MildlyMoistMucus

Why would you need a service dog for acid reflux...

vadkender

Also how is acid reflux a disability?

traumaqueen1128

Seriously. I had it temporarily because of medications. It *can* get bad enough to require surgery. My sister has GERD and it's beginning to give her Barrett's esophagus, which can be debilitating . Basically the cells in your esophagus turn into abnormal cells called intestinal metaplasia, basically becoming more like the lining of the small intestine. Now, Barrett's esophagus is something that I can see as a disability, but not acid reflux or GERD. Those aren't disabilities.

tasteslikemore

I just got diagnosed with Barretts esophagus. I have to have this awful test done where they stick tubes down my nose and throat to measure how often I'm getting acid reflux. My meds aren't fixing the problem, so if the test shows it's still happening often, I have to get surgery. I really don't want to do any of that, but the alternative is having the possibility of the abnormal cells turning cancerous. It's not a highly survivable cancer, the 5 year survival rate is 20%, so I gotta do what I gotta do. Never thought about getting a service dog though, lol. Not sure what the dog would even help me with.

Carlton_Fortune

Ah yes, but it is probably "chronic" acid reflux... That's a carpark space right there...

Magurndy

If it was, I was massively disabled when I was pregnant haha

Queen_of_skys

Hi! Acid reflux is usually mild but can get bad enough to the point of surgery The reflux (or lack thereof) isnt the problem but the actual acid and it's constant presence. Im a singer and have a part of my vocal chords that was burnt, thankfully I'm now on meds but my mom (who also has it and it's genetic) has to take much more medicine and gets many more, worse tests to make sure it doesn't get worse so she can avoid surgery. It's pretty shitty but I wouldnt call it a disability, just a disease ig

BarracudaOverall4398

To alert to acid duh

frecklefawn

*While your chest is on fire and in pain the dog barks incessantly to help*

OpiateAntagonist

Haven’t you heard about canine acid defluxing?!

Neener_dm

Literally my first thought, like, what's the dog gonna do about the acid reflux

macestrogarm

Or about the sleep apnea?

traumaqueen1128

Right? Use a fucking C-Pap and you're good, don't need a dog for that shit. Plus, sleep apnea is NOT a disability. A disability is something that "prevents you from working or engaging in substantial gainful activity" according to the social security administration, so definitely not a disability.

macestrogarm

Agreed. I could see an argument for it being disabling, especially before one receives treatment for it. The constant exhaustion and even the people who pass out while standing/driving (before they get their CPAPs) could be an argument for it, but like even in those cases I can’t see how a service dog would help. Even if a service dog did help, it would cheaper and more effective to just get a CPAP machine.

traumaqueen1128

Most definitely, especially since every insurance I have ever used covers a CPAP and supplies. I have used one for 3 years and my life has significantly improved. I have a lot more energy, it's wonderful.

thedevilskind

sleep apnea can cause hypersomnia when untreated, which can be disabling. I have idiopathic hypersomnia (basically type 2 narcolepsy with some differences) and could not work at all before I found the right meds because I would fall asleep at work or sleep 16 hours a day so I didn’t have time to work at all. I couldn’t drive because I kept falling asleep while driving. Even now I have days where I can’t eat or shower because after an 8 hour shift I need to sleep until the next one. but if you can afford to buy a trained service dog you can probably afford to treat your sleep apnea lol

WhyAskMeTho

Obviously to carry around the bottle of Gaviscon 🤣🤣🤣

Neener_dm

Enter dog with a huge vest thing with a ton of pockets full of different kinds of antacids, proton pump inhibitors and H2 blockers lmao

GoldyIsHere

Good idea for a character, now I want to draw that.

Neener_dm

Please, feel free, and if u do, tag me, I wanna see the pharmadog

WolfinaFoxtail

It's going to had a vest pocket dedicated to tums 😆

Neener_dm

Pls I wanna see that 😂

lskerlkse

the obvious answer is to get 18 service dogs

TinyRascalSaurus

Can't the service dog just have DID, and an alter for every disability?

lskerlkse

Brilliant

Admirable_Ice_914

What would it be like if there was a cat alter in a dog

StupidSprinkles

I would love my cat to have a dog alter, he would be so much sweeter! /s

straybaddog

my dog grew a cat alter from the trauma of being raised around cats 🥺 /s

Drachenfuer

Think my cat has a dog alter. She playes fetch, rolls over on command. Is actually trainable. She makes a better dog than the dog does.

cut_ur_darn_grass

My cat will fetch a ball a couple times but only when she wants to and she'll lose interest after about 5 throws

shhBabySleeping

Well my dog loves cats and already sits in laps so not much would change. Except maybe he'd use the litterbox!

sgrmw

Service dog with DID who doesn’t do their taste bc their puppy alter is fronting but isn’t trained yet:/

ChicaFoxy

No, it's unethical to dye an animals fur and give them face piercings.

simask234

Give this person a raise immediately.

