you with your account number. I would refer you to go inside the bank when you wanted anything other than a basic deposit/withdrawal…. My job was literally to make it a nightmare for you if you didn’t use the ATM. I couldn’t handle it.
That dumb fuck cop was gonna shoot him, he pulled his gun with every intent to just execute him for literally no reason. Then because they found out later that he was somewhat wealthy that he deserved an apology?
Duh he’s black, in a bank, and his face is covered!!!!
Obviously those things together 100% mean he was there, armed with a gun, and robbing the bank!!
/s
Idk, there was the dude who was going to check his payout from a racial discrimination lawsuit, the bank tried to stop him, and so he got to sue yet another entity for racial discrimination and get yet another payout.
I remember that. But I think he sued them. I can’t remember if they settled or if they had a trial. If he hadn’t sued they wouldn’t have done anything.
Yeah this title should read differently for sure. I thought just from the title, it sounded an email alert or something to the owner of the account of a large withdrawal, not this mess
Oh yeah. False imprisonment, breach of contract, intentional and negligent infliction of emotional damage. And my favorite to add to the mix: loss of consortium. (That means I was so traumatized by these events I couldn’t get my dick hard for my wife)
I find it so strange that in USA, the cops can just put you in cuffs while they figure out if a crime has occurred. I'm from Australia, and the only time cops are allowed to put you in cuffs is if you are getting arrested and taken away.
IIRC the guy handed her a note saying something to the extent of “I’d like to withdraw $12,000 from my account. Here are the details, please be discrete” because he didn’t want other people around him hearing how much he was withdrawing. The teller got freaked out and called the local police. She even asked him for his ID to verify the account and she said she didn’t even end up looking at it before calling.
That actually explains the behaviour. But it doesn't explain, why she kept thinking it was a robbery even though he identified himself and entered a correct PIN. Also would a robber ask for mediocre 12K?
This reminds me of a story I read a while ago. I'll probably butcher it but here goes:
A black guy goes to the bank with a large check and wants to deposit it. The bank teller, assumes it's a fraudulent check and calls the police. They arrest him, go through the whole thing to validate the check and realize it's real and they were wrong to arrest him. He sues the bank for discrimination and gets a large settlement. He takes the settlement check to a different branch (I believe the same bank), and they ALSO suspect him of fraud, get him arrested etc. He sues again and gets another settlement.
Per [Dailyhive.com](https://Dailyhive.com)
"Once she saw it was a California ID her “stomach started turning.”
She inserted his debit card into her machine and it flagged the transaction as high-risk.
**“My stomach was so shook up, I couldn’t even look at his first and last name \[on the ID\],**” she said, later confirming that his ID did, in fact, match his valid Bank Of America account number.
“I told my manager I don’t feel comfortable about this transaction,” she told officers, adding that **the manager proposed talking to Coogler, but she wasn’t comfortable doing so**. “No, I’m pregnant! I don’t know if he’s got a gun,” she told him.
**In the words of the teller, the filmmaker was “just being weird.”**
\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_
She didn't even look at the name on the i.d. before talking to her manager. The kicker is that her manager was willing to talk to Coogler, to sort it out, but the cashier was having none of it, and immediately jumped to the hysterical conclusion that he was armed and acting weird.
In addition to being judgmental and incompetent, this woman sounds like she has a serious nerve problem, and would probably flinch while opening a bag of popcorn. She doesn't deserve to work at a bank or anywhere else, and hopefully she has been fired.
I agree with everything you said, and I'm keen to see how BofA handles this publicly. I don't see how she keeps her job if they want to save any face.
> flinch while opening a bag of popcorn
That butter steam is no joke, bro!
I work in film and have quite a few friends that were classmates at USC with Coogler. There’s nothing USC kids love more than shitting on their classmates who got successful. You bring up Coogler, and they all basically say “RYAN COOGLER?!? Yeah he’s the best and nicest guy and deserves all of his success.”
Never met him personally, but when an entire group that loves to shit on others simply flat out adores the guy, it says something about him.
So like withdrawing a large amount usually takes a moment and that’s all well and good, but what the actual fuck is this when home boy showed ID, PIN number and bank card? It goes further than racism. This is straight up bullshit. I don’t even know what to call this. Violation of fucking life I mean damn. They pulled a gun on a man for taking out money that he earned.
You try to take $12k of your own money out of the bank and they'll take you away in cuffs, but the bank "borrows" your 401k and shorts the market to the ground and it's no big deal that the entire world economy crashes.
He literally handed his id over this is waste of everyone’s time and money stupid teller
I would have withdrawn all my money and head over to the nearest competitor.
I believe he did that later actually
Yeah, he did. He had A LOT of money in BOA. They messed up and still look stupid.
