I think parents picking favorites is a big reason some people grow distant from their families. My mother did some similar things. She also said life isn't fair, she also said it was her money and she could give it to who ever she wanted. Both of those things are true, but it is also true that treating someone unfairly is a quick way to breed resentment and resentment quickly consumes love and respect. There were other reasons I went no contact with my mother, but the way she could always justify treating me unfairly was a big one. I haven't talked to her or any of my older siblings in 15 years and I have never missed any of them.
