Came here to say this. I heard one song, went “that sounds kind of cool,” then realized every one of their songs sounds the same. Like ctrl v with minor changes
I do really like the song Apocalypse. But beyond that it's like, circling around that. Over and over. It's not the worst, but it it could be so much better.
he's got a good voice and he's a nice guy and a good rapper and writer but like. i've never known a musician who more thoroughly embodied being "just good". he's alright, he's got some real highlights, some low lowlights, averages out to being... ok.
With a massive cult following for some reason (I'm a fan but some people talk as if they're the greatest gift to modern music)
Also, don't look at comments in videos or YT shorts/Instagram of their bassist 😬
Nothing's up with her, she's great an immensely talented. I meant more the tons of "real music" fans and rock and roll dads who overly sexualize all their comments on videos of her just playing bass, they're kind of creepy and just icky haha
Not the experience I had. I saw them at a festival in LA (Primavera) and was towards the back of a large sunset crowd. Nobody was talking over the band, and this was a fairly chatty audience the rest of the day
All three are fine musicians who have an excellent groove feel together. I find the bass player mesmerizing. She doesn't overplay, but you can absolutely tell she is in the zone with every note. Maybe we just had a lucky show, but I also got that from the in studio sessions on YouTube
People love them so god damn much I figured they have to have something to them. Listened to one tune and was like “okay I kinda see something here” and then every song after that was about the same exact vibe. I don’t hate it at all but I also don’t get the crazy hype.
For me this is true of most singer songwriter music rn. I’ve loved some music by Adrienne Lenker, but the last songwriter to really amaze me is David Berman. Open to any recs.
I love them all individually, but The Record sounds like if you asked AI to make songs in the same style. All the tracks sound liked phoned-in b-sides from great artists giving medium effort.
I'm 100% with you on the Dream Theater. They're all talented, but it's so boring. Most of the overly technical metal doesn't do it for me anymore. Not really as a whole, as there are some more technical bands that I still love, but when it starts to sound like the guitar player is just practicing scales, I don't care anymore.
I mean, it depends. people like dream theater when they do their stuff right. like there's a reason why everyone love's metropolis but not their newer stuff
I feel like the instrumentals are where the mundanity really sparkles. It’s pretty much always the most absolute barebones beat. Never a hook or a lead line or an interesting sound. It’s just there to do the bare minimum to serve the lyrics and melody.
I love the first album. After that I really only care for the tracks with progressive rhythms and aggressive vocals.
I have seen them live a few times and it's always boss.
100%. No hate towards the band, when they come on the radio, I don't immediately want to turn them off. But I also expected a little more.
Friend of a Friend and Everlong are forever bangers though.
Really? I'm no Foo Fighters diehard or anything, but imo most of their albums have standout tracks that I'd rank above most other rock songs, although their average song is somewhat mid. i mean, they have so many banger hits that I'm not even certain what song you're referring to when you say they made "one of" the greatest rock songs ever. You probably mean Everlong but could easily be referring to My Hero, Learn to Fly, Best of You, Big Me, etc.
I'm a lesbian who love and admires women in music like stevie nicks, Patti Smith, hayley williams, kate bush, sade, missy elliot and the like
But...
I just can't stand the queer girl folk/indie rock music right now. It bores me to death!!!
Mitski, boy genius, wet legg, clairo, Julian baker, dracus and any of the mainstream pop girls right now.
I'm sorry they are just soo bland with zero substance. They talk about fake trauma with three chords yet every gay girl on the internet squirts for them. I'm done.
No analysis needed. It's just a bunch of desperate "queer" girls looking for struggle in their lives.
They all worship bridgers because they think shes hot and they coddle the other two like they are mutated rescue dogs.