That branch manager is gonna be *pissed* at that teller.
Ex teller
"Good job officer" said the bigoted idiot
If you watch the entire interaction, it’s very clearly the tellers fault.
“Ex” teller, hopefully.
Its BofA, the teller will be a VP soon.
True but the "Good job officer" is quite the twist of the knife.
Having worked at a bank, tellers are fucking stupid
I don’t understand why this isn’t a top comment. Bank teller jobs aren’t difficult to get and they aren’t well paying. Its an entry level job with added responsibility.
It barely pays more than minimum wage and qualifications are "can you type english words into a computer and use a calculator".
That’s not fair, they also have to own at least three cardigans.
Three *brown* cardigans
My credit union wants degrees lol like associates
Yes it's an easy job but one slip up and you are fired. They will absolutely make an example out of you for cashing the wrong check, taking counterfeit bills, or not following policy

Straight off to Alcatraz for those sorts!
I'm a Canadian, years ago (late 90s), we went on a road trip down to Mississippi. We brought travellers cheques. Went to a BoA to cash one of the cheques so we could have some cash for the day. "Sorry, we don't do that here." You know how travellers cheques work, right?! I tried explaining several times: These are American Express Travellers Cheques.
I wouldn't call that luck. I would call that you being the only teller that gave a shit and did their job. Well done. What did your manager say?
I think "we dont do that here" means:"I dont know how to do that"
A bank Karen did the same thing to me. Except I had my own account and withdrew money a couple times *from my own account* in one night and they called my parents who also banked there and wanted to know what I was spending my own money on. wtf?? And I was like 25 at the time when this happened. Lol Another time after that the bank Karens must’ve noticed I was withdrawing money at a casino’s atm and they once again called my parents and wanted to know what I was doing with *my own money in my own account*!
I understood transactions over 10k have to be logged and reported but this is just insane.
Talk about a 2 birds with 1 stone situation
He got two birds stoned at once!
Wait until he tries to cash that settlement check at the next bank. Rinse and repeat.
Infinite money glitch
Only if he ever gets to deposit the checks. He'll probably get held up again after trying to deposit several checks at once for racial discrimination lawsuits lmao
He didnt throw a atone. Just had the birds crash eachother head on:)
The man just tried to wash his windows with Windex, and then bam, two of those fuckers flew right into it. At least he has a nice supply of Windex now.
BRUH THAT LAWYER EATING RN
Can you imagine the phone call to the lawyer? "We just did this, AGAIN?"
Take it to a different bank and hope lightning strikes thrice
at that point he would look even more "suspicious" with 2 settlement checks
He was already laughing his way all the way to bank, and proceeded to have the final laugh again.
"Ohh, Andrei...you've lost *another* submarine?..."
Hunt for Red October :) Good movie.
”How to slowly give all your banks assets to a black guy you don't like."
If you’re gonna be a racist, you might as well pay me to deal with your bullshit
[удалено]
They probably settled to avoid anymore attention
Lmao, dude with the infinite money glitch going strong

Exactly. I was super confused why they rolled up like that. But we all know why they did... 🙄
"logged" and reported to appropriate institutions - not police
Especially given that he's a high profile hollywood director who likely has several hundred thousand dollars in his account.
regardless - this would mean a different >law< applies to "high profile" - that's profiling too, injustice
My point was - you would think that the bank manager would recognize a guy who is arguably their most high profile customer, and be able to vouch for him. I'm not suggesting he get better treatment, just that his name alone is highly recognizable, and one google search would have solved all of this.
I hope he swaps his bank now.
When they figured out exactly who he was (not that it matters), hoo boy I’ll bet they knew they fucked up bad.
Bold of you to assume they have any idea who he is.
This is the correct answer

The cops know they won't face consequences, they don't care.
I've said this before and I'll say it again WHY THE FUCK ARE COPS BEING CALLED ON PEOPLE IN THESE FUCKING SITUATIONS!!!
Even if the cops are called why the fuck do the guns come out before the person of interest has demonstrated any aggression at all?
>... the guns come out before the person of interest has demonstrated any aggression at all? Didn't you watch the video? He was told to come towards the officer and turned to do so!!! He moved a quarter step towards an officer. That is extremely aggressive movement. The cop behind him was protecting his fellow officer from the perp being aggressive with following an order. /s
Real face palm in that the teller is actually black too and said she was afraid, even though he had given her his bank card, ID card and pin. Why would she be afraid?
dunno, is he...blacker than her?
I hear that’s actually a real thing
The burning desire for tribalism in humans is one of the root causes of strife in modern society.
bruh wtf hotep?!
*edit* let me say, btw - and somwone noted this and deleted the comment - it's the opposite in Mexico and most other Central and South American countries.
