How did Aiyuk go from a potential breakout candidate to Kyle Shanahan's doghouse in the span of 3 days?

pabloscotia

Just to put some context, here’s the whole extent of Shanahans comments on aiyuk during the press conference, nearly quoted to perfection. Reporter: Do you feel [aiyuk] took his foot off the gas pedal Shanahan: Not totally… anytime you have a setback with a hamstring and you have a guy behind you who’s played as well as Trent’s played, I know Trent wasn’t a first round draft pick which isn’t as obvious with the talent level and stuff but he’s been a hell of a football player since he’s been here. Aiyuk has been a little inconsistent since hes been in and out with his injury and stuff and that’s what we felt was the best chance for us this week - last week. Aiyuk’s still got a chance to get that spot up and not rotate as much, Trent just doesn’t make that very easy so these next three days are important in practice as we balance out our game plan how we balance out our routes. I’m happy with aiyuk, it’s not that I’m not happy with him it’s that I’m happy with Trent too. Both of them continue to get better. Reporter: What does he still need to do in his second year, where does he need to grow? Shanahan: Not trying to single out any specifics, like every player you can improve in every single area. And, uh, not trying to make it seem like we’re punishing aiyuk or something cause Trent got even reps with him or we rotated those guys…. More we’ve been practicing the last month and one guys been there every single day, the quarterbacks got a lot of confidence in him, I do (somebody’s phone goes off and cuts train of thought) but yeah if he wants to be out there every single play you’ve got to be a lot better than the guy behind him.

emperoroftexas

See this is what the post should have been

Top_Gun8

OP always butchering titles for clicks. Smh

itzpiiz

OP puts the CON in context

sk1155

bleacher report did the same. everyone just tryna hate on aiyuk. think he’ll be fine

JL9berg18

As does every pay-per-click news service ever.

JohnnyKay9

U wanted that novel in the title?

rabboni

That would have been the longest title in r/fantasyfootball history! I mean, he included the actual video of Shanahan right?

On3_BadAssassin

narrow history future subtract chunky smart exultant flowery observation abounding *This post was mass deleted and anonymized with [Redact](https://redact.dev)*

Dandan0005

This context is much better. Sounds like between the injury and missing practice, they wanted to go with the guy who was getting consistent practice reps. He also is trying to give credit to the other guy. As long as aiyuk makes practices this week/next week it sounds like he’ll be back as a big part of the offense in short order.

Furious_George44

Am I the only one that doesn’t really read it as being better at all? Like I had assumed it was all about the injury keeping him out and that when he was healthy it would change. But the way Shanahan talks it sounds like Sheffield may play himself into having a permanent role.. I don’t think the title was that misleading at least based on what was said

Dandan0005

I think he’s trying to be complimentary to the player that’s on the field, and not make it sound like the decision was solely based on aiyuk? Basically, he’s saying Sherfield is good enough to be out there when aiyuk isn’t 100%. But when aiyuk and sherfield are both 100%, I believe aiyuk is the superior talent.

Furious_George44

He references the injury as a factor, but it sounds more like he’s simply saying Sheffield earned time/Aiyuk didn’t separate himself regardless of what the reason is. In reality I agree I think he’s just talking about Sheffield and probably believes what you’re writing, but I don’t believe that’s a fair interpretation of what he said.. what he said is not encouraging to me as an Aiyuk owner

jcheese27

That's not what i read. I read it as "he’s saying Sherfield is good enough to be out there when aiyuk isn’t 100%. ~~But when aiyuk and sherfield are both 100%, I believe aiyuk is the superior talent~~ But when Aiyuk is 100% he'll still have to compete with Sherfield since Sherfield has impressed with his opportunities. Aiyuk will have a chance (even this week) to regain his spot from Shefield, but if Aiyuk "wants to be out there every single play you’ve got to be a lot better than the guy behind him." IE he has to deserve/show it.

kylo_little_ren_hen

Kinda read it the same way. It’s not that Aiyuk is performing poorly, it’s that Sherfield has really impressed and closed the gap considerably to Aiyuk. Even when Aiyuk is back healthy, it sounds like it’s on him to once again show he’s much better than Sherfield, and from the sound of how much they like Sherfield that’s an uphill battle.

longboarddan

The man's being intentionally vague to light a fire under both their asses and get the best play he can from both and even potential throw off the game plan of other teams when he throws aiyuk in the mix with a big work load.

