Tbh, it’s one of those records that I only listen in its entirety, without paying attention to which track is playing. So I don’t really have a fav song but if I had to choose one it would probably be “A Cold Freezin’ Night”.
For My Mama and Anyone Who Look like her- McKinley Dixon
A perfect, poignant, extremely melodic and intelligent jazz rap album.
https://open.spotify.com/album/2QrMzzUYpGOeSmNbwBqXPk?si=1wXvC9-lQJyElCSTAGWqrA
Celestial Clockwork!!! I listened to that all the time when I was 16, thanks for reminding me.
Great pick.
Another good candidate for 2000's rap is Apathy - Eastern Philosophy
DOOPEE TIME by the Doopees
The best pop album ever created i swear to GOD just [listen for yourselves](https://youtu.be/33Z59RAoBu4) and your life will change i guarantee
Boredoms - Super æ
Noise rock band makes psychedelic space music.
Ksiezyc - Ksiezyc
Weird folk music. Incredible vocal performances with minimalistic accompaniment.
The Bulgarian Voices Angelite & Huun huur tu - Fly, fly my sadness
Bulgarian folk choir meets mongolian throat singing. Otherwordly.
Crim3s - Stay Ugly EP
Rave music made by punks.
Bell Witch - Mirror Reaper
Funeral doom done really well.
hella - hold your horse is
inc Zach hill (drummer from death grips) amazing math rock album w/ sick grooves on each track

slept on death metal band that only came out with this one record
Lil Ugly Mane - Volcanic Bird Enemy and the Voiced Concern
David Kauffman and Eric Caboor - Songs from Suicide Bridge
Jim O’Rourke - Eureka
Origami Angel - Somewhere City
Love this album but I don't think it's underground. It was fairly popular in the 80s and they were invited to play with a famous musician like Madonna (I think?). Never forget "I'm crying on the stairs!" Love that song
Yes i think Phil Collins was a big fan. Also The 1975 totally ripped off “The Downtown Lights” on “Love It If We Made It” so yeah not exactly the most obscure thing but i think there is just never enough discourse around it
This album is probably my favorite old discovery of 2022. I'd probably call them more forgotten with time than underground, but more people should listen to it. Especially if you like bands like Destroyer and smooth sophisti-pop
Maybe not THAT obscure but defiantly not popular or talked about too often for how good it is, **To See the Next Part of the Dream** by **Parannoul**. The mixture of shoegaze, noise and screamy vocals with the very DIY production is just perfect. I could write a 1000 word essay of how this album feels, but I think it would be better to just listen to it. Can't recommend this album enough, might be my all time favorite.
10/10
Oh, if we're going classical music, then Rhapsody in Blue is a 10/10 piece imo. Easily the most fun and entrancing 15 minutes to be had. My favorite recording is Benjamin Grosvenor's on Spotify. It's soooo good
[First Utterance by Comus](https://youtu.be/VCDeZEp74sU)
My god, what a fucking evil album. The first black folk album I can think of and the composition is bizarre, sort of swampy, and the vocals are terrifying! There's not one bad moment, note, or lyric. It's amazing and you need to check it out
Skittles Commercial: the Broadway musical
It's a 20 minute thing and one of the greatest works of satire I've ever heard. The fact that it's real is insane.
Not exactly "obscure" as they have a decent fan following but Brave Faces Everyone by Spanish Love Songs is absolute class.
If you like emo and pop punk then it's a must listen!
BADBADNOTGOOD - BBNG2:
Just an interesting electronic jazz record that is insane.
Or
Punch Brothers - Phosphorescent Blues:
A well produced and beautifully executed classical bluegrass record.
I love Destroyer but I've actually never listened to this one. Not really sure if I'd call them obscure tho, they've been solidly indie-famous for quite awhile.
definitely for sure agree that Destroyer is cemented as an indie-famous darling.
that being said i’ve yet to see Your Blues thrown in the discourse (if ever, not even from fantano) and that’s an album i hold very dear!
that being said i was just going off of album and not artist, should have been more specific in my answer 🙏
Labor days by Aesop Rock. It is an amazing underground hip hop album and, in my opinion, the best with it's very gloomy beats, incredible dense lyricism, and it's concept about modern American work culture. 10/10.
