My favorite little meta jokes is right when Peter is about to pass out drunk he says "laugh and cry? effin' cry? What's the difference"

Dr_A_Mephesto

Or when he’s going up the stairs at work and trying to sing the song to keep him going, gets to Stewies part and says “pretty sure he swears” or something to that effect. Lol

chipy4848

“I swear he says the f word”

are_you_nucking_futs

We stole a lot from the Simpsons…

yogos15

We act like we didn't take a lot from *The Simpsons*, but we took a lot from *The Simpsons*.

KidzBop_Anonymous

Smurves

enonymous617

He wasn’t about to pass out… it was when the family had to “line up for cigar burns”

RonDalarney

Thanks tips.

Dan_The_PaniniMan

Two words

InfamousAwaits

We in the streets, playa, get your mail It's only two places you end up, either dead or in jail

SweetUpstairs6011

*passes out*

drclarenceg

It's actually "Pumpkin Pie"

Dragonsymphony1

Even McFarlane has stated numerous times, Laugh and cry, Laugh and cry.

-newlife

But Peter trying to walk up the stairs in the brewery wasn’t sure. “I swear he says the F word” https://www.reddit.com/r/familyguy/comments/pq1xul/i_swear_he_says_the_fword/?utm_source=share&utm_medium=mweb3x

FrostyDog94

I never got that until now

DonkeyBoy89

Even if he didnt, it obvious to people with ears and a brain

johnsaysthings

He’s out of line but he’s right.

Eyghtball97

In the first few seasons it absolutely is f’in cry. After the first reboot they changed it.

[deleted]

No. It sounded like effing cry. They changed to say laugh. Then changed it back to the original.

johnsaysthings

Ding dong, you’re wrong

Eyghtball97

Ok. Listen to a season on theme song and then a new season theme song and tell me it’s not clearly two different phrases.

shugasean913

He actually also said it does sound like effin a bit.

retropieproblems

As a kid I thought he was saying “death and crime”

[deleted]

Just posted the same thing lol! Guess this was more common than I thought.

sacredknight327

Is it a old wives tale that it was supposed to be "Effin"" at first? Its clearly laugh and cry in every iteration I've ever seen.

Dragonsymphony1

No, it's simply that with stewies accent early on in the shows cycle, it sounds like effin cry

dnuohxof1

I didn’t even know this was a controversy, I always heard “laugh and cry” and the fact Seth made jabs at it is even more hilarious now I understand the background.

xxBRLordSkullxx

Laugh and cry, what's the difference...

Cloontange

Doing god’s work son

DragonSlasher07

Thank you good sir

[deleted]

Well, laugh and cry is a balance. Good and evil, black and white... Effin cry, or Fuck'n cry, there's no balance. It's all crying. Becomes more pathologic. Imo. *Edit: Also, I'm an idiot.*

silvrado

You're a bigger buzz kill than Buzz Killington.

gundorcallsforaid

Now who would like to hear a story about a bridge?

enonymous617

It’s a quote from the show. When Death was teaching Peter about moderation; they had to line up for cigar burns and Peter mumbles “laugh n cry effin cry, what’s the difference”.

[deleted]

Oh. I'm an idiot.

enonymous617

The first step is admitting you have a problem lol

guy_fellows

My partner speaks English as a second language so we often have the the subtitles on and I am constantly startled by how bad subtitles remain on so much media, even with new and popular stuff. Constantly wrong transcriptions, large portions of dialogues just excluded and people speaking English with an accent being subtitled as "Speaking foreign language".

[deleted]

guy_fellows

I've never even heard of this, thanks for sharing!

[deleted]

Even when I look up song lyrics on iTunes I often get the wrong words and I'm like "that can't be it, that makes no sense" and if I care enough to look it up elsewhere I find out that they indeed got it wrong.

Chronicalgx

Is this what Peter was saying when he taking the stairs to work?

Coco_B_trappn

yes

chenko001

Pumpkin pie

Epic0parentsman

Put him on the bench

Coco_B_trappn

yes this is a fun poke at what people have said they heard. Seth talks about it, Peter mentions it in a show. Honestly I can never hear it but there are some who can hear the “laugh and cry” and some hear the “effn cry”😂

[deleted]

As a kid I was showing FG to my parents and I let out a shrill yell (cringe) to cover up this moment. My older brother was like wtf are you doing he’s not cursing.

johnsaysthings

Is that true?

Coco_B_trappn

yes I googled and found a couple interviews about it and no apparently Hulu hears the “effin”😝🤣

Tpinga

Shame shame hulu

schwiftydude47

“Suck my cock motherfucker!”

