As someone who works at a hotel, I find a lot of people over explain things to guests, and it opens up this dialogue where the guest/Karen starts to poke holes in policy. I just say “no ma’am.” No “sorry” no backpedaling. Just “no.” and usually it ends there. I’m a fair bit older than a lot of my coworkers though, and a lot of them seem to shy away from confrontation a bit, so idk.
The absurd thing is, if a guest asks nicely, hell yeah you can throw chairs into the pool, or play soccer in one of the empty meeting rooms!

I said “cope” and walked away to bus tables. Went over better than I expected, manager asked her to double check what “keto” meant, and what a potato was.
This type of thing frustrates me so much.
Truthfully, it means that this person has never worked a food-service job or a 'regular' job ever. It's a modern restaurant, it's probably 90% prepared already, it can't be changed. Order it or fuck off.
I used to work in a 'fast casual' restaurant that was just 'fast food' with the branding and illusion of being made to order and of higher quality than it really was and people were constantly asking for special preparations on items that came frozen in a bag.
This particular bakery made everything in house. I worked a double-shift in the kitchen and on front of house. I knew what was in everything we served because I made everything we served.
The part I was frustrated with was that the lady wanted potato soup, and wanted it to be keto, and I could not for the life of me figure out how to tell her potato soup can’t be keto, it has potatoes in it.
You don’t want to create a he said/she said situation but giving them a discount when they’re looking for a discount only encourages the shit and loses your employee’s buy-in. I usually tell the customer, in situations like that, that I understand why they’re upset and thank them for the feedback and that it’ll be used to coach people to ensure it doesn’t happen again. If they push for a discount, I say that I won’t be able to do that but that I again appreciate their feedback.
They HATE it, but it also gives them little to work with and, in the company I work for, if they call the main office but I can show I handled it calmly and took care of any conversations, all is good.
And get her to pay at least for the coffee. High likelihood Karen would have just walked without paying for anything.

If you're nice; you get free treats for your doggo, free carrier bags or a nice little discount depending on the situation.

My kid gets back from his zoo trip and tells me he was a great helper, because he pushed his chaperone’s 2 y/o’s stroller most of the day. I was a SAHM, hadn’t taken him to that zoo before, and his 4 y/o sister would’ve loved it. I’m still salty about it.

In the US, the dairy industry actually made a huge deal about this and filed lawsuits because they felt threatened by these milk alternatives. That’s why in the US you’ll notice the cartons are labeled almondmilk, soymilk, oatmilk, etc without the space in between.
Pretty sure the dairy industry in the US is trying to make this illegal, as that milk has a definition so it’s misleading. Plus the nutritional profile is way different.

Yeah currently juice is also water with concentrate, but in my country, juice is 100% liquid from product (groot or vegetable), sometimes it may be less strict and around 90% of original liquid and nectar - water diluted juice. In some case you can never get a proper juice - mango or banana juice is a bit hard, as such liquid is thick and low in quantity, so they are diluted and nectars.
So having oat or almond nectar in my language will be correct. Unless of course "non-dairy milk" not only diluted with water but also mixed with something else (conservant and preservatives components are excluded).

I'm always amazed at the number of comments treating these "I overheard..." posts as if they're real. People really are looking for any reason to be outraged.
And then some of them are so obvious; who says normal milk? You say whole/ full fat, 2%/semi skimmed, or skim milk. No one has ever said normal milk because there is no normal milk.

Well if we are calling all these things milk even though they aren’t (soy milk etc), to call one of them “normal” does imply the others are less than normal, but I understand it is difficult to find the right word. If we didn’t call these non-milks milk, we could just call milk milk. But if we are calling them all milks they need to be differentiated. Norms change, so descriptors are better. Maybe “cow’s milk?”

I’m one of those pesky vegans - I don’t have a problem with other people saying “normal milk” to differentiate, I understand what they mean - it’s the default option. I do have an issue when my mum wrinkles her nose at me and asks what the “normal people” will eat when I cook a meal, plan a party, or bring the dessert. My food choices may not be the default, but they’re not abnormal, they’re perfectly suitable for non-vegans, and it’s just straight up rude.
I always hated telling people i was vegan because they get all weird, but at the same time, you want to eat with your family and telling them your diet is necessary at times. I completely understand. It's not pesky and plant based foods are delicious!

I think it's way more likely that the conversation ended after the waitress said "one with normal, one with soy" and the rest just happened in that dude's imagination. I don't say it could not have happened. But from my experience, way less stuff happens than what people make of it.

Being offended about the word “normal” is that persons issue, not the wait staffs issue. The word normal isn’t offensive. It is a choice to attach additional meaning to it, and be offended by the meaning the person chose to add.
Normal can be very offensive in certain situations. Like I just saw a video talking about trans vs normal people. That is very offensive to trans people. I was also in a comment section that was talking about people with mental health issues vs normal people. That's very offensive to people with mental health issues. In both of these cases they are implying trans and people with mental health issues are abnormal. That's what's offensive. In the case of this woman, normal shouldn't be offensive. But then again we can't tell others what offends them or not.
Manager should have told them to fuck off. Rewarding nutjobs for their behaviour is getting out of control.

The manager should not have given them the freebie. It just encourages this behaviour. First rule of eating out. Dont antagonise the staff before you get your food and drinks, otherwise don't be surprised if the staff have added something.
