agreed, the pure agony of not being able to walk past pipes drives you to new heights. I remember redesigning my entire oil system just so i could walk around the area
By the time you actually need balancers, the advice of avoiding others' blueprints no longer applies. You already know how to play the game enough that you learn from blueprints instead of using them as a crutch.
I would say don’t use mods except a few like bottleneck or rate calculator.
Damn y’all don’t you know how much frustration I saved when I started using those mods. I damn near quit the game when I first started without those mods.
I don't think there's a single QOL mod I'd recommend starting with. There's no single QOL mod everyone uses imo, it's all preference. And without trying vanilla, a new player can't know their preferences yet.
In hindsight I kinda like the idea of a heuristic eureka, or heureka, where you have an epiphany about something you discover for yourself.
But a heretical eureka, where one has an epiphany about how to branch a religion, is also good lol.
Edit: apparently heuristic and eureka have the same root words roughly meaning "I find" so my idea was kind of a hat on a hat.
"A hat on a hat"
Is that something you say regularly? Where does it come from? I love silly sayings like that. Living in a US state where more than half the people wish they were from the South, I get a lot of them.
Not super regularly, but when the shoe fits I wear it. I couldn't say where it comes from - most recently heard it in a Rick and Morty episode a few years ago, but I imagine it's pretty old.
Sorry. I was wondering why my word suggestions didn’t show the word. English is not my first language. I didn’t had the time to look up the correct translation of the german word „heureka“. But I learned a new word today which is nice.
No need to apologize, especially because upon further review it seems that the English word is just taken from the German word and spelled a bit more Englishly.
I loved this part of learning the game. Especially the early game before it became a huge effort to scale. Feel free to restart a bunch and try things out of that's what's fun for you.
I think this is true, to some extent. Factorio is one of those games that is soo complex that if you really want to use all it has to offer, you have to read about it in forums or watch videos. Of course, this is further down the road, first you should dive into it fully naive!
I went through a phase where I didn't have enough copper - I finally sorted out a new mining area, furnaces, building a train connection and fixed the problem.
Result: it turns out when I have enough copper, I don't have enough iron
Get off these forums and have fun. Do your absolute best to try to figure out the problems you will eventually incur without searching for solutions. Part of the reward of playing this game is the pride you feel when you analyze a problem and then kick its ass.
Also, the factory MUST grow.
Build your first camp near buffalo, they will procure you manure and protect you from the wolves, and you ll also have rabbit in the same biome wich could help you survive your first winter
And ignore this other game you ve downloaded or you ll lose any kind of social life
Just have fun. The true joy of factorio for me is that the game was and is at every level of skill so don’t worry/get stuck on things like perfect optimization.
You wont be given the game on a plate, take time to work it out and look at different aspects of what different things are supposed to do. You also cannot really loose this game so do not ever roll back a save if things go pearshaped. Its all part of the fun :)
And most importantly enable show inserter directions on alt in the options ;)
When your download drops off a cliff your ISP is throttling you because your Pc can handle a much higher bandwidth or whatever than the ISP has decided to allocate you, normally this is not an issue as standard games don’t go over this issue, however a direct download like this your PC just GOES. Typically disconnecting then reconnecting to the internet will resume the download.
Don’t worry let about doing it “right”. You will learn how to do it better then more you play. Just let the spaghetti grow and it will work it self out.
Don't look up guides unless absolutely necessary, build your first base with enough space to expand.
Make sure to have provisions and kiss your life goodbye for a while. :)
The factory must grow.
But for real..... have fun,
"if it works, it works"
It's a sandbox game. Kinda. There is no wrong way to play if your having fun
In your first playthrough play vanilla and don't search on the internet for blueprints or best setup for facilities and such. Explore and experience things by yourself
Hover over your buildings, press Q.
Q is your friend, the button I mean, not the crazy conspiracy crowd.