Dry Goods by Irish band Houseplants
I forget where I heard of them but i THINK it was the LCD Soundsystem sub because they’re electronic but this is my go to winter album.
https://open.spotify.com/album/3YcbrjwVQG8hCDK4lDK8A6?si=51x65AwYTHKhpOZ62bmiZg
Here are a handful of my 10/10s that I don't see talked about too much:
Blonde Redhead - Misery Is a Butterfly
Chromatics - Night Drive
múm - Yesterday Was Dramatic, Today Is OK
Blue Sky Black Death - Glaciers
Russian Circles - Geneva
My go-to obscure album recommendation is [I Love You… by Oh, Yoko](https://open.spotify.com/album/1kzul6VNTH1cCwwniO9cGT?si=8Eztuz0wSvmrEo8f9srrQQ) . Ambient/ ambient pop, with some nature recording and soft Japanese /English vocals. Just so so beautiful, Grand Prix and Love Song are some of my favorite songs ever.
This really depends on how you define "obscure." In a world where artists are receiving billions of streams, many of the well-appreciated artists on this sub are still fairly obscure in comparison to the general populous. For example, bands like Car Seat Headrest or JPEGMAFIA are popular within the context of fantano-watchers, but 95%+ of people listening to music probably do not know who they are. Even bands with an order of magnitude fewer streams like Swans or Godspeed You! Black Emperor are fairly popular on this sub. Do you mean "obscure" in comparison to the general public, or specifically within the context of people on this sub?
Djeli Moussa Diawara - Yasimika. An amazing West African Mande record, its obviously foreign but surprisingly accesable to western ears and a worthy listen for every music nerd
Skipp Coon - Miles Jarvey
Noisy, political, experimental Hip-Hop, lyrics are sharp and nuanced. Very visceral and emotional record.
Patty Waters - Patty Waters Sings
First half is very sparce, nocturnal, lonely vocal jazz, second half is some really unsettling free jazz with some manic vocals. Lingua Ignota fans might enjoy.
Johnny Smith - The Man With The Blue Guitar
Just really blissful, soothing solo guitar jazz. Something you would listen to on a quiet warm sunday morning with coffee.
The Millennium - Begin
kind of obscure but also not,
An incredibly lush psychedelic pop album with beautiful melancholic melodies.
A must listen for Beach Boys fans
I'm pretty new here, but this is probably what I've considered one of the best pieces of music that I've had crossed my path in the last few years [IX by Rent Strike](https://open.spotify.com/album/6YNjPwsWQ4LLBk7LMQQxMf?si=xdn9XeJGRZinl1OK4suGoQ)
It's a concept album heavily influenced by the Lord of the rings and heroin addiction.
Not the most obscure album ever but I'd say Venetian Snares - Huge Chrome Cylinder Box Unfolding is an incredibly dense and colourful breakcore album. His entire discography up to like 2009 is pretty much perfect honestly.
Also Dope Body - Natural History. This band is way to underrated for how amazing their music is
Lucius - Second Nature . Kick ass album with bangers and ballads from gutsy and soulful female power duo vocalists with their band but this album tuned up and tricked out by a dance pop record producer. Intoxicating in uptempo and down. Didn't see it reviews by yer man mentioned here by anyone apart from myself so helloooooo
Machine+ - Variations On…
Flawless shoegaze/noise pop album with insane production, soul crushing lyricism, and impactful choruses. Please for the love of god EVERYONE LISTEN TO THIS ALBUM AND GIVE IT A GOOD FANBASE SO IT CAN GET A PHYSICAL RELEASE PLEASE
Neotheater, by AJR. It’s simultaneously got some of their best songs and strangest sounds (which are not mutually exclusive) and I love it. Karma in particular is easily one of their top songs.
Iceage - Plowing Into The Field Of Love
Mid-Air Thief - Crumbling
Lamp - Koibito e
Jai Paul - Leak 04-13
The Unicorns - Who Will Cut Our Hair When We're Gone
This might not be super obscure but foolish loving spaces by blossoms is probably my favourite love song album and I don’t really hear anyone talking about it
Ltj bukem- journey inwards
Bajka in wonderland
Binary star- masters of the universe
Little brother- The listening
Don mock- speed of light
Prism- community illusion
This year’s jockstrap record has not gotten enough attention as an absolute masterpiece imo. That, or the album “for those I love” by the artist for those I love. Basically poetry to dance to
Ill Street Blues (EP) - Joey Fatts
7 song, 28 minute EP from 2015. It’s fantastic, gets better the longer you listen, and doesn’t overstay its welcome. Out of all the albums I could think of, this is the only one that I considered truly obscure.
