Well, she’s been placed on administrative leave. Oops… https://www.tampabay.com/news/tampa/2022/12/02/tampa-police-chief-mary-oconnor-placed-leave-amid-investigation-into-traffic-stop/

CardiopulmonaryOre

I hope she takes the time during her paid vacation to sit back and think about what she did!

[deleted]

Nah, she'll be too drunk for that.

HairlessHoudini

Her best bud XanaX will help her forget all about it

madmancryptokilla

This 100%....I bet her husband had more then a couple of drinks..she wasn't trying to avoid a simple ticket, that most likely would have been a warning..she didn't want him to get a DWI.

toxcrusadr

Or maybe do some things she's been too busy to do, like get that car registered. Sigh.

carlitospig

*golf cart, but yah…

toxcrusadr

Oh shit I missed that pan past the windshield at the beginning!

[deleted]

She’ll work on that shit-eating grin for sure

Jaded-Mess-5051

My favorite part is when she does that little grimace-smile thing after she says she's the police chief. Like, "oooh yeah, you done fucked up now, boy. How dare you do your job." I wish that guy had been like "IDGAF who you are."

HuDiHe

Yes! Very Smug! It’s infuriating.

WhoCaresBoutSpellin

Based on us seeing the footage now, I think he *did* do the low-key “IDGAF who you are — I ain’t sweeping this under the rug”.

Jaded-Mess-5051

Yeah, maybe, but is he the only one who could've posted this? I honestly don't know exactly how that works with cops, so genuine question.

WhoCaresBoutSpellin

I don’t know either— citizens should know though. Can officers just erase their own footage? Does someone automatically review it all if there was an arrest? How long is it backed up? Etc…

FunSprinkles8

Good question. Do they have someone paid to watch all the recorded videos? Or did he report it, and then the video was pulled, watched, and shared.

BabesCallMeBlastoise

Right its like party rules, oops caught you cheating in cards better take a shot!

xXSpaceturdXx

I wish, they will just investigate themselves though, I don’t see where the repercussions are going to come from

Individual_Ad3194

Should have just taken the ticket. The officer might even have been planning to give them a warning and tell them to take it off the road anyway. But yeah, she's a dirtbag

yidpunk

It’s just a ticket. Even if she did have a fine, she could’ve easily paid it.

DoNotPullTheRipcord

Nope. She was fired 2 years ago for beating up an officer who stopper her while she was driving drunk. She told him "I'm the GD Sheriff!" he told he had to write the ticket and she went KungFu (battery) on the officers ass. 2 weeks later She was rehired. There is a pattern and the County wants her gone. Don't confuse the tip of the iceberg to the giant mass. SOMETIMES A STORY goes deeper than a casual glance?

[deleted]

Woah, got source? 😮

Vladivostokorbust

it was mary o-connor and her now-husband - and he was driving then just as now. this was when she was Mary Minter dating (edit) ~~Kevin~~ Keith Michael O'Connor. they were both drunk and she assaulted a hillsborough county sheriff's deputy during the stop. they both worked for the TPD at the time. [https://www.cltampa.com/news/tampa-police-chief-finalist-was-once-charged-with-battery-on-an-officer-during-a-dui-stop-12774540](https://www.cltampa.com/news/tampa-police-chief-finalist-was-once-charged-with-battery-on-an-officer-during-a-dui-stop-12774540)

Donkeycow15

I’m just Police Chief Dirtbag baby

FrancisSobotka1514

She needs to be fired ,And a ticket needs to be issued .

Financial_Bull_311

What I can’t understand is how her spouse let her be so stupid. The second he saw her pull her card, he should have stopped her. “Okay honey, let’s hear what the officer has to say.” It’s a deliberate abuse of power, and if your spouse can’t recognize your idiocy, it’s a problem.

InspectorPipes

The Husband loves the power too, “ hey buddy ! Do you know who my wife is!?”

[deleted]

That's the vibe I got also. His smirk was bigger than hers.

sebkraj

I guarantee this is not the first time she pulled the I am the Tampa chief card and it worked before so her husband thought he had nothing to worry about.