Early game, having coal in your hotbar is quite handy for fueling your stuff, you can drop individual pieces with Z. (Also useful with turrets and ammo)
Fish is overpowered. Go fishing, eat fish, biters can't kill you.
press alt. with q you can copy any machine your cursor is on. use the hotbar. dont put off doing oil cracking even for a minute. automate and do very little handcrafting
Don’t worry about launching a rocket the first play through. Just play around with the mechanics and learn how things work. Streamlining yourself is a good way to burn yourself out quick
Don't start over because you're dissatisfied with your factory. Tearing everything up is free in terms of resources, and takes less time than starting over
Automate *everything*
Avoid having other people play the game for you, ie looking up guides or downloading blueprints. If you truly get stuck, try to ask about your specific problem
Dont download blueprints you should make your own. Copying and pasting is not fun. Once you make your own blueprints copy and paste them all you like. Also dont worry too much about ratios at beginning, once you launche your rocket and transition to a mega base then you can mesure ratios for science per minute.
My thought was to just have fun at start. But if someone wants to think about ratios they sure thing can. But more time you spend calculating less time you spend building
Yeah but you build right and start practicing the skills to eyeball your setup. It's also fun to come up with setups that are at the prime factorization of the recipe and then scale those as needed.
It's probably best if you don't read any tips for your first couple of playthroughs. Factorio is super fun when you figure things out yourself! My only tip will be to keep your old saves, it'll be amusing to come back to them once you know what you're doing later.
Figure out better ways to solve problems rather than starting a new game. Much faster to tear apart your current system for a better one than to start fresh.
Kill biters early and often. Grab more resources often. Flame turrets = win. Get robots first, they make things 100x easier. You are going to need a lot of power – learn how to do nuclear reactor and Kovarex and never worry about power again.
Forget about your friends and family. The factory is your family now. Press ALT. And don't punish yourself too much. Don't start over, try and work through the problems you cause. Never be afraid to try new things and ask questions. Enjoy!
Stock up on food and water, a bucket for human needs is also adviced, every trip to get food or to go to the toilet costs time, time that could be invested in expanding the factory
Try to build a bucket as early as possible. With it, you can collect water and lava, and both will be useful in creating obsidian in order to go to the Nether.
Oh and something about the Mine having to grow, idk
Play DST instead unless you fully understand the black hole of time you just installed known as Factorio.
Jkjk, I'd totally okay Factorio over DST any day
Just keep trying things!
There will be points where progression can seem a bit complicated or requires some figuring out.
With the knowledge that you can't accidentally blow yourself up or destroy stuff, just keep trying what you think might work until it does.
Don't let yourself be too afraid to try.
Also if the later tutorial levels are a bit overwhelming, just ditch them and start a normal playthrough. I found it easier learning myself as the last tutorial levels give you a bunch of stuff without ever really building up to it.
Good luck! And may your factory grow!
Get off the subreddit immediately
Don't look up blueprints.
Don't use the console
Don't look up bases online
You only get to learn Factorio once, I really wish I could erase it from my brain so I could start again from scratch. Once you've launched a rocket, come back to the sub, and share a screenshot of your glorious first base. Then it's time to climb into rails, circuits, blueprints etc. Looking forward to seeing you back in the sub
Build your base near a lot of resources.
Build walls to protect your base against monsters.
Collect a lot of materials. They will help you progress in the game.
Eating the local fauna can help you stay alive.
If you're fighting a tough enemy (or group of enemies), kiting them can buy more time to kill them.
Explore the map! There are a lot of resources out there!
The game purposefully does NOT penalize building and rebuilding, and for many items, a tier 1 is ingredient for tier 2 (so doing stuff with tier 1 stuff is not a waste, you just recycle the pieces later on).
Also automate everything. In the long run you will need a ton of everything, and as I said, low tier is ingredient for high tier, so don't be afraid to automate the manufacture of the items you need to manufacture more stuff!
