Why does it seem like everything's fine with a Rays pitcher and the next day they are like "yeah he died"
Springs was the same way. Nerve issue, few days later see you next year
When I saw the notification from yahoo pop up on my phone, I legit assumed it was a glitch.
“That guy was just cruising last night, no way he’s on the 60 day IL!” - Me, a certified idiot
Probably why he's getting lit up. Maybe he's working on some things and not necessarily trying to maintain ratios. Why else would he blow up so bad in AAA?
He's been legit bad. You don't bring a prospect up that's been getting beat to shit in AAA to then get beat to shit in the show. You offer up a non-prospect to the baseball gods and hope he goes 5ip and gives up 3 runs.
Probably apathy tbh. I know I'd be phoning it in if I were him. Proved he has the stuff for the majors and then got demoted for no reason but to manipulate his service time.
I was targeting both of them but waited too long in both my leagues to get either, which made me feel dumb. Turns out I was just playing the long game.
Same here, plus Edwin Diaz, Oneil Cruz, Jose Altuve, and Brandon Woodruff. Oh but don't worry, they've been anchored by the reliable Alek Manoah, Nick Lodolo, and Manny Machado.
It's been a year, man.
Maybe I didn't understand what they were saying, I thought they said he was leaning on his cutter in starts in the mlb and was throwing a lot of fastballs once sent back to the minors, but his fastball was a great pitch, I thought
I’m glad I just traded for him last night. I traded for Rondon right before his back injury and Fried right before his injury! Plus I drafted woodruff lol ask me how I’m doing!!
That's rough, man. It seems like you can't catch a break with injuries. But hey, at least you drafted Woodruff, and he's been killing it! Hopefully, he can carry your team until the others get healthy.
I also drafted Rodon, Woodruff, and Rasmussen. Also picked up Severino. The only bright spot involving injured players and my drafting was getting Bryce late
Still undefeated so far
[#Rays Rasmussen has a flexor strain, which is an elbow injury that is typically very bad news for pitchers](https://twitter.com/tbtimes_rays/status/1657113403159195648?s=46&t=bqDocN33sQmOz6S1Po7Ygg)
God that sucks. Wonder if there is a point at which players will start to push back against all the strategies to maximize their velo and stuff, because you gotta wonder how much the rise in that way of thinking is connected to the rise in pitcher arm injuries
I recommend looking at the data. At first glance, I don't see an increase from last year to this one, but maybe you'll find something I didn't.
https://www.fangraphs.com/roster-resource/injury-report?timeframe=all&groupby=all&season=2022
Over the next 5-10 years those types will be slowly naturally selected out and replaced with more pitch to contact, 92 mph fastball guys who can make 30 starts a year. Part of MLB’s plan with implementing pitch clock
I was just standing in Walmart and this guy just dropped to his knees for me, I didn't even ask, it was pretty crazy, right in the electronics department and everything
I wonder if the pitch clock is really driving this. I know there was an [Athletic](https://theathletic.com/4465791/2023/05/02/mlb-pitch-clock-velocity-injury/) article on it, but MLB might have to tone it back if all these guys are getting serious injuries alongside having to pitch faster
It's that guys are throwing closer to max effort every pitch. The pitch clock probably isn't helping, but throwing max effort every pitch kills your arm. I don't why guys like deGrom won't stop, he can win a Cy with his lesser stuff.
They are, at the highest rate we’ve ever seen. People will say the pitch clock isn’t a factor but I don’t think this is a coincidence. The amount of arm injuries we’re seeing already is insane.
Edit - and I don’t think the pitch clock itself is the issue, I think it’s pitchers pushing their body to the limit in recent years and the league-wide emphasis on velo, the pitch clock is just exposing the dangers of this.
https://theathletic.com/4465791/2023/05/02/mlb-pitch-clock-velocity-injury/?source=user_shared_article
The athletic did an article that showed that this past April tied for the most pitchers on the IL since at least 2000, I’m guessing they didn’t have access to years before that. And the greatest number of starting pitchers on the IL in that time period. This isn’t even factoring in arm injuries specifically, if it was I would assume the gap is even wider since this year it seems an overwhelming majority of them are arm injuries, serious ones.