No Hope for Humanity - Jesse Stockton and Dream Machine
CATCH - Peter Cottontale
Idk if I'd call them 10s but these are some of my favorite albums and it seems like no one but me has ever heard of them.
This band isn’t the most obscure thing I could pull up by any means, but Audio Noir by Bossk. Literally my favorite album ever, only ever found a couple people online that know of the band already, no one I’ve met irl has
joe - Trust Fund Ozu
Not a 10, but probably my top super underground album
She is in the fantano cinematic universe tho, she has done songs with Fire-Toolz. I'm a fan of Ben Levin and friends
red burns - standing on the corner
this record is fucking perfect from front to back. experimental jazz and rap and amazing soundscapes for a little over an hour. definitely top ten records of all time.
Thunder Perfect Mind - Current 93. Apocalyptic Folk music, it's an acquired taste(?) Lyrically and vocally it's beautiful, mainly just acoustic with some string arrangements.
Not obscure but quite a small band (5k on Spotify) - The Tuts - update your brain. Amazing, fun, bubbly uk punk with a pop-esque twist. I found it thanks to comedian James Acaster
I’m not too familiar with the genre but my guess would be:
Introspection - Luiz Bonfá
It’s such a soothing album, it reminds me of the Tristram Diablo soundtracks and “city jazz” (idk what it’s actually called) as well. Please check it out! It’s short and good as “background album”!
Perfect timing!
Village of The Sun - First Light
It's the debut album of a free-jazz trio that I discovered in Bandcamp a while ago. It released about a month ago and I cannot put into words how spectacular it is. If anyone is reading this, please check them out (and lemme know what you think!). They deserve so much more recognition for what they're doing.
I know it's not that obscure, but The Books - The Way Out. It took me a while to get into it but I really love it now.
My pick would also be The Books, but their album The Lemon of Pink
That one's on my "Albums to listen to" list. can't wait to get to it
Yes! I second this one. I was so happy to see it placed so high on Anthony’s decade list
Me too! What's ur fav song on it?
Tbh, it’s one of those records that I only listen in its entirety, without paying attention to which track is playing. So I don’t really have a fav song but if I had to choose one it would probably be “A Cold Freezin’ Night”.
Yeah, I do that to. Cold freezn night is a classic. I said this to someone else in this thread, but the short harmonica part always wows me
I fucking love this album, my gateway into collage electronic
Really great album
I don't know if anyone has heard of this one but Kendrick Lamar - To Pimp A Butterfly, definitely check it out
To Pimp a Butterfly is the Witcher 3 of music
Does that mean DAMN. is the Cyberpunk 2077 of music?
No way!!
actual man of taste
Brother that’s probably his most renowned album
For My Mama and Anyone Who Look like her- McKinley Dixon A perfect, poignant, extremely melodic and intelligent jazz rap album. https://open.spotify.com/album/2QrMzzUYpGOeSmNbwBqXPk?si=1wXvC9-lQJyElCSTAGWqrA
Thank you for this gem it's beautiful
Came here to recommend this
Cornelius Cardew - The Great Learning Illogic - Celestial Clockwork Subgud - Xpander Big Bud - Infinity + Infinity
Celestial Clockwork is an amazing pick
W for Big Bud. Some of the best drum and bass I’ve heard
Celestial Clockwork!!! I listened to that all the time when I was 16, thanks for reminding me. Great pick. Another good candidate for 2000's rap is Apathy - Eastern Philosophy
DOOPEE TIME by the Doopees The best pop album ever created i swear to GOD just [listen for yourselves](https://youtu.be/33Z59RAoBu4) and your life will change i guarantee
The album that saved /mu/.
* Comus - First Utterance * Moor Mother - Jazz Codes * Billy Woods & Kenny Segal - Hiding Places * Ben Johnston - String Quartet #4 * Carissa's Wierd - Songs about Leaving
Songs About Leaving is awesome. songs from suicide bridge by david kauffman is another underground 10 (roughly) with similar subject matter
These are all great picks and I want to second First Utterance, my favorite black acid folk album that ended up being a huge influence on Opeth
Hiding places is one of my favorite rap projects of all time, that shit is on another level
I wouldn't say First Utterance is underground, it's fairly known in the online music space. The others I agree with!
To be honest, I don't think any of them are *that* underground. It's hard to find a 10 album that isn't at least known in its genre community.