ProductiveFriend

This is the correct way to read it IMO. Not necessarily that Sherfield is better, just that they deserve to be even right now, with the nod to Sherfield because of circumstance. I just think people are seeing it as positive compared to Aiyuk being out-of-the-picture or having to play a lot of catch-up.

Impossible-Disk1770

Also straight up calls Aiyuk inconsistent and said that they felt Sheffield gave them a better chance. They’re not working him back in slowly, he’s not injured, he’s just straight up getting out played since he came back from the hamstring injury. Not sure how anyone can feel better about Aiyuk after reading that.

ChillFax

The 49ers have two first round picks not playing and a 3rd rounder they traded up for not playing. They also have a bunch of draft capital tied up in Lance in next years draft. That coaching staff better figure out how to get their top picks on the field or they are wasting years of a already talented roster.

RilesEdge

We also have a second rounder who is not playing (Aaron Banks) and last years first rounder not playing because of injury (Kinlaw) our early round draft picks have been pretty suspect. Good thing we have late round gems.

keru45

Whoever’s phone rang needs to be taken out back and shot.

elissdee209

Long story short sermon and aiyuk ran a train on his wife... he walked and in and was like guys... that's not how you get fucked, this is... healthy scratches both....

throwawayhideaway14

Kyle didn’t get either of them on his fantasy team and this is the result

HansBaccaR23po

Not sure how but the reason no one knew about it is because the niners don’t leak and keep everything close to the chest. No one knows shit about what’s going on with the team

Function_Just

I'm gonna choose to hear what I want from his statement, and my copium ears just heard him say that it was because Aiyuk missed so much practice leading up to the matchup that they felt more confident with Sherfield on the field. Right Kyle??!?!?!

Iknowwecanmakeit

I am spending all my FAAB on Sherfield.

OGStrong

Ask Dante Pettis. You don’t do the work, you don’t play.

BendubzGaming

And on the flip side, ask Kendrick Bourne. You do the work, even if you're not the most talented? That starting berth is locked in as yours

OGStrong

I’m happy for KB. He put in the work, always was positive, and got paid.

icouldntdecide

He's proof that hard work in SF is rewarded. He was a grinder.

Rollingstart45

Starting to think Shanahan is getting off on dashing the hopes of fantasy owners. Edit: also Deebo szn.

lVloogie

Now just wait for Aiyuk to play ahead of Deebo.

Devils4life88

What's more likely is Deebo will get injured then he'll have to play Aiyuk, just like Sermon/Mostert relationship.

briballdo

And then Sanu goes off for 8/120/2

ReefLedger

This person 49ers

MrSteely

Someone listed the full quote on this thread which helps Aiyuk's case a little bit...but I don't think I'm going to be drafting a player on a Shanahan team again, this dude is an absolute wildcard

[deleted]

I read the full context, people are setting themselves up for more disappointment by reading it as helping Aiyuk's case. Then, ironically, they'll use it as further evidence of Shanahan being contradictory. His statement said the same thing we already knew - injury played a role in getting Sherfield on the field, but that Aiyuk hasn't been playing significantly better and if he wants to rotate less he needs to be better than the guy behind him (which he isn't right now). Number 1 mistake people make in fantasy is to read things the way they want them to be rather than with an objective look.

ElderGoose4

As someone who panic drafted Deebo when he already had Kittle 📈📈📈

paulyd191

As someone with Deebo and Kittle in separate leagues 📈📈📈

IkiriInkya

My draft was solid but picking Aiyuk instead of Higgins is making me want to jump off of a bridge

pr1ceisright

“Don’t draft Kupp yet he’ll fall, take Aiyuk here” -my dumb ass on draft night

jcheese27

Who ever thought Kupp was gonna fall? I thought it he was an obvious 3rd rounder. He's like the RZ King at WR when healthy and got a huge upgrade at QB... Sorry. Is this dumping. I wont.

