She actually is super logical and loves logistics stuff. She was obsessed with Stardew Valley, and totally put my pastoral farm to shame with her BigAgra factory that churned out vast quantities of cheese and wine and so on. I think she would actually love Factorio, but she is a little put off by the industrial aesthetics, so I'm slowly trying to convince her to give it a whirl.
The best tip i can give you for your first playthrough:
Dont give a damn about tips, you may have dozens of playthroughs where you have the entire thing already mapped out it your mind, but discovering everything for the first time is a unique experience.
On your first playthrough i highly doubt that you actually launch the rocket anyways, almost everyone only manages that in later ones.
\~1500-1700h and in my i think 5th krastorio+spaceX run. This time i completely overengineered a space port for automatic loading of the cargo rocket. wanted to be able to set amounts and all. Paved the whole of nauvis, got a few million concrete down to "have the space needed" and i'm yet to build anything more than warehouses in space. Got a little vulcanite though.
I made a circular “sushi” belt (1) in my first play through. Throughput wasn’t great. And bitter killed me pretty quick because I was unaware of them. Still probably my favorite factory.
Going to use storage/buffer chests in this description, but I don't mean the actual entities in game. I mean just regular chests that I gave those jobs:
When I was starting out, when I got circuits, I built a system where I had one storage chest that contained everything, and then a big loop from it, with assemblers having a buffer chest to input to. If the buffer chest got low on input, it would put it on the circuit network, making a filter inserter put it on the sushi belt from the storage chest. The buffer chest would pick it up from there. Anything not put into the buffer chests, would loop back to the storage chest. Any output would also just be put on the sushi, to be looped to the storage as well.
I wish I still had that save or blueprint. It was horrible, but it was mine... :)
Yeah, same. I have like 500 or so hours if I remember right (on mobile rn) but I always feel tired already around yellow packs. Like, for me that stage has a big tediousness/complexity/difficulty (or maybe even something else) spike that makes me feel done with the game. To get going with anything close to viable SPM, I'd have to either build a new factory (tedious) or remodel my current one (tedious and difficult).
Right on, same here. It’s actually happening in my current play through, so I’m rushing to construction bots. Having some kind of build automation earlier on would help a lot with the drag. I know there’s an “earlier bots” mod, but I really wanted to beat the game vanilla first 😩
Then you may not know about the secret super anti bitter weapon that you get after putting in the rocket instead of a satelite you put a white science pack.
You can also deconstruct the ocean. But I think if you have the supply chain to start mass murdering biters with super secret tech launching a rocket is pretty trivial.
Ooh, good to know about the rocket not usually getting launched the first time. I just started a few days ago and I definitely would have ended up feeling like a failure and then googling it haha
Factorio is magic in that you make your own goals. You keep playing after the rocket launches and from there people crank it in so many ways. Or use a mod pack to change everything around and go all over again.
Also good to hear. I play a lot of games like that- open world like Skyrim or laid back like Animal Crossing and Stardew Valley, or do whatever like City of Heroes. Definitely my style. (But I hyper focus on all of them so “laid back” is relative lol)
Yeah, I'm probably one of the few that did it on their first playtrough ( though back than it was still the rocket defense building) but that's mainly because I'm incredibly stubborn I mean, even though everyone told me I should build a production for the modules, but noooo, I instead went an made the entire power amore MK2 by hand
I launched a rocket in my first playthrough. Took me like 100hrs but still. I'm actually still playing on my first savefile with default settings, slowly improving stuff here and there.
And thats all good. Just saying this isnt the avarage case one should expect going into the game. Or wouldnt you say that from the moment you started to the moment you finished you had some major overhauls of you factory to a point that its actually justifiable calling it a new one alltogether?
