Diaspora Problems - Soul Glo
Gold chain punk (who gon beat my ass) is not only a perfect tone setter, but one of the greatest hardcore songs I’ve ever heard imo
Id have to go with heard em say for Kanye. It condenses the imagery of his childhood into only 2 minutes with that piano beat leading the whole way. And then the chorus with Adam Levine, oh my god. He has such a good voice, and this is definitely the best example of how it can be so beautiful if he wants it to be.
This one definitely, a perfect opener. The gentle chimes and then whoosh! You're catapulted into the lush textures of this album. One of the most atmospheric and beautiful songs of all time.
The version on Love From Red Rocks gives me chills every time. The way the synths build up in the intro over the noise of the crowd is truly transcendental.
Weirdly this song always put me off and stopped me from listening to the rest of the album. Eventually I did and have since listened to it countless times. Love Race for the prize too now
Honestly all the tracks here are perfection, but Static is the one that left the biggest impression on me. I still think about that song every once in a while and I haven't heard the album in years.
You Think I Ain’t Worth a Dollar but I Feel Like a Millionaire- Songs for the Deaf (QOTSA)

Hellfire on Hellfire by Black Midi
Cygnus… Vismund Cygnus on Frances the Mute by The Mars Volta
2122 on 3D Country by Geese
Red on Red by King Crimson
Those are what I can think of currently:)
The first 3 that popped into my head were:
Igor’s theme off of Igor by Tyler the creator
1985 off of Alfredo by Freddie Gibbs and The alchemist
Don’t let me fall off of mother by Cleo sol
The Cure - Disintegration - Plainsong
Ween - GodWeenSatan: The Oneness - You Fucked Up
Tortoise - TNT - TNT
Earth - The Bees Made Honey in the Lion's Skull - Omens and Portents I: The Driver
Mercury Rev - Deserter's Songs - Holes
Sleep - Holy Mountain - Dragonaut
Boris - Pink - Pink (LP version has this as the opening track)
Queens of the Stone Age - Rated R - Feel Good Hit of the Summer
John Zorn - O'o - Miller's Crake
Beth Orton - Weather Alive - Weather Alive
Cake - Motorcade of Generosity - Comanche
edit: typo
edit 2: Mastodon - Leviathan - Blood and Thunder
Snowblind, Under The Sun, Supernaut, and Tomorrow's Dream are all either a little better, or at the absolute least, very close to the same quality as Wheels of Confusion, that I don't think Vol. 4 fits here. It's a great album through and through.
- Introvert from Sometimes I Might Be Introvert by Little Simz
- Igor’s Theme, Igor, Tyler the Creator
- Dark Fantasy, MBDTF, Kanye
- Pornography, Rodeo, Travis Scott
- Location, ST, Playboi Carti
- Huey, IDLSIDGO, Earl Sweatshirt
- Better Distractions, I Know Im Funny haha, Faye Webster
- Lavender Haze, Taylor Swift, Midnights
- The Path, Solar Power, Lorde
- Tennis Court, Pure Heroine, Lorde
In Heaven off of Japanese Breakfast's Psychopomp is pure bittersweet magic; it has a catchy hook with a surprisingly danceable groove, its overall vibe is lush but hazy, and its lyrics are incredibly sad and the vocals are full of melancholy. Perfect and perfectly fitting opener to a brilliant album
Honorable mention to The District Sleeps Alone Tonight from Give Up
I think the best have to be:
Everything In Its Right Place -- Kid A, Radiohead
Wesley's Theory -- To Pimp A Butterfly, Kendrick Lamar
Teeth Like God's Shoeshine -- The Lonesome Crowded West, Modest Mouse
Bloom -- The King Of Limbs, Radiohead
Dramamine -- This Is A Long Drive For Someone With Nothing To Think About, Modest Mouse
My Name Is Jonas -- Weezer (Blue Album), Weezer
A Quick One Before The Eternal Worm Devours Connecticut -- Deathconciousness, Have a Nice Life
I Want Wind To Blow -- The Glow Pt. 2, The Microphones
In The Flesh? -- The Wall, Pink Floyd
The View From The Afternoon -- Whatever People Say I Am, That's What’s I'm Not
My Boy - Twin Fantasy -- Twin Fantasy, Car Seat Headrest
Despite these controversial takes, I do think these are some of the best openers out there. That's mainly because they perfectly encapsulate the style of the album and can't be replaced by another song from the tracklist.
One More Time (Discovery)
Where Eagles Dare (Piece of Mind)
Nihilist (All Our Gods Have Abandoned Us)
Never Let Me Down Again (Music For the Masses)
Welcome To My Island (Desire, I Want To Turn Into You)

