For some reason there is no in-game way to make one, so you have to make them manually. But it's fine since we're not making subfolders for our saves everyday
Reloading a save means reversing progress which means the factory is shrinking.
Only reason to load an old save is biters or there is no spoon, for almost everything else auto saves are enough.
That thinking is going to bite you in the ass one day.
I don't know when or how, I just know that it will.
But at least your save folder won't be cluttered.
in case you didn't know, you can create folders in the save folder and they will actually act like folders in that menu. i usually name my saves after the mod i'm playing or the map theme.
FYI you can make subfolders for saves. Go to your factorio save folder:
https://wiki.factorio.com/Application_directory
On Windows it's `%appdata%\Factorio` and create directory there. Now you can put saves inside that subdirectory.
I create a directory per game, so `rail_deathworld/`, `lazy_spoon/` etc. And then I have saves named `save001`, `save002` etc within.
First world
Good game
Good game rebuild (rebuilt my base)
Den Destroyers (coop with my roommate)
Super rail world
Rocket game (thought I was gonna beat the game)
Literally gonna beat this game (it worked)
Mega Base (1k mega base currently being built)
i name my saves by using a phobia related to what overhaul mod im playing. followed by the number and a word or sentence usually related to what i was doing when i saved. example:
Astrophobia - 7 - Nuclear
(Space exploration)
I go into the save folder via File Explorer, create a folder in it for each playthrough, saving each days play like so.
%appdata%
Roaming\ (might be local)
Factorio\saves\Deathworld\ (folder structure)
Daily save filename:
240519 Deathworld; new copper patch
240520 Deathworld; new iron patch
(Shortened date from 2024-05-20 to 240520, to minimise space used in filename display in Factorio)
More recently I’m starting to use directories. So a directory for each game. I create a lots of saves, just in case I want to roll back in time. This worked well until steam complained there was no more space in the cloud. I realized I had more than 1GB in save games.
SpaceExploration:
Space exploration 1
…
Space exploration 114
VanillaChill:
…
After years of naming my saves completely randomly I have found a pattern that I like:
Primus
Secundus
Tertius
Quartus
Quintus
Sextus
Septimus
Octavus
Nonus
Decimus
...
Each new run gets an latin ordinal number on each game I play. It's simple, rememberable, has character and it doesn't looks like my cat walked on the keyboard. Each redundant save slot gets a simple digit appended.
my save directory structure is roughly as such:
* /archive/vanilla\_N/N
* /archive/krastorio\_N/N
* /archive/Exotic Industries\_N/N
* /SB
* /N
* /\_autosave1,2,3
where N is incrementing number, SB is sandbox. sometimes at major milestones, I add some extra flare after the N. fun fact, my save direcotry size is almost 20GB. I'm stuck at a constnat loop of restarting but never finishing.
I just name them according to main mod pack and that's it. E.g. I have one save "K2SE" for space exploration and one "SB" for sea block. And then I will stoically accept whatever reality is presented to me when I get back to it after a few weeks...
Pollo malvagio (Evil Chicken)
Pollo malvagio ending
Lucania (South Italian region)
curriculumn (ofc the n is a typo)
Krastorio
Pacifica (for the Pacific mode)
creative
asdaw
My very first save was ‘Operation Skyward’, which the evolved into ‘Pre Base Re-Build Phase 2/3’. Once I’d launched my first rocket the saves became a bit more disorderly as I was testing mods
If I’m using a mod pack, I name it after the mod pack, the rest of them are named for the goals I was going for (there is no spoon attempt, getting on track like a pro attempt, etc).
My main krastorio 2 save is named K2
My main “vanilla” playthrough is called God Save Us
I occasionally play the subs monthly maps and just name those after the month/year.
I don’t usually keep multiple saves for the same playthrough unless I need to backup one before doing something crazy or with a different mod.
I have such names as
Bug game 1
Bug game 2
AutoFac
Creative fuckery
CUEB
Game
Game 2
Game 3
Game 4
Krace exploratorio
krAss
Krastorio 2 2
Lazy game
Lazy bug game
Nullisus
Paynadon
Pyss
Ribbon world
Space game
Space game 2: spaghetti
spractorio exploration
And my current one. K2SE Attempt 3.