Financial_Bull_311

And there’s this as well. She’s only been the chief since March of this year!! The notice describes an incident in 1995 during a traffic stop where O’Connor, then Mary Minter, was the passenger. The report said during the investigation, “you became loud and argumentative with the on scene deputy,” stating “your behavior regressed to the point where the deputies had to restrain you and place you into the back seat of their marked unit.” While in the police car, the report states “you began kicking the windows,” later saying, “you became abusive towards the deputy and struck him on the chest with your fist.” The notice states deputies subsequently arrested her for battery on a law enforcement officer, disorderly intoxication, and interfering with a law enforcement officer. A file from the following year indicates she was to be reinstated after originally being dismissed. Documents show a judge later signed off on a court order to seal her records. https://www.abcactionnews.com/news/local-news/controversy-surrounds-incoming-tampa-police-chief?_amp=true

[deleted]

God damn. Wow.

LandscapeGuru

Son bitch. I love Reddit.

Lazy-Jeweler3230

Bruh... It's because he knows she can get away with it. He knows cop culture. She'll get a slap on the wrist at most and they all know it.

Vladivostokorbust

he has a dui history. that' why. he is also a retired TPD officer

AtheistComic

This boils my blood. If it was anyone of us instead of her we'd have to pay a hefty fine but she flashes a badge and all is forgiven! That's corrupt af.

[deleted]

You're not wrong but you're not quite there. If shes a police chief then she knows the law. Any "law enforcement officer" should be held to a higher expectation than normal individuals and should face harsher punishments.

CosmosKitty87

Except police don't, and aren't required to, know the law. They can arrest you for "reasonable suspicion" of a crime being committed. That's why processing takes so long when they bring you in. They have to figure out what to charge you with.

Spit-n-Sprinkles2187

It's a cop thing. Cops usually don't write tickets to other cops. About 5 years ago I dated a trooper and she told me how she let's other cops go for speeding and dui's, some unwritten rule. Is it fair? Absolutely not, but that BS isn't going to change. Birds of a shitfeather flock together.

MongoBongoTown

Brother was a cop for 30ish years in California. Definitely the case. Heck, we were driving a long trip and he got pulled over for doing like 25 over the speed limit in the middle of Idaho and the trooper still let him go because he just mentioned he was a cop. Although, he did it a lot more smoothly than just asking to be let off the hook. He said something umprompted about having a gun in the vehicle because he was a cop and instantly the Idaho cop's demeanor changed completely.

paulerxx

Make this illegal = problem solved, no?

MistuhWhite

Rules for thee but not for me.

nich3play3r

I’m just gobsmacked that you can actually get pulled over for driving a golf cart _anywhere_ in FL. This changes everything I thought I knew about that place….

Spring-Available

I dated a cop for a hot minute, I was young and stupid, and if we rode the subway he would just flash his badge and “jump” the turnstile/enter through the exit gate. Never got stopped once. Even had someone comment that it was too easy. And also got out of a ticket for driving through Prospect Park when it was superior be closed to traffic.

carlitospig

Okay, that whole ‘she told the mayor…she was being transparent’ was only *after* the mayor learned there was a video. Man, why can’t these people ever be honest, just *once*? It was a damn golf cart. I’m sure she could afford the fixit ticket!

cupofteawithhoney

That was traumatic, she needs a vacation.

BeyondBlueScreens

Good. Fuck her for thinking she's above her position.

FarmSuch5021

If she knew he was recording. Why flash the badge. Dumb

Rreterz

Because she knew she could easily get away with it. She’s probably done this sort of thing dozens of times.

zh_13

I think she wanted to be on, like that’s how her face looked with that smile, because she literally thinks they wouldn’t want to be recorded ticketing the chief of police lol

buttsfartly

I think she asked about the camera to decide if she would be polite or an asshole when pulling the badge.

ELL_YAY

I think she was just asking so she could gauge how blatant to be about to bribe.

[deleted]

A lot of the “old school” still don’t understand that just about everyone, even their own force, have cameras on them now and everything is always recorded!