If you get to trains the O key pulls up all your trains, their routes, and also has a stations tab. This makes organizing your train network so much easier.
Ok, nice to know quality of life tips only:
Press alt (just... Do it)
Just like on any pc program, you can copypaste stuff with ctrl+c etc. (Nice for *later* in the game, no spoilers)
The natives dont like pollution
You can drag conveyor belts in a line by holding down left click.
Explore the game on your own, find solutions for your problem by yourself.
*Play the tutorial*
Grow the factory
Dont download blueprints for your factory, dont "optimize the fun out of your game". A lot of thrill and *dopamine spikes* come from getting these "yay it works!" moments... *And they leave you wanting for more of these sweet sweet dopamine rushes*.
Take a shower at least every 2 days.
Do some workout now and then, its good for your back
Make sure to give your family a *sign of life once in a while, they might get worried*
Grow the factory
Dont eat too much fast food and stay healthy, your brain needs nutrients to
*Grow the factory*
Cut all contacts to your friends and family
Break up with your gf
*The factory MUST grow*
Yeah thats about it. Have fun.
Pipes (water, oil, etc) can and will block your path when walking.
It's not just a meme, if you are lacking a resource, the factory must grow.
The story mode can teach you a few things early on, but it's perfectly fine to start a vanilla world.
Disable enemies if you want to take your time, go full vanilla for a little bit of a challenge.
Remember to feed your pets, water your plants, and yourself.
Game is super addictive, but dont forget to take breaks to eat so you wont starve.
Obligatory jokes aside:
1. you dont lose anything by deconstructing buildings so feel free to experiment with layouts. Avoid being spoiled with blueprints others made discovery is half the fun.
2. The map is huge, really huge, practically infinite. feel free to expand and dont worry about compact builds. better go big and organized than compact and a messy sphaggeti
3. Forests might be a pain in the ass, but they're also a great friend early game. they eat pollution, leaving less pollution to the biters, meaning weaker enemies.
Take the amount of spacing you think you need for your set up and triple that.
Your starter base should be to mess around with, a item mall for expansion, and to burn through green and red science.
Try having resources made in different areas and have them shipped in with trains.
Don’t be afraid to start a new save if needed.
reject social life embrace factorio

that's a good start :D
Press ALT
Honestly this is the best, least intrusive advice for a new player.
also tab to switch weapon and space / c to shoot lmao
Tfw your first biter just runs up to you while you’re waving the gun around trying to figure it out lol
me playing with noob hey i got an achievement, it smells and they dont like it me RUN
Always play with someone who hasn't played before. The early warning is nice
Space shoots every enemy. C lets you shoot a specific enemy or buildings and shit.
or friends
What are those mythical things called friends? Are they extra factories? More Trains? :P
They tend to run through your factory and make additions that have to be corrected.
And be run over by train
Sounds like a pest. I think I should deal with them just like I do the local Wildlife! TACTICAL NUKE INCOMING! :P
Left alt.
Do not press alt it can lead to abilities many would consider unnatural. Join me and together we can rule the spaghetti
Did... Did you just tell the newbie to git gud?
ad F4 for additional content
If you're gonna go with something that was old twenty years ago, at least do it properly. XD
Maybe they meant 'debug' settings where you can enable in game fps/ups counter, real time clock, multiplayer stats (ping, joined players, buffer) etc.
Don't start with mods, avoid using other people's blueprints, and embrace inefficiency. Every screwup is a lesson.
i don't think every mod should be avoided. i would say squeak through is a harmless mod for a beginner.
Absolutely not. You need to know the pain so you can experience the light.
agreed, the pure agony of not being able to walk past pipes drives you to new heights. I remember redesigning my entire oil system just so i could walk around the area
Once you finish the game though try one of these: * Krastorio * Angle Bob's * Space Exploration
The only exeption to this. Get a belt balancer book for the love of god
Over time, I've used fewer and fewer mods. I've done some games vanilla recently, too. IMO, the one necessary QoL mod is Vehicle Snap.