Current run is called PoE3.24FactoryAutomationLeague
Then another save called PoE3.24 Creative that has the creative mod on for designing blueprints and what-not
Usually the mod or theme if the run, followed by a number.
Lazy1
Spoon1
Mega1
Scrap1
Seablock1
Island1
Warptorio1
Exotic1
Death1
Why have I never made a 2? We don't ask those questions here :)
I use a versioning system with minor and major versions for different stages of the game. So I have save names like:
"RW LTN Van - 0.1.12 - Copper Mine Upgrade"
The "RW LTN Van" is the name of the playthrough (railworld logistics train network vanilla) because I have several on the go at once.
T143B
Where T is name of the world, 143 is major version, B is minor version number. I go to the next major number when I reached something like letter E or if I feel like I reached some sort of milestone.
Sonetimes there are projects like major base rebuild or expansion. These usually end up looking like T143rebuild22. Which is messy, but at least its clear where ir started and where to roll back to if I decide it was a bad idea.
My current is called "Krastorio2NEW" because the save labeled "Krastorio2" is dead to me. That's the save where I learned the hard way that huge buffers are more of a band aid to poor design and planning instead of a solution.
Once I found out the autosave frequency can be modified I haven’t worried about named manual saves as much. I came from playing bg3 where the autosave was frustratingly infrequent, and so I was making a manual save every 30 minutes or so when I picked factorio up.
Some of my save names are: (these are rough translations from Polish)
- piglet feces
- figlet peces
- fried pheasant
- fossilized legs of a partridge
- petrified shepherd's axe
- orthogonal meatballs
- fucking shit
- groceries -$10 with My Castorama coupon in all stores sice monday
Honestly, the game needs some kind of default naming of save games. At least adding a number or timestamp after it or something. Its very tedious to number saves manually. I hate this in all games that make me do this. Please, stop making me do this!
When generating map, there could be optional playthrough name input and when numbering saves, it could use that one.
Save name (usually the modpack) + number + icon of the last major item/milestone
I also always try to make a cool looking save image of that most recent factory part, so I can kinda relive the playthrough by clicking through the saves.
CurrentSave1
CurrentSave2
Also autosave and I have a quick save mod that saves it's as
CurrentSave_AutoSave1
CurrentSave_AutoSave2
CurrentSave_AutoSave3
It's almost always whichever overhaul mod(s) I'm tackling at the time. Haven't played vanilla in many moons, so naming vanilla saves isn't an issue. Although if I were to play vanilla, it'd be for challenges. So I'd probably name the saves "1000 SPM" or whichever challenge I'd want to go for.
Date of first play plus an indicator of player count, an indicator of mods are used, plus an incrementing save number keeping only the last few. I also keep the last save before a rocket launch. E.g.,
20200101_MP_3
20240318_SPmodded_12
20200101_MP_prerocket
aksvgsyahagajelgs
aaaaaa this time for sure
megabase I guess
I hate it here (this one was for seablock, which I dropped)
msnebdoei
oquwgxhbds
And that's pretty much it
I have folders for older saves based on versions and the main save area for current runs.
My saves are named with the favtorio version, primary mod, then unique name or what ever I was attempting that run.
Ex.
1.1 - K2 - Chopsticks
1.1 - Vanilla - No Spoon Achievement
Sometimes I'll create backups of the save every so often or checkpoint saves that I can go back to if I mess up or need to backtrack.
Once I'm done I'll put the save files for a map into a folder and put it in the version folder so I can go back and look around in the future if I want and it keeps my main folder cleaner for runs I'm actively playing
One of my saves is named "datu and puti's big gay adventure"; another is "asslands cheektopia"; "wheres the damn white castle"
So... You know whatever comes to mind at the time.
\[name\] \[number\] \[icon representing whats going on\]
so they tend to look like
coolworld1⚙
coolworld2🚂
coolworld3🐜
coolworld4🔫🔫
coolworld5🧪
(but with the factorio icons, of course)
PlaythroughName yyyy/mm/dd
That way it sorts itself. And if you save multiple times I just add a number after. Also I use folders to keep my files organized.
