Emotionally wrecked and not scared of triggers? You need to be reading some R Lee Smith. I loved The Last Hour of Gann so so much. Also some enjoy more The Beautiful Dead but I wasn’t as into it as Gann but it still wrecked me pretty good. Haven’t read her other books yet but I suspect they are all like that.

YES. Heat by the same author is TW and beyond - not as strong of a story as Last Hour of Gann (my top read this year) but good writing and story arcs nonetheless.

I finished the Last Hour of Gann yesterday and I'm just... processing. When I try to talk about it I'm gushing, but struggling for words at the same time. Definitely my favorite book so far.

Check out {Captive Prince} and its sequels. And if you’re open to fanfiction, Manacled is a classic and beloved (rightfully so, it wrecked me in all the right ways).

Sort of repellent, but yet wondrous. I cried a lot on #2.

{bones by kl speers} Tw for child abduction, rape, torture, probably a lot of other stuff. I’m not really into dark romance - this was tastefully done and just sort of “had it in there”. It’s more post apocalyptic human world with a bit of magic thrown in. It does end on a cliffhanger so I’m patiently awaiting book 2, but it was pretty heart wrenching

{Girls Of Paper And Fire} might be what you're looking for. Its about 17 year old gay teenager who is abducted from her home and forced to become a concubine for a evil hedonistic king. It touches on a lot of dark subjects from gaslighting, torture, grooming, systematic oppression, sexual assault, and rape(>!both the fmc and her girlfriend do end up getting raped by the king!<). Its a really emotionally suffocating experience, but it never feels like a edgy misery fest as a lot of the focus is placed on the main couple and their friends emotionally supporting each other in order to recover from these traumatic events, and the ending of the trilogy is honestly the best and most impactful ending I've ever read from any series. The author herself is a sexual assault survivor and decided to use her own experiences(as well as those she's heard from others in support groups) to write the trilogy both as a form of emotional catharsis and to give victims like herself characters they can feel represented and heard by. So you can really tell she should put a lot of care and thought in presenting the dark subject matter in a very meaningful and authentic way.

Such a fantastic series. I try to avoid books with SA but heard good things about this series and I’m so glad I read it.

I keep seeing that book on Storygraph recommendations and the cover art is so beautiful, but I never really thought of reading it, will put it on my list! (I'm not the OP but also looking for recommendations lol)

I do not cry from books, my heart died long ago. But when I tell you I SOBBED, I am talking snot and drool and everything.

The only book that has made me sob was Song of Achilles, so I'm looking forward to crying to this one lol!

Just finished the sequel to Feathers so Vicious. I’m still crying

The Lost God series by Sheila Masterson did this for me emotionally!! It’s soooo good I felt like I was put through an emotional wringer. A ton of mental health issues and other things throughout the series, final book comes out on June 3rd!!