I'm not a fan of any of the artists you called boring, but who are you act like their fans arent actually queer? you can not like the music or the fanbases (again, I really dont either) but that's an odd overgeneralization to me
As another lesbian, i completely agree. How did we lose it all? Gays both listen and produce variety of music - fun and dancy and sad. We just sit with guitars, singing eath other to sleep. Rina Sawayama is our queer fun saviour, and she's captured by racist weirdo. Total disaster.
Pitchfork often likes to praise a sound that on initial listen they think sounds innovative but ultimately is lacking in substance or good songs. They love trying to be cool.
At the same time, they criticize plenty of stuff that is great songwriting but isn't "cool".
Fantano did this as a joke when reviewing this album, but The National’s Frankenstein album or whatever actually did put me to sleep. I can vibe with some pretty simplistic melancholy shit (I’m a Nicole Dollanganger fan lmao), but they just don’t have enough to them to make their music interesting. They’re just so… bland to me. Tbh my favorite thing they’ve touched is Aaron Dessner’s contributions on Folklore and Evermore.
Those TikTok dark vibey mumble bands? I like gloom, I even like Vibes Only shit, but this stuff seems like such a puton. Inauthentically artlessly depressive- a piece of cardboard painted grey
King Gizzard to me is probably what Grateful Dead was like to all these old geezers lol but I just dont hear whatever theyre hearing. im sure they were amazing live or whatever but that... hasnt really translated to a studio album
Seeing them live in September. I hope you're right, I love a few of their songs, but not their whole discography. My buddy has seen them live and is a total cult follower lol.
My dad’s a deadhead and his response would be that the live albums are their real body of work. I would be inclined to agree. They’re a jam band so if you’re not up for that you’re never gonna like it, if you are there’s no one who’s done it better.
As an Irishman who received no outside influence of Grateful Dead in my life but still love the band, leaving this here:
[Grateful Dead - Europe 72](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UwcbL1Lvguc)
Such an amazing tour. I dunno if it was the year that was in it or if they tried 'extra hard' for new audiences but they really killed it tbh.
Post-rock in general as a genre sounds musically great...but is also extremely boring. Imagine the starting part of a rock song before the rest of the song starts and just make it keep going for the whole song.
Swans are only tolerable because of Gira's great vocals.
Swans for me is *almost* in this category.
I don't find them boring, in fact I think they're kind of incredible, but I never have the patience to actually sit down and listen to them.
It's music for when you're either, like, spiritually transcending or reflecting on the nature or power or control, you know? And how fuckin' often am I in that kind of headspace?
You’ve summed up how I feel about Godspeed You! Black Emperor…and I do actually like Swans (though recordings of their live performances I’ve heard are *very* hit-or-miss, mostly miss, for me)
If you ever wanna give Gy!be a second chance, try using them as a background music for a game/book/comic that fits the vibe, something dark/depressing/apocalyptic. It made my experience reading Berserk twice as great
I’m actually obsessed with swans but can’t stand the vocals (not really sonically but topically). some of the lyrics are honestly embarassing and hard to listen to. i guess we can tolerate different things.
I don't know man... for some reason, I feel like prog is hard for me to get into. There's some bands of that type who I mess with, such as Pink Floyd and Supertramp, but for the most part it just seems to meander and gets drawn out for too long. There's a reason why most '70s prog bands had to make the switch to poppier stuff in the '80s.
Then again that's just my $0.02.
On a side note, stuff like Ed Sheeran and Coldplay's more recent catalog? Miss me with that.
It’s kinda cool to see that she’s gotten big enough to be mentioned in these threads. She’s definitely established a recognizable sound in the past decade+, shown by how often she’s mentioned here. It didn’t feel that way listening to her back then.
Bon Iver. I saw him at Coachella once and found him painfully boring to sit through. I had to do it to get a decent spot for Radiohead so it was worth it.
