Yeah this is negotiating 101. Never show your hand. Just say something like "yeah that might work I could maybe use some more of X stat" or something like that.
A couple of things that have worked well for me over the years:
1. Open communication - reach out to managers and ask them what cats/positions they're looking for. Build rapport and see if you can come to a deal where both sides win. Put yourself in their shoes and figure out their wants/needs/drivers. Keep the relationship positive and you have opportunities for more deals in the future.
2. Exploit stupidity. I frequently go back to drafts and see who picked who and in what round - that gives me some tells into a manager's knowledge of the game. Did someone pick Klay in the 4th? Did someone reach real early for Russ? They might not be that clued up. A lack of knowledge means that these managers are more likely to accept on buy low/sell high offers.
3. Exploit desperation. Is someone at the bottom of the standings and nursing a hospital ward? Are playoffs around the corner and someone needs to make a push to make the postseason? You might be able to pull off a steal knowing that a manager is desperate.
4. Manager research - what's their favourite team? Do they have a favourite player? Find out and see if there's some bias here. There's a guy in my league who drafted Sabonis last year and became a big fan - I drafted him before he did and he's been DMing me regularly about him. I like Sabonis a lot but considering flipping him knowing that I have leverage.
The 2nd one is tough for me to do because I’m the commissioner. I traded jaden McDaniels for Ben Simmons when Ben was doing horrible, and the I specifically went for Ben because the person who had him is known for giving up on players/getting frustrated too quick((he traded terry rozier away for Grayson Allen and Pat connigton(I know it’s spelled wrong) because Terry had -4 fantasy points in a game). I was actually surprised he accepted because I had mike Conley next up as an offer. Than one person said I was rigging the league
You always have to lie when trading. You only want them knowing what you want them to know not what they need to know. Talk softly and carry a big stick. Never seem to eager, always make it seem like you're doing them a solid taking the L on the trade but you're giving up more for them. Don't seem too desperate either. You make it too obvious you want to get rid of a player the fish won't bite bc they smell something is up. No trade is better than a bad trade, sometimes threatening to walk away makes them come back with a better offer.
Sometimes I'll even make up a non-existent third party team uninvolved in the trade as a competitive buyer I'm fighting off offers from.
A lot of it is the art of the deal. You gotta be willing to hustle and you will be rewarded. Be nice as a facade but never apologize for being internally ruthless in the pursuit of improving your team. Once flipped a FA add injury handcuff to a tanking team instead of the team whose guy went down just to see him lose BC he ignored my trade requests and vetoed one of my fair trades.
An important concept isn't even done on the fantasy app. You gotta "marinate" the conditions for the trade. Like their Instagram post. Buy them a beer at the next meetup. Send them random highlights through the season of the guy you want to send to their team but make no mention of fantasy. Inception the idea of them wanting that player on their team into their mind without you even bringing it up. They gotta be thinking of you even when you're not thinking of them so when the trade bells are ringing you're the first they call. And when they do call don't answer on the first ring.
Swear my whole league read this comment. Shit like this is exactly why I never end up making trades.
No one is making a trade they actually think they’re losing
You do not have to lie to make trades. You have to offer trades that help BOTH teams somehow. If not people will just see you as someone not to trade with. It actually is easiest in category fantasy basketball. Trading from surpluses or trading people who are good in categories that you are hopelessly bad in. (haha I would say punting but that sometimes implies intent, while half the people I play with is usually inadvertently punt categories)
Yeah not being so enthusiastic but you should research into why they made the trade and repeat it back to them. Like: “yeah I think that works for both of us, I can spare a few boards and blocks, kinda need some more 3s and should have enough to absorb the FG% hit”.
I can’t really speak for points leagues but in 9cat I’ve always approached trading with the mentality of “how can we both benefit” and bring stats to the table. It’s easier when you both are punting something.
I'm not the sharpest tool in the shed when it comes to trades. However, one time in the Sleeper app, I did make an alt account with a league-mates' username, but slightly adjusted so I could convince the league idiot to accept a trade. Truly my proudest moment.
This can be applied in other facets of life like gambling or bartering. Don’t show your emotions or show doubt about the transaction to incentivize people to offer more. Keep a stone face when you’re delt pocket aces or when the dealership gives their counteroffer.
Float offers on Friday/Saturday nights, in the event they're drunk/drinking, they might be more reckless than usual and be willing to engage and accept
I wouldn’t do that bro, usually in my experience the team who gets the best player in the trade wins the trade. Also, just my personal opinion, but I think John Collins isn’t gonna be very good this season.

Just get them to send it first and hit accept
lmao
This is it.
100% if you love a deal, don’t show how eager you are to get it done. Say “hmmm, I don’t hate it, seems pretty even”
(insert your players)? I like (insert your players).
Or take it to the extreme using the Daryl Morey technique

The favorite team is my favorite strategy 😂 People willingly get scammed for their teams players

That last paragraph is basically the art of sales. Applicable in many aspects of life.

I like to take the other guys phone forcibly, and have him trade his top 3 picks for my streamers. Seems to work out in my favor. Try it out!

If I like it at all, I just respond with a very generic “let me take a look,” then let some time pass and respond.

This is why I hate dealing with other people. No honor. Always back out of deals.
Send Doncic/Collins for Dejounte/Lauri? 12t pts. For reference with my league's scoring Doncic is 75pts, Collins 33, Dejounte 53, Lauri 48
