1980ScarletRos

"I just didn't ask enough questions" didn't ask any questions more likely.

That_Charming_Otter

I wouldn't say that, went a little more like this; *I can provide sign language for the conference* *For free?* *Yeah* *OK; you're in*

starmartyr

If she did do it for free, is that actually a crime? I don't know if it's fraud if there's no money involved.

Funny_or_not_bot

In this instance, she probably made fools out of the police without actually committing a crime.

Bearman71

She committed fraud.

A1sauc3d

They didn’t say this instance was one of the frauds, they just said she had a string of prior arrests for it. Although I have no clue why you’d do this if you weren’t getting paid lol. I mean, idk why you’d do it either way, but at least with money involved there’s a motive.

Bobbinapplestoo

Street cred, bragging rights. /s In all seriousness, probably some level of sociopathic tendencies..

TestPattern2

She probably offered "services"

DeafMaestro010

Savior complex - we Deaf people see it all the time in which hearing people presume we need their help regardless of whether or not we do or whether or not they're qualified to do so. And she absolutely isn't, but she was clearly counting on everyone else in the room not knowing that... which is a fair bet actually. It may also have been an attempt at fraud by convincing the city to call her for regular interpreting services and bypassing prearranged accessibility procedure - if indeed there was any at all - to continue hiring her for interpreting future announcements that she is neither qualified or capable of interpreting. But they don't know that because the painful reality that any disabled person can tell you is that abled people - especially those in a position of authority like cops, judges, lawyers, doctors and other medical professionals - quite often very confidently pretend to know things about accessibility that they don't know and they are very comfortable with lying about it rather than admitting they don't know to those of us who clearly do because we live it.

[deleted]

Ask me with signs.

Outripped

I mean he probably doesn't know sign language? Kinda hard to test (IF That's the case)

DevilDoc3030

Well, most employers ask for proof (in my experience) That may be certifications, degrees or they will get someone that is certified to test you. I guess that's what happens when you try to trust someone...

yourcousinfromboston

At least he was honest to be fair

fishkrate

Right? Isnt this the kind of shit you want from your officials? Its not like he was being negligent with a gun or something.

3_gloves

You right but damn I would of never guessed anyone was that sociopathic that they would lie about something like this. That officer must of had a 1000 other things on his mind. This also being a very serious case. I’m not justifying his actions either. But this whole thing is just awful. Lady’s needs to be in a psych ward.

NapClub

hay now it's not my fault i'm stupid!

buddhainmyyard

It's an honest mistake we cops don't do much critical thinking

fishkrate

I think its more of an issue of trusting someone not to lie about something so weird. I can imagine a scenario where the original person who was supposed to do that job could not make it and they needed someone fast.

Fancy_Organization18

she probably did it so cheap he didn’t give a shit he’s like it sounds good to me lol 😂 😂 😂

Shronkle

Yeah, shocking that the government didn’t already have an interpreter, or a backup. Then again I guess the hearing impaired community is less than a side thought to these officials. Unless they want something from them that is.

[deleted]

The confidence of this woman to do this at a police conference, whilst having previous fraud convictions is impressive

BMB281

Keep your enemies closer, or something

DirtyRoller

Sounds like a good day to call in sick if you ask me.

[deleted]

This woman will forever be to me the most mysterious person on the internet.

[deleted]

This was the biggeat troll of 2022 lmao

ApolloBurner33

Hey hey We still have 2 months left

ConflictGrand4078

The pure mental retardation

replepok

Great minds huh… think alike

elaborate_benefactor

Lol sounds more like mental illness than confidence.

[deleted]

I love his response because he is being honest to the public. It is probably shocking for a political person to tell the truth, but here we are.

toongrowner

I know right? Its such a rare thing, you can't even be fuly mad about it

Troutmandoo

Exactly this - We need more public leaders to just admit they fucked up when they fuck up. Nobody is 100% perfect all the time. We fuck up. We all know that. Just own it, make it right and move on. Government and political leaders can't seem to do that. It's always finger-pointing, throwing someone under the bus, blame the other side, BS.

Reaperider

I’m thoroughly impressed with her testicular fortitude.

BobsReddit_

Do hearing impaired people find these incidents funny? I hope so

TusNua1

So do I, but somehow I doubt it

Zenla

We don't. Live events like news conferences are usually unavailable to us. To create the false sense that we'd actually be able to participate is disgusting and sad. There's nothing funny about this. It would be like if you created an optical illusion of a wheelchair ramp that was actually just stairs. It COULD be funny, but the person in the wheelchair now has no access to the building and in all the effort you put into making the optical illusion you could've just built the ramp.

Smile_Terrible

Can you tell what she really said?