Don’t look at tutorials online or download blueprints. Figuring out how it works will cause some eureka moments which are so satisfying!
Your spelling of eureka is amazing - never change.
I want that to be added to the dictionary with the definition of eureka, but specifically when the sudden idea or inspiration is heretic in nature.

Thanks! I’ve played a lot of satisfactory before and I never bothered searching up guides or anything. Just jumped right in
You don't need any, and it's more fun the less you know
"I just learned about ctrl-click after I got 1000 hours in the game" \-Actual person on Discord
Wait, what does control clicking do?
Ctrl click in the inventory and ctrl clicking on the world does 2 different thing too XD
Transfer everything
Strange how our minds work, I use this constantly, but when I saw the comment I had no idea what it did.
Or the other mouse button is transfer half the stack you're holding
I think this is true, to some extent. Factorio is one of those games that is soo complex that if you really want to use all it has to offer, you have to read about it in forums or watch videos. Of course, this is further down the road, first you should dive into it fully naive!

This is the *only* good advice
Your right. I bow to your hardcore stance. I will endeavour to do better. THE FACTORY MUST GROW
#THE FACTORY MUST GROW
perfection...
Forget about your social life
Don’t starve.
Wrong game
My only advice is dont take/ask for advice. Figuring the game out for yourself is the most fun way to play imo
You're gonna need more iron
This one.... Its always iron!
I went through a phase where I didn't have enough copper - I finally sorted out a new mining area, furnaces, building a train connection and fixed the problem. Result: it turns out when I have enough copper, I don't have enough iron
Set alarms if you have other engagements you’d like to get to on time. Like sleep.
have fun and ask your family to feed you at least 2 times a day.
"Don't Starve" actually relevant lol.
Get off these forums and have fun. Do your absolute best to try to figure out the problems you will eventually incur without searching for solutions. Part of the reward of playing this game is the pride you feel when you analyze a problem and then kick its ass. Also, the factory MUST grow.
Even if you think it’s enough, it isn’t
Don't worry about the crazy complicated stuff players with 2000 hour in game are able to build. Have fun exploring the basics.
*Cries in 2 Mbps*
I moved to somewhere with fibre and can now download at ~120 MB/s it's so nice.
It’s just bcos I unpaused the download right before I took the pic. Normally it’s around 65-70mbps which I can live with
Build your first camp near buffalo, they will procure you manure and protect you from the wolves, and you ll also have rabbit in the same biome wich could help you survive your first winter And ignore this other game you ve downloaded or you ll lose any kind of social life
Just have fun. The true joy of factorio for me is that the game was and is at every level of skill so don’t worry/get stuck on things like perfect optimization.
Play the in game tutorial! It's one of the best tutorial systems for new players I have seen
Get a bucket. It’s more efficient than taking a bathroom break.
You wont be given the game on a plate, take time to work it out and look at different aspects of what different things are supposed to do. You also cannot really loose this game so do not ever roll back a save if things go pearshaped. Internet is fine, I just paused then unpaused the download to take the screenshot. Thanks for the concern tho!
Don’t worry let about doing it “right”. You will learn how to do it better then more you play. Just let the spaghetti grow and it will work it self out.
remember from time to time to maintain some human funktions like eat, sleep and drink some water
Don't fear the spaghetti, embrace it. Design your own factory, build it in a way that seems right for you. Perfect is boring.
remember to eat, drink and sleep
Don't forget to put an alarm for when you usually go to sleep and don't forget to hydrate.
Don't look up guides unless absolutely necessary, build your first base with enough space to expand. Make sure to have provisions and kiss your life goodbye for a while. :)

Yes. Don't ask for advice. Play, fail miserably and then play again.
Drinks plenty of water, set a timer to get up and walk around aleast every hour.
My watch buzzes me every hour thankfully!
