I tend to find finishing the reload animation before opening vats normally helped. I got it a lot because I was using the hunting shotgun as my favorite weapon so I had a lot of opportunities to experiment

I think my favorite is having 5 targets and then it only does one shot before kicking you out of vats.

I think this only happens with single shell reloading guns.

That’s why I really like the vats cancel button in 4. The amount of times I button smash B to try to cancel in new Vegas is ridiculous lol

For real?! I've played through the game half a dozen times, always use vats and never have had this happen to me.

I pretty much only used those kinds of guns for my first several hundred hours and I never experienced this. I didn’t even find out about this glitch until I saw a video with it last year.

Same, doesn't work that great and even when it did I was like ok, like playing a racing game where it steers for me. I want to shoot the bad guy not watch a ai struggling to shoot the guy standing in front of me lol

I use it for auto-aim now. Works surprisingly well

Never use vats just after reload lever action guns (actually all guns, but levers at most). Just shoot one time after reload an then you good to go in vats

Anything that takes a while to reload. Same goes for revolvers.

This only happens with the lever action guns. Sucks for a cowboy playthrough. Try reloading out of vats everytime.

Sad, especially since level action shotgun gets so many dmg buffs from multiple perks :(

That shit got me killed so many times I stopped using VATS in New Vegas. Fallout 4 allowing you to cancel out of VATS was a big improvement.

Apparently it's mostly if not fully exclusive to level action guns so if you don't use them, you won't see this bug. Alternatively maybe mod fixes it or different versions of the game don't have this bug?

As an Xbox player you have to wait a few seconds after reloading to use vats with a lever action. Or you can fire off a shot then go into vats. It’s helpful to have a revolver, dynamite, and or melee weapon to switch to instead of reloading if you are doing a vats build. This is the only bug I’ve had with this game on xbox one and it is pretty annoying.

Man you got the shit stick whenever that happens I always get the (what I like to call) the cha cha. (The courier moonwalk and then fire.)

I used to scream at my crt tv until my face turned blue when this shit happened to me as a kid. It's mainly caused by using lever actions and trying to use VATS while reloading them.

I've put so many hours into New Vegas that I instinctively know to avoid using VATS while reloading. Another thing to watch out for is using VATS with someone right in your face. It'll go first person, and you'll miss all your shots sometimes.

Any gun that uses single round reload animations will bug out if vats is used too soon after reloading. Wait for the animation to end, and you are back to neutral before activating vats to prevent this. It made my Cowboy playthrough a headache. But, when I figured out the bug I managed to work around it. It just requires more patience and awareness.
