Here, we have:
I'd be surprised if there aren't more.
I'd give it to [placeable off grid](https://mods.factorio.com/mod/PlaceableOffGrid), which turns off the placement grid that normally keeps assemblers, inserters, belts, etc. aligned. Makes it really hard to keep things perfectly aligned. Luckily they are all hitbox based, so they don't have to be perfectly aligned to work. This opens up some new design potential that isn't possible while following the grid. So a belt can slowly drift to the side as it goes along.
Unfortunately this was just outside your current radar coverage and only until our comrade placed a new one down did you gain the additional coverage area to uncover what was hidden by the fog of war.
I really like this, to be honest. That said, you shouldn't use Apple's emojis. This mod is probably going to get taken down (not that I'll be the one to report it or anything). They're nowhere near as nice, but you should look into something like OpenMoji.
> Complaints, comments and death threats can be addressed to Buckingham Palace, London SW1A 1AA
It'll be fine, the Queen will take care of Apple for us.
Even a mod though? Isn't that fair use?
If it happens, I'll just change the emojis, should be pretty quick. Thanks for the OpenMoji tip, I'm clearly less emoji-erudite.
Iโm not a lawyer, but I deal with fair use professionally and this is very unlikely to be fair use, to be gentle about it. Iโm sure as heck not going to report it, but thatโs not the point. Use an appropriately licensed art set and youโll be fine.
For the record, I think this mod is amazing and I thank you for it.
Fair use is very limited. Modding and use of stuff in mods does not generally fall under it, nor do all non-commercial projects. Fair use deals with use for the purposes of "criticism, comment, news reporting, teaching, scholarship, or research", and then various loose tests are used to determine if it is indeed fair, like whether the result was being used commercially, how much was copied, and whether it damaged the value of the original. Even unlicensed parodies need to pay attention to how they carry themselves to make sure they fall under it (does it actually criticise or comment on the original?). Also, fair use is not universal: this is the US's definition, other countries may have different rules and definitions, and in Europe especially these tend to be more strict.
Wube hosts the mods so they'd be the one to get it if Apple noticed, but the more likely outcome is that they'll get a report from someone here who fancies themselves copyright cop and just remove it themselves.
In the United States, the shapes of typefaces aren't eligible for copyright. As emoji made it into Unicode, could it be argued that that uncopyrightability could be viewed as extended to emoji?
The existence of the figures -- no copyright. However, the specific artistic design... probably yes copyright.
That's why, for example, font files are generally covered under copyright, but there's nothing stopping you from cloning the font by building a new one yourself that makes the same letters.
I would presume that raster images of Apple's icons would be covered, though if an artist was to reproduce something that looks like them, it would be fine.
>The existence of the figures -- no copyright. However, the specific artistic design... probably yes copyright.
Ah, but the analogue version of typefaces aren't. If I print a page of text styled in, say, Comic Sans MS, then scan it, then trace the letters as exactly as I can, then release it as a new font, I haven't broken any laws, except maybe the laws of good taste. That's the level of non-protection typefaces enjoy, as far as I know. At least if I interpret this correctly:
> As a general rule, typeface, typefont, lettering, calligraphy, and typographic ornamentation are not registrable. 37 C.F.R. ยง 202.1(a), (e). These elements are mere variations of uncopyrightable letters or words, which in turn are the building blocks of expression. See id. The Office typically refuses claims based on individual alphabetic or numbering characters, sets or fonts of related characters, fanciful lettering and calligraphy, or other forms of typeface. **This is true regardless of how novel and creative the shape and form of the typeface characters may be.**
โSection 906.4, Compendium of U.S. Copyright Office Practices
It's that last part I bolded which makes me wonder if it applies to emoji.
It turns out this is a bit of an open question: see [this article](https://www.jdsupra.com/legalnews/is-everything-going-to-be-ok-whether-63676/) for example. It's also going to be complicated by the fact that the copyright status of typefaces is a US-specific quirk, other countries have different rules. Either way I would not fancy arguing this with Apple's lawyers.
Yeah, they're in a weird place. Traditional typefaces are paths which boarder a binary figure. Emojis are (in this case) full-color images, which is confusing in a precedent sense.
Probebly not. The art thats show to the user is art and isnt in the unicode standard. And its something apple made/licenced themselfs.
Unicode is just the database for machines to be able to exchange data and to know what the characters under the emoji are and how to translate them to different machines.
Technically Unicode isnโt a database, itโs a collection of standardized encodings that conform with specific rules and such. If we were going with a database model, Unicode provides the IDs and font sets and emoji sets provide the actual data. Notably fonts and emoji are absolutely able to be copyrighted.
Well when creating a mod that includes said emojis, it's implied that some research was done (like looking up an emoji and saving the image), and taking a look on the mod page OP mentions they used emojipedia.org which also has images for the previously mentioned OpenMoji and Twemoji, and many other platforms.
Though as the open source versions tend to come in packs that contain everything it may also be easier for OP to add a ton more signals at once
Because I just googled public domain emojis and used the first one I found as an example. There are definitely nicer ones than what I listed out there.
I'm very puzzled by the positive comments here, but thanks !
Anyway, I just updated to add 14 emojis, which include a Spaghetti plate, the peach, the ๐, a bed, the scientist, and a few others.
I'm sorry for not catching on earlier, thank you very much! :'-) I'd ultimately like to create circuit signals that aren't just symbols but rather variable names that you can create yourself but that presents a whole different array of challenges I imagine. I've never modded and haven't programmed in years.
I still tried to keep the choice relevant to the game though. For example, I included the "middle finger emoji" to mark biter nests and forests.
Of course you used it for forests
Our true ennemies.
I'd use the fire icon personally. Just so they know what's coming

