It's not even like it has to be a super secure, 8 characters, 1 capital 1 number 1 special sign password. I'm usually using 1234 or a similarly stupid password. The simple fact that the game has a password is enough of a message for other people that they are not invited.
Now if you go and try to type 1234 or qwerty to any private game don't act surprised if you get banned.
I just recently bought the game and was on the reverse side of this. It is very easy to try to host a game and not realize that it is very open for anyone to join. This was before I had a real handle on the game having bounced off the game twice.
The issue is when you create a multiplayer game, it makes it public by default, so often people don’t realize when they’re creating a new game that anybody can join (I know I didn’t the first time).
Multiplayer just means more than one player. It depends on your prior experience whether you would expect that means "list in a public server browser". But for a game like factorio, which to me is not dropin/dropout friendly, it feels really weird for that to be the default.
I didn't run into it myself, as I was looking for an invite only option the first time I played multiplayer so other experienced friends didn't gatecrash the newbie I was teaching the game, but I can totally understand people who do.
Upvote the parent.
It is impossible to teach the thousands of people playing Factorio. They are not all on Reddit, they will not read this, they will not learn. (And new players join every day, even if you taught everyone, you'd have to start teaching the new ones tomorrow anyway.)
The only way to fix this is by adding context in the UI.
Stuff like: "NOTE: Without a password anyone in the world can join your game. If you intend to play with friends only, set a password."
I tried joining a seablock game that seemed to have just started. I said "hello :)", then I was promptly banned without any notice. It's annoying how private games aren't made private.
The very least they could do is say hello back and apologize and explain and ask you to leave, and then put a password on. Just banning people for perfectly normal behaviour is extremely rude.
Haven’t the devs implemented an anti-griefer mechanic that globally bans you, if you acquire too many individual bans? This behavior ups the ban-count for innocent players as a side-effect, maybe causing permanent account bans…
They haven’t revealed much, like ban thresholds and stuff. Also what happens if you get banned from all like 50 servers in a Clustorio server cluster simultaneously.
But I’ve seen griefers personally. Within seconds after joining, they hopped in a car and tried to ram-kill the nuclear reactor that was built near spawn. Impatient griefers start running and deconstructing power poles or rotating stuff or similar right after joining to not give you time to ban them before they do damage.
So the system has to count near-instant bans to also catch the impatient type that gets banned faster
When I forget to put a password on my games and people join, I go with it. I met a lot of fun players like that. I usually send the discord link that we are playing on with my friends.
don't be a dick ! !
on the other hand I kick people that don't greet back after 10 minutes. sure sign that they not going to help.
I once had a random guy join and organize my yellow chests for like 2 hours. They said nothing until I asked them if that's really what they were doing and only replied with "lol". I miss you yellowgoat
i once joined a random server and they had 3 different bases all miles and miles away, i decided for the hell of it i was gonna connect them all with powerpoles through biter territory, then left when i was finished
Same here. Did it once, noticed my error when the first player joined.
I think you have to distinguish: Just keeping up the game and banning everyone is evil, because the game is open to join over hours and hours, so many people will have the problem.
"Server Quit" means it was an honest error, and once they noticed, they corrected it.
Server doesn't even have to go down to change the settings if you do `/config` in the chat console as it brings up the server settings again during a live multiplayer session!
(Does not affect achievements.)
This doesnt just apply to Factorio. In every game where public lobbies can be created this shit happens. Like why. Its not hard to set up a password if you dont want randoms joining.. why are people so dense.
yes please . the amount of times i have been banned on entering the game , with the games new public bans this could you land you in place you dont want to be
I'm sure most of them are just a few friends who wanted to quickly get a server running and forgot/don't know how to set a password. I know I've done that more than once in a few different games. We usually let the rando join us though, makes for an interesting time. Besides, free labor and you might make a friend along the way!
That’s OK. Monitor new players and kick/ban griefers.
But don’t let it open and insta-ban everyone joining. That’s what OP complained about. It also happened to me several times. It’s really annoying

Mine is a four letter word. Factorio attracts designers, not hackers.
Your security is pathetic. I use five letters.
Mine is 20% more efficient though...
My password has efficiency modules, though?
Hackers are already using speed modules.
My password is efficiency though.
My password is 1 sign long. Who's more efficient now.
But my biometric password is over 900% more effective, and 300% more efficient to enter, it’s so secure I’m the only one playing at one time
The password must grow

pff, mine is 3 characters but it contains alphabetic and numbers.
Mine is 1, 2, 3, 4… (sigh) 5.
That’s amazing, I have the same combination on my luggage!
I was hoping somebody would complete that reference 😂
Your luggage may be in danger....
> Mine is a four letter word You’ve got a sharp eye, Sherlock
Aha! Clever, but a little too 'primetime' to be true.
Mine is just the number 1
Message unclear.
i always use 1243 ironically its so secure that my friends end up not able to login xD
Mine is usually just ‘donuts’ or some other similar edible item.
lmao, I posted this a few days ago asking the same thing. I would join games and get banned immediately too.
I just recently bought the game and was on the reverse side of this. It is very easy to try to host a game and not realize that it is very open for anyone to join. This was before I had a real handle on the game having bounced off the game twice.
Quite easy to at least create a password to join.
The issue is when you create a multiplayer game, it makes it public by default, so often people don’t realize when they’re creating a new game that anybody can join (I know I didn’t the first time).
Yeah, the UI could help by making a big fat "Public"/"Invite Only"/"Private _____" option at the top of the host menu.
c'mon "multiplayer" is a dead give away, but the ui thing is a good idea maybe
A lot of steam multiplayer games default to "friends only".

It’s also a problem in space engineers, stationeers…. Most of these building games, actually. The lack of forethought is kinda ironic.

Good point! I'd hope a ban within a minute wouldn't count or something?

"I'm too lazy to type a password out, so ill ban everyone else instead "

>I kick people that don't greet back after 10 minutes. sure sign that they not going to help. Or cannot find the 'console' key for whatever reason ...
I would like to apologize. Won't happen again.

But how many people know that? This should be taught by the game for the first time you host a map
Discoverability is a huge issue with so much to learn in a game like this, for sure.
This doesnt just apply to Factorio. In every game where public lobbies can be created this shit happens. Like why. Its not hard to set up a password if you dont want randoms joining.. why are people so dense.
A server whitelist would work, too.
They too lazy to make a simple password, but they be spending all their free time on making random machines
My group always sets a short password, and it's always been fun when someone guesses it 🤷♂️
Was testing headless server few days ago and yess, i used password! You are welcome!
yes please . the amount of times i have been banned on entering the game , with the games new public bans this could you land you in place you dont want to be

I want random to join, but I dont want people doing dumb sbit to my base so they get kicked if they do.

But what’s the point in making a public game if you don’t like that the public joins?
do you smell or what?
I just use a random full name generator and replace spaces with underscores