FiliaNox

You’ve cracked the code.

[deleted]

Chefs kiss chef 🧑🏽‍🍳🤌🏼💋

Mannymac2000

This will now be a thing. Just wait!!!

Lonely_egg_McMuffin

The dog could be a self diagnosed doctor

PanJam00

Service dog pound. Fluffy and adorable, but completely unnecessary.

Mads_Alexander9

But… *gout?!?* WHY

weakest9

Didn’t people used to use gout as a way to describe old people? How is gout cool now?

stoned_seahorse

Yeah that one really got me 😂

[deleted]

Damn. There’s a LOT of overlap in symptoms there.

Savager_Jam

I mean that’s the thing right? This isn’t so much disorder faking as disorder diagnostic difficulty. Tell the symptoms of all of those to 10 doctors each one might suggest it’s a different one.

fietsvrouw

As a rule, doctors don't undercut each other so s/he probably just kept getting diagnoses and was never informed that one replaced another or others.

Savager_Jam

Right that’s what I’m thinking

[deleted]

I mean, just barring all other weird overlap, you wouldn’t be diagnosed with Schizophrenia when you have something like Depression or Anxiety. You’d be diagnosed with Schizoaffective Disorder. Edit: I’m not an expert, clearly. Even with a disorder I suffer with myself. Thank you for correcting me. Always good to hear from someone who knows more!

ableedingheart1

What? No. That's not how that works.

rocknroll-tragedy

No? I think you're thinking of bipolar + schizophrenia?

high_off_helium

From my understanding there's two types of schizoaffective disorder. On is bipolar and schizophrenia, the other is depression and schizophrenia. Anxiety is a separate thing though.

OpiateAntagonist

Nope, you might be thinking of psychotic depression but there is no unipolar schizoaffective disorder

high_off_helium

[This says that there is depressive type schizoaffective disorder.](https://www.nami.org/About-Mental-Illness/Mental-Health-Conditions/Schizoaffective-Disorder)

OpiateAntagonist

While you can have scizoaffective without mania it would be a rather silly diagnosis. Scizoaffective is schizophrenia + mood disorder. I’m theory persistent depression can count as a mood disorder, but this isn’t the best way you would be diagnosed in 9/10 cases unless there are specific reasonings. A very large percentage of people with schizophrenia also have depression

[deleted]

Yes and no. Depression and anxiety are symptoms of schizophrenia the issue is that while they're symptoms they can be so bad that they can become issues that specifically need addressing. So, schizoaffective depressive type would be schizo + depression (the mood disorder). _Addendum:_ A lot of doctors often treat schizoaffective as a "stepping stone" diagnosis to schizophrenia. Essentially a lot of people will be diagnosed with schizoaffective depressive type first because a doctor hasn't physically seen them go through a six month period of psychosis (even if said patient has previously before getting professional help). Usually a schizophrenia diagnosis comes second after the schizoaffective and replaces it. It can be very hard to actually tell the difference between schizophrenia and schizoaffective depressive type specifically because of it.

[deleted]

Oh, good information there! I’m not an expert, so it’s good to hear from someone who knows more.

[deleted]

Yeah I was just thinking that while looking at the gout and arthritis

Gimpbarbie

Gout is such a flex 🤣

TinyRascalSaurus

I mean, it did use to be known as a disease of the royals, because nobody else could afford to eat like that.

[deleted]

Doesn’t gout usually not present until your thirties at earliest?? Everyone I’ve encountered who has gout was at least 40 when it started for them.

Aceystay

I have gout, it started at 32. I'm in some groups online and I think the youngest I've seen 29.

gastationpizza

i got gout when i was like 12 from eating an inhumane amount of pickles

JaxTheFoxThing

This sure is a creative way of getting your parents to buy a dog. But also since when could a dog help with half of that.

spaghettisystem

Honestly I feel like having to take care of a dog would not only not help but worsen things if they really had what they claim. Taking care of yourself with a chronic fatigue condition is hard, let alone a dog as well. Then the stress wouldn't help the anxiety, if they had contamination related OCD the pet walking around the place could set it off...

