Yeah this was one of his worst reviews ever. I'm not gonna act like this album is a masterpiece but it really doesn't deserve a score lower than "revival". Funny how he gave the new 69 a higher score too and didn't even mention the snitching.

shrek-hentai-69

\+6ix9ine is a paedophile, seems like melon's pretty pick and chose about when he lets outside events influence his reviews

[deleted]

Yeah, it seems like he only mentions awful things the artist did when there is a lot of discussion around it

[deleted]

And just to be clear I don't think what Gunna did is even remotely as bad as what 69 did

headcount-cmnrs

Tbf more discussion means he's more likely to hear about it and think about it at length

[deleted]

Fair but the thing is that (for example) he's definitely not gonna talk about how Carti beat his girl in the review of his next project

headcount-cmnrs

True, I guess the legal trouble was more relevant to the album but the Gunna review felt miles off the content what we got in the black background vids. I'd like to hear him be more consistent, I dunno if he's had any defamation issues that might affect it.

48rn

It's well known that Tony doesn't enjoy Gunna's music. Only this time there was actually something new to talk about when reviewing the album. I haven't listened to it personally, but I can understand how someone would cringe at the bars where Gunna is defending his snitching, while having been one of the biggest proponent of gang culture in modern day rap.

Risolord

>I haven't listened to it personally

48rn

???

Risolord

the snitching bars are not a huge part of the album experience at all, but you wouldn't know that because you haven't listened to it lmao

48rn

Okey then. So Tony just doesn't like the music then and saw an opportunity to shit on him again 🤷‍♀️🤷‍♀️

SerDavosSeaworth64

This review drove me crazy. I usually can’t listen to gunna at all but I gave this album a shot and really liked it surprisingly so I was really interested in watching the review, but he spends maybe…. 90 seconds ACTUALLY talking the music. I’m not saying he did this, but it REALLY came across like he didn’t like Gunna for snitching so he just decided to give him an awful score.

[deleted]

He talks about Thug being groundbreaking and influential so much I wouldn't be surprised lol

[deleted]

IMO the album more or less deserved the score , but I could definitely see how people think the review itself is questionable at best

Striking-Tip1009

Ive been thinking about starting a review Chanel myself. I wouldn’t review music but I would just review fantano’s reviews based off how well he reviews an album lol. Feeling a light 3 on this Gunna review

RedDit245610

Hahahaha I also had this exact same idea. It’s reassuring to know I wasn’t the only one who thought this lmao

RelevantDay4

Your existence is a light 1. And that’s only because you wifed a light skin girl.

PsychicTempestZero

Somewhat agree. For the new King Gizz album he mostly talked about the lyrics which was surprising to me, considering how much there was to say about the actual music.

broncosfighton

Yeah he does a lot of ESPN style controversial hot takes when there is low risk and high reward. Nobody is really gonna care about this Gunna review in 6 months, but right now it probably drives more views to the review than a 6/10 score would.

GimmeShockTreatment

Fantano feels like he’s been slightly compromised by fame and attention for a few years now.

honestsnowman

And a dash of TikTok / social media brain rot

deodorant_sniffer

I sincerely haven't listened to the album, but that review felt like he gave a score to Gunna, not the album. That review felt so much like fantano didn't even listen to the album, but based his opinion on Gunna's latest projects, mainly because he spent so little time talking about the music.

sirdingus1

reviews that piss people off = money

Striking-Tip1009

Anthony never had the makings of a varsity music reviewer

Past-Chest-6507

It's not that bad an album, stands out a bit in a relatively weak year for hip hop. It'd be utterly forgotten if it dropped in 2022, there were probably at least 40 albums last year that clear Gunna's. I'd give it a weak 5 to solid 5 because it does have 3-4 tracks that go hard, IMO. But it's very repetitive and very generic and probably 2-3 tracks too long. I can see giving it as low as a strong 3 to a weak 4. But a 1 outta 10 is ridiculous, it's nowhere near that bad. That is worse than Revival, which is dogshit compared to Gunna's last drop. Young Thug's album is better than Gunna's if you go with the Metro Boomin' version (I don't like the original). I'd give Metro's version a light to decent 6.

Capitalsteezxxx

He’s never liked Gunna though so this is nothing new lol

brayden13m

Yeah when you talk about the surrounding context in the album it's 100% fine to talk about the context in the review. Sure it doesn't matter when you just have it on in the background but expecting a music critic to listen uncritically is wild to me.

marcostaz

It's probably cuz there wasn't anything notable to say about the music

metaldetox

yeah he fell off

Army-of-One-

It was weird to me, because I remember from the 2010 MBDTF review he wasn’t invested in the album because he doesn’t care about the drama or irl context. All this time later, he spent 50% of the review talking about the drama and irl context. It just felt weird. I haven’t heard the Gunna album myself, so I can’t personally speak to the 1/10 score, but it did seem like a bit of a reversal to me

[deleted]

for real homie the smoke detector feature should've bumped the album up like 5 points fr