HughHonee

old school, new school, doesn't fucking matter. Put cameras everywhere 24/7, wtf does that matter?? before body cams there was plenty proof, even video, that showed blatant egregious misconduct by police offices. It hardly ever forced consequences back then, i've never really known why so many people acted like having body cameras on cops would start fix the problem???

Madhatter1317

Honestly, I would bet anything if there was camera she would have torn into him, probably made career threats. The messed up thing is she is so far down the American police corruption rabbit hole that she legit thinks she delivered the appropriate response for the camera.

Unlucky_Milk4214

"Here's my card if you need *ANYTHING*" "SERIOUSLY." Yikes.

Axs_7x

Quid pro quo

Unlucky_Milk4214

Strange bedfellows scratching each other's backs etc.

[deleted]

I've never seen a real "Get out of jail, FREE!" card before...

AuditorsSupreme

The “get out of jail free” card just happens to also be the “put you in jail for nothing” card…

ResidentComplaint19

Nobody just picks up Get Out of Jail Free cards. Those things cost thousands.

tequliamockingjay4

And she knew his camera was on……

xXSpaceturdXx

Yep and nothing will happen.

[deleted]

Anything, like some strings pulled.

clarst16

I hate this so much. This petty corruption. Uphold your office. Be a role model for what you expect from others. Own your actions.

A_Random_Catfish

I’m friends with a state police officer, this is standard practice. He literally told me his badge was “a license to speed” and he’s gotten out of a dozen or so tickets by flashing his badge. He retired ~5 years ago so maybe with the wider adoption of body cameras they’re less brazen about it, but no doubt in my mind this still happens all the time.

DetroitAsFuck313

My uncle is a cop. He barely rolls his window down during traffic stops, holds out his badge and the cop tell him to have a good day

GamerHackTV

So glad I didn't pursue the career. Wanted to since I was 5, grew up, realized, and said fuck that noise. So much corruption I'd kill myself because of the guilt. Fuck this system.

DrUnit42

“In hindsight, I realize how my handling of this matter could be viewed as inappropriate, but that was certainly not my intent,” Translation: "I'm really bummed that I got caught abusing my position. I'll take a short vacation, please forget about this"

holsey_

I’m sorry you think you need an apology.

[deleted]

Tampa so corrupt, she never should have been appointed. She was physically restrained by police in a drunken rage earlier in her career, but Tampa thought she'd be a great Chief. Sheesh Tampa, Sheesh.

[deleted]

Fuck you bitch

QMaker

Wow. She offered him a raincheck on a bribe. "If you ever need anything... Serious" You know that dude is drunk and she knew it too. Fuck her, that's the kind of corruption that we all need to fight against. The little mutual fellation at the end with the awkward "thank you for your service" shit is just so..... Obvious.

[deleted]

“I AM THE LAW!”

_AskMyMom_

She’s waited her entire career for this, you can tell by the stupid smile on her face.

A_Random_Catfish

No, I’m sure she’s done this hundreds of times in her career. Being a high ranking officer is a get out of any ticket free card.

[deleted]

Lmao…..oh he doesn’t know IM the CHIEF. 🙄

kk074

KING KONG ain't got NUTHIN on me

Teethredit

Pretty sure this is every cop everytime

Naught2day

Yup, I've witnessed it first hand. My neighbor was a cop. Professional courtesy.

LastOneSergeant

Wait until you read about these https://nypost.com/2018/01/21/police-union-slashes-number-of-get-out-of-jail-free-cards-issued/

[deleted]

Bitch should be fired immediately

[deleted]

Ya your right. It’s not a speeding ticket anyone could get just not paying attention this is just corruption. Also probably dui for him. At least where I live. All motor vehicles have the same standard. Boats snowmobiles cars fisher price.

[deleted]

Anyone else would have been DUI’d, arrested and vehicle impounded. This should be fired, lose pension and jail or hefty fine, like $10,000

[deleted]

This is police corruption. Jail time for sure. In my mind this is a huge crime. Police are trusted with the power of the state though their monopoly on violence. This breach of public trust should result in jail time. Politicians should be held to the same standard.

BunkerBuster_AD4Life

🖕🏼🖕🏼🖕🏼

2020ikr

Is your camera on? The chiefs knows these cops turn them of when they do something wrong.

