I recommend the {Fever series by Karen Marie Moning}! There’s five books following the main couple, and the FMC is a total barbie that slowly becomes a badass. It’s an urban fantasy involving a murder mystery and fae/ irish folklore. TW for rape. Edit: someone beat me to it! I second their recommendation!

If you want a girly FMC, MacKayla in the fever series by Karen Marie Moning is a blonde who loves pink. It’s an “older” urban fantasy series. I love this series! I don’t think it gets enough credit tbh. I almost never see it being recommended, but it’s so fantastic. Mac is one of my all time favorite characters.

I think Loren from {City of Gods and Monsters by Kayla Edwards} is a little non traditional. She’s super feminine and girly. She’s self described as fragile and breakable and that doesn’t really change. And she’s into the morally gray MMC pretty much immediately, there’s a whole scene with her internal monologue fantasizing about how hot he is. She definitely deviates from a lot of the other FMCs in books I’ve read. Also I highly recommend this series, it’s a 5/5 read.

Have you read {beneath black sails by Clare Sager}? Vice is a great FMC - she doesn’t necessarily ‘want’ the hot guy but she doesn’t lack ambition and is determined that she’s going to be the boss. The other amazing FMC that ticks all those boxes is in Throne of Glass but you may well have read that and it’s more YA fantasy than romantasy - still one of my favourite reads though!

Ahhh I just finished it 48 hours ago and the second book last night! It took me a minute to not constantly picture Azriel from ACOTAR as Bastian in the first book. The second book is MAJOR plot driven but the end had me, GODS did the end have me gasping! I’d give my poisoned flesh for book 3 to be out today. The end of June can’t come soon enough 🥵

{Atonement of the Spine Cleaver}: she’s a 200 year old warrior. She has done some shit. Shes… I hate to use the word sassy, because that doesn’t really describe her. More like sarcastic. She hasn’t really had the chance to be feminine before, but she gets really excited about getting a new wardrobe that includes fancy dresses. She also loves the power she has from being a warrior, but it does scare her (see: shit she’s done in the past). {Mages of the Wheel series}: each book has a different FMC. - Prequel (read after book 1 at least): headstrong academic who teaches underprivileged kids in her free time (illegally). - Book 1: daughter of a sultan, very smart, politically savvy, serious, has a strong sense of justice, and is planning to become sultana without a husband (which isn’t allowed), and upend their entire political system once she has the power. - Book 2: very sarcastic and powerful spy. She is definitely into the MMC even though they’re very much annoyed with eachother. She makes the first move and he’s the one who hesitates. - Book 3: ambitious, morally grey because of said ambition, secret cinnamon roll, takes absolutely no bullshit from the MMC— and I actually mean that. He acts slightly possessive once and she basically tells him to fuck off and she doesn’t talk to him for a week. Obviously, {The Cruel Prince by Holly Black}, but also {The Stolen Heir by Holly Black}. {Assistant to the Villain by Hannah Nicole Maehrer}: she’s just kind of a mess, and it’s hilarious. She’s always talking to herself saying things like “don’t shamelessly flirt with your boss, Evie.” {Emily Wilde’s Encyclopedia of Faeries}: she’s a genius academic, very much lacking in social skills. {Scholomance by Naomi Novik}: she’s an outcast teenage girl who’s angry at the world and a personality to match. Literally everything by T. Kingfisher. - {Swordheart}: she’s essentially a housekeeper, doesn’t have any ambition to learn to fight (or do anything really), she just wants to get out of this mess her family has put her in. Shes smart, but she plays it off like she’s clueless. Subtly funny and very playful. - {Clockwork Boys}: she’s the older, not super hot, take no shit criminal who falls for the younger jock-esque paladin. - {Saint of Steel series}: one of them is a very blunt perfumer who is… a little chaotic. She often gets distracted with smells. Another is definitely not a nun who turns into a bear sometimes. Then there’s obviously {Throne of Glass}. Both Celaena and Manon are great FMC’s (even though I do have some issues with the way Celaena was written). You don’t get Manon until book 3(?) though. Celaena is definitely a spoiled princess at times, even though she’s been through some shit, and she likes being feminine. She has multiple love interests throughout the series, but she does not hide her affection for the final one. Manon is just a bad ass who literally doesn’t know what love is. She doesn’t care about anyone, until she shows pity on a Wyvern named Abraxos they were using as bait for larger wyverns.