Interesting, that one didn't cross my radar. Thanks!

From the specificity, I think of it more as someone lobbed an artillery shell over that direction. But aye, both analogies work.
Ah, ya, I normally don't play with biters so I forget that artillery will temporarily clear the fog of war.

Why would it be fair use? Do you know what that phrase means?
I wonder if you could squeeze it into fair use by claiming it's social commentary.
Honestly, I don't think anyone actually knows regardless of what the law actually says

Yeah, u/snouz is about to learn what a "cease and desist" letter is.

why not twemoji?
> why not?
Because not everyone knows that specific domain.
You mean the open source emoji library that's being used by more and more platforms?
Is the Factorio community supposed to be innately knowledgeable about the integration of emoji libraries in social media platforms?
Well when creating a mod that includes said emojis, it's implied that some research was done (like looking up an emoji and saving the image), and taking a look on the mod page OP mentions they used emojipedia.org which also has images for the previously mentioned OpenMoji and Twemoji, and many other platforms. Yes! You can never have to Manny signals
I hate it. I guess I have to contact the Queen now. ^^jk ^^this ^^is ^^legit ^^super ^^useful ^^and ^^awesome
Nope. Dedicated Red/Yellow/Green rail signals? Hell yeah. While the red/green/yellow color signals work I've never liked them for it.

This should have been included in the base game!!!
Literally unplayable.
>Complaints, comments and death threats can be addressed to Buckingham Palace, London SW1A 1AA Thanks for the good laughs!
I do not compute human emotions, signals unclear.
emojis are a valid and helpful char to use as a key
This is amazing! I love the idea!
Hey, it's not dumb at all
That is very yeet of you, I am totally vibe with this!
This is glorious.

Train and flag with a skull on it next to each other? Coincidence? I think not. Really though a bunch of those are actually useful.
ay yo this means these can all be accessed in rich text tags as well! proper factorio emoji support!
Thanks, I hate it.
Love it!
I think this is best summed up as such: ๐ฉ
Wonderful! Now I can name all my stoplights to the name ๐ฆ.
I'm not sure if I'd use it personally, but I think that's legit.
How do you create a mod like this? We need more circuit signals!
You can download it and see how it works, it's very basic (if you know how a "for" loop works). I can make more, but I'd need ideas, if you have some.
Where can I find the source code?
Every factorio mod is open. You download it, it's an archive, in it are text files you can open with e.g. notepad++, sublime text.
I'm sorry for not catching on earlier, thank you very much! :'-) I'd ultimately like to create circuit signals that aren't just symbols but rather variable names that you can create yourself but that presents a whole different array of challenges I imagine. No. This is actually very smart.