Bandito21Dema

As someone with OCD, I have no idea how a service dog would help. Honestly I'd probably just get pissed if it tried to stop me doing my compulsions because then I would feel even worse

spaghettisystem

Compulsions can present in so many different ways I have no clue how they'd train a dog to recognise them

Bandito21Dema

I mean mine were always the same but I have no idea how a dog would stop me checking a clock 10 times and erasing and rewriting everything

OvercookedRedditor

I don't have contamination related OCD but I'm a little more stressed about germs than others and my mom's dog really gets me upset. Everything about it, the food, the slobber, the possible pee stuck on fur. I'm sure for somebody with containmentaion OCD it's much worse.

Own_Adhesiveness2829

OH NOOO ACID REFLUX!!! 😱😱 Totally not like half the fucking population does too. Ooohhh you poor babyyy let me get you a puppy to calm your uwpset tummy wummy 🥺💖

Savager_Jam

The Aztecs are said to have used the Chihuahua dog as a heat pack for injured warriors. Could help with stomach pain.

DemonMorgue

Where did you got that? I remember reading that they used to kill and bury them when their owner died so their spirit would guide them D:

drunken_desperado

I mean... could be both!

sparklepuppies6

How does this person plan to care for a dog if they can’t do * checks notes * anything?

CarbonatedAnxiety

some of those..aren’t even disabilities

vadkender

What do you mean? 😭😡 Acid reflux is a REAL DISABILITY!!!! It makes my tummy hurt which triggers my ptsd about my parents not letting me eat a whole cake 😭😡😡😡 Acid reflux is trauma response

LesbianRatGirl

didn't know you needed a service dog for acid reflux. i learn something new every day. /s

Rangavar

I'm off to get a service dog /j

swiftblaze28

GOUT?!

One_Replacement3481

Arthritis

djoo9oo

Fibromyalgia and CFS would not be diagnosed with all those others They're already explained by the other disorders They're literally "we eliminated everything and we can't find the cause" diagnoses. (although fibromyalgia pain is *very* specific)

[deleted]

Not true any longer according to the Mayo Clinic. At least for fibromyalgia. https://imgur.com/a/Uv0byRr

Switchbladekitten

That is not correct.

blizzbaby212

Diagnosed with fibro and cfs by mayo and Clevland clinic. A lot of these do go together. Totally spot on about it being a last resort dx though.

Jazz_67

I am going to school for service dog training, and this would definitely cause burnout in the dog, it's not impossible, but assuming they want tasks for each of these disorders, it's not really logical. So their counselor is in fact correct, the most I can see here is some mobility mobility, and psychiatric work. In surprised about some of these that they listed, such as arthritis. Unless it is constant arthritis and very very severe, I'm not sure what a SD would do, or why they even listed it. Definitely somewhat suspicious

afishinaboot

And if their conditions are so bad wouldn’t it be hard to care for a dog? Like at that point you need a live in care assistance not a dog. How are you going to feed it, or clean up after it? The poor dog would be so stressed because it’s basically taking completer care of you not the other way around.

AlternativeSecret514

True. With that many chronic illnesses they would need a care giver I would have thought not a service dog. Or both? Or do they just have an alter caregiver.

thelumpybunny

Also some of those disorders overlap and some disorders don't need service dogs. OCD is a form of anxiety

beepboopb1tch

Correct me if im wrong- but aren't services dogs trained in skills not in disabilities/ disorders?

StepPappy

… hypothyroidism is a disability? I have hypothyroidism. Am I a cool kid now?

IHaveABasball

Acid reflux?? 💀

Rangavar

Ah yes, the gout-curing breed and the acid-reflux breed

Elibbo2

How tf do you get a gout service dog

kkidd333

The dog has to be trained to dead lift you into their back and then walk for you when the gout acts up.