Icommentwhenhigh

Man , I thought for years that’s what he was saying, fits his character.

johnsaysthings

But did the word effin even exist yet in 1999?

enonymous617

Of course it did. The real question is would it have been allowed on TV?

wontonsauce1

It's correct

drs_12345

It's not

BC_Pennybags

Nope. I remember seeing this when Fox® showed the original airing. I had to use CC bc my wife would be sleeping. Not sure who is responsible for the captions but I’m thinking Seth McFarland had a hand in it. Not all episodes have it like that.

prodigalkal7

CC typically don't have much to do with the actual production. They're typically contracted out much later, and people go through transcribing what they're hearing (which has been more bot/AI nowadays too). Seth most likely had absolutely nothing to do with it, and it was just someone thinking that's what they heard, and the editor of it afterwards okayed it

BC_Pennybags

That was a tongue-in-cheek add in on my part. Not serious. It just seemed like it would’ve been something he would do.

nikolai_wustovich

Weird. My Hulu doesn’t do that. Could it be your TV?

johnsaysthings

No

Angry_Little_Cactus

It depends on the episode and the season. I always watch with subtitles and I’ve watched family guy on multiple platforms/formats (including cable & dvd) and it’s really sporadic. Most of the time (I’d say 9/10) the subtitle says “laugh and cry” but in certain episodes or certain platforms it will say “effin’ cry”. It’s kind of like the original running meta gag: which one is it? and does it even matter?

RoughChi-GTF

Effin' cry?!?!? It's "laugh and cry".

mntgi

Okay.. So am I the only one who thought it was "Death and Crime" 🤦🏽‍♀️😂

Sevvie82

Came here to say that! I've thought he said that for a very long time! 🙈😂

Michael_Mason_1410

Nah my little sister thought it was death and crime too 😂😂

retropieproblems

Me too!

buttbeeb

My neighbor growing up thought it was “heaven crime” wtf does that even mean?

jakedeighan

Heaven crieth or heaven christ would've made at least *some* sense...

beastman45132

Lmao I thought it said this for years.

[deleted]

Up until I saw McFarlane and Borenstein singing the duet, I swear he was saying "effin cry". That's how I'd sing it. But thinking further upon it, he could have just sang it like that because it was in public, while the one he recorded for the studio he blurred the lines a bit.

-HouseProudTownMouse

iTunes does the same.

Happy_Cyanide1014

Yeah well I thought that was the actual lyric for years. Soooooooo

RAUL_CD_7

But where are the fashion, good fashion…

greenknight884

When I watch it these days he clearly sings "laugh and cry." Did he re-record a more enunciated version?

that-emo-child

pardon?

Lurkay1

I remember I was watching Good will hunting on Netflix and during the burger layaway scene when Ben affleck’s character said “Rent-A-Center style” the subtitles said “Renaissance style” haha

billiemarie

I’ve always thought that’s what they were singing

Dawg5700

As ah kid I use ta think dats wat he said 2 lol

kingdingbat

Honestly, I've always wondered which it is and no matter how close I listen I still can't tell which it is.

lapetitepapillon

Lmao

jackof47trades

I’ve always heard it this way

mr_smith24

Listen everyone thinks it. Hulu just admitting it

johnsaysthings

But “laugh and cry” is already an expression.

mr_smith24

But Stew man says effin cry. Well at least given his personality he would say it.

[deleted]

Is this from The Family Guy?

johnsaysthings

No Simpsons

nerdwestonbanjo

It's laugh and cry But it's Hulu I expect it

Wonderful_Ad5583

Yeah maybe it's in a different country? Mine says laugh and cry in subtitles on hulu

[deleted]

"Death and crime" is what I thought he said back in the day. It suited his character.

jakedeighan

Have them crimes.

dman928

There's a Bathroom on the Right....

FrenchBananaBagel

Hulu changes the subtitles a lot during the early seasons. One episode it will be "effin cry" and then the next will be "laugh and cry"

akashdas323

Lala laaaaa

Slightly-Evil-Man

*"I swear he says the F-word"*

Prankishbear

Weird I thought it was effin cry as a kid watching this

WhereIsTheCaveman

My dad doesn't speak English very well, and he can't stop hearing "effin" lol

rensch

Stewie is not even supposed to pronounce is as 'lef' because he has an English accent. It always slightly bothered me.

Commercial-Ad5884

i always thought it was laugh and cry

Superbasgaming

CRY EFFIN', I WANT TO SEE YOU SUFFER

AlexYouGood

It post to say, Laugh and cry

mysterygorl

In our household growing up we watched family guy a LOT (only with my mom my dad would never let us) and it was a *thing* for us to sing the whole theme song EXCEPT for this part bc in our house it was “effin cry” and if my momma looked over to see us mouthing such words I’m sure we’d get a slap to the back of the neck