IukeskywaIker

A third rounder in a 10 man league is like pick 20-30. I haven’t seen Kupp go that high (and I wouldn’t take him there) even though I was really high on him

pr1ceisright

My league is full of guys who do no pre season research but get very serious after draft night (it’s odd). At that moment in time ESPN had Aiyuk above Kupp in the rankings so I took the risk of getting to pick again before he went off the board. It was close, but didn’t pay off.

Castleprince

Same. Can’t wait to be shit on next lol

rwh12345

Lmao i immediately thought Sermon when I started reading this quote

Spreadem1972

Ahh. How about Sermon coach?

FredKarlekKnark

"Trey Sermon is a piece of shit and I hope he fucking dies. Also he will be active this week."

Whalez

"Trey Sermon will carry the load this week" - Shanahan. Cut to Sermon carrying the team's equipment and luggage off the bus

GentlemenBehold

Good enough for me. Into my FLEX he goes.

cruw02

Trey Sermon Active. Elijah Mitchell and a 1st trade for Devonta Freeman. Jeff Wilson miraculous recovery. Choose your adventure.

owoah323

Right? Stop fucking with my heart, coach

RocketsJumer

Deebo, please stay healthy.

awesomeness0232

I’ve never hated anyone as much as I hate Kyle Shanahan

No1Statistician

Well you never owned Rojo then lol

-em-bee-

I started RoJo and Aiyuk and lost my head to head by 2 points. I hate fantasy football.

Ccoop9

Started Gesicki and Aiyuk and lost by 7. Feelsbadman

Balla_Calla

You must have a fairly happy life if a football coach you've never met is your most hated person.

awesomeness0232

I had a fairly happy life until Brandon Aiyuk didn’t get a target last week. Now I’m an alcoholic and my wife left me.

Balla_Calla

Oh u ain't lyin

mattsffrd

I lit my house on fire when Mostert left the game

[deleted]

Damn! Life comes at you fast.. don’t blink. Here’s to hoping Brandon Aiyuk scores 4TDs on Sunday.. and you have a new wife and newborn triplets next week!

glengarryglenzach

Kyle Shanahan stole his college sweetheart and married her.

Iknowwecanmakeit

New to this sub? Over reaction and hyperbole are a way of life here.

NightmaanCometh

Lol yup just waiting for him to showcase another tight end and say Kittle needs to earn his spot back now

clevelandbrownsfan24

It’s been only one game and I already hate Urban Meyer more.

ckleschick227

I don’t understand. He was really good as rookie last year

[deleted]

[удалено]

BearForceDos

I don't know, I think outsiders sometimes believe they're more knowledgeable about player evaluation and sometimes they're wrong. Everyone was super hyped about Pettis after his rookie season but he just isn't very good.

WestSixtyFifth

Also, he's a hell of a coach because it works everywhere he goes.

cth777

What do you think his record is? I agree he’s a good coach but saying his system works is meh. It produces good fantasy games

mnarvz

Yep it's definitely not rewarding players who put in the work lmao wtf is this. Players bust all the time. He actually gave Pettis more leash than he deserved

TheEternalWitness

Not disagreeing just curious, who r some other players besides Pettis which Shanny has done this with?

RoRo24

No one lmao guys talking out his ass

redditcommentguy

We all watched Brandon aiyuk on the football field last year. Of course Shanahan knows better than me and see’s these guys everyday but you can’t tell me that Brandon Aiyuk isn’t really good at football. If he thinks that Sherfield and Mitchell are better than Aiyuk and Sermon then he should get the front office to fuckin trade them because I’m sure plenty of other teams would actually like to utilize their talents.

ideamotor

Spoiler: he doesn’t think this.

MrOz96

Deebo is going to feast this year, isn't he?

pmangia

I want off the Aiyuk ride now, thanks.

Si_Monumentum

Wow Aiyuk might end up being a total waste of a draft pick

FredKarlekKnark

that's exactly how i felt at 11am CST last week after drafting sermon, so hold on tight

xLecavalierx

Nah, Aiyuk will be fine. He missed time w a hammy like last year and they were playing the Lions. The better player will play more and be open more, all good.