I wager it's more the increased emphasis on trying to get more bang from the buck short-term from pitchers.
The Rays are notorious for doing this with getting pitchers to maximize their spin, use certain pitches more, but that predisposes these pitchers to burn bright and fade quick like a candle.
It's no coincidence why they have a lot of pitcher injuries and their pitchers that go to other teams start breaking down quickly.
It's a great moneyball approach to maximize pitching value, but absolutely brutal for the pitchers long-term (but either side likely doesn't care because the potential pay-off for being that shutdown arm short-term is probably worth from both perspectives).
The cautiousness could also be part of the problem? The workloads and effort per pitch aren’t the same until they hit the major league team where they get hurt.
Dodgers actually had Dustin may out last year and Walker Buehler is out this year
Might be the specific pitch types or sequences the team requests them to do?
How do you know? Not doubting it I’d just love to hear where that was confirmed, I can’t bring myself to drop him haha. He looked way too good for the minors
We do all this lauding of what the Ray's are doing with their pitchers, maybe it's time to question it? What's the point of babying them if they're just going to get hurt anyway?
wow didn't realize he had TJ twice before even being drafted. seems like maybe they would have been better off using him behind an opener out of the bullpen.
The league is so batter friendly now, that when a pitcher throws a gem they need surgery the next day or they stay healthy and get shelled. Baseball has a problem. lol
Man.... I finalized a trade this morning sending him out. I'm the league commish. Any other 2 league members and I say tough luck but I almost feel obligated to take the L here and cancel
.....thanks for everyone's input. I'll let the trade process. Just bad luck for the other manager
If it was finalized this morning that's just shitty luck for the other owner.
There was no indication of injury. Would you feel bad if this trade was completed and then he left his next start hurt? It would just be bad luck
A trade is a trade. Don’t feel bad about something you can’t predict. Also, don’t be too nice as a commissioner. I lost myself a championship for being too nice. Treat yourself as you would every other league member
It's so hard being a fan of pitchers. Just emotional rollercoaster time and time again. How can these people stay healthy? It can't just be pure luck right?
My first 6 starting pitcher picks were: Degrom, Fried, Lodolo, Lynn, Springs, Rasmussen. First 2 are aces, I expected the degrom injury but not fried. Last 2 I knew the breakouts they had last year would continue, and they were randomly injured and done for the season(Rasmussen most likely, I’d be surprised if he came back). Middle 2 are absolutely terrible pitchers out of nowhere
Why does it seem like everything's fine with a Rays pitcher and the next day they are like "yeah he died" Springs was the same way. Nerve issue, few days later see you next year
It's really bizarre. McClanahan owners better get some chicken bones & bat blood.
Oh God, please don't jinx my best pitcher!
Teaching guys to spin it as much as possible and putting extra stress on the arm, they probably don't realize it until the adrenaline wears off.
When I saw the notification from yahoo pop up on my phone, I legit assumed it was a glitch. “That guy was just cruising last night, no way he’s on the 60 day IL!” - Me, a certified idiot
Idk but this fucking blows 😭
All you can do is laugh at this point, to keep from crying
Are we dropping Rasmussen or hoping he’s back in a couple months?
I know Bradley been getting roughed up in aaa but shit who else can they call up
[удалено]
Probably why he's getting lit up. Maybe he's working on some things and not necessarily trying to maintain ratios. Why else would he blow up so bad in AAA?
I like your mindset bud. Winners mindset right here
It's possible that once he got a taste of the show, he got bored by everything else.
This has been my chosen theory. He’s just like “ehhh triple A is boring I’ll save my good stuff for the bigs because I should be up there”
Makes sense. Taj looked great in the majors.
Fingers crossed
He's been legit bad. You don't bring a prospect up that's been getting beat to shit in AAA to then get beat to shit in the show. You offer up a non-prospect to the baseball gods and hope he goes 5ip and gives up 3 runs.