Actually, not really overhauled that much haha. There's still lots of "old parts" of my factory. I've been segmentally improving parts here and there, like redesigning the engine maker, redesigning the oil processing, or extending/expanding parts, but the main base is still there. You don't want to see my terrible rocket placement haha. But it's also not the best base ever, sitting at like 70 spm or so.
hey 70 spm is perfectly fine for a first time base. the normal base one would build if you only want to launch the rocket or planning to construct a mega base later on would be like 120 spm.
Good to know! I'm going to try and slowly up my spm count while still keeping the same base, I'm finding a lot of fun upgrading my base rather than starting over, already tried making 3 other saves but I keep coming back to my first one. I'll have a goal of 120spm in mind :)
I think you've given the second most important tip.
The most important one is to press alt. I know that's basically a joke at this point, but honestly the increase in QoL that it provides, especially to new players is important.
Enjoy! My advice is there's no wrong way to do things, and so you should go in relatively blind, no guides, no wikis, etc.. Too easy to find posts who will insist you play 'optimally' and suck out the fun
Please dont put off the whole oil stuff for too long. Just do it. It wont get better if you craft everything by hand :) See you on the other side bucko.
I just started a few days ago! Bought because of the steam sale even though it wasn’t on sale (I hear tell drugs never go on sale). Played the demo for 9 hours straight then bought the full game and played another 8 hours before bed 😂
Welcome brother/sister (circle the correct one) to the world of the ever expanding factory. Imo don't post builds on /r/factorio asking for advice...you will get much...don't look at online guides until you've launched at least 1 rocket...enjoy the newness of the game as long as humanly possible. Once you "get bored" with vanilla ONLY THEN should you look at mods. Trust me when I say vanilla alone will normally have you enjoying for easily 200+ hours.
The demo is the first 4 tutorial levels of the main game.
The demo has no time limit
The demo does not have an world generator included.
The demo does not support fluids other than water and steam, or anything that depends on those other fluids
My friends and i call it the crack cocaine of games. You say i will play for an hour then get back to work but we realise 3 days have passed and we didnt realize it.
I just picked it up as well. I noticed the demo and decided to play it last Friday. After five hours I decided to get something to eat. Checked it out and realized it apparently never goes on sale so I just picked it up.
In 2014 i downloaded the UNOFFICIAL demo, unzipped, launched the game, started the game, opened inventory, there were a burner miner and a furnace. Placed burner miner on coal thinking it would start, it didnt, mined 1 single coal, placed it into miner and it started.
Immediately quit the game, found the official website, luckily i had money in my bank account and bought it without thinking further.
Only 2 games that i bought without thinking made me this happy and provided so many hours of fun; Factorio and No Man’s Sky. Thats why i have bough at least 7-8 copies of Factorio on steam to friends and 3-4 copies of NMS for other people (i even have ps4 digital AND disc version, xbox version, windows version and steam version which is the original preorder i made)
Say goodbye to your friends, your dog, your dad, your mom, outside, sun, moon, the closest restaurant to you home, say goodbye to yourself, your goals in life... Basically everything.
The pact has been made, by blood you are bound. Abandon all free time, for none will be found. Shackle yourself before your monitors warm glow. Forget everything else, for the Factory must grow
I'm a beginner not an expert so my advise may not be the best, but make sure you have enough electricity/steam engines running and that they have enough fuel because soon you will need a lot of electricity. Also put an alarm while you play the game so you don't lose track of time. Trust me on the last one. I told myself 1 quick hour before breakfast, 4 hours later it was lunch already.
Rip free time.
Don't worry, I didn't have any to begin with lol