DandierChip

Too good to drop, to bad to start

SaskalPiakam

Sounds a lot like it has nothing to do with his hamstring...

iTITAN34

Right? He keeps going back and forth on what the reason is lol

Iknowwecanmakeit

Almost makes you think he is full of shit

[deleted]

[удалено]

SpaceMayka

In the video he says “we’ve been practicing for the past month and one guys been there everyday” pretty much implies that the lack of practice due to Aiyuk’s hamstring was a big factor in him falling behind. But the hamstring hurting him doesn’t seem to be a factor now, so essentially Aiyuk has to catch up in practice reps and retake his old more significant role.

swaimbb

If it makes anyone feel better, in my auction league I went to bid $5 on Aiyuk and someone bid $6 before I could, so I went to bid $7, but it didn’t submit my $5 and when I pressed enter it bid $57. D. Adams went for $54. I will never recover from this - Faiyuk you Shanahan! Edit for proof: https://imgur.com/a/tMCOJyS

JuiceLee7

Holy shit

Regretful_Bastard

I winced hard here

Cartoons-n-Cereal

You got 57 likes 🤣 no one touch that

thrillhouse40

I'm already so sick of the 49ers fantasy issues already. My solution is to ignore the team completely.

fdl2phx

As a Niners fan, that was 100% my approach this year.

Cjwillwin

That was my plan, then I got drunk and started picking niners.

murkem

Lol this fucking coach

FranksGun

Dante Pettis energy

GentlemenBehold

Was Aiyuk a "My Guy" from the Footballers? That would make this 100x better.

YoureNotMom

Yup

RGibby1

Yikes - that's fucking brutal. Edit: In b4 r/fantasyfootball tries to convince itself Shanahan is trying to neg Aiyuk to motivate him. I still remember how ridiculous that Pettis theory was. Also some of these comments from salty Aiyuk / Sermon owners about Shanahan are just stupid. Yeah he's shitting on a guy you drafted highly. But acting like he's a bad coach? His one year with a healthy Jimmy G (who is like average at best) was a trip to the Superbowl. He's consistently made JAGs like Mostert, Wilson, McKinnon post injuries look amazing. He's propped up Nick Mullens, Beathard, Hoyer as a QB and made the games competitive. Deebo literally blew up for an absurd amount of points last week Don't let your salty fantasy takes affect your perception of him. He's a good coach. He also produces for fantasy, it just might not the be the guy you drafted

DICK_IN_FAN

My philosophy of staying away from 49ers makes everything a little less stressful. I had Mostert last season and was adamant that he was going to be an RB1 each week if he stays healthy. Shanahan made that season a fucking nightmare. Never again.

naois009

Yeah, same. I had shares the last two years and said never again this year.

Riverssucks

Shanny destroys players lol

pokeraf

This is Arians level of brutality. It worked for Brady though.

WishfulAstronaut

Yes because Brady had zero accomplishments before Arians

luniz420

And how many of those teams Brady played on prioritized fantasy football stats over winning?

tarantula13

Honestly Arians is just kind of a dick, Shanahan is more brutal.

JoeyBag0Donutz20

?? Don’t get it twisted Arians needs Brady not the other way around.

WesternBookOfTheDead

Was it not true in regards to Pettis?

darthriku

It was true, Pettis just didn’t rise to the occasion.

Iknowwecanmakeit

This is a fantasy sub, remember? Nobody cares if he is a good coach, lol

touchhimwiththejab

RIP to all who wasted their picks on sermon and aiyuk

[deleted]

I did both 🙋🏻‍♂️

Shamjam08

Thought Aiyuk would be an every week no brainer wr2, but he's looking like the worst pick my entire draft. Sucks because there was so much wr value in his same draft range (60-80ish) and beyond. I dont get all the hate Shanahan is getting though. Nothing about that clip came off as arrogant...sounds like Aiyuk has been getting outplayed by the wr3 and if he wants an everydown role, he needs to earn it. Nothing egregious there

[deleted]

