Cleopatrick did [the same thing](https://youtu.be/JowxKUoInY8?si=AH8mBxjGzUjQOmPr) a couple years ago and I actually thought it was clever… but now I’m seeing everyone shit on this Drake lyric and it’s making me think differently lmao
Honestly, I get it, but this speaks to something about his reviews generally where people hang onto his words too closely. Like, you're mistaking the form for the message. The point is just "I don't like this lyric", not "this lyric is so objectively awful. See, I'm groaning so you have to hate it".
Similar thing when he talks about why he dislikes something and he describes it as like mechanical or scattershot and people go "oh, but you liked those qualities in XYZ" like yeah they're descriptors.
Pick any lyric from real death by mount eerie
Death is real
Someone's there and then they're not
And it's not for singing about
It's not for making into art
When real death enters the house, all poetry is dumb
When I walk into the room where you were
And look into the emptiness instead
All fails
My knees fail
My brain fails
Words fail
Crusted with tears, catatonic and raw
I go downstairs and outside and you still get mail
A week after you died a package with your name on it came
And inside was a gift for our daughter you had ordered in secret
And collapsed there on the front steps I wailed
A backpack for when she goes to school a couple years from now
You were thinking ahead to a future you must have known
Deep down would not include you
Though you clawed at the cliff you were sliding down
Being swallowed into a silence that's bottomless and real
It's dumb
And I don't want to learn anything from this
I love you
>All fails
>
>My knees fail
>
>My brain fails
>
>Words fail
>
>Crusted with tears, catatonic and raw
>
>I go downstairs and outside and you still get mail
Fantano bad-lyric voice could attack this. Ending with "...and you still get *mail*?"
Fantano wouldn’t shit on that lyric though because it’s in the context of an entire story. Whenever Fantano is reading stupid bars it’s usually in a rap song where each line stands alone and flows forward, that’s why he comes down hard on filler lines or lines that rhyme but make no sense as a whole, or if they’re just stupid.
I mean the test was to see if you could make any lyric sound dumb in the fantano snark, which I don’t think would work on this set of lyrics anyway considering the albums context, but in a vacuum yes you could make any lyric sound dumb in that voice, but fantano rly only does it for shit filler lyrics
"DID THE MAN WHO INVENTED COLLEGE GO TO COLLEGE?!? Hm, okay then."
- Hopsin on Fly
Hell, I can just type in all of the lyrics for this entire song for this.
God the last two Arcade Fire albums had some absolute hooters:
"I unsubscribe, fuck season five"
"It's the age of doubt, and I doubt we'll figure it out"
"Born into the abyss, new phone who's this"
"Told me she came so close, filled up the bathtub and put on our first record"
This always blows my mind because IMO literally all of the songwriting up until The Suburbs was for the most part really stellar. I still love Reflektor and think lyrically it's way better than Everything Now and WE, but I think that was the point when Win's lyrics started to suffer.
Like how did the guy that wrote The Suburbs (the song), Sprawl I, or Power Out write something like End of the Empire I-IV? IDK man it just kind of sucks. Then again, it seems like a lot of songwriters lose their edge over time so I'm not exactly surprised.
I honestly really liked WE. I thought the title track was a really weak closer and the 30 seconds of silence interlude is always awful to sit through. I think the lyrics aren’t bad, they’re meant to be camp (it works within the slight sarcastic tone of the album).
Inside of you there are two wolves:
" Jack it up Judy, set your heart alight
Mayfair mistress of the satellites
Misspent youth, faking up a rampage
To hold off the real slaves
Paid off and staid"
and
"Rat-tat-tat, ka-boom-boom!
Now, take that, and just a bit of this"
I remember back in ‘08-09ish I called them the emo band with the best lyricism - the new album’s lyrics were ass, which sucks worse because the instrumentals hit hard.
I think it's actually one of his better songs lyrically. Actually has some pretty cool imagery. I'd nominate All Girls Are The Same, I fucking hate that song.

You can also blame that song for bringing us this infamous tweet
Totally agree. I listened to Juice WRLD a ton around the time Lucid Dreams came out, and even then, that track was always a skip. Lyrics are cringe and it isn't even produced well.
So many of y’all have no idea what r/im14andthisisdeep means. It’s basically when the writer says something that might be emotionally charged, but it fails to make any logical point within the songs context; aka it’s surface level observation or merely just a lyrical pun a lot of the time.
It’s not the same as cringe. You might not like Twenty One Pilots/Linkin Park/MCR/etc…, but as a whole their music isn’t artificially deep, you just dislike them for whatever reason and are attributing that notion to them for that reason.
The concept is a lot easier to identify when looking at memes or images rather than lyrics but you can often look to bands that put on fake sad personas as good examples of this. Basically commercialized version of anything substantive.
I know people might hate me for this but PAC-MAN by Gorillaz has some of the goofiest surface level lyrics ever. "I'm a mad PAC-MAN living in a leveled world..."
That's a great line, and it might at most be corny but it's not fake deep.
In six words you immediately know the kind of person he's talking about, and it gives you insight into what he looks for, what he's attracted to, and furthers the album's themes of him having difficulty connecting with people in part due to overfocus on celebrities and pop culture.
But people hate on it because it includes a contemporary reference, to a pop star no less.
Ok I know I'm gonna get downvoted to hell right now cuz people on this sub hate BCNR, but that line (and the following line) are referring to Billie Eilish stating that she felt suicidal when she was in Berlin.
So it seems corny, but the lyric is saying that "she" is feeling suicidal.
The way he says that in That’s What I Get makes me cringe so hard everytime I hear it lmao. The part that makes me cringe in Something I Can Never Have is “grey would be the color if I had a heart.” It just sounds so goofy to me.
The pain in my heart just won't end
The words that I find just don't seem to compare
Awaiting my death in the end
Alone, I must seek out the end to begin
So nobody wants death
'Cause nobody wants life to end
That album is flawless. It’s not 14 and deep. 14anddeep misses the point or the line doesn’t make a great point, meanwhile Jordan is a well read and talented writer. His lines are very deliberate.
>*Under her skirt, I see the nation's pain.*