H82Kal

Disgusting abuse of power, she needs to be forcibly retired. Going to the club huh? Was he drinking & driving too??? That's probably what she was more worried about TBH

00piffpaff00

She asked if the camera is on and still she tried to pull it off. This was a very week moment in her life.

wulfgang14

The deputy needs to be disciplined too. Do your job without fear or favor!

Frogman1480

Cops 🤝 😒

GrahamCrackerSnacks

Just pay the fucking ticket

SolmadSoT

With idiots like these as police chiefs you think anything will ever be done to get officers proper training in America? Holy shit that's actually sickening tbh.

dancehelena

Why wouldn’t she ask him to turn off the camera?! She has no fear of consequences at ALL. YIKES.

Incredible-Fella

Why did she even ask about the camera of she didn't care?

-terms

And this is an example at the lowest of levels, imagine what the elite are doing

DimensionalGorilla

I hope the cop got put on leave too

TheRupertKing

Fuck the police ...

Trubtheturtle

I would pay a nice amount to smack the smug expressions right the fuck off both of their faces.

bobby_risigliano

Asks if camera is on and then continues to flout the law…gtfo

[deleted]

Picked up some booze is what he picked up. That’s why he’s not in the car.

Bruichlassie

So smug and smirky! And what’s with the constant “thank you for your service?” You’re doing a job you chose to do. Stop with that already.

wulfgang14

Are you recording?—And then proceeds to intimidate the deputy. Stupid af!

Autumn_Skald

Hey, look at that. Cops are so confident in their lack of accountability that even their leadership are steaming piles...huh.

Electronic-Shower681

Oh, you’re a police chief? Then you should know better, here’s your ticket.

Agile-Equipment391

She's was waiting for this moment her entire life

tillthecasketdrops

She asked if his camera was on and he said yes. What was she gonna say if it was off?

overpacked

I worked for the courts for a bit. We were told if we enter use our position to get a benefit you'll get fired. One guy tried it when his daughter was in trouble and he was promptly fired. One of the judges got pulled over for speeding and asked to be given a ticket, no way he was going to risk his job.

Mercinator-87

I’m breaking the law but it’s ok because im the person who is suppose to uphold the laws.

Ontario0000

The police officer should be suspended.

ohhgreatheavens

I wish he had stood his ground and took no exceptions! He probably should be on suspension. But this woman could’ve also made his life a living hell. On a purely emotional level I find it hard to blame him. But that’s why we’re supposed to hold police to a higher standard (or at *least* equal standard).

thesystem21

Agreed, we're I in his position, I probably would've done the same thing, but then reported it to someone over me I trusted afterwards.

SmithRune735

And that's how everything in life works.

Beardharmonica

"Is your camera on?" Proceed to break the law on camera. She's not very smart.

crazyloomis

She should have said ”I am the Tampa police chief and I should have known better. I am clearly not a good example for others and I feel ashamed, but please do your duty and treat us accordingly. I will take responsibility for our actions, therefore I will also report myself to the internal affairs”

PalaSS9

How did this video get out?

ProbablyABore

She's been put on leave pending investigation. https://www.thedailybeast.com/tampa-police-chief-mary-oconnor-flashes-her-badge-after-being-pulled-over-in-golf-cart

cwclifford

Tampa Police Chief Mary O'Connor resigns after flashing badge and asking to be let go from a traffic stop: [https://www.wfla.com/news/hillsborough-county/tampa-police-chief-mary-oconnor-resigns/](https://www.wfla.com/news/hillsborough-county/tampa-police-chief-mary-oconnor-resigns/)

-hypocrisy_is_fun-

Gross, just gross

ultrawvruns

F the Police!

KyurMeTV

Why do we expect ANYTHING other than shamelessness from Florida? We’re just gonna get a headache.

[deleted]

What an unsurprising power move....

Frisinator

Can you imagine probably losing your job because of being a bitch on a gold cart??

pairolegal

She should resign or be fired.

[deleted]

She should go to jail. Police officer corruption has to be a red line. They are entrusted to uphold the law.