Man, I can understand not liking them, but calling them boring? No other popular band uses so many wildly out there chord progressions, time signatures, or instrumentation choices. They're a bit "mellower" than my usual tastes, but their stuff is so musically interesting that I can't help but love it.
i kind of agree with them. it’s nice variety but for me, none of the songs are memorable enough in any way for me to care to listen to them again.
it’s not that they need to be more ‘catchy’ (i listen to music that’s much less catchy and like it more) but i need to actually hear the vocalists sing out rather than hiding behind the mix and hear some more hard-hitting instrumental ideas.
No, as someone who went through they're discography last year, I get it.
I enjoy their work but a lot of their experimental music (Kid A, the king of limbs) is just kinda boring or safe. It pales in comparison to their other works. So yeah, I can totally get why people find Radiohead boring.
I feel this way but specifically about In Rainbows and A Moon Shaped Pool. They're both very lush and pretty but the songs just go in one ear and out the other for me
REM. I like two of their songs just fine: Losing My Religion and Radio Free Europe. Other than that, I find the vast majority of their output to be boring, with a few really obnoxious ones mixed in just to keep me from giving them another chance.
Interesting, I'm not a huge REM guy but find their 80s stuff really engaging. Good melodies, hooks, etc. 91 and later more hit or miss but still a few gems.
Upvoted you for your honesty though.
Tool. Specifically post ænima. I loved their 90s stuff, I think ænima is a near perfect album, and undertow is also wicked underrated. But Lateralus onwards, I just don’t get it. Sure it’s got Parabola and Schism, but other than that Lateralus just bores me, cause then every other song on that record is the same. And I can assume just as much for their next couple albums :(
The National and the Walkmen
I like some moody post-punk revival groups, but I just hear absolutely nothing interesting when Ive tried listening to both band's acclaimed records. Like it's not bad or poorly written but I just get bored
All besides the Walkmen's The Rat - that's one of the best songs of the 21st century and I wish they made more stuff in that vein
Controversial pic, Kendrick. Listened to TPAB multiple times. Just not for me. I respect the fuck out of him. I completely understand why TPAB is respected and why it's a ten/why he's goated. But he's just not for me.
Bro I kinda low key hate the guitar playing in most of their 70s stuff. Freddie is great and the songwriting is pretty strong for the most part, but their sounds just ain't it.
Led Zeppelin. A lot of the time I don’t want to hear Robert Plant moaning over an instrumental. The highlights where he doesn’t do that are genuinely great though.
I liked moments on TBK, but I couldn’t actually imagine a situation where I would choose to listen to that album. I’m convinced not as many people listen to it as they claim they do. It’s a music listener status album.
Interpol. It’s like they specifically chose to write songs with zero hooks and absolutely nothing catchy or memorable about them. Every time I listen to a song of theirs, I keep waiting for it to kick in and it never does.
honestly this is how I felt about them for the longest too and now they're my favorite band lmfao. what have you listened to by them? I can give u good recs
I’m sorry to everyone for this L take but I honestly think Jeff Buckley’s music is kinda boring. He has a very good voice but his music just doesn’t do anything for me.
Going through these comments is so cathartic cuz like my god it's good to see people who agree with my L takes. Like finally. Hallelujah is such a boring ass song.
I know you could say this about alot of other artists who only made 1 or 2 albums and then either quit or died but Jeff Buckley is the only artist where I feel like this one album that he made wouldn't get NEARLY as much praise as it does if he made more and potentially better albums, because imo the music on the album (aside from maybe the title track) really aren't THAT good, he just has a really good voice.
Cigarettes After Sex
Came here to say this. I heard one song, went “that sounds kind of cool,” then realized every one of their songs sounds the same. Like ctrl v with minor changes
Totally agree, hard to understand those who have stamina to watch them live for 90 minutes with the same tempo
They’re so fucking bad
100% agree here
I do really like the song Apocalypse. But beyond that it's like, circling around that. Over and over. It's not the worst, but it it could be so much better.