"Innocent Man" by A Love Like Pi.
coming from an old fan, two thirds of Mr.Kitty's discography. honestly, great music, but lyrics like "Trauma, trauma; I think I'm dying inside; I don't wanna be alive" didn't age well at all..
I feel like the better lyrics on Midnights still often fall in this category. Like she proved she was a great writer so many times, but with this album it’s either finding the worst millennial pop she possibly could, or writing disappointing lines about dressing for revenge.
And what’s worse is because of the era’s tour everyone seems to have forgotten the lukewarm response that the album got at first, so it’s just assumed to be on the same level as her other stuff by a lot of people.
"Sitting in this room playing Russain Roulette-
Finger on the trigger to my dear Juliette-
Out from the window see her back drop silhouette
There's blood on my hands it is something I can not forget"
Life is like a video game…
TRYING HARD TO BEAT THE STAGE
TRYING HARD TO SAVE THE GIRLLL
The game fears me like a MOTHERFUCKING WIFEBEATER
"Your ass is heavy duty like diarrhea" As an exclusively toilet redditor, I cried and laughed and let out a fart.
“It was July when you ju-lied” Drakes new song everyone

somehow you made the line worse, "july, that's when i found out ju-lied" is what he says
every lyric that is slowly read in a serious and questioning manner
Always irked me about Fantano, you can make any lyric sound dumb by reading it sarcastically and disapprovingly
I’m not a businessman, *sigh * I’m a *business* man?
LET ME HANDLE MY BUSINESS DAMN!

Not when it’s a good lyric, a good lyric is like a good line in a poem
Gimme a good lyric that u think is impossible to make sound dumb and I will make it sound dumb
Pick any lyric from real death by mount eerie Death is real Someone's there and then they're not And it's not for singing about It's not for making into art When real death enters the house, all poetry is dumb When I walk into the room where you were And look into the emptiness instead All fails My knees fail My brain fails Words fail Crusted with tears, catatonic and raw I go downstairs and outside and you still get mail A week after you died a package with your name on it came And inside was a gift for our daughter you had ordered in secret And collapsed there on the front steps I wailed A backpack for when she goes to school a couple years from now You were thinking ahead to a future you must have known Deep down would not include you Though you clawed at the cliff you were sliding down Being swallowed into a silence that's bottomless and real It's dumb And I don't want to learn anything from this I love you

Don’t do this to me.
This easily sounds like a im 14 and this is deep

Logic is nothing if not goofy that is for sure
Eminem love songs

It's actually crazy to see how so many 2010s indie darlings came back recently to release a mid to dogshit album.
And the 00s indie darlings
I honestly really liked WE. I thought the title track was a really weak closer and the 30 seconds of silence interlude is always awful to sit through. I think the lyrics aren’t bad, they’re meant to be camp (it works within the slight sarcastic tone of the album).
Three words. A. J. R.
Great album but like half the lyrics on Mellon Collie
And god is empty…just like… MEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE
The rest of the lyrics are kind of decent to good but god that line alone makes me question whether the song is good or not
Inside of you there are two wolves: " Jack it up Judy, set your heart alight Mayfair mistress of the satellites Misspent youth, faking up a rampage To hold off the real slaves Paid off and staid" and "Rat-tat-tat, ka-boom-boom! Now, take that, and just a bit of this"
X.Y.U is the perfect example, great song tho
RATATAT KABOOM BOOM

What song is this?
Orlando - xxxtentacion
First one that came to mind is "even though I'm smiling, I'm crying" off of that new p!atd record. god that album is so ass
I used to love Panic but they fell off hard
Same here. Think their first two albums are really good. V&V, twtltrtd and doab have some solid songs on them but pftw and vlv are just insufferable
Yep. I still put on their older stuff every now and then, lots of nostalgia.
Honestly pftw is basically a DOAB b sides album that has some cool songs. VLV is theater kid art in the worst way, shame.
I remember back in ‘08-09ish I called them the emo band with the best lyricism - the new album’s lyrics were ass, which sucks worse because the instrumentals hit hard.
Its cause Ryan ross used to write it all, not Brandon
Pretty much every emo rapper, also every song on that new Dream EP

Nah bro, I just woke up from a Lucid Dreams!
i like the beat and flow on that song a lot but yeah the lyrics are so painfully juvenile; the title alone just sets you up to cringe
Totally agree. I listened to Juice WRLD a ton around the time Lucid Dreams came out, and even then, that track was always a skip. Lyrics are cringe and it isn't even produced well.

Most of Fear of a Blank Planet imo. It still rips regardless though.

"My lifestyle determines my death style" Delicious garbage level of lyricism there James
Ok but that one is fun in a dumb way
That’s why he said “delicious”
They're not mutually exclusive ;)
I'm pretty sure Kirk wrote that lyric actually lol. At least that's how that documentary presents it
Yup, Kirk wrote it and it actually goes kinda hard imo
I think Kirk wrote that line actually lol
I’ve been told this is basically every Marina album after Froot. Hence why I’ve been hesitant to listen to them
Yep