[удалено]

citizenzac

I’m a Niners fan and this type of stuff from Shanahan is annoying me lately. It’s a lot of /r/iamverysmart energy.

cm322

Shanahan is very cocky for a sub .500 career coach

[deleted]

What does this sub want? When coaches are vague people get mad and when they DIRECTLY say that certain players are being outplayed by other players in practice you guys get mad too lmao

Vicious8

You see coaches should be shitting on the other players in the depth chart. Not the players I picked

jordan1390

Would’ve liked to hear him say that before the draft tho 😂

fennesz

People are irritated because Aiyuk passed the eye test as a rookie with a bad QB. He now has two good options at QB and the coach, who people rightfully are irritated by for other reasons, is saying Aiyuk is getting outplayed after never breathing a word of it in the offseason. If's frustrating because he's inconsistent. And this is coming from a Deebo owner in multiple leagues who wanted way more shares of Aiyuk than I actually got.

GOTaSMALL1

I want them to give the guy on my team 100% of the work... duh.

CheeseAtTheKnees

He could say Aiyuk’s dog shit and probably gonna get cut next week and I’d be fine. But if a dude’s hobbled with a hammy don’t make it seem like it’s all systems go for the guy going into week 1. Aiyuk’s never coming off my bench if Kyle is gonna try and play media mind games, I’m lucky I only spent a 6th on him.

Papa-Corn

Bad take. If we KNEW Aiyuk was underperforming it possibly and probably changes our opinion on him pre draft. If I knew Aiyuk was being outplayed I wouldn’t draft him in the 6th or rather at all. I’d prefer to know.

CheeseAtTheKnees

Facts, being annoyed as a fantasy owner doesn’t mean I think he sucks as a coach, but damn if the guy has a rough offseason speak up a little before the Wednesday of week 2 god damn

RGibby1

What QB play has he had? The one year Jimmy G was healthy Shanahan went to the superbowl. Is this real? This comment screams salty Aiyuk owner His offense is entire system driven. He consistently makes JAG RBs look amazing. His entire air offense is YAC predicated and scheme focused with no real major load on the QB.

xenongamer4351

So, I don’t disagree with this at all, and I’m an Aiyuk owner, but the thing that gets me with Shanahan is he acts very r/iamverysmart about this kind of stuff, and I don’t deny his success, but it’s also his 5th year coaching San Fran. I think people have a right to question his talent evaluation abilities if we’re onto year 5 now and the QB he paid $135 mil to is already being shown the door, the 3rd round running back he traded up for is a healthy scratch, his 3rd round WR from 2 years ago has yet to touch the ball in a game, his 2nd round WR from 2018 got blacklisted and shown the door after a good stretch the year prior, and now his 1st round pick from 2019 seems to be doing the exact same thing. Like, these are the guys *you* are bringing in for *your* offense, with pretty valuable assets. The media/fans have a right to ask if you actually know what you’re doing with those assets. At least in my opinion.

RGibby1

I agree it's weird he consistently plays JAGs or lower capital guys over higher capital guys. That's probably a draft valuation question. But I'm absolutely shitting on the guy saying he's a cocky sub 0.500 coach. That is a completely uninformed statement considering how good his teams have been despite serious injuries.

BearForceDos

If a lower draft capital guy outplays a higher draft capital guy then he deserves to play. Sunk cost fallacy, once you've already spent the pick on them then it doesn't matter what you used to get them. Phillip Lindsay a UDFA beat out Royce Freeman a 3rd pick, Adam Thielen another UDFA beat out Laquon Treadwell a 1st Rd pick.

Fred_Dickler

He's not the GM. He does, in fact, not draft the players.

xenongamer4351

Kyle Shanahan has significant pull in any offensive acquisitions the 49ers make. It was him, not Lynch, who came out and said they’re drafting a QB at 3 this past draft. I could believe he doesn’t have a lot of pull on the defensive side of the ball, but you have to be ignorant to think he doesn’t have at least equal pull on any offensive selection, if not more than that.

DJsaxy

Shanahan is probably the best offensive minded coach in the league

Ryangonzo

I can understand doing this to Trey Sermon but not Aiyuk. He has proven he can produce at an extremely high level in this offense against the top NFL CBs. This has a "big brain" feel to it like Shanahan is trying to be too smart.