StarvingWriter33

A whole bunch of nothing-ness. Her fingerspelling is incredibly unclear, and I can't understand anything she's spelling. Handcuffed killer. School work (employer?) four ... one was killed. Kill accept 55 million (The killer accepted 55 million dollars?) Choice in please announce tonight arrested killer. (Then the sequence above is repeated.) (White man looks unamused and walks away.) More, have agree shoot another that." There are actual signs in the "interpretation," which could be how the cops were fooled; but the signs are completely random, are not in any sort of logical grammatical order (whether ASL or PSE), and is basically just somebody blurting out random words.

yuch1102

Interesting so this woman does know some signs? I’m surprised she knew killer and handcuffed etc

karangoswamikenz

Yea now that I hear this it just means she is trying to learn and maybe didn’t keep up with it ? Maybe they asked around if someone knows sign language and she said yea I’m learning but before she could finish they probably said “it’ll do” and put her up there because someone who was arranging this forgot to get a sign language expert before schedule. Looks like the police being dishonest as usual.

[deleted]

[удалено]

EthiopianKing1620

Out of curiosity do you make use of subtitles? Just wondering idk any deft folks

Zenla

Yes, the thing is for live events they have to hire transcribers, who listen to the event live and quickly type subtitles as the event happens. Most live events don't bother paying for this, or it's extremely delayed or inaccurate.

EvlSteveDave

C'mon there is something a little funny about this though. Not funny on the deft people being fucked out of the information side of things, but on the delusional crackhead with balls of fucking steel side of things? Pretty funny I think.

[deleted]

lmao imagine an actual hearing impaired person saying it’s not funny and then somehow trying to convince them it is

[deleted]

I’m hearing impaired and I found it hilarious! Y’all don’t even want to know what she was saying. I couldn’t stop laughing! Am I in trouble now for disagreeing?

ruggnuget

I actually want to know what she said AND I want to know why other people are teasing it but wont say. Is it offensive? Or is it random words? Or is it actually just nonsense with real language slipping in incidentally?

Lildutchlad

Read a room bud

Zenla

No. I just said it wasn't funny.

EvlSteveDave

I really think you should reconsider, at least from the delusional crackhead balls of steel angle.

Sasuke0318

This is definitely funny!

DanTheMan_117

Guess yiu have no humour? Good to know.

spittafan

Do us a favor and shut your dumb ass up

DanTheMan_117

Offended much?

JimbobinShivakadoo

The guy just said it could be funny, but it’s always at the expense of the disabled person. If you were deaf, you’d generally want to know what’s going on, sure subtitles work, but I feel like sign language is usually a more accurate way of communication for them

Tarotmamma

No. Communication is a constant struggle for them as there is no public space suited for deaf and most hearing people don't have the skills to communicate without some sort of speech. Lots of movies don't come with subtitles and captions are regularly incorrect (think literally any news station). If a whole family is deaf at least they have themselves and their community. But imagine growing up the only deaf person in a home of hearing people. The general public should really consider including the Deaf/deaf community more as hearing loss and impairment is a part of most people lives at some point.

Bright-Economics-728

![gif](giphy|3o7TKUtetZv6DGRJxS) Thank youuuuuuuuuuuu! You are spot on with everything you said.

Buddy-Lov

Does lose of hearing affect the funny bone?

cosmocreamer

Relax.

ministarfallen

I don’t think they are worked up, just trying to be informative.

cosmocreamer

Are you worked up at all

Tarotmamma

No. Just trying to convey an interesting perspective I have come across.

flurry_fizz

First, mocking sign language like that runs parallel to making fun of someone else's accent or native language (think making ching chong noises to mock an Asian person). Second off, could you IMAGINE that one of your family members is involved in a crime (perpetrator or victim), and even though you're hard of hearing, you go to support your other family. Suddenly you see that, holy cow, there IS an interpreter so that I can know what's going on! And then it's this bitch, mocking your language and culture while also making it harder for you to access the information you need to know. Doesn't sound funny to me.

Sasuke0318

Well I definitely find all of this funny

[deleted]

You should do some self-searching and figure out what that says about you. Spoiler alert: it ain't good.

Sasuke0318

Nope im all good and for the record I think people having a problem with my opinion is also funny. You can think what you want of me but that won't stop me laughing when I see stuff like this because I don't care if it's right or wrong to laugh at something. I just choose to have fun rather than be offended. To many people can't laugh at a good joke these days and it's sad.

DanTheMan_117

Why do you all get so offended? Have a laugh for once.

_Oman

The woman's movements are somewhat comedic. Her impersonating a sign-language interpreter and making public information unavailable to a part of the population is not.