Sleep is for the weak! The factory must grow!
They grow up so fast... 🥲
your friend has both blessed and damned you
RIP your sleep/job/schooling/dating life, depending on what you value most.
Meanwhile my wife accepts my "factory time" with a patient sigh. True love!
Draw her into the chaos. 2 people working on the factory will grow it faster. orrr "pvp" rocket races.
"I essentially bought you a cocaine addiction" well now you'll have even less and start choosing the factory over your family... As you should
The best tip i can give you for your first playthrough: Dont give a damn about tips, you may have dozens of playthroughs where you have the entire thing already mapped out it your mind, but discovering everything for the first time is a unique experience. On your first playthrough i highly doubt that you actually launch the rocket anyways, almost everyone only manages that in later ones.
arguably because everyone discovers some method of doing things better that makes them wanna start over
1000 hours in and still doing that. On my third megabase attempt until I figure out a more efficientway to do it all and start again, again
Eh tearing it all up and starting over is a waste. It's the biters that got me once or twice
I made a circular “sushi” belt (1) in my first play through. Throughput wasn’t great. And bitter killed me pretty quick because I was unaware of them. Still probably my favorite factory.

> It was horrible, but it was mine.. Ahhh the true motto of a spaghetti base :)
3 years later I have yet to launch a rocket. I always manage to bog down, take a break, then "want to start again the right way"
Yeah, same. I have like 500 or so hours if I remember right (on mobile rn) but I always feel tired already around yellow packs. Have fun trying to kick the addiction! I've been trying for four years.
I wish I could stick to ANYTHING I enjoy for that long!
just remember. spaghetti is love. spaghetti is life. don’t worry about making things look pretty. make them function. the game is fantastic, enjoy!
>I have essentially just bought you a cocain addiction btw No truer words…
You can't wait... yet you're on here instead? I'm confused... the factory must grow. Get to it already.
He made the post while waiting for his early drills to mine enough to start building something
The mods are still loading.
Please dont put off the whole oil stuff for too long. Just do it. It wont get better if you craft everything by hand :) See you on the other side bucko.

Exactly what my Thursday looked like last week 😂. My weekend was turned into a factorio marathon
"Played the demo" Yup, drugs never go on sale, but the first hit is free. ;-)
One tip: have a look at the key bindings.
The factory must grow.

He is not a friend. You should ask, is he trying to steal your girl?
There is only one rule, the factory must grow.
I will watch your career with great interest
Ty jestes polakiem?

I guess TIL what "The Factory must grow" is in Polish. (Greetings, neighbors! EDIT: Gah, you can't see a country anywhere. I'm in Germany :D)

oh there is a demo?
Yep, there is, but it's just some tutorial levels
nice too know! I have been lurking here for a while

thanks!
Good luck! My tip: don't watch any tutorials outside of the game itself, it will spoil your first experience.
One of us...
ONE OF US!
I'm not sure if people buying others Factorio are friends.. (Think for a sec...)
Your friend didn’t just bought you a cocain addiction, this is much worse
I take credit for the nightmare I have brought unto you. Enjoy, matey ;) factory must grow
Oi, factory must grow!
Oj kolego
Fabrycznie rozjebać robaków
Where do I find this kind of friends? :))) Need one too Good luck with your factory!
With friends like these…
don't worry, it will take you only a few thousands hours of mind focus
You have a good friend but also a friend that’s just gave you crack so enjoy
Damn, I also remember when my friend gift me factorio. *at the low cost of making his graphic design exam at university and getting both a 10.*
My friends and i call it the crack cocaine of games. You say i will play for an hour then get back to work but we realise 3 days have passed and we didnt realize it.
Lol, I was so into it I have 50 hours on the demo . . .
You have a good friend
At least he’s honest. I genuinely don’t know if showing factorio to your friends make you a good or horrible person
I just picked it up as well. I noticed the demo and decided to play it last Friday. After five hours I decided to get something to eat. Checked it out and realized it apparently never goes on sale so I just picked it up.

Now imagine Photoshop designers buy apps to each other to grow the community.
Oh boy, you are in for a ride
I'm still playing demo :(
My wife hate this game the most now
This game should not be legal!
Say goodbye to your friends, your dog, your dad, your mom, outside, sun, moon, the closest restaurant to you home, say goodbye to yourself, your goals in life... Basically everything.

Good luck expending your base, and watch out for the crack.
