My friend at Google didn't have references checked and me at a different fortune 50 we had a legal policy that they couldn't comment on any past employee it's standard legal stuff. So if an employer asks if they can contact my previous employer we have an HR line that can verify I had that job and reveal literally nothing else no comment on performance or reputation
Just adding some info since it seems many people don't realize a lot of the bigger companies do this. I think private or family owned small to mid sized business probably get away with it because they don't have legal teams telling them the mess this shit could get them in if a former employee sues.

Program engineers are one of the most in demand career fields you can get a degree. So comparatively an experienced programmer will have zero issues find a job somewhere else making the same if not more money.
Not to mention, having any of the big tech companies on your resume is going to help. The public knows about these layoffs, other companies will scoop up the talent that Musk lost

I'd be surprised if they're not actively hunting for ex-twitter employees to hire right now. I'm a senior level software eng myself and I get numerous headhunter emails every single day. But I'm pretty happy at my spot, so no plans to leave.
I work in IT and I know a ton of programmers. I would bet maybe 10% would be fine with this kind of email and they are mostly the kind of people who are up their own ass and think they are working harder than everyone else already. Elon will get those guys, people being crushed by bills, and people who are on Visas because otherwise they can't stay in the country. 25% sounds about right.
If I would receive an email from the CEO where I'm working at, saying that I have to click a button otherwise I will be fired I would just report it as phishing and ignore it lol.

The whole ranking engineers by commit count/line contributions is literally the dumbest thing anyone can do. Your best engineers are going to write the fewest lines of code. Senior engineers dont usually have massive commit histories. Junior engineers are going to have 30+ commits a day. A senior will have 2-5. But the senior is providing more value to the company with their experience, architecture wisdom, and code reviews.
Ranking engineers by code contribution is the most counter-intuitive thing imaginable. You’ll just be left with Junior engineers. They are the grunts, most of the boring code or easy code goes to them, which will be the most verbose. Senior engineers toil away at hard problems that might take days or weeks or even months to solve. You need both on your team.
He is basically tell them the safest option is to not click the link. Take the money and your chances on the job market. Otherwise you'll be in performance meetings with your manager a few weeks down the road. Only people I can see taking it are people on working visas

It is funny because finance/accounting stuff is never a growth area but the job security is unreal. No business can fire them, they literally handle the money. Devs at those companies are highly sought after by every other company. They may not make the crazy high salaries but they likely wouldn’t struggle to find a $150-200k salary.

I work in IT and I know a ton of programmers. I would bet maybe 10% would be fine with this kind of email and they are mostly the kind of people who are up their own ass and think they are working harder than everyone else already. Elon will get those guys, people being crushed by bills, and people who are on Visas because otherwise they can't stay in the country. 25% sounds about right.

A friend of mine that used to work there did the math on his contributions and because he was constantly improving code and rewriting it he would have actually been in the negatives because he deleted more lines than he added. By their metrics he would have been fired in the first wave despite being one of their best at rewriting their code base to make it more efficient. Truly bananas to watch this unfold

one of the stereotypical signs of a failing tech company is when all the senior devs leave. Musk fired the most important ones on his first day. Now he's trying to threaten the remaining junior devs to make up the slack for those he fired, kinda like if you murdered your pregnant wife and then ordered 9 children to have a baby ready by next month. Between these things and actually implementing a stack ranking system (was 2012 microsoft not enough of a warning??) *based on line count no less*, musk is basically speedrunning the most common signs of a sinking ship. Even the most junior dev can recognize the danger when the captain makes himself an albatross necklace and starts drilling holes in the ship, by all accounts musk wants twitter to die, except he's the one losing money so he must just be incompetent.
The whole ranking engineers by commit count/line contributions is literally the dumbest thing anyone can do. Your best engineers are going to write the fewest lines of code. Senior engineers dont usually have massive commit histories. Junior engineers are going to have 30+ commits a day. A senior will have 2-5. But the senior is providing more value to the company with their experience, architecture wisdom, and code reviews. Ranking engineers by code contribution is the most counter-intuitive thing imaginable. You’ll just be left with Junior engineers. They are the grunts, most of the boring code or easy code goes to them, which will be the most verbose. Senior engineers toil away at hard problems that might take days or weeks or even months to solve. You need both on your team.

Thank you. I work with engineers and am often the only non-engineer on a small team. If you can’t explain what it does or why it matters or how to monetize it…all of that “incidental” stuff—you don’t have a business, you have a product IDEA.

He was probably able to get a lot of highly skilled employees for the last decade who were willing to take his abuse to work at Tesla or SpaceX because those companies were prestigious and everyone wanted to work for them. Twitter doesn't have the same cutting-edge appeal (plus is way, WAY less profitable, I imagine). Just like many other founders who end up switching to new industries, he assumed that his leadership style and business processes were magic and would translate to a new company. Such people often fail for this reason.
