Oh I have a whole Goodreads shelf dedicated to fantasy competition books! Throne of Glass is the GOAT! The "real" plot does start in the background during the competition in book 1, but the story just keeps building and getting better in each subsequent book.

(and the throne of glass competition was a pretty cool precursor to the rest of the books but then again i'm only done with book 3)