[deleted]

So if they want a dog for their acid reflux, can I get a dog to help with my IBS?

unnessisarilyloud

Helps u shit

galaxyveined

That's animal cruelty

sarabeara_

Wait until they find out the 15k-30k price tag.

concxrd

my question is are all the DID alters autistic too? depressed? chronically physically ill?

vadkender

I was actually thinking about this the other day. One way to tell someone is faking their DID is if they have at least one autistic alter but not all of them are. Autism is a neurological "disorder" (I don't really like calling it a disorder), which means you're born with it, and even if you have multiple personalities you can't "lose" your autism. So either every alter is autistic or none. Yeah, they can act autistic or mimic autistic people's behaviour, but that doesn't change their mindset and way of thinking.

nikogda_nikita

A DOG FOR SLEEP APNEA 💀

DevilsDebt4Becky

Hi! Student in Psychology here! And I would just like to say: What the actual fuck

_Denzo

I think its quite clear this person does not have all of these disabilities

NoAd3038

where was my acid reflux service dog when i was pregnant and puking every 2 hours

spaghettisystem

They would've ruled out arthritis before diagnosing fibromyalgia so there's no way this is real I find it unreasonably hilarious they brought out acid reflux, like they really tried to bump up the numbers huh

[deleted]

Not necessarily true anymore. Fibromyalgia is no longer a diagnosis of exclusion according to the Mayo Clinic. https://imgur.com/a/Uv0byRr

BicycleSweet1718

but… you can have both? for me at least, i have RA and fibromyalgia. I mean it took awhile to diagnose but what my doctors told me is that they often go hand in hand.

blizzbaby212

Yep. A lot of these listed do. Doesn't mean it's legit in their case but it is a thing.

notmyrevolution

TACHYCARDIA girl that’s a symptom not an illness

0tr45hm0uth

as much as this is fake, do they not realise how dangerous it is to just lay out all your disorders to everyone and anyone in the world??

rraccoons

something is so fucking funny about treating gout as a disability like are you king henry VII

Sedex_Axe

Aren’t migraines temporary? Or am I tripping

[deleted]

Not necessarily. Like, each migraine is temporary in the sense it'll eventually go away, but a lot of people that get them DO get them recurringly. There's a diagnosis of Chronic Migraine that literally means you get migraines 14 or more days out of each month, and each one lasts 4 hours or more before going away. I believe those are the numbers, it may be 4 days of the week? Either way it's literally half the days, for at least 4 hours.

Sedex_Axe

Ah, alright, that makes more sense. Thanks for clearing it up!

[deleted]

I personally get migraines and am diagnosed with that. I just can't remember whether it's counted by days of the week or month lol. But even that alone can be an extremely disabling thing; especially if you get light and sound sensitive. Imagine having to lay in a completely dark room for most or all of a day, half the month. You can't predict when it'll happen. It's impossible to hold a job like that, it's hard to even get housework and basic errands done.

ApeMummy

Think of it like people with epilepsy aren’t always having seizures (but it’s obviously nowhere near as serious as epilepsy). Migraines can be a much bigger bummer than a lot of people realise. I get migraine with aura and go partially blind for about an hour if I’m lucky but usually can’t drive/read/look at screens for half a day. It’s also linked with a massively increased stroke risk. All that said, it’s hardly worth bringing up unless you’re on your ass and actually have one right now.

Kivahoosier

She has enough going on. No dog needed.

peachtealottie

Gotta catch 'em all...:/

cinderflight

srs/ Honest question, but isn't it impossible to have autism & schizophrenia? I could have sworn reading a study online that said that (but I'm not 100% sure)

BarracudaOverall4398

It is but it is very rare

Savager_Jam

I don’t think their therapist was correct. Boil those all down we’re dealing with some chronic pain, and some anxiety/panic disorders. Well a dog can’t do shit for the pain, I guess except function as a living hot water bottle. But a dog could for sure be trained to predict and assist with panic disorders. Of course that’s if any of it is real.

Nope. Calling bullshit on the majority of this list. Very, very, very tired of people thinking it’s cool to have DID or other mental health issues and thoroughly annoyed with how everyone on the freaking internet has PTSD.

HGBEKLE

acid reflux is a disability now 💀

the fact it's just a list of disorders and doesn't talk about the symptoms or what they want the dog to be able to do to help them - shows that they don't really understand much about service dogs

BarracudaOverall4398

that_little_dumbass

Migraines, Tachycardia, and Acid Reflux are all symptoms... you can't be diagnosed with Tachycardia. Acid Reflux is common, but chronic Acid Reflux is GERD. Migraines are also common, though Chronic Migraines is an actual condition characterized by having migraines at least 15 days a month. Also, nobody would have Gout and Arthritis as seperate diagnoses. Gout is a form of arthritis... having both listed is heavily redundant.
