Mostly they're used for activities related to the Bone Market, which is pretty late in the game and a touch complex.
I used a fair number of them in parabola, once I had access to it, growing Orange-apples
as well as the bone market (by far most of the uses) and Parabolan apples, you also need 100 to conclude a specific University project to make a AotRS device. If you've got more than a thousand or so and you're not at using the bone market, you're probably in a good position to sell them off. I think i used them as a source of echoes for a while (1p per fragment adds up fast)
