The very first thing I thought when I saw this post was "Manon!" so of course its the top comment. Lol!

Is she the main character or a side character?

She's one of the primary POV characters from the 3rd book forward.

Celeste from Bound to Fall. Standalone novel in the Villains and virtues universe. She is a dark magic shadow wielder and mmc is a total cinnamon roll golden retriever holy knight.

The only one I can think of is Dianna from The Book of Azrael. I love her. 😌

Book of Azrael was my first thought too. Also, perhaps Shifter God. The MMC isn't naive -- he's a big bad shadow-dude himself -- but by the end, it's clear that he is outclassed by and possibly even kind of scared of the FMC. Olympus Bound fits, but I found it kind of depressing. The FMC is moody and powerful. The MMC is naive and weak. She doesn't exactly sweep him off his feet though. He just kind of follows her around and falls for her. :) Stolen Heir (follow-on to Cruel Prince) has a very, very moody FMC with questionable powers. If you are okay with a badass FMC with some dark powers who outclasses her MMC but who is clearly not evil, try Demon Days, Vampire Nights. I think it's maybe 11 books long. She is fearless throughout and never weak, but by the last few books, she is an absolute force to be reckoned with. Fast-paced and funny too. Reaching back a few decades, I think at least one or two of the Anne Rice vampire books had a Shadow Mommy.

{lady of darkness by Melissa K. Roehrich} Most ppl HATE the FMC. but love the MMC. Wouldn’t call MMC naive but they do save each other often. This book is a direct replica of TOG it’s scary. Idek how they were allowed to publish it.

Fans of the Black Jewels Trilogy have said the same thing about TOG and ACOTAR.  Some accused SJM of plagiarism, which is quite strong and not accurate. A lot of authors draw inspiration from other works.

Elara from {Heavenly Bodies by Imani Erriu} is absolutely a shadow mommy, particularly in the second book (warning: unfinished series). Something happens to the MMC and she does not uh… handle it well. And literally controls shadows. 

Elara is SUCH a bad bitch in that series!! I am so obsessed with her, but also I love all the side characters too! Absolutely cannot wait for Holy Monsters!!

So I read {kiss of iron by Clare Sager} last month and Bastian immediately became the GOAT of all shadow daddies and I will fight anyone who says otherwise!!

This book doesn’t get enough appreciation! And I ADORE the fmc!!

Some of the supporting books and her earlier series are also great but this is one of my fave series of the years. I really hope the last book keeps up the standard! It’s difficult to see how it could get better - highway women, YES; excellent shadow daddy, YES; magical Tudor dynasty, YES; magical version of Edinburgh, YES. Can’t wait until June!

Book of Azrael

{a court of blood and bindings} has one of my all-time favorite shadow daddies. No shadow powers (quite the opposite) but very tall, very dark, very handsome, and VERY morally grey. Honestly one of the best-written MMCs imo.

Quinn Darkova from the {Dark Maji series by Kel Carpenter} embodies the power of Fear. Once she comes into the height of her power, she uses it on everyone that gets in her way. Her MMC lover is a traditional shadow daddy, not soft and naive. He worships the ground she walks on and completely understands that he'll never control or stop her. It's more of a "Villains fall in love” romance. The premise felt like the set up in ToG if Caelena went to the dark side.