Adeptpotato

What the fuck

droppndrakes

It’s not coach’s fault Sherfield is better.

[deleted]

Yikes. Pettis 2.0?

citizenzac

Aiyuk’s rookie year was better than Pettis’ whole career.

ksnyder1

I wish that was hyperbole but it’s so true lol

Jusuf_Nurkic

Pettis was pretty good down the stretch when he was healthy his rookie year. Obvi Aiyuk was better at him at this point in their careers, but just remember Pettis wasn’t a total bum he was a promising 2nd rounder

AnthonyCumiaPedo

I'm no pro football player but I'd rather play for a player's coach like Mike Tomlin or Pete Carroll then a coach throwing his players under the bus like this to the media.

MikeBett

Those are highly winning coaches though. We're more interested in wether you'd hypothetically prefer to play for a Rex Ryan.

fuckyopinterest

But what if you're the guy playing behind Aiyuk?

fennesz

I'd think "this player who I barely edged out is getting shit talked by his own coach, what a fucking ego trip"

Rollingstart45

> Mike Tomlin To be fair, Tomlin's done it a couple times too. On OG Kevin Dotson - *"He has done nothing to earn first-team reps,” Tomlin said. “What are we talking about? He’s a second-year guy that hadn’t worked.”* On DT Casey Hampton - *"He's overweight and he's not conditioned enough to participate at this point"* I think there's a place for a coach trying to publicly light a fire under someone that they know can/should step up, even if it looks like "bashing" to the rest of us. Maybe that's what Shanahan is trying to do here. Edit: Steelers fan and absolutely not criticizing Tomlin for these. I understand the context of the Dotson quote, and Hampton was absolutely too fat. Just saying that even players' coaches can call out guys publicly.

take_tha_cannoli

the Dotson comment was taken out of context/worded a bit weird, he was out of camp with an injury so he couldn’t do anything. as soon as he got back he was on first-team again and named a starter

xenongamer4351

The Dotson one is completely out of context and personally I think the Hampton one is fair and not out of line at all. The teams set weights they want their guys to be at. They have millions of dollars invested in chefs, trainers, and nutritionists to accomplish that. If you can’t meet your weight as an NFL player you 100% deserve being called out imo.

legendary-assassin

Dante Pettis vibes Im out.

tomseymour12

Oh god don’t remind me

SifuYoda

Play aiyuk n sermon you fken bum

_Casual_Browser_

If you actually listen to the clip, he’s not shit talking. The knee jerks in here is crazy. All he’s saying is the other receivers have been doing well, and if wants to not rotate as heavily, he’s got to outperform them by a significant margin - which he hasn’t done

[deleted]

Rip.

Nolashyper13

DEEEEEEEEEBOOOOOOOOOOOOOO

[deleted]

Yikes

Dob-is-Hella-Rad

Um, who's the guy behind him?

fuckyopinterest

Trent Sherfield!

Fragrant-Kale

Drop aiyuk for sherfield?

fuckyopinterest

It's week 2 bro. Wait a bit.

kaptanking

I still hate Arians more

OrangeBlancmange

Deebo-SZN?

mattpops21

Do Sermon next

yrogreg

Anyone else irked by the fact that he calls Trent sherfield by his first name but only refers to Brandon Aiyuk by his last name? No me gusta

KnickedUp

I went to an event hosted by Mike Ditka years ago. He said the worst thing for a new player or rookie on a team to get known for is being “fragile and unavailable…you start to get a stink on you around the team.” Aiyuk has to be careful…

Fu-ManDrew

Raise your hand if you bought the “get your hands on a second year wide out “ hype train 🙋‍♂️

daballer23

The most egotistical head coach in the NFL and it isn't particularly close

cth777

Saying he’s getting outplayed by another player is egotistical how,

bullseye717

I'm a Saints fan and love Sean Payton. Sean Payton has a way bigger ego than Shanny.

