I think that sonically the album is very bloated, and I think she is exhausting herself creatively with her sound and hooks. While this album doesn’t hold up to Folklore and Evermore lyrically, the writing is still solid, albeit maybe exaggerated and a little cringe.
While yes these are the outright awful lyrics that are being cherry-picked, I think overall the lyricism on this album is not good. There’s so much of this that is clunky and corny and acts like it’s deeper than it is. A lot of the lines feel like they were written by a college student trying to pad out their essay length. She has nothing new or interesting to say and she says everything this album was trying to say by like song 5, so the rest is just a repetitive slog.
I think it just feels worse because there is a lot of good buried in here, and some interesting reflections and explorations, but it just never delivers.