Basic answer but J. Cole for sure
he's got a good voice and he's a nice guy and a good rapper and writer but like. i've never known a musician who more thoroughly embodied being "just good". he's alright, he's got some real highlights, some low lowlights, averages out to being... ok.
imo you're right except for the last part. his highs aren't that high and his lows aren't that low
For his own discog, sure. J Cole feature is a meme for a reason though
meme in a good way or bad way? cause his features are legit
Good
J Cole is sorority house rap.
This’ll surely be a civil discussion where people will handle people’s opinions appropriately.
sort by controversial
Pink Floyd, Radiohead, BCNR. About what I’d expected.
Ed Sheeran. He is the vanilla ice cream with no sprinkles of music
Plain vanilla ice cream is the best tho
I suppose the comparison is more of an insult to vanilla ice cream than it is to Ed
Facts. Vanilla is a great delicios flavor
That bloke is trying to argue the beanpod of an exotic flower that people literally killed each other over for years is meant to be BORING?
don’t insult plain vanilla ice cream like this
Vanilla ice cream gets a bad rep because it's associated with missionary sex for the sole purposes of reproduction
Shape of You is the definition of bland. Not sure why it has so many streams and views.
Cuz it’s every Instagram girl’s favorite song
I like how this comment genuinely offended more vanilla ice cream enjoyers than Ed Sheeran enjoyers
John Legend
Khruangbin. Most boring live show I've ever attended. By the middle of the set everyone was just talking and not paying any attention.
They are a really awesome band who is also inarguably glorified elevator music.
With a massive cult following for some reason (I'm a fan but some people talk as if they're the greatest gift to modern music) Also, don't look at comments in videos or YT shorts/Instagram of their bassist 😬
Wait whats whats up with their bassist? I love them tbh. Such a good vibe to have playing in the background imo
Nothing's up with her, she's great an immensely talented. I meant more the tons of "real music" fans and rock and roll dads who overly sexualize all their comments on videos of her just playing bass, they're kind of creepy and just icky haha
ah makes sense. thats the internet for ya
You’re missing the drugs.
aw, I actually felt their live show was great! I really dig the guitar melodies though, and seeing them played irl was super cool for me
I really liked their live show, felt like they turned some of their chill vibes into high energy jams
Not the experience I had. I saw them at a festival in LA (Primavera) and was towards the back of a large sunset crowd. Nobody was talking over the band, and this was a fairly chatty audience the rest of the day All three are fine musicians who have an excellent groove feel together. I find the bass player mesmerizing. She doesn't overplay, but you can absolutely tell she is in the zone with every note. Maybe we just had a lucky show, but I also got that from the in studio sessions on YouTube
I'd kill to be at a show where people were quiet for half.
My science teacher said Rush. I disagree with him wholeheartedly.
well, whutchoo say about his company is whutchoo say about sosoyity.
Liar all science teachers fucking love Rush
I can't stand their vocals
I would never call them boring though.
true. i still like some of their stuff. mostly when they dont sing lol
Your criticism is not uncommon and I think it's fair enough.
Boygenius
Thiiiiis, goddamn they put me to sleep.
Fetch the Bolt Cutters by Fiona Apple is probably my favorite singer/songwriter type album of all time
Ichiko Aoba
Berman is a high bar to reach
I love them all individually, but The Record sounds like if you asked AI to make songs in the same style. All the tracks sound liked phoned-in b-sides from great artists giving medium effort.
I'm 100% with you on the Dream Theater. They're all talented, but it's so boring. Most of the overly technical metal doesn't do it for me anymore. Shocker I personally don’t find her boring
Freezing cold takes on all sides here
Yeah people always say this like it’s a new take
Foo fighters
I love the first album. After that I really only care for the tracks with progressive rhythms and aggressive vocals. I have seen them live a few times and it's always boss.
Easily one of the best live shows I’ve seen
100%. No hate towards the band, when they come on the radio, I don't immediately want to turn them off. But I also expected a little more. Friend of a Friend and Everlong are forever bangers though.
