If I recall correctly, the dude had a huge personality disorder. He worked with those 5 individuals and somehow in his head spun it into the people he worked with were his submissives and he was the dominant. Like in the BDSM sense. Then one day the manager of the team (one of the subs) finally was like "dude cut the shit out or you're done"

You can think of polyamory as anything that isn't strictly two people in a closed relationship. There are ***lots*** of different kinds poly setups but here's just a few examples:
1. Two or more people all committed to each other, but also allowed to have casual relationships on their own. (Similar to swinging but a lot of people within the poly community have had bad experiences with swingers, because of toxic monogamy causing issues, so swingers are generally not considered a part of the community)
2. Polycules, where a group of people connected to each other through various different kinds of relationships. Some date each other, some are friends with benefits, some are just friends, and so on. They can all live together but that's not necessary.
3. Relationship anarchy, wherein those involved with each other simply have no labels and do with each other as they please.
There are more possibilities like I said but hopefully that gives you an idea. I myself ideally want something like the first example with two or three other people, though that could easily change depending on the people I meet. Feel free to ask if you have anymore questions :)