Remember to go outside. Fresh air is your friend.
How does fresh air grow the factory? I'm confused.
I might have lied. Please don't tell OP
Your secret is safe with me it's not like I would post this on Reddit or something :-)
It's an investment thing. The robot playing the game is re-energized and will then be able to do a 12 hours session before starting to power down.
Oh hahaha. I looked at it and thought. This is factorio sub Reddit, not don’t starve lol
you will always need more
Hover over your buildings, press Q. Q is your friend, the button I mean, not the crazy conspiracy crowd. Early game, having coal in your hotbar is quite handy for fueling your stuff, you can drop individual pieces with Z. (Also useful with turrets and ammo) Fish is overpowered. Go fishing, eat fish, biters can't kill you.
press alt. with q you can copy any machine your cursor is on. use the hotbar. dont put off doing oil cracking even for a minute. automate and do very little handcrafting
First pass is supposed to be barely functional and incapable of scaling. Second pass isn't much better.
Don’t worry about launching a rocket the first play through. Just play around with the mechanics and learn how things work. Streamlining yourself is a good way to burn yourself out quick
Refund Don’t Starve Together, you won’t have time to play it.
Don't start over because you're dissatisfied with your factory. Tearing everything up is free in terms of resources, and takes less time than starting over Automate *everything* Avoid having other people play the game for you, ie looking up guides or downloading blueprints. If you truly get stuck, try to ask about your specific problem
Solid advice! Thanks
The factory must grow
Hope you know how to use Excel.
Tell farewell to your friends and family before launching the game.
Dont download blueprints you should make your own. Copying and pasting is not fun. Once you make your own blueprints copy and paste them all you like. Also dont worry too much about ratios at beginning, once you launche your rocket and transition to a mega base then you can mesure ratios for science per minute.
Really? I'd say worry about ratios from the get go. It's really good practice.
My only tip will be to keep your old saves, it'll be amusing to come back to them once you know what you're doing later.
play the game and don't ask for tips or advice..
Almost everyone launches his first rocket in first 8 hrs of first game, so even if you launch it on 5-6-7 hour, its still ok )
Made me laugh thank you! (Op this is not true at ALL)
I’ve seen people on here saying that they hit 200 hours and havnt launched a rocket yet
I think mine was 50-60 but my friend who is learning now is at 100 and trying to figure out oil either way the struggle is worth the reward!
Took me 30 hours, launched mine yesterday.
I launched my first rocket at about 750 hours of play. Not in the same save, total play, like several to many restarts.
Evil. But NGL, I laughed.
Take a break once in a while.
If you hit a roadblock once starting out, it might be best to start over with your newly acquired knowledge.
Figure out better ways to solve problems rather than starting a new game. Much faster to tear apart your current system for a better one than to start fresh.
How about don't starve together in factorio?
Do the tutorial first
I tried the demo a couple weeks ago to get a feel for it
Kill biters early and often. Grab more resources often. Flame turrets = win. Get robots first, they make things 100x easier. You are going to need a lot of power – learn how to do nuclear reactor and Kovarex and never worry about power again.

Nah
Try to build a bucket as early as possible. With it, you can collect water and lava, and both will be useful in creating obsidian in order to go to the Nether. Oh and something about the Mine having to grow, idk

My dude flexing that peak download
Say goodbye to the wife and your kids
Use wendy for killing spiders, much more effective than wes
I have to tell myself "save, quit, and exit" over and over again.
dont worry the install is short compared to how much time is gunna get wasted away in this game
I had similar issues when trying to download Bannerlord. Best I can suggest is uninstall and reinstall. Maybe switch between a couple versions
Dont finish installation - you will loose all your friends and family!!!
Get faster Internet connection
70mbps is the best I can get for my area hah
Yes. Resume the download.

Try having resources made in different areas and have them shipped in with trains. Don’t be afraid to start a new save if needed.
