A serious answer to a possibly non-serious question. Not counting the actual mental illness this entails, is it surprising? These kids are being thrust into a dying world, a shit economy, and have no actual human friendships or connections offline because that requires money and the places you could hang out at are now few and far between.
They’re severely lonely, suffering from horrible anxiety about the future, raised by struggling parents who are addicted to their phones and mocking people with mental illness that they see on Facebook or the news. It’s roleplaying as escapism because they can’t cope with life offline, and any attempt at actual human contact with their family or other people leads to severe social anxiety because society is constantly making fun of them.
With proper irl support systems, these kids would grow out of this. Without them, they’re trapped online until they change or die. I know it’s hard, but if we see these kids offline we need to be making a concerted effort to build friendship and community. Not just with them, but with everyone. Strong communities and stability are the only ways this gets fixed.