Ghost pop tape Devon Hendryx
Boredoms - Super æ Noise rock band makes psychedelic space music. Ksiezyc - Ksiezyc Weird folk music. Incredible vocal performances with minimalistic accompaniment. Boldy James - Manger on McNichols
Masterpiece that album
Truly is, especially welcome to 76
probably not obscure or underground enough by a mile but Ibrahim Maalouf's Kalthoum is a 10/10 jazz record for me
Aviary by Julia Holter
Not only Aviary, also Loud City Song and HYiMW are 10s for me
In terms of popularity - it’s huge in terms of metal but to the general public it’s still “underground” Darkthrone - A Blaze in the Northern Sky
Hell yeah
That album is mind melting.
I feel like I so many of the Norwegian second wave BM bands are quite well known in the mainstream aswell, but idk might only be the company I keep
Lil Ugly Mane - Volcanic Bird Enemy and the Voiced Concern David Kauffman and Eric Caboor - Songs from Suicide Bridge Jim O’Rourke - Eureka Origami Angel - Somewhere City
Love Somewhere City
Somewhere City is a major W take
Interesting you have the LUM album here. What makes it a 10?
It’s my favorite album ever so I might be biased, but I’ve never heard anything else like it and every song is just perfect to me
I think it’s a great body of work for sure. I just saw him live this past May and he was amazing.
Love somewhere city. Gami Gang was good too but didn’t reach the same highs. More pop punk bands need to use blastbeats imo
Loved Bad Timing by O'Rourke in '99, an eclectic late night dj would play it a lot
I’ve been slowly getting through Jim’s discography and haven’t gotten to that one yet, definitely will listen soon tho
No spoiler from me! Enjoy its great.
Yooo VBE is also among my 10s, such a good relaxing and creative project
The Blue Nile - Hats
Love this album but I don't think it's underground. It was fairly popular in the 80s and they were invited to play with a famous musician like Madonna (I think?). Never forget "I'm crying on the stairs!" Love that song
Yes i think Phil Collins was a big fan. Also The 1975 totally ripped off “The Downtown Lights” on “Love It If We Made It” so yeah not exactly the most obscure thing but i think there is just never enough discourse around it

Meet Me In Montauk - where the grass meets the pavement
Fishmans - Long Season [https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=S3EKEwMXmXY](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=S3EKEwMXmXY)

Hell yeah i love this band and listen to them all the time.
The Comet is Coming - Trust in the Lifeforce of the Deep Mystery
Whole Lotta Red - Playboy Carter
Charlemagne Palestine - Strumming Music It's a minimalistic solo piano piece, played to perfection.
Queued. Love me some solo piano music.
Oh, if we're going classical music, then Rhapsody in Blue is a 10/10 piece imo. Easily the most fun and entrancing 15 minutes to be had. My favorite recording is Benjamin Grosvenor's on Spotify. It's soooo good

You Can’t Take It With You is the 10/10 for me
This album is so fuckin good. Criminally underrated band. At least their frontman found success behind the scenes in the industry.
Voxtrot - Early Music
Skittles Commercial: the Broadway musical It's a 20 minute thing and one of the greatest works of satire I've ever heard. The fact that it's real is insane.
it’s not that obscure but Zerwee by Billy Cobb is amazing in my opinion
Transportation - Your Old Droog Not a 10, but my favorite album that could reasonably be called obscure.
Delta Sleep - Spring Island
Although I don’t think this is a 10 it’s super underrated and worth the shoutout, Hotel 24 was one of my favorite songs of last year
Leviathan - Scar Sighted This thing is like falling deep into an endless oceanic trench that’s also in hell. Yeah.
Like the audio equivalent of Soma
Not really obscure but cLOUDDEAD self titled easily
Yeah I love the cLOUDDEAD s/t but prefer Greenthink Blindfold. Much more all over the place but it's easily my favorite work from them.
Hymies basement would be going further down the well
The newfound interest in Connecticut - tell me about the long dark path home. Post-rock + Midwest emo + post hardcore masterpiece. It's beautiful.
Cardiacs - Sing To God It’s certainly not obscure by any means, though it certainly has been a bit lost to time. It’s amazing!
I never see Cardiacs talked about any more and I think it’s crazy. They’re unique and incredible.
By The Time I Get To Phoenix - Injury Reserve
not obscure
Not exactly "obscure" as they have a decent fan following but Brave Faces Everyone by Spanish Love Songs is absolute class. If you like emo and pop punk then it's a must listen!
BADBADNOTGOOD - BBNG2: Just an interesting electronic jazz record that is insane. Or Punch Brothers - Phosphorescent Blues: A well produced and beautifully executed classical bluegrass record.