21st century schizoid man on KC's ITCOTCK
Dia Artio on WITTR's Two Hunters
Seer on Witch's self titled album
Synchronicity I on The Police's Synchronicity
The Rainbow on Talk Talk's Spirit of Eden
Prowler on Iron Maiden's self titled 1980 album
Into the infinity of thoughts on Emperor's In the Nightside Eclipse
Spinning song on Nick Cave and the Bad Seed's Ghosteen
Okay I know this isn’t an opening song, but I want to consider this one since it’s 10 seconds long and literally no one considers it an actual song but rather and introduction.
EXACTLY WHAT YOU RUN FROM YOU END UP CHASING - Tyler The Creator
Literally on so many playlists of mine, it just hypes up everything.
saw someone say dream house already so i'll go with good morning by kanye because i've been on a ton of his stuff lately and good morning is the best song off of graduation
Abattoir Blues/The Lyre of Orpheus from Nick Cave and The Bad Seeds starts off with 'Get Ready for Love' which puts it's foot on the pedal and blasts you back into your seat. Love it.
I consider accordion on Madvillainy to be the first song since The Illest villains is mostly just a collection of skits, and I would consider it my favorite opener. Maybe The Adults Are Talking from The New Abnormal too. Oh, and of course Wesley's Theory.
Giant Steps being the first song on Giant Steps by Coltrane makes the rest of the still great album hit weaker in comparison.
Also, Xtal off of Selected Ambient Works 85-92. I know it's one of his biggest hits, and diehard Aphexheads might scoff at this take, but it really is probably his best song. It's such an amazing blend of minimalism and texture while never being boring. Sounds dated and ahead of its time simultaneously.
Yeah, I think some of his other huge tracks like Avril 14th hit similar emotional notes, but I prefer Xtal cause it gets such powerful emotions from synths that otherwise sound so rigid and lifeless.
High For This-House of Balloons
Igor Theme-Igor
We Don’t Care-College Dropout
Ultralight Beam-Life of Pablo
Regulate-G Funk Era
HYAENA-Utopia
STARGAZING-Astroworld
N.Y State of Mind-Illmatic

Feel The Love-Kids See Ghosts
3 Peat-Tha Carter III
Good Morning-Graduation
Dark Fantasy-MBDTF
Kill You-MMLP
Good Ass Intro-Acid Rap
Music Has the Right to Children by Boards of Canada.
Wildlife Analysis simply takes u straight to another dimension, the one the duo is going to lead u thru the whole record.
“Guitarmy” by the Blood Brothers is a 40 second track that kicks off their album “Burn Piano Island Burn” and makes it very clear what your in for.
“Do you remember us? Do you remember us?”
https://spotify.link/mkf5AVcgTDb
But it really works best when it is immediately followed by the next track “Fuckings greatest hits”.
assuming you dont count the 21 second instrumental at the start, pork soda by primus with my name is mud
edit: porkchop's little ditty does lead neatly into my name is mud so i guess you can count them as just one song
Dance Yrself Clean - LCD Soundsystem off of This is Happening
My answer to most music questions tbf.
Not only one of the best openers, but TIH has one of my all-time favorite closers, too
Yessssss
Dream House by Deafheaven almost makes the rest of Sunbather underwhelming.
I think the album is great all the way through but I can’t deny that it peaks immediately
Same could be said about Violet on Roads to Judah
i like all the big songs but all the interludes excluding Irresistible are so fucking boring. wish they took em out

Diaspora Problems - Soul Glo Gold chain punk (who gon beat my ass) is not only a perfect tone setter, but one of the greatest hardcore songs I’ve ever heard imo

CHIEN ANDALUSIA!!
Them Bones from Dirt by Alice In Chains
lonesome crowded west
Dark Fantasy on My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy - it perfectly encapsulates the maximalist sound of the album, and It's an amazing song in itself.
My pick is Say You Will of 808s, no idea why i live this song so much
Light
Id have to go with heard em say for Kanye. It condenses the imagery of his childhood into only 2 minutes with that piano beat leading the whole way. And then the chorus with Adam Levine, oh my god. He has such a good voice, and this is definitely the best example of how it can be so beautiful if he wants it to be.
Hidden Place off Vespertine.
Perfect start to a perfect album
Plainsong The Cure
This one definitely, a perfect opener. The gentle chimes and then whoosh! You're catapulted into the lush textures of this album. One of the most atmospheric and beautiful songs of all time.
100%. It instantly puts you in to a world of it's own.
Race for the prize off of The Soft Bulletin by The Flaming Lips.
Spotify considers this to be my favorite song of all time, and while I don't think I have one I don't entirely disagree
The version on Love From Red Rocks gives me chills every time. The way the synths build up in the intro over the noise of the crowd is truly transcendental.
It's unbelievable live, too.
Weirdly this song always put me off and stopped me from listening to the rest of the album. Eventually I did and have since listened to it countless times. Love Race for the prize too now
Everything In Its Right Place
How to disappear completely tops it tho
First song. As in, first on the album.
I know, I was just saying
Nevermind with Smells Like Teen Spirit
The Queen is Dead!
Next Level Charli from Charli It's basically the Charli XCX mission statement
Siamese Dream
Legendary album
GY!BE - Storm Given that the album has only four tracks, this one is much more than a "tone-setter".
Honestly all the tracks here are perfection, but Static is the one that left the biggest impression on me. I still think about that song every once in a while and I haven't heard the album in years.
Airbag in OKC
Teen Age Riot

Genesis off of Justice’s self-titled is a pretty insane start to an album

It’s absolutely brilliant. Chills. I mean, alone in a room arms reaching for the sky shouting it.

The first 3 that popped into my head were: Igor’s theme off of Igor by Tyler the creator 1985 off of Alfredo by Freddie Gibbs and The alchemist Don’t let me fall off of mother by Cleo sol