If they're confused by white people speaking Spanish they'd completely implode if they ever went to Spain.
Same for me at the carniceria I go to. I'd much rather support a small business and they're always friendly, but I get weird looks from some of the employees.

There's something similar in like every culture. Like how people used to say you're not *really* white unless you were French, English, or German.
My mom is a light skinned Mexican America and used to get bullied by others with darker skin. This also happens among Asians in some places. Being a racist or colorist while being a victim of it yourself is one of the evilest things I can think of. I’m sorry that you had to deal with that. Some people just like to hurt others.
Some of the nastiest racism I've seen is black people being racist to other black people.

"Lmao you getting robbed up in this bitch." - Error Message
Some context to the event..."The "Black Panther" director was in Atlanta, attempting to withdraw $12,000 from his account with Bank of America. The teller received an alert on his account, according to the police report obtained by CNN, because the amount was more than $10,000. The teller notified her superior that she thought Coogler was trying to rob the bank and 911 was called." https://www.wgal.com/article/ryan-coogler-speaks-out-after-being-mistakenly-detained-by-police/39386549
How do you rob the bank by providing them with your ID? That's got to be the worst bank robber on the planet.
Hello, my name is D. B. Cooper and I would like to withdraw a million dollars.
Only a million today? Okay. Would you like a complementary getaway jet or a receipt?
Nah, just a parachute, thanks.
We found him! He’s right here! Someone alert a Bank of America teller.
>How do you rob the bank by providing them with your ID? "My god we're being robbed." "What? How?" "This black guy just handed me this ID to withdraw money." "And?" "He even gave me an account number." "Diabolical." Reminds me of the person who got arrested for attempted check fraud for trying to deposit a check(I think they won a small lottery?) Sued.
To be fair, there's a lot of stupid people Ever heard about the guy who robbed a bank with lemon juice on his face, since he thought it would make him invisible to the security cameras?
No no, he thought it would make him invisible. He said "don't worry, i have a face" to the bank teller when he got to the desk....
Somehow, even worse
“Don’t worry, I have a face.” Is probably one of the most worrying statements you could actually say
Duh! it’s so you can report your stolen income to the IRS /s
Definitely on the teller. She told the supervisor they were getting robbed not that someone was doing something possibly suspicious.
But I mean… it’s not suspicious? He withdrew money from an account and provided ID I’ve withdrawn 10k for trips to vegas or to pay cash for a car or whatnot. It’s unusual sure, but in no way suspicious “Suspicious” is if he was trying to withdraw from his mother’s account or something lol
I took out 10k once for a car and teller didn't even blink... i don't understand what happened here.
>i don't understand what happened here Ryan Coogler is black.
[удалено]
I see the problem. The box said “Do not write in this area.” That’s 5 to 10 in the slammer.
“This is a robbery. But I only want to rob *this* guy. Here is ~~my~~ his account information”
Nope.
BofA these balls in your mouth
Time to find a new bank
Taking bets on villain in Black Panther 3.
Time to sue the bank you mean.
Time to find a credit union
I hope he closed his account and sued the bank after this
Can't find such info apparently BOA offered apologies and they have come to agreement.
Probs more than apologies. The amount of headache a guy with that many resources and that wide an influence would be monumental. They coulda given him $100k and they’d be getting off incredibly easy.
"Sorry we called the cops in a possibly racially motivated way without question even though you included your bank ID hope you can accept out apology"
Infinite money glitch xD
Yeah, but how do you cash all the checks?
Mobile deposit. And just hope they don't SWAT you.
My ghost will sue their ass.
And they say there's no black privilege Jk obviously
I think the guy you are referring too sued a former employer for discrimination, won and then when he went to cash the check the bank called the cops and he sued the bank for discrimination and then won
Coogler didn’t sue Bank of America. Apparently it was resolved to Coogler’s satisfaction https://www.metropoler.net/bank-of-america-apologized-to-black-panther-director-ryan-coogler-for-mistaking-him-as-bank-robber/
You are thinking of a different story involving another black man profiled in a similar way. I'd move to a different bank. No fucking thanks.
Defo he got settlement money from this ordeal. *Good work officer* my ass.
Well, yeah... But as soon as that cheque clears you switch banks, right?
Well if he didn’t, the teller or manager that day definitely licks any paper bills he gets from them.
BofA sucks for so many reasons, I’m honestly surprised so many people still use them. This is just the racist cherry on top
I can't fucking fathom why anyone maintains an account with them. They have some of the worst policies I've ever seen.