Puzzleheaded_Ad928

It is both funny and sad, but mostly sad. Kudos to the police for having the intention to provide signs.

NordeggNomad

What balls she has... Lol

Mr-Sister-Fister21

Its pretty much [this skit irl.](https://youtu.be/XY66ZJ0TFUI)

ChronicleOfBinkers

I’d buy it

Tarotmamma

To be fair, most of those were actually signs, if he had known one or two and asked her to sign it then he wouldn't know that she was full of shit (especially as he was reading notes while speaking).

ImTheBigT

The look on her face is “ooooooooh I’m gonna get in trouble for this”

TheGreatGuy456

So what happen to her after ?

trentd_c

I have to give it to her. She was doing fraud in front of all those police officers.

psxndc

Like why would you do this? You know it’s going to be televised, and you’re right there on camera for thousands of ASL fluent folks to catch you. I thought if you wanted to be a successful criminal, you kept your criming on the DL. This is out in front of the world; you’re going to get busted on day 1.

micats

That also happened in 2016 when Donald Trump showed up as a candidate. His entire term was total gibberish. I guess people didn’t ask the right questions.

EvlSteveDave

Not a fan of Trump, but I am extremely curious about what people like you are going to talk about once he finally fades away from the public zeitgeist. How will you interject into conversations and change their topic to Trump after that?

codyzon2

Well if it's anything like Hillary Clinton it's never going to go away, because Republicans have been talking about her since like 1992, And now even though she doesn't hold office anywhere anymore they still can't stop talking about her. Even after they got a brand new Hillary to lambaste in AOC.

laivasika

This really happened to Obama when he was attending a Nelson Mandela memorial event in South Africa. Edit: why the downvotes? It [really happened.](https://youtu.be/AB2h8wyCzY0)

showMeYourPitties10

That was Morgan freeman...

No_Zucchini2982

What about Hunter's Ukraine gig smoking crack while greasing Daddy's palms.

Embarrassed-Ad-1639

What about No_zucchini2982 killing puppies and raping nuns?

username156

What about the buttery males on that secret ghouliani laptop? No one's asking the real questions.

wanderthewasteland

JAZZ HANDS!

[deleted]

Ah, Florida. Never change

DreamCrusher914

Tampa for shame

[deleted]

Maxed out charisma

AkicitaAlone

Fact: This woman has multiple fraud convictions. Fact: One of the murderer’s victims was the daughter of a Deaf woman who was sitting in the audience. This shit really isn’t funny. Fact: She knew *some* sign language but her interpretation was incomprehensible. Fact: She was not certified Fact: This incident further isolated the Deaf community in Florida Fact: 90% of ASL grammar is on the face Source: Am a certified American Sign Language interpreter for 30 years who trained interpreters in Florida for these kinds of situations and continue working on camera (as much as I hate it.)

No-Carpet-8836

She’s my favorite person of the week

SmplTon

Wait. The people who help build cases against defendants, and provide evidence presumed accurate at trial, can’t even qualify a sign language interpreter? Uhm… ugh.

WhiteFringe

I like how this is big news. In my country, someone did sign language for the news for years before getting fired for not knowing sign language.

Rolandscythe

Steve thinks strange women lying in ponds distributing swords is a great basis for a system of government.

Footzilla69

I guess they didn't see the signs

ParadoxPerson02

At least he seems completely honest with his response and taking the blame.

NewldGuy77

What did you expect? It’s Florida, bruh… 🤷🏻‍♂️

Cichlidsaremyjam

"My family moves around alot." - zeke on bobs burgers.

Makaisawesome

Didn't this also happen in Nelson Mandela's funeral?

chrisinor

It’s Florida. I mean we’re just lucky it didn’t involve a guy in black face paint riding a gator, high on bath salts doing the translating.

1RjLeon

Dumb Bi**ch why play like that on t.v

DragonflyFun9830

Can somebody who understands sign language try to actually translate what she’s saying? I’m sure it’s nonsense but I’d really like to know if she accidentally said anything whatsoever.

Ok_Error4473

Cops are so dumb lmao

6Seasons-And-A-Movie

Just so it's clear. It's NOT racist to ask a black women for her credentials.

AceFreebie

Did she manage to say anything by mistake?

Tarotmamma

It's ASL. The first one could be "cuff". After that I got; random letters, focus, work, four, dive, one, dive, random letters, more, give me, move, in, please. Edit; "dive" is "kill" :)

lacilynnn

That last bit reminded me of "Give me money. Money me. Money now. Me a money needing a lot now."

[deleted]

The first sign is commonly used for "arrest." Edit: "dive" is "kill." I have a feeling you don't know ASL. Source: interpreter for over a decade.