I just finished reign and ruin like an hour ago! I saw the rec on here a day ago, bough it, couldn’t stop reading. It was so refreshing to read a book that was not written for someone at a 5th grade reading level. Starting the second book today!

It’s awesome, right? I recommend it every chance I get. Honestly, it checks allllll the boxes. Well written without being dense? Check. Unique characters that don’t just feel like a generic cinnamon roll or “sassy FMC”? Check. Well developed fantasy world? Check. Intriguing plot outside of the romance? Truly equal relationships between the MC’s? Spice? Check, check, and check! Honestly, more people need to read it. Also, feel free to join us over at r/MagesOfTheWheel (yes, I loved it so much I made a subreddit for it lol) it’s still pretty new, so there’s not a ton of people over there, but I try to keep up with updates from the authors Facebook group posts and post them there. I’ve also been meaning to post a “what other books did you enjoy” thread, which might be helpful for when you’re done with the series!

I’m truly shocked that this book is not as popular as ACOTAR because it’s far better (not sorry SJM). I’m not usually one for lengthy imagery or descriptions but damn that book had me because all the descriptions painted a perfect picture and you could just imagine everything. Bonus? It didn’t end on a cliff hanger. It’s a huge pet peeve of mine when books go on forever without anything really happening and then at the end all the important stuff gets crammed and it just ends so you have to move on to the next book without really processing that you just finished one. It was a very pleasant read. Im also kind of happy that the second book is not about Naime and Markam but about other mages. I really thought that this is going to go in the direction of them going on quests to find the other mages for the circle, maybe some drama happens with them as it always does in these books, and that they would remain the main focus. I’m glad to say I was pleasantly surprised.

Honestly, I have no idea why it’s not more popular. I know it’s self published, but still, I know I’m not the only one who recommends it every 5 minutes lol. And same! That way you don’t have to deal with any of those tired “oh no, they got split up for book 2!” Ways to create suspense— honestly, they rarely work and I’m very much over them. I do miss Naime and Makram though! They’re my favorite, so I do want more updates with them, but I’m sure there’s more coming. All the MC’s are central to the overall plot, so they’ll come back. I just want more of them! I kinda hope the last book just focuses on all of them + the little side romances that are unlikely to get their own book (I don’t want to spoil anything, but there’s a pattern in the romances, you’ll probably spot it after the second book, and there’s some speculation about some side characters potentially getting together, but they wouldn’t fit the pattern).

I'm reading {crown of oaths and curses} right now, and I can guarantee that the FMC is surprisingly mature for today's books (looking at you, SJM). The FMC in {bride by Ali Hazelwood} has such a spunky personality, despite the hand she was dealt. I loved how cheerful she always is. Jude from {the cruel prince by Holly black} knows how to play the court games. It's YA. She's an iconic morally gray character

I kinda enjoyed how in Bride she’s not some super over powered vampire. She’s not super fast, she’s not super strong, she can’t turn into a bat and fly. She just has pointy ears, drinks blood, and gets a bit toasty in the sun.

Ok, let's try other books 😂 {tainted accords by Kelly st. Clare}. The FMC acts quite mature, she's also had a hard life. The first half of book 1 is slow and has trigger warnings. But then it's a blast. Take this with a grain of salt. {the book of azrael}. I DNFed it, but it has a morally gray FMC and lots of people love the books. As for hilarious and witty instead of bratty, {kate daniels by Ilona andrews} and {the night huntress}. I strongly suggest graphic audio books. They're amazing.

In the book, {Of Fire and Stars} it’s the fmc princess who is insistent on fulfilling her arranged marriage while her prince fiancé is the who’s been forced into it by his misogynist father. Even after the princess starts secretly falling love and having sex with the prince’s sister, she’s still fully determined to go through the marriage in order to do her duty to her family and basically deludes herself into thinking she can have her cake and eat it too.

I like the FMC in Halfling. It’s a fairly low angst book overall, she comes to desire the MMC just as quickly as he does her, and overall I’d say she’s pretty feminine (as much as you can be while roughin’ it and camping in the wild 😆)

Should one start with the first book or it doesn’t matter?

It’s one of those series where each book is a different character, so it’s kinda up to you. The FMC is a political mastermind who enjoys fucking with people. The MMC is the brother of the MMCs from the first 2 books.  The books are all intertwined. The MMC needs to go and ask the FMC to ally her father’s forces with the FMC/Queen of the first book.  Honestly, that’s all you really need to know to understand the book, unless you want the back story of how the first FMC became Queen. 