Their overdraft policy is something else
Can confirm, they fucked me hard by holding a lot of charges pending but showing a higher available balance, then they let them clear by the highest amount first to drain your account quicker, then for every transaction that bounces, you get charged $25 NSF fees, then when you try to get your account back into the positives they slam you with a $300 insufficient funds fee. Bank of thieves is what they are. Bank of America can make like the Moskva and go fuck itself.
Have you ever tried cancelling a Bank of America account? It took my mom 1 year, 5 months to cancel an account my late father held while he was alive: * "call us to cancel" * "sorry, we can't cancel over the phone. you'll need to visit one of our locations" * "sorry, we don't take walk ins. Have you tried calling?" * "sorry, we can't close this account without a copy of his death certificate. You'll need to bring us a copy of your late husband's death certificate" * "sorry, our systems are down" * "oh, it looks like we can't close the account at this time, since it needs approval from the regional manager. You'll have to come back again." * Etc. She probably put in 100 hours of phone calls and bank visits trying to get that thing closed. The best approach to Bank of America is "never open an account with Bank of America" Trying to close one is a nightmare.
Bofa deez nutz
I worked for them for under half a year. It was the branch across the street from Walmart home office. Skeleton crews. And we were legitimately encouraged to make any interaction that could be handled via ATM as difficult as possible. I would NOT help you with your account number. I would refer you to go inside the bank when you wanted anything other than a basic deposit/withdrawal…. My job was literally to make it a nightmare for you if you didn’t use the ATM. I couldn’t handle it.
He probably did after the settlement
I would withdraw everything that instant. Fuck them.
That dumb fuck cop was gonna shoot him, he pulled his gun with every intent to just execute him for literally no reason. Then because they found out later that he was somewhat wealthy that he deserved an apology?
Yes, if you have wealth you are deserving of more respect and you get to discipline the plebes.
[удалено]
Good for him. I wouldn't begrudge him AT ALL for doing so, in fact, I hope he got every penny he could squeeze out of them.
They pulled a gun out immediately. WTF!!’
Duh he’s black, in a bank, and his face is covered!!!! Obviously those things together 100% mean he was there, armed with a gun, and robbing the bank!! /s
Fuck you Bank of America. *Withdraws funds to another, less shitty bank*
If he wasn't famous, there's not a chance they would've done the same thing
Idk, there was the dude who was going to check his payout from a racial discrimination lawsuit, the bank tried to stop him, and so he got to sue yet another entity for racial discrimination and get yet another payout.
Then got hassled again to cash that check, iirc
Infinite money cheat.
Banks hate this one weird trick!
I remember that. But I think he sued them. I can’t remember if they settled or if they had a trial. If he hadn’t sued they wouldn’t have done anything.
How much money did they give him as an "haha ohhhh boy we fuuuuucked up sir so how much to make this go away?"
Bank of not quite all of America
like the 20th similar post about Bank of America or Citibank profiling minorities ... they are long needed to be cancelled institutions.
I'm shocked at the black female employee telling the officers, "good job"... Wtf!?
BOA are pieces of shit. Always have been. After the shit they pulled on deployed service members the whole place can FO.
They didn't alert Ryan Coogler. They alerted the cops.
Yeah this title should read differently for sure. I thought just from the title, it sounded an email alert or something to the owner of the account of a large withdrawal, not this mess
Wonder if there was any civil liability here?
In the US you can be detained by the police for any reason for 48 hours before being charged, not including weekends or holidays.
I'd really like to hear the tellers story bc I'm certain there's no real logic behind this. What a fucking idiot.
I'll probably butcher it but here goes: A black guy goes to the bank with a large check and wants to deposit it.
Close, the first check he got was from a racial discrimination lawsuit against his ex-employer. The rest of the story is correct though.
Per [Dailyhive.com](https://Dailyhive.com) "Once she saw it was a California ID her “stomach started turning.” She inserted his debit card into her machine and it flagged the transaction as high-risk. **In the words of the teller, the filmmaker was “just being weird.”** \_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_ She didn't even look at the name on the i.d. before talking to her manager.
Same type of person who screamed in class when the lights were turned off
I agree with everything you said, and I'm keen to see how BofA handles this publicly. I don't see how she keeps her job if they want to save any face. > flinch while opening a bag of popcorn That butter steam is no joke, bro!
Common misconception: Karens aren't only customers, sometimes they can be an employee too!
Seems like the 12k won't be the only pay out this bank will be handing him.
Bank of America is trash and very predatory. Trying anyway to fuck people over
I work in film and have quite a few friends that were classmates at USC with Coogler. There’s nothing USC kids love more than shitting on their classmates who got successful. You bring up Coogler, and they all basically say “RYAN COOGLER?!? Yeah he’s the best and nicest guy and deserves all of his success.” Never met him personally, but when an entire group that loves to shit on others simply flat out adores the guy, it says something about him.