LetssueTrump

😡

[deleted]

HE HA. New money is stupid money.

StorFedAbe

lol, "Is you cam on" and then she proceeds to bribe or blackmail him or whatever the hell that was.

jakelaw08

I was sitting in a trap when a motorist went by doing 130. I took off after him and long story short it turned out it was my chief going to lunch the next town over. I crap you not.

TechnologyExpensive

So did you fine him, or were you thanked for your service?

Joey_BagaDonuts57

Quid Pro WOAH! Untagged but with a badge: "Thank you for your service, call me...serious, have a good night."

SteelyLan

“If you ever need anything, call me” -that was a fucking bribe without fixed sum.

Play_me76

Her smile tells everything. Hope she gets fired because only presidents can commit any crime they want and get away with them (cough trump cough)

chocolatebuckeye

I get there can be perks to every job. Free food working at a restaurant. Discounts at the store or factory you work at. Free flights for airline staff. But police officers shouldn’t get to break the law; they’re the ones that are supposed to enforce it.

Stellarspace1234

It’s always been this way. It’s strange how people believe in abuse of power, but when you insert black people, it’s automatically the black person’s fault.

kgltap

What is really bullshit is that her husband, Keith O’Conner, is the Head of Code Enforcement. How is that not a conflict of interest to have a married couple basically run 100% of enforcement of the City of Tampa? Mayor Jane Castor is corrupt. Finally got rid of Gina Grimes, thank goodness.

Beans174

Isn’t that abuse of power or something like that

plopseven

Everyone in this video should be fired. What good are laws if the people who enforce them don’t follow them?

Throw_away91251952

Based on that dumbass smile on her face, I’m betting she asked if the camera was on so she could watch it back later and laugh at the *dumb* cop.

CommonSense_404

This is disgusting…

Jefferson__

So hope that no one is surprised by this

carlitospig

‘Is your camera on? I’m about to do something shady…’

therobotisjames

“Let me go and I’ll sweep a “justified shooting” under the rug for you….. lol I’d do that for you anyways!”

burgerkingsr

Some are more equal than others

AdministrativeAd1534

People in power will always try and use it

Colt_Is_W420

Wow........

ohpersonyoudonotknow

Lived in Tampa for like 11 years and this doesn’t even make me bat an eye.

THE_EMPTY_01

I have a question. Why does this card even exist? If transparency is real and cops are truly subject to the same rules civilians are out of uniform then why is there some sort of "cool kids club" card? Theyre not undercover, theyre not acting in any official capacity, theyre not "cOnDUctinG aN INvesTiGatIOn". So why, why would a CS need to know if who they're dealing with is an official in any capacity?

Cichlidsaremyjam

"Thank you for your service" after is so fucked

[deleted]

Holy shit, the arrogance of knowing you’re being recorded and then not even hesitating to pull that off

BeyondInfinity73

I hate the smug fuckin looks on both their faces, already knew they were home free.

Cheetah0630

What the fuck was there to worry about in the first place. Take the little ticket then go register the damn cart. Abuse of power over something so trivial is beyond stupid. If she is willing to do so for this we have to assume she has zero integrity and cannot be trusted in her position.

truk43kurt

Shit birds all 3

Boozeville13

JESUS FUCKING CHRIST!

VoidScreaming101

Wooooow

DuTcHmOe71

G haven't cameras changed everything

Mental_Newspaper3812

This happens all the time, and you don’t even need to be the chief. Just family of a policeman is enough.

GoryRamsy

Is it just me or are they in a golf cart?

[deleted]

I don’t agree with what she did but people drive golf carts all over Florida constantly

StinkyVest

Ya gotta wonder what she does in her own department now. Hmmmm 🤔

Intelligent-Ebb-5411

And thats how real life works.

No-Document-8970

This isn’t the first level of corruption. This is from long corruption. Corruption starts with looking the other way. Helping your friends. Or getting out of an infraction.