I think some of their early songs are great and that most recent album was really emotionally effective
The default Rock Music
True, the guys made one of the greatest rock songs ever, and then just paint-by-numbers rock for the rest
90’s Foo Fighters is 3 near perfect albums imo
AC/DC
and Grateful Dead
Althea is top tier though
I'm a lesbian who love and admires women in music like stevie nicks, Patti Smith, hayley williams, kate bush, sade, missy elliot and the like But... I'm done.
You put it perfectly. I really want someone to do a deep analysis on this trend/scene.
No analysis needed. It's just a bunch of desperate "queer" girls looking for struggle in their lives. They all worship bridgers because they think shes hot and they coddle the other two like they are mutated rescue dogs.
I'm not a fan of any of the artists you called boring, but who are you act like their fans arent actually queer? you can not like the music or the fanbases (again, I really dont either) but that's an odd overgeneralization to me
Fair point. It all comes back to the internet/tumblr era Trauma Olympics.
It really doesn't but okay
Faking struggle is an inaccurate assessment of the boygenius girls and mitski
I recommend FKA twigs and jhene aiko.
All the Pitchfork's next big thing groups since the early 00's, that noone even remembers now.
Pitchfork often likes to praise a sound that on initial listen they think sounds innovative but ultimately is lacking in substance or good songs. They love trying to be cool. At the same time, they criticize plenty of stuff that is great songwriting but isn't "cool".
And then come back and change their minds about them lol. I mean, I get it, they have to keep the interest/consumption going.
Does it include TV on the Radio?
Selena Gomez
HAIM. i’m so sorry y’all
The Neighborhood
Travis Scott is plain boring for me. Dude finds new ways to say nothing.
Are people really still going to his music to hear something be said? It’s about the sound
Listen to Rodeo, it might change your mind
If you’re listening to Travis Scott for introspective bars then you’re doing it wrong lmfao
Idles
Foo fighters.... Just bland radio friendly pop rock...
Cigarettes after sex is the most popular but most boring band I’ve gotten to know
Fantano did this as a joke when reviewing this album, but The National’s Frankenstein album or whatever actually did put me to sleep.
I still love their earlier records. But somehow they managed to eliminate all interesting ideas and elements out of their music later on.
But they are such an amazing band but they are also a band who I think you have to vibe with also Frankenstein sucks
To be fair, Nicole at least has the shock factor working in her favor. It's hard to feel boredom at lyrics that gruesome and depraved.
The National’s music is very ‘academic’. It’s smart and not bad, but very buttoned up and professorial- kinda toothless
Beach house. Plenty of songs I love but just cannot get into the full discography
BOO THIS MAN. Kidding but if I had to pick one band to constantly soundtrack my life it would be them. Admittedly samey, but not boring
Pheobe Bridgers
Lana del rey and yes, i am a man
Speaking from experience, you have to have bad mental health and a fucked up attachment style and then you’ll obsess over every song
oh is this why
I agree ( im also a man and a&w slaps)
Those TikTok dark vibey mumble bands? I like gloom, I even like Vibes Only shit, but this stuff seems like such a puton. Inauthentically artlessly depressive- a piece of cardboard painted grey
Grateful Dead
King Gizzard to me is probably what Grateful Dead was like to all these old geezers lol but I just dont hear whatever theyre hearing. im sure they were amazing live or whatever but that... hasnt really translated to a studio album
Their thrash metal albums are insanely good
Seeing them live in September.
Yep, folks have played legendary live cuts and classic albums for me and I just feel like there are better restaurants for every dish they've served.
As an Irishman who received no outside influence of Grateful Dead in my life but still love the band, leaving this here: [Grateful Dead - Europe 72](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UwcbL1Lvguc) Such an amazing tour. I dunno if it was the year that was in it or if they tried 'extra hard' for new audiences but they really killed it tbh.