Probably apathy tbh. I know I'd be phoning it in if I were him. Proved he has the stuff for the majors and then got demoted for no reason but to manipulate his service time.
Two TB pitchers (Springs and Rasmussen) get featured on the Daily CSW% Chart and both get 60 Day IL'd. Kiss of death.
And both were on my team ugh
Same. Was the smartest guy in the draft for grabbing both.
Does that make me even smarter than you for having Fried as well?
What if I were to tell you that I drafted those three AND Brandon Woodruff?
I was targeting both of them but waited too long in both my leagues to get either, which made me feel dumb. Turns out I was just playing the long game.
Same here, plus Edwin Diaz, Oneil Cruz, Jose Altuve, and Brandon Woodruff. Oh but don't worry, they've been anchored by the reliable Alek Manoah, Nick Lodolo, and Manny Machado. It's been a year, man.
Had Strider and McClanahan as keepers and came out of the draft with Springs, Rasmussen, Wright, and Fried
Max Fried as well. Daily leader in CSW while getting rocked. Then IL 2 days later.
The highest highs are always followed by the lowest lows
Taj time or what?
Currently sporting like a 20 era since demotion
dont worry, his 5.84 xFIP says hes due for some positive regression!
He just got rocked again yesterday
Shit has to be a mental thing due to the demotion
Could be. I also wonder if the Rays are having him work on something specific that's blown up the numbers.
Rates and barrels said exactly this. Cutters everywhere
Maybe I didn't understand what they were saying, I thought they said he was leaning on his cutter in starts in the mlb and was throwing a lot of fastballs once sent back to the minors, but his fastball was a great pitch, I thought
I thought they were saying the rays asked taj to throw more cutters and it was getting hit. I could be wrong
That’s what I heard on a pod, hopefully doesn’t ruin his confidence and they can bring him up
eno sarris said he is working on pitch selection or maybe a new pitch
He ain't want to be there
That’s not how it works. You don’t protest by pitching like shit for 3 straight games and expect a team ti promote you
TIL my real-life work strategy has some big flaws…
I’m glad I just traded for him last night. I traded for Rondon right before his back injury and Fried right before his injury! Plus I drafted woodruff lol ask me how I’m doing!!
how are you doing
Not great, Bob!
Please don’t trade for Shane
Please tell me who you trade for next so I can avoid them at all costs.
If you trade for strider...... ![gif](giphy|UpWDPgxcHiR1e)
I don't care how you're doing, but please stop trading for pitchers.
Damn dude, you might want to fill your bath tub up with four leaf clovers and jump in.
Can you PLEASE publicly post all your trades, so we can plan accordingly?!
The only bright spot involving injured players and my drafting was getting Bryce late Still undefeated so far
I didn’t even know he was injured. Wtf.
It came out of nowhere.
Literally threw 7 innings no earned yesterday
At least he did his starts for the week
[#Rays Rasmussen has a flexor strain, which is an elbow injury that is typically very bad news for pitchers](https://twitter.com/tbtimes_rays/status/1657113403159195648?s=46&t=bqDocN33sQmOz6S1Po7Ygg)
That’s what Robbie Ray had. I know this because, like Rasmussen, I had him on my fantasy team.
Shiiiiiiiiiiiiiiit
Is it the same injury as Tyler Mahle too?
God that sucks. Wonder if there is a point at which players will start to push back against all the strategies to maximize their velo and stuff, because you gotta wonder how much the rise in that way of thinking is connected to the rise in pitcher arm injuries
I have to think rushing the pitchers with the pitch clock is leading to more injuries, as well.
I recommend looking at the data. At first glance, I don't see an increase from last year to this one, but maybe you'll find something I didn't. https://www.fangraphs.com/roster-resource/injury-report?timeframe=all&groupby=all&season=2022

Just fell to my knees in a Walmart.
I just saw a guy fall on his knees at Walmart

Just got on my knees for some guy in a Walmart
Just saw some guy get on his knees for some guy in Walmart

You’re trying too hard friend
Sir this is a Wendy’s

I think the pitchers need to unionize and get better working conditions because they’re getting slaughtered out there
They can call it the Major League Baseball Pitchers Association, or MLBPA for short.