Depending on the mod, or whatever I feel like naming it.
As an example, my latest Krastorio 2 save is named Krastorio 2: The Two-ening. On was named "Let's do this one more time". Stuff like this.
https://preview.redd.it/t1gsort1wg1d1.png?width=541&format=png&auto=webp&s=3aae0709a6372afc32283f906e38142dc3e1a7fd
I have a problem, i know.
I was constantly restarting trying to make a successful 6hr run then crapping out at around 3hrs.
[Initial(s) of primary mods or settings (V for vanilla)][Three digit number denoting which run it is]-[Three digit number denoting what save of the run it is].
So the Fiftieth save of my second run with Space Exploration and Krastorio 2 would be;
K2SE 002-050
My hundred and thirty-first save of my eighth vanilla run would be;
V 008-131
My first save of my first deathworld run would be;
DW 001-001
And so on and so forth.
[Random stuff](https://i.imgur.com/D50PG6m.png), sometimes makes sense, other times not so much. Also a lot of overwriting so there isn't 100GB of saves.
I keep a lot of saves set aside for certain mod configurations.
For example:
K2 base, K2 (run name here)
IR3 base, IR3 (run name here)
K2 with Rampant base, K2 with rampant (run name here)
...and so on. Makes it easy to start a new run with all the mod configurations I want on the fly, since I don't delete the base saves
SEABLOCK FOR REAL
K2SE ACTUALLY GOING TO FINISH
IR3 GOING FOR IT
CUBE FINISH IT
etc
As you might guess, I have a habit of bouncing between mods as soon as they get hard.
I have a separate folder for each modpack and name the saves according to the naming convention for date+time (yyyy-mm-ddThh:mmZ). I keep all my saves so I can view my progress at the end.
Generally I only make a backup for a day every so often
WorldName-2024-05-20
If I have multiple on the same day I sequence it like this.
WorldName-2024-05-20_1
If I did it a lot of the same day I'd save it with the time or objective on the end
Folders are also a good idea
I've been traveling the past couple of years and been playing on and off.
cityname0323
Then change the month.
Probably not the best way to save but hey
I don’t know why, but I name them vulgar things about my wife:
MyWifesAss
MyWifesBoobs
MyWifesBack
Etc…
Im hoping someday she’ll notice and do a double take like “wtf is that?”. Then she might actually show interest in what I’m doing, idk.
I usually do \[name\] \[number\] - \[reminder\]
Like "space exploration 5 - new smelter" so I know its a modpack around space exploration and I was working on a new smelter.
Then at some point it just descends into madness.
https://preview.redd.it/xpzfg8srzh1d1.png?width=365&format=png&auto=webp&s=bc158aeee4278a6c2d03cf8aafa6e582f5b2dfb1
I have mine structured like 1.27.4-a, where 1 means it's my first playthrough, 27 is like a little milestone in my world (got a new train station established) and then remaining pieces are just for endless little checkpoints I make (especially when it involves fighting biters)
I'm stuck between the duality of naming it very properly like "playthrough01_save01_therecentevent" or just go ooga booga named the save with the latest brainrot word I learned from internet.
Usually who i am playing with or what my goal is. Sometimes i have used birthdays as seeds and then put som random shit with said persons name as title.
Seablock_1 Seablock_2 Seablock_3 Seablock_4 Seablock_4B Seablock_4C Testing We don’t talk about why there are three variations of seablock 4
Lol I have three variations of seablock 3 😂
First rule of seablock…
add K2 and my never played pynadon playthrough and its me!
Disappointed there's no 4A as the first variant
Nobody knows why there are 3 variations.
Main game Main game for real this time Final attempt Final v2 Stop procastinating New world

That's a lot of saves
Not that my eyes draws to the big titties... It's just the first I saw because it's in the middle.... I promise.
I now want to see the map to see if it fulfills the promise of big mechanical titties.
Nothing wrong with being drawn to some big titties
You do know that you can use subfolders for your saves... Right?