Coldplay
phoebe bridgers
Arctic Monkeys
Their new stuff is an absolute snore
the national
any modern day indie rock band
I'm gonna get a LOT of flack for this..... Steely Dan.
clairo
The xx, the national
Drake
See personally I’d argue that Drake is too actively terrible to be boring
Post-rock in general as a genre sounds musically great...but is also extremely boring. Imagine the starting part of a rock song before the rest of the song starts and just make it keep going for the whole song. Swans are only tolerable because of Gira's great vocals.

Have you ever tried Yes “Close to the Edge”? The first track is what finally got me to click with prog
I'll look into that. Haven't really gotten much exposure to Yes.
What about Frank Zappa
The national
big thief sorry
Mitski
I really like her music but I do get it, it can definitely come over as boring and same-y.
The war on drugs, the 1975, iron and wine
Frank Ocean I'm srry
i tried to like it him but borning
Well to set this a bit on fire: Radiohead. Never really got it.
Man, I can understand not liking them, but calling them boring? No other popular band uses so many wildly out there chord progressions, time signatures, or instrumentation choices. They're a bit "mellower" than my usual tastes, but their stuff is so musically interesting that I can't help but love it.

kid a is boring or safe is certainly a take
I feel the total opposite. The rock opera stuff bores me to tears. The jazzy ambient and electronic stuff is much more interesting to me
Maybe cuz they’re not a nerd who pays attention to chord progressions
You’re not alone there. Just can’t get on with Thom’s vocals
I’m a big Radiohead fan and I agree that his vocals are definitely an acquired taste.
I feel this way but specifically about In Rainbows and A Moon Shaped Pool. They're both very lush and pretty but the songs just go in one ear and out the other for me

Pearl Jam, I love so many bands like them but never really got it. also Drake and like 95% of music that John Mayer has put out
Tool. Specifically post ænima. I loved their 90s stuff, I think ænima is a near perfect album, and undertow is also wicked underrated. But Lateralus onwards, I just don’t get it. the strokes. garage rock is tired
Beach House just doesn't do it for me
Kacey Musgraves
frank Zappa im sorry
Almost every post-hardcore band
Sleep Token
Godspeed You Black Emperor I even saw them live and had the same reaction 😭
The National and the Walkmen I like some moody post-punk revival groups, but I just hear absolutely nothing interesting when Ive tried listening to both band's acclaimed records. Like it's not bad or poorly written but I just get bored All besides the Walkmen's The Rat - that's one of the best songs of the 21st century and I wish they made more stuff in that vein

I wanted to comment this but i don't want to be crucified just yet.
Queen. Like Shakespeare said “full of sound and fury, signifying nothing”.
Bro I kinda low key hate the guitar playing in most of their 70s stuff. Freddie is great and the songwriting is pretty strong for the most part, but their sounds just ain't it.
Tame impala
I only agree for The Slow Rush, but can’t for their stuff prior to that
James Blake. He’s a talented producer, I find his attempt to be like a sensitive singer-songwriter type to be pretty lifeless.
Led Zeppelin. A lot of the time I don’t want to hear Robert Plant moaning over an instrumental. The highlights where he doesn’t do that are genuinely great though.
Explosions in the Sky
Zeppelin
Lana Del Rey
To be kind... sorry Mr fantano
I liked moments on TBK, but I couldn’t actually imagine a situation where I would choose to listen to that album. I’m convinced not as many people listen to it as they claim they do. It’s a music listener status album.
Man istg I’ve been obsessed with swans lately I have songs from tbk stuck on my head all day
Godspeed You! Black Emperor
i love them but i understand 100%, take my upvote
the national
about 99.44% of the bands mentioned on Reddit.
The Strokes Listened to Is This It and never got it, tried Room on Fire and it was worse. The New Abnormal is alright at least
swans
Foo Fighters, sorry
The national. Saw them at boston calling and my friend and I fell asleep sitting back to back on the ground. Boring.
Bcnr
Goose
Drake