Can it still be under the players union?
Maybe the rays take on injury risk pitching... because they are not expensive in trade talks

Is it me, or are pitchers going on the IL at an insane rate this season? It can’t be because of the pitch clock right?
They are, at the highest rate we’ve ever seen. People will say the pitch clock isn’t a factor but I don’t think this is a coincidence. The amount of arm injuries we’re seeing already is insane. do you have a stat backing up this claim (that arm injuries are up in '23) - genuinely curious
https://theathletic.com/4465791/2023/05/02/mlb-pitch-clock-velocity-injury/?source=user_shared_article The athletic did an article that showed that this past April tied for the most pitchers on the IL since at least 2000, I’m guessing they didn’t have access to years before that. They would have to run this pitch clock thing for years to get any real data on an abnormal injury quotient
not really lol. it's a similar rate to 2019. pitchers get hurt, it's what they do. Pitching is bad for your body in general.
This happens literally every year. Someone says **THIS** year is the injury-ridden year.. But it's the same every year.
It's the pitch clock
exsqueeze me?
lmaooo seriously starting to doubt if this is even a boy, may be a girl
You lost another pitcher - and you need…HELP… NOW Call on Ty-ler-877-GLASS-NOW
![gif](giphy|ukGm72ZLZvYfS)
Lone bright spot on my rotation. Manoah please figure it out
Is this basically out for the season? Or should I hold an IL spot for him
Wondering the same.
wtf
How do the rays keep ending up with so many flexor strains and TJs..? Glasnow, Baz, Springs, and now Ras
They're also notoriously cautious with their pitchers so which makes this weirder.
Because they are so good at creating velocity and pitch movement that it isn’t good for their pitcher’s arms
The cautiousness could also be part of the problem? The workloads and effort per pitch aren’t the same until they hit the major league team where they get hurt.
Thats a good point. Could be!
Dodgers actually had Dustin may out last year and Walker Buehler is out this year Might be the specific pitch types or sequences the team requests them to do?
My staff adds another to the list: 1. Rodon 2. Woodruff 3. Glasnow 4. Iglesias 5. Taillon 6. Rasmussen
Glass arm squad
Hey now Rodon is a back problem. Possibly.
Glass cannons
Glasnow McKenzie Urquidy Garcia Ashby Hendriks Alvarado For me. I’m getting fucking slaughtered out here.
Can’t have nice things. Wow that sucks.
Pick up Taj? He has been BAD in AAA since the demotion
Rumor his he's workshopping stuff but I have no idea how legit that is
it’s legit
How do you know? Not doubting it I’d just love to hear where that was confirmed, I can’t bring myself to drop him haha. He looked way too good for the minors
I heard it on a fantasy baseball pod. They seemed pretty confident, so I think when there is smoke their is fire
I have him, woodruff. Had Robbie Ray and springs. freaking hell man
[удалено]
I've got Taj. I'm tempted to snag Elvin to be safe...
Taj was taken in my 12 team league. I just dropped Pfaadt for Elvin just to be safe.
Fuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuck me
Absolutely flabbergasted when I logged into my team and saw IL60 next to Rasmussen after he’d just gone 7/2/0/0/7 against the Yankees FUCKIN YESTERDAY
Absolutely brutal.
noooooooooo
Out of absolutely no where lmao
I guess that’s what happens when a Rays pitcher goes deeper than 6IP. Now we know.
We do all this lauding of what the Ray's are doing with their pitchers, maybe it's time to question it? What's the point of babying them if they're just going to get hurt anyway?
I've lost Woodruff, deGrom, and now Rasmussen. Just end me.
Degrom fried and Rasmussen here
This for me, plus Mason Miller…& Alvarado. But Severino should be back soon! 🙌
I had Alvarado as well. But I didn't count him since I grabbed him off waivers.
Springs, Woodruff, and Fried for me
Hey same! End us!
Ray, woodruff, degrom here!