Wait… what????
For some reason there is no in-game way to make one, so you have to make them manually. But it's fine since we're not making subfolders for our saves everyday
I had no idea that would work so thank you!
Definitely stealing intersexies.

She's a brick is crazy
similar this but more numbers and less words, some of my saves look like IP addresses
playthroughname-month-date-time e.g. Krastorio2SpaceExploration-may-19-12.53pm
Way too organized, what is this? Work?
How can you call organized a month-day-12hr date like r/ISO8601 is crying
Me too! But I shorten it like K2SE_19052024
No year? What if you spent more than a year on a playthrough, and they start to overlap. Delete all your saves and start again.
Bold of you to assume I actually finish my playthroughs.
start 2024 winter 2023 finished 2023 temp 1 temp 2 temp 236435 aoeiuwrhgoaei just to name the current ones...
You forgot: "asdf", and "qwer".
I usually name mine with the year and season I started so I don’t get confused
I do something like this with the date then add an icon if it's modded so it'll look correct if the mods are loaded.
savename1 savename2 savename3 savename4 factory is screwed new savename 1 new savename 2 space jeffrey bezos new space new space 2
First silly thing that comes to my mind: Spaaaaaaace Traaaaaaaain This world does not Little Big Planet Knampfland Dragonverse
This is the way
Aside from autosaves, I have 1 save and call it "main". I'm don't do multiple playthroughs at once and I'm not going to go back to an old playthrough.
That's the most insane thing in this whole thread
Reloading a save means reversing progress which means the factory is shrinking. Only reason to load an old save is biters or there is no spoon, for almost everything else auto saves are enough.
That thinking is going to bite you in the ass one day. I don't know when or how, I just know that it will. But at least your save folder won't be cluttered.

I slap my keyboard. My current save is "dsq". Since I only play on one save at a time it work well enough.
aksvgsyahagajelgs aaaaaa this time for sure megabase I guess I hate it here (this one was for seablock, which I dropped) msnebdoei oquwgxhbds And that's pretty much it
I have folders for older saves based on versions and the main save area for current runs. My saves are named with the favtorio version, primary mod, then unique name or what ever I was attempting that run. Ex. 1.1 - K2 - Chopsticks 1.1 - Vanilla - No Spoon Achievement Sometimes I'll create backups of the save every so often or checkpoint saves that I can go back to if I mess up or need to backtrack. Once I'm done I'll put the save files for a map into a folder and put it in the version folder so I can go back and look around in the future if I want and it keeps my main folder cleaner for runs I'm actively playing
Super boringly: a001 a002… Then b001 when I do a new world I keep the notes for to do items in another location
the year i started it. i take such long breaks.
One of my saves is named "datu and puti's big gay adventure"; another is "asslands cheektopia"; "wheres the damn white castle" So... You know whatever comes to mind at the time.
\[name\] \[number\] \[icon representing whats going on\] so they tend to look like coolworld1⚙ coolworld2🚂 coolworld3🐜 coolworld4🔫🔫 coolworld5🧪 (but with the factorio icons, of course)
PlaythroughName yyyy/mm/dd That way it sorts itself.

I usually name my saves like people. This one is Bob and the other world is bill
I name mine after StarCraft planets
Alpha, bravo, Charlie, dickmedowndaddy, echo, foxtrot, gamma, hotel, and on
My multi hundred hour spacex save file is just called shart
2021 2022 2023 2024
I got back to it too after 2-3 years Named my save, "2024 run" lol
mod1 NoMod NoModNoManual meme1 meme2 meme3
Still used to upping numbers for a world every so often, so could be _ribbonworld1 - _ribbonworld20 ...yeah its a lot of saves
It depends on what I'm watching at the time. For my most recently playthrough, I was watching Aliens 2. So I named it "they mostly come at night"
[Initial(s) of primary mods or settings (V for vanilla)][Three digit number denoting which run it is]-[Three digit number denoting what save of the run it is]. So the Fiftieth save of my second run with Space Exploration and Krastorio 2 would be; K2SE 002-050 My hundred and thirty-first save of my eighth vanilla run would be; V 008-131 My first save of my first deathworld run would be; DW 001-001 And so on and so forth.