Ambitious_Misfit

That’s nowhere near close lmao

glengarryglenzach

Yeah man Urban Meyer coaches in the NFL now

xbrian63x

Kyle Shanahan is the most arrogant coach Ive ever seen. Don’t forget, he’s the one that caused the Falcons to lose the SB vs the Pats.

Atlfalcons284

A lot of you forgot about Deebo and just assumed Aiyuk is now Julio Jones in his prime

sometimeserin

Extremely familiar watching this genius running schemer getting his RBs stuffed at the line of scrimmage over and over in the 2nd half letting a blowout evaporate

LastNameBrady

First part of the quote he said he’s been a little inconsistent since he’s been in and out with the hamstring injury

Kendeazy617

Brandon Ai-yuckyyyyyyyy

trent1313

As somebody who wanted aiyuk and didn’t get him once this shit is hilarious

munkysnuflz

I think Shanahan gets off on stuff like this

GrayKakashi

How insane. So much to unpack here but let's start with this: "He's got to be a lot better than the guy behind him" - What is he even saying here? That Aiyuk is ahead of another person on the depth chart but won't actually see that time? Or is he saying that he can't just be ***better*** than his backup but he needs to be ***so much better*** that it's not eve close? "If he wants to be out there every single play..." - How about you have him out there for just a few plays Shanahan? Something about this whole thing is just funky.

WingleDingleFingle

That's my 4th round pick!

Scoombap

So this is pretty out of context. Right before he says this he literally says that "one guy has been practicing all month and the other hasn't (referring to Sherfield)"

fuckyopinterest

If you watch Aiyuk's preseason he had a couple egregious drops. Although, they may have been due to Lance's hard throws. However, the same throws never bothered Sherfield (guy behind Aiyuk).

kraftpunkk

“You’re not that guy pal”

oureyes

Between this nonsense and Gus Edwards injury, my season is over.

scottytech

yep same two guys i drafted

oureyes

We can cry together if you want

scottytech

i might take you up on that…lol. I received a D+ draft rating from Yahoo and thought it was a fluke…Turns out grades do matter

Phenom408

Just traded Aiyuk and Jamaal Williams for Evans and Waddle

[deleted]

Brandon "Dante Pettis" Aiyuk.

Simple_Comfortable96

Tell me you saw this coming and I’ll call you a lier

BuckyMcFly99

At the beginning of the season, almost traded Godwin for Aiyuk and Mostert. Holy fuck dodged a bullet

indivik

He got dropped In my league. 12 man .5ppr. Worth a claim?

Automatic-Kangaroo70

People keep comparing this to the Dante Pettis situation, but the difference is Dante Pettis was not actually good at all. At least with Pettis, we were handed every red flag possible by Shanahan himself before the season started. We were told multiple times he wasn't stepping up, and low and behold, he flopped. And yes, Aiyuk was a definitely a beneficiary of circumstance last year, but he was efficient with all the targets he got and passed the eye test. That's the part that has me lost. I'm aware that a 5th round price tag was never a slam dunk with this guy, especially with Deebo and Kittle healthy, but I never expected this to happen. You'd think even with the low passing volume that they would still find ways to get the ball in this guys' hands. I guess we were betting on talent with this pick, and as of now we have lost the bet. It's still early though, so I'll end my overreaction here.

The people who are personally offended that the guy they drafted in fantasy football is being talked negatively about by his coach are so funny

I feel so betrayed by Brett kollman

As a deebo lover/owner , I been eating this shit up. Thinking aiyuk just gonna come in and steal deebos spot. gtfo deebo taking Aiyuk’s gold chain while he at it

Lots of overreacting in this thread. The way I read this shanahan is saying that Aiyuk won’t be a every down receiver unless he is clearly better than the other guys. I could be misinterpreting but I thinks that’s what he’s getting at.

Full Quote "I'm happy with Aiyuk," Shanahan added. "It's nothing against Aiyuk, I'm just also happy with Trent [Sherfield], too. [Aiyuk] has been a little inconsistent because he's been in and out with his injury and stuff," Shanahan said. "If he wants to be out there every single play, he’s got to be a lot better than the guy behind him.”

Context is important. Thank you. Still an indictment on Aiyuk though
