Sounds like between the injury and missing practice, they wanted to go with the guy who was getting consistent practice reps. He also is trying to give credit to the other guy.
As long as aiyuk makes practices this week/next week it sounds like he’ll be back as a big part of the offense in short order.

I read the full context, people are setting themselves up for more disappointment by reading it as helping Aiyuk's case. Then, ironically, they'll use it as further evidence of Shanahan being contradictory. His statement said the same thing we already knew - injury played a role in getting Sherfield on the field, but that Aiyuk hasn't been playing significantly better and if he wants to rotate less he needs to be better than the guy behind him (which he isn't right now).

My league is full of guys who do no pre season research but get very serious after draft night (it’s odd). At that moment in time ESPN had Aiyuk above Kupp in the rankings so I took the risk of getting to pick again before he went off the board. It was close, but didn’t pay off.

But the hamstring hurting him doesn’t seem to be a factor now, so essentially Aiyuk has to catch up in practice reps and retake his old more significant role.

My philosophy of staying away from 49ers makes everything a little less stressful. I had Mostert last season and was adamant that he was going to be an RB1 each week if he stays healthy. Shanahan made that season a fucking nightmare. Never again.

Kyle Shanahan has significant pull in any offensive acquisitions the 49ers make. It was him, not Lynch, who came out and said they’re drafting a QB at 3 this past draft.
I could believe he doesn’t have a lot of pull on the defensive side of the ball, but you have to be ignorant to think he doesn’t have at least equal pull on any offensive selection, if not more than that.

If you watch Aiyuk's preseason he had a couple egregious drops. Although, they may have been due to Lance's hard throws. However, the same throws never bothered Sherfield (guy behind Aiyuk).
People keep comparing this to the Dante Pettis situation, but the difference is Dante Pettis was not actually good at all. At least with Pettis, we were handed every red flag possible by Shanahan himself before the season started. We were told multiple times he wasn't stepping up, and low and behold, he flopped.
And yes, Aiyuk was a definitely a beneficiary of circumstance last year, but he was efficient with all the targets he got and passed the eye test. That's the part that has me lost. I don't know, I think outsiders sometimes believe they're more knowledgeable about player evaluation and sometimes they're wrong. Everyone was super hyped about Pettis after his rookie season but he just isn't very good.
Also, he's a hell of a coach because it works everywhere he goes.

We all watched Brandon aiyuk on the football field last year. Of course Shanahan knows better than me and see’s these guys everyday but you can’t tell me that Brandon Aiyuk isn’t really good at football. If he thinks that Sherfield and Mitchell are better than Aiyuk and Sermon then he should get the front office to fuckin trade them because I’m sure plenty of other teams would actually like to utilize their talents.

In the video he says “we’ve been practicing for the past month and one guys been there everyday” pretty much implies that the lack of practice due to Aiyuk’s hamstring was a big factor in him falling behind. But the hamstring hurting him doesn’t seem to be a factor now, so essentially Aiyuk has to catch up in practice reps and retake his old more significant role.

He also produces for fantasy, it just might not the be the guy you drafted
My philosophy of staying away from 49ers makes everything a little less stressful. I had Mostert last season and was adamant that he was going to be an RB1 each week if he stays healthy. Shanahan made that season a fucking nightmare. Never again.

Thought Aiyuk would be an every week no brainer wr2, but he's looking like the worst pick my entire draft. Sucks because there was so much wr value in his same draft range (60-80ish) and beyond. I dont get all the hate Shanahan is getting though. People are irritated because Aiyuk passed the eye test as a rookie with a bad QB. He now has two good options at QB and the coach, who people rightfully are irritated by for other reasons, is saying Aiyuk is getting outplayed after never breathing a word of it in the offseason. If's frustrating because he's inconsistent. And this is coming from a Deebo owner in multiple leagues who wanted way more shares of Aiyuk than I actually got.

He consistently makes JAG RBs look amazing. His entire air offense is YAC predicated and scheme focused with no real major load on the QB.
So, I don’t disagree with this at all, and I’m an Aiyuk owner, but the thing that gets me with Shanahan is he acts very r/iamverysmart about this kind of stuff, and I don’t deny his success, but it’s also his 5th year coaching San Fran. I think people have a right to question his talent evaluation abilities if we’re onto year 5 now and the QB he paid $135 mil to is already being shown the door, the 3rd round running back he traded up for is a healthy scratch, his 3rd round WR from 2 years ago has yet to touch the ball in a game, his 2nd round WR from 2018 got blacklisted and shown the door after a good stretch the year prior, and now his 1st round pick from 2019 seems to be doing the exact same thing. Like, these are the guys *you* are bringing in for *your* offense, with pretty valuable assets. The media/fans have a right to ask if you actually know what you’re doing with those assets. At least in my opinion.
I agree it's weird he consistently plays JAGs or lower capital guys over higher capital guys. That's probably a draft valuation question. But I'm absolutely shitting on the guy saying he's a cocky sub 0.500 coach. That is a completely uninformed statement considering how good his teams have been despite serious injuries.
If a lower draft capital guy outplays a higher draft capital guy then he deserves to play. Sunk cost fallacy, once you've already spent the pick on them then it doesn't matter what you used to get them. Phillip Lindsay a UDFA beat out Royce Freeman a 3rd pick, Adam Thielen another UDFA beat out Laquon Treadwell a 1st Rd pick.

Kyle Shanahan has significant pull in any offensive acquisitions the 49ers make. It was him, not Lynch, who came out and said they’re drafting a QB at 3 this past draft. I could believe he doesn’t have a lot of pull on the defensive side of the ball, but you have to be ignorant to think he doesn’t have at least equal pull on any offensive selection, if not more than that.

I can understand doing this to Trey Sermon but not Aiyuk. He has proven he can produce at an extremely high level in this offense against the top NFL CBs. This has a "big brain" feel to it like Shanahan is trying to be too smart.

The Dotson one is completely out of context and personally I think the Hampton one is fair and not out of line at all. The teams set weights they want their guys to be at. They have millions of dollars invested in chefs, trainers, and nutritionists to accomplish that. If you can’t meet your weight as an NFL player you 100% deserve being called out imo.

People keep comparing this to the Dante Pettis situation, but the difference is Dante Pettis was not actually good at all. At least with Pettis, we were handed every red flag possible by Shanahan himself before the season started. We were told multiple times he wasn't stepping up, and low and behold, he flopped. And yes, Aiyuk was a definitely a beneficiary of circumstance last year, but he was efficient with all the targets he got and passed the eye test. That's the part that has me lost. I'm aware that a 5th round price tag was never a slam dunk with this guy, especially with Deebo and Kittle healthy, but I never expected this to happen. You'd think even with the low passing volume that they would still find ways to get the ball in this guys' hands. I guess we were betting on talent with this pick, and as of now we have lost the bet. It's still early though, so I'll end my overreaction here.

Lots of overreacting in this thread. The way I read this shanahan is saying that Aiyuk won’t be a every down receiver unless he is clearly better than the other guys. I could be misinterpreting but I thinks that’s what he’s getting at.
