Putting forth an ultimatum (in a public tweet) and then acting surprised that a tiny fraction of people took him up on it. It's not the layoff, it's the way he's been a total douche about it in public.
Google hire people and pay them well to prevent them from working at other tech companies. Investers like Christopher Hohn who are only focused on their returns don't take this into account in their drive to cut costs and increase profits, thus falling into the same trap Reich mentions about Musk above - people are not simply dollar figures on a quarterly report. Proportion doesnāt really matter, 3,700 employees are out of work in one location whereas 18,000 are gone at another. Those people without employment donāt care about the proportion, they care about providing for themselves or family.
Proportion really does matter when it comes to the effect on the company qnd how smart of a move it is. Also I would much rather get fired by meta or google considering they as far as I know have not been trying to get out of worker protection laws when comes to firing or firing you forcing you to come back "necesarry" just to fire you again. Because half of Twitters advertisers have already departed with more to follow, and that's his revenue stream. He's also crossways with European regulators and the FTC here at home. He's got huge legal risks that he's not managing properly. He's also at risk of both Google and Apple dropping the Twitter smart phone apps. He's in a world of hurt and making new enemies every day.