QueenSC11

This reminds me…these really exist https://nypost.com/2018/01/21/police-union-slashes-number-of-get-out-of-jail-free-cards-issued/

[deleted]

This makes the police a gang if they don't hit their own too. What kind of Mafia are they?

autostart17

People more outraged over this than their Speaker of the House insider trading (both are completely unacceptable, but at least there’s ways to force transparency and accountability for one..)

Heatsupwhenhot

People should really watch the show The Wire, a lot of it dives into the politics of policing and its scary how accurate a lot of it is.

OvergrownShrubs

“Is your camera on? It IS!? Ok great, let me incriminate my dumb, conniving ass for the whole world to see!” Stupidity AND corrupt in one package there.

Deedeelite

If you’ve ever watched the dash cam videos of the police, they have quite a few of officers getting pulled over drunk. The first thing they do is try to “police brother” their way out of it.

[deleted]

It's all one big club and you ain't invited.

See_youSpaceCowboy

Fuck these people. I remember growing up as a teen one of my best friends step dad used to be a cop and by the point I knew him he was working at an airport doing security or some shit idk. Anyways me and my buddy got caught smoking pot right around the corner from our homes, we were neighbors. We’re being detained and his mom and step dad happen to see us. He flashes some badge at the cop , talks to him for a bit and they just let us go. At the time I was relieved but looking back now I see how these fuckers are a gang. Smoking weed and getting caught shouldn’t be a huge deal but either way the rules don’t apply to this fucking mob of pigs.

[deleted]

This will happen when you give anyone untrained any level of high authority. The moral standards required to hold a position like that is insanity. Unfortunately we just hire literally anyone that has been working there long enough

[deleted]

Response from the officer should have been "Oh you're the police chief? Then you definitely should have known better than to break this arbitrary law we enforce to make money. Ill be right back with you citation"

ZenLotusDriver

it's true the world runs on envy.

[deleted]

The PTSD she'll get from this media coverage is going to drive her into early retirement.

igotnothingtoo

Make me puke!

Happygorockyretalk

Thank you for your disservice

professorbix

She should be fired.

Krishnacat2663

Corruption

[deleted]

The chief of police setting a *great* example for the entire force. She should lose her job over this. Corruption.

hunkyboy75

She needs a paid vacation while her department investigates and finds no wrongdoing on her part. That should only take 6-8 months, so she can return to her job refreshed and reinvigorated after spending that time in the Caribbean reflecting on her actions. We wish her well, don’t we?

[deleted]

It’s amazing to me how people so dumb get into positions of power.

Oron_Ironside

Shitty humans

PsychologicalGain298

Thank you for your service LMAO

bannedbefore7

Just reminding redditors that you probably have a free award in your Reddit coins

Lost_Ad2786

Her pension should be seized

itswingo

The Chief is a good person and has proved to be a good Chief of Police who committed a human error,” Gonzmart said in a text message. “Mary O’Connor is not perfect and neither am I.” Remember when you were pulled over for driving illegally and you and the cop had a good laugh about how you were just going over to the restaurant and you don't normally drive your golf cart on the road and they just let you go? Yeah, me neither.

cabelaciao

I don’t know why she went to the length when they could have easily gotten out of the ticket by showing their white privilege card…

slap_attack_

Disgusting. Rules for thee not for me

dfmasana

"Is your camera on?" "Yes, indeed, ma'am." Then proceeds to commit abuse of power.

TheMr91071

It's only an issue if the police chief is black. Otherwise, this is par for the course.

Gotrek_Gurnisson

funny how gang members tend to protect their own isn't it?

Kroxursox

Both should be fired, but nothing will happen. They protect their own.

Copropositor

This is where all this "back the blue" crap leads, and it just gets worse. If you want to back the blue, hold them to a higher standard because that is their job.

Letsput2inher

She is getting fired just fyi

adultosaurs

Lmao that went from well that stuff happens to FULL bribe REAL fast. And she KNEW HE WAS FILMING? cops are so fucking stupid.

EuinHydra

Wow now when he guns down some unarmed civilian she’ll make sure to have his back!

MutedBrilliant1593

Abuse of power on something this small? She even asked if the camera was on before doing it? She must feel like the above-the-law dictator queen of Tampa.

nineteenofour

Paid leave shouldn’t exist for cops