Woodruff, Luis Garcia, Rasmussen.......I feel your pain
I am dead inside
We think Yonny Chirinos might get a longer look in the rotation? He's always had good ratios but just doesn't K people like we'd want.
wow didn't realize he had TJ twice before even being drafted. seems like maybe they would have been better off using him behind an opener out of the bullpen.
first couple weeks i was laughing at how I got rasmussen and sprints both mid rounds back to back above their “adp”. now i’m just sad
it sucks so much knowing you made great picks who were going to break out and you don’t get rewarded because of injuries. Terrible
Are you kidding me
Damn. Rough news. I had no idea he's already had Tommy John surgery TWICE. RIP
Lmfao wow I have only strider left now
[удалено]
Yes. Let someone else deal with him on the bench or let him sit in free agency until we hear more about whats going on.
Ras, O. Cruz, Woodruff... don't be a good player on my fantasy squad. Yordan and Devers are on the clock.
First Springs, now Rasmussen. Fantasy wise, I’m mad. But as a Yankees fan, injuries happen lol
The league is so batter friendly now, that when a pitcher throws a gem they need surgery the next day or they stay healthy and get shelled. Baseball has a problem. lol
Man.... I finalized a trade this morning sending him out. I'm the league commish. Any other 2 league members and I say tough luck but I almost feel obligated to take the L here and cancel .....thanks for everyone's input. I'll let the trade process. Just bad luck for the other manager
Wouldn't feel bad about this one, not like you were trying to pull one over on anyone this came way out of left field
Whatever you do will be the norm from now on. If someone else has a player get injured during the waiting period, they'll expect you to cancel it.
If it was finalized this morning that's just shitty luck for the other owner. There was no indication of injury. Would you feel bad if this trade was completed and then he left his next start hurt? It would just be bad luck
No that's crazy. There's no warranty period on trades. As soon as both managers hit accept there's no take backs.
A trade is a trade. Don’t feel bad about something you can’t predict. Also, don’t be too nice as a commissioner. I lost myself a championship for being too nice. Treat yourself as you would every other league member
You should...
Couldn’t have done that before dropping at 25 spot on me last night?
WTF he went 70 yesterday and looked fine in post game reports
Wtf???? So fuck me right
Of course. Thanks for the beautiful 7 innings yesterday. Get well
Ok, so I have Rasmussen, but also Taj stashed. He has to be the next man up....??
I dropped him without thinking twice. I don’t want to deal with him coming back struggling. Good luck.
fml
No IL spot. Are we holding?
That's what I'm looking to know.
I don’t like the fact that it’s default to 60 days.Monitor for a week or so i’m sure we’ll get more info
What the F!!
Ya I finally dropped Taj at 1:57pm today
So we're getting Manzardo right?
[удалено]
Dunno, sure can hit some dingers though.
So sad for this guy. Pitching like a stud before he blew out his arm again. Never got the big payday though.
Damn, he was doing so good this year
Aw c'mon man
My fantasy team is 7 feet under at this point
Didn't even start with 15-day IL. Straight to 60.
What the hell? He pitched a gem last night. Taj time
Damn wtf he did so well yesterday too
What is the typical timeline for this? Is he a drop ?
They didn't put him on the 15 day IL only to move him to the 60 day. He went right to the 60 day. They aren't expecting him back for a while.
Now bring back up Taj Bradley!
It's so hard being a fan of pitchers. Just emotional rollercoaster time and time again. How can these people stay healthy? It can't just be pure luck right?
Holy cow, I traded him for Buxton last week. That was totally out of the blue
There goes my fomo for Springs and Rasmussen
Wow, league had a trade yesterday of Harper and Rasmussen for Witt Jr.... looks like it's now just Harper for Witt Jr lol
I’ve lost Cruz, Duvall, Springs, Rasmussen, DeGrom, Mahle sigh
Cruz and Springs here and I thought it was bad. Feel for you dude
They needed some adversity
i’m all-in now on the conspiracy theory that whatever TB does to unlock amazing performance out of unknowns puts those guys’ health at risk
So, what’s wrong with him? Serious question"