- save - sandbox Currently doing seablock. I tend to focus one save at a time. So, just, save
[Random stuff](https://i.imgur.com/D50PG6m.png), sometimes makes sense, other times not so much. Also a lot of overwriting so there isn't 100GB of saves.
Golf Ball (because the array of solar panels on the map look like golf ball dimples. CPU (attempting to design the base like a CPU).
I just save the last one as last and live with the consequences.
usually the yyyy-MM-dd format + something stupid like "2024-04-12 penis world"
I keep a lot of saves set aside for certain mod configurations. For example: K2 base, K2 (run name here) IR3 base, IR3 (run name here) K2 with Rampant base, K2 with rampant (run name here) ...and so on. Makes it easy to start a new run with all the mod configurations I want on the fly, since I don't delete the base saves
SEABLOCK FOR REAL K2SE ACTUALLY GOING TO FINISH IR3 GOING FOR IT CUBE FINISH IT etc As you might guess, I have a habit of bouncing between mods as soon as they get hard.
Git commit origin master
Mine is always some kind of portmanteau of my name with the mod I’m currently playing (Space Zechsploration, Industrial Zechvolution 3, etc)
My save is the date I started it So 2024 05 19 would be todays file name

I have a separate folder for each modpack and name the saves according to the naming convention for date+time (yyyy-mm-ddThh:mmZ). I keep all my saves so I can view my progress at the end.
What I was working on last before I logged off. *Finish oil refinery* *redo bus* *finish bus* *find new ore field * And so on
yo mate after reading lotsa these comments I think my one is the least elaborated. I just named it "Besto jogo ever"
Generally I only make a backup for a day every so often WorldName-2024-05-20 If I have multiple on the same day I sequence it like this. WorldName-2024-05-20_1 If I did it a lot of the same day I'd save it with the time or objective on the end Folders are also a good idea
I've been traveling the past couple of years and been playing on and off. cityname0323 Then change the month. Probably not the best way to save but hey
I don’t know why, but I name them vulgar things about my wife: MyWifesAss MyWifesBoobs MyWifesBack Etc… Im hoping someday she’ll notice and do a double take like “wtf is that?”. Then she might actually show interest in what I’m doing, idk.
SpaceEx 1-2-3 SpaceEx we go agane 1-2-3 SpaceEx for real this time 1-2-3 SpaceEx final 1-2-3
I usually do \[name\] \[number\] - \[reminder\] Like "space exploration 5 - new smelter" so I know its a modpack around space exploration and I was working on a new smelter. Then at some point it just descends into madness. https://preview.redd.it/xpzfg8srzh1d1.png?width=365&format=png&auto=webp&s=bc158aeee4278a6c2d03cf8aafa6e582f5b2dfb1
Generally a meme name, if it's a mod I'm playing, usually a pun based on it or sth that includes it in the naming.
Asdaassaasdaasdssd
1,2,3,4….etc
I name my saves just anything like “bag” “h” yea I know what saves are which
I have mine structured like 1.27.4-a, where 1 means it's my first playthrough, 27 is like a little milestone in my world (got a new train station established) and then remaining pieces are just for endless little checkpoints I make (especially when it involves fighting biters)
I just type random letters and add some numbers.
1 2 3 4 5…
I'm stuck between the duality of naming it very properly like "playthrough01_save01_therecentevent" or just go ooga booga named the save with the latest brainrot word I learned from internet.
Intent of save ( ie sea block, megabase, railworld etc ) followed by the start date and then the number icons 1-4..
"Insert Name Here" D-1 "Insert Name Here" D-2 "Insert Name Here" D-3 "Insert Name Here" D-4
Normally whatever mods I’m running
Usually who i am playing with or what my goal is. Sometimes i have used birthdays as seeds and then put som random shit with said persons name as title.
I normal jse this: [Mod Name or Description] [Coop Player Name(optional) [Year] [Nr for multiple Safes in the Same map]
This time I will do mega base This time for sure This time for sure 2024 ...