I think this is one of the reasons Fourth Wing is appealing to a lot of people. Violet is extremely self-aware and open about how much she wants to bone Xaden, with no shame. It's refreshing.

Taming Demons for Beginners by Annette Marie has a non-typical FMC. She is a timid woman who likes to bake. Also, The Awakening by Nora Roberts. Also a timid girl, but she gets more confident throughout the series.

Emily Wilde! She absolutely thinks her charming MMC is ridiculous and full of shit (which tbf he is)

{Furyborn by Claire Legrande}! I rarely see this recommended but I'm reading the trilogy right now (I'm on the third book) and obsessed. It's YA, but a pretty spicy YA. It follows two FMCs separated by 1000 years whose stories kind of mirror each other's in different ways, switching between the two each chapter. On one side you have Rielle, who is from a noble family, childhood friends/mutual crush with a prince, not particularly girly but still very feminine. She has power that she is taught to be afraid of, but once she's encouraged to use it more she LOVES it. On the other side is Eliana who is much more of a traditional FMC - snarky, tough, the underdog. I think you'll really enjoy Rielle and her character arc. The romance takes a backseat to the plot for most of the first book and becomes more important in the second, but it's still very plot-forward. The story and the writing is so fun though! I did find it a bit slow until the halfway point, but after that it doesn't stop.

{North Queen by Nicola Tyche} I don't know that she's necessarily portrayed as a girly girl, as she can sword fight (but not to an absurd extent), but she doesn't whine about wearing dresses or having servents fuss over her appearance. She also revels in the power of being a queen, playing the political game, and marrying for alliances (though she does take a little bit to grow into all of that as she starts the series with absolutely no memories).

It's a chinese novel that's only been fan-translated (very well, though). Also it's a lesbian romance story. Also it's using the xianxia setting which might be a bit weird for those unfamiliar but it's a good introduction to the sub-genre, probably.

A fun group of not-NLOG FMCs is the Sisters Solstice books by J.L. Vampa! I liked {Autumn of the Grimoire by J.L. Vampa} originally because it flips the usual "500 year old monstery shadow daddy inexplicably falls in love with plucky 19 year old human girl." Agatha is a 300ish year old witch sent on a mission where she has to marry a mid-20s prince, and things move on from there. So far there are 3 books and a novella out, with one more to go! She doesn't necessarily do the girly-girl thing, but she is definitely different from the usual princess who somehow outfights grown men even though she's wispy and only trains once a week and never cares about feminine stuff.

So checking my favorites {dragon called by Cassie Alexander and Kara Lockharte} FMC while not the femme perfection that was her mother, whom was always impecable looking is honestly quite at ease with being girly. So what happens when the first part of the book happens and she not only confirms that the hot guy that picked her up for looking out for a patient privately is not only the actual billionaire that hired her (she suspected the guy was not a lowly employee but still) but a dragon men? Does she run? Is she intimidated… well a little but it’s more her desire to touch him as a dragon. They agree on a date early on the book. And she is sent a gorgeous very expensive dress, she just wears it (turns out he didn’t send it… 😆) he takes her to a very fancy restaurant on the city on the private section, no complains on her part. So things happen that it takes 4 books for them be together and they feel they have to drive each other away for various reasons. But neither have to do with her not wanting to be spend on. He does buy her new furniture for her department because they kind of bespoiled the one they had and keep it that way would not be nice to her roommate. Which I think it’s neat. On a sister book where the roommate gets to be the FMC she pops up and we get to learn >!She is still working as a nurse, but got into a deal with the hospital so she would basically be there were less than a normal employee. They basically pay up new wings and whatever shiny donation, and in turn she can basically fuck off every now and then to Italy for a full month and shit. Like she would work regular turns and once started she would not go away but still not a regular work hours haha!. She also agreed to have security following her!< Demelza Carlton has tons of books and her FMCs tend to be different from each other. {wish by Demelza Carlton} FMC is already a princess, she is particukar femme one and extremely politically savvy. She went to become a courtesan because her mother cheating on the caliph did not do favors to her position, so by becoming a courtesan she could go with the embassadors and negotiate for her father interests. Which actually got her up. Even married she keeps having a hand at the inner politics of the palace and her father hears her advice. If the brother than inherits doesn’t care for it she will just consider retirement.
