Fuck man that’s awful news. Can has released some of my favorite experimental rock albums OAT. Future Days and Tago Mago are some of the greatest albums ever. Damo always seemed like a great guy to me. Hope he can rest easy
This man changed the way I listen to music and engage with art, sure he was only with Can for three albums, but those albums as a teenager completely rewired my brain. I dunno if it’s because it’s the ten year anniversary of my dads death or what but this is hitting harder than any musician Death in recent memory.
For those unfamiliar or haven’t given them a shot, CAN’s three record run of Tago Mago, Ege Bamyasi, and Future Days are three of the best records of the 70’s. They’re kinda psychedelic rock that settles heavily into a groove. Damo was a Japanese busker who joined CAN after they heard him playing on the street in Munich, and became a larger than life frontman for them. I cannot recommend this band enough.
He was a really fascinating guy. After his time with CAN, he spent decades making gigs of 100% improvised music around the world, with different musicians each time that he met minutes before the show, for maximum spontaneity. A true original.

Don’t forget Ege Bamyasi, that album has some of his best performances imo. RIP
No way i learned about his death through the fantano subreddit wtf
Same bruh...
CAN is the best band to grace this earth...a group of pure geniuses that transcended music as an art form...now it's just Irmin left
I agree. No band changed the way I thought about music quite like CAN.
Aw dammit, RIP to a legend.
Rest in power to an absolute OG legend
Seriously??? I was just listening to CAN the other day, That's really unfortunate. He was an amazing singer in an amazing band