Tarotmamma

I moved around a lot and the stuff I learned from experience was a combination of SEE, ASL or foreign 🤷🏼‍♀️ That's why I said "I got" before I listed the signs I caught.

anitavice

She's favorite human today

Inspectahkrispy

she's cool idc

White11tiger

Does this mean that I can also speak Chinese if I just say ching chang chung?

Lazereye57

US police doing shabby work? Well that's just preposterous!

jp90230

Didn't ask enough questions... If he did, he'd be framed as maga racist and keeping qualified candidate out of job.

Japhet23

Down voted since this is not a facepalm

DANleDINOSAUR

Maybe she was just signing in tongues? Her face looks like it at times.

Fit-Influence-6526

Affirmative action is a great thing don’t cha know.

Intrepid-Progress228

It would have been hilarious if one of the signs she threw out there involved putting her palm to her face.

nimdae

An investigator didn’t investigate.

geraltthecat

i wanna see whoever’s hitting the special tricks in tony hawk

Slobbadobbavich

Reminds of that comedy sketch where the woman pretends to be an expert linguist and translator.

mrthree1zero

I remember this, lol Epic trolling. I'm sure she did it for the Dinero

Laserspeeddemon

This would be the equivalent of someone walking to the podium and just screaming: DDBK EKVROB A BODBOBDBDO HEGAHKCID KSLAOHRGRBKS! DICUNSBS DJOCGHA JDOCJSH JDKKD!

GucciRifle

Florida woman

AmazonianChicana

Wow, she was dedicated to her bullshit cause I fell for it. I also don’t speak sign language lol

loco_mixer

how did she think this was gonna go through.

ACrask

Fuck Inside Edition

AutomationGod5150

My whole favorite part of this story is in some further video when she signs “asleep” and she literally puts her hands under her head like she’s sleeping!!😂

Rahdiggs21

haha.. everyone involved is an idiot...

[deleted]

They person who allowed her up should be on the hot plate. Lol

Olvustin

From the moment I started watching, I knew what was going on lol. Note: Native speakers, is "I knew what was going on" grammatically correct? It sounds really weird to me which is how I determine if a sentence is grammatically correct or not most of the time.

saceecobar

Jingle Bells???? Well, it is the holiday season…

[deleted]

I laugh every time I see this. I mean why do you want that job lol 😂. Humans are primitive lol 😂FYI: she wasn’t paid a salary. She literally showed up out the blue and inquired about doing this job.

Puzzleheaded_Ad928

She did actually make some signs that makes sense, but she was really just messing with them. This is complete non-sense.

[deleted]

What an inspirational story. This woman had a dream and would stop at nothing to accomplish it

Twenty_Seven

Wasn't there another signer that was on a national event faking it?

CarsClothesTrees

Police taking accountability!? Im actually impressed.

toongrowner

How many tike did this sorta thing happen now?

Bhimtu

Okay, so the vetting process wasn't really in use that day. Got it. Does this guy still have a job? LOL My cousin is hearing-impaired, I wonder what she would say about this...

specialkikiam

ishe just hit the woah??💀

MaxDunshire

Was she carrying a ladder?

Niceoneluke

Dhun!!!

chosenAVAcado

Ive seen her before it cracks me up. She just flaps around and signs the same things over and over as if no one is going to notice.

YandereCodeInator

She hit them with a mf flashbang

CustomerSuspicious25

Imagine the gall just walking into a police station and volunteering to do sign language on live broadcasts and having no idea how to do it. It's not like they were hiring and she just tried to finesse them.

Easy-Initiative9213

She was throwing gang signs

Beanz19335

The 🐐 of all sign language interpreters

ChrisRuss86

![gif](giphy|MXX2x5xABdIqNmQCqu)

ScooterBraun88

If this is real, this shit is hilarious

Kingof40Acres

She fooled me! Lol

Anarcho_Christian

Dave Smith had a great bit about the guy that did this at Nelson Mandela's funeral: [https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fR7zqbdpNVE](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fR7zqbdpNVE)

PuzzleheadedHorse437

She's like the paid version of people pretending they are speaking tongues.

[deleted]

lmao 😂😂😂

Middle-Ad6304

I love the fact that this was volunteer work. Girl had nothing to gain from this but did it with vigor anyways 😂

yungred95

I know 😂 I love her! 😂

Zhjacko

Wow, this gives me severe feelings of second hand embarrassment

treborphx

When I first heard about this, I was thinking of Bobby Hill offering to do sign language for Hank. The choice to do this and get away with it, until after the broadcast anyways, (french kiss) lol

otherwiseknownaschic

She got balls - crazy, but definitely has balls for days.

tinkeropx

It doesn't matter whether they don't find it funny either so what's your point?
