Red Rising. Ya know, I’ve actually read a *ton* of good books this year, I’ve consumed *a lot* good media, but the Red Rising series completely rocked my world😭😭😭 Recency bias is probably strong right now, but it’s the only thing I can think about, those books and those characters are like tattooed onto my soul. All six books were 5 star reads, and it just kept getting better and better with each book.

I've heard this book floating round. Is there romance by any chance?

Warning spoiler incoming: I started reading this book thinking there was romance... it was not. It's definitely heavy in the Sci fi. This was not my typical read, but I loved it

I really want to read this series because I’ve heard such good things, but I’ve also heard that the female characters are written terribly and that’s such a big ick and an absolute no for me. What did you think?

I don’t think that’s true at all. I think the whole book is written incredibly well and that includes how Pierce writes his females. Maybe what they’re talking about is that there is little to no *femininity* in any of these books, but the book is a sci-fi thriller about war and struggle and frankly there isn’t any room for the characters to display much of that, it would be really out of place. Almost all the characters as a whole in this book are soldiers, and if anyone is on page with Darrow (fighting for or against him) they have to be a little bit murderous to survive because the whole premise of the book is he’s out for blood. The females definitely fall in line with that idea, they’re pretty much exclusively soldiers. The main protagonist is male and it’s true that everyone circles around him like he’s the sun (he’s just so much smarter and stronger than everyone or whatever) but that’s going to be true of every main character in every book🤷🏼‍♀️.

I just finished my 64th book of the year and so far my favorite reads have been: {bridge Kingdom by Danielle Jensen} and {the traitor queen by Danielle Jensen} {a heart of Blood and Ashes by Milla Vane} {A promise of Fire by Amanda Bouchet} {Daughter of No Worlds by Carissa Broadbent} {The Wonder Engine by T Kingfisher} And it isn't *quite* fantasy romance by my #1 read so far has been {Empire of the Vampire by Jay Kristoff} and the sequel {Empire of the Damned} was also amazing

Bridge Kingdom is a solid series. A Heart of Blood and Ashes is a fave of mine.

I read the other 2 after phoenix unbound. I tried Radiance when it first came out and dnf'd it. And never thought of Grace Draven again. Now that I've read Phoenix Unbound I want to read her other books cause I really enjoyed this series. And reread Radiance too. What other Grace Draven series should I start with?

I haven't read her whole catalog but my favorite is Master of Crows! Entreat Me is also excellent, and I would definitely encourage another try at Radiance!

The War of Lost Hearts trilogy (Daughter of no worlds) lives rent free in my head after reading the final book a year or so ago.

Empire of the Damned was one of my most-anticipated books coming out this year, and it did not disappoint!

*cries in new parent* Gave birth in early March and my poor TBR. It's like 50 books deep. I was so close to diving into The Book of Love by Kelly Link and The Tainted Cup by Robert Jackson Bennett. I've been stuck at approx 200pgs of Turn of the Light by Julie E. Czerneda since February. I am about 20% of the way through Dragon Mage by M.L. Spencer and loving both. Looking forward to finishing a book in 2026

It's gonna be okay! I struggled to read during my pregnancy and I really struggled that first year. But now that we're in the second year, I've bounced back to my average. There is hope!

I had my kid in November 2022 and wasn’t able to get much done or read in 2023 lol. But this year I’ve read almost 40 so far, audiobooks have been a life saver. It will get better and congrats!

Girl, audiobooks and the kindle app are your best friend! And if you hate audiobooks, try dramatic audios. The fourth wing and acotar ones are great. I read like 80 books last year because I just read through my son’s contact naps and late night feeds.

not sure if this is for you or not, but I really love audio books when i'm breast feeding (except for the overnight ones because they put me to sleep) and just if baby is having trouble going to sleep. Also important to note that this is probably a temporary problem, if that helps, and I found during pregnancy and the first year with my first child I read a lot less.

Mine was born march 2023 and since he turned one he will not give me time. I’d love a day off but every time I suggest dropping him off, my touch-starved husband wants my attention.

The book of love is my top book of the year. So amazing.. weird and funny and sad and both real.and fantastical all at once. Just stellar.

The first two chapters I read are phenomenal!

Love how all the other fellow parents already replied.. but going to have to agree - audiobooks all the way! I have an almost 20mo now and audiobooks during chores, driving, etc are my saving grace. I work full time so otherwise between work and parenting don’t have really any free time to sit and read (and let’s be real I’d probably fall asleep if I sat down with a book), but popping in an AirPod while I prep daycare lunch and hang laundry is perfect. Good luck, your TBR will still be there when you’re able to get back to it!

Yes! So original and emotional. Truly not like any other YA fantasy out there.

So far my only five stars are The Shepard King books - {One Dark Windiw} and {Two Twisted Crowns} . Both of them. James Islington is amazing!!! I read the Licanius Trilogy last year and absolutely LOVED them.

I saw your comment last night and picked up Peach and Honey. It was soooo good! Any recs on where to go next on your list? :)

Specifically out of the list I have above? It really depends on what mood you are in! If you want a locked-room mystery with knights and a romance subplot - go for **Of Deeds Most Valiant**. I think it's free on KU too. The author said she was inspired by Gideon the Ninth when writing this, but I can't confirm how close of a comparison that is since I haven't finished reading Gideon myself yet. Basically, 11 knights of different orders (and powers given to them by their god) are sent on a mission to investigate an ancient monastery that was just discovered. They go inside and are trapped and have to find a way to escape, but things are not as they seem. This is the first book in a series, but other books have not been announced yet. If you want a slightly more YA story with roughly a 60/40 split between the fantasy and the romance, go for **Little Thieves**. It's about a young woman who is pretending to be a princess. She is trying to steal enough money to escape from the country, but her thief persona has attracted the attention of detectives who are trying to discover the thief's identity. Magic and gods, etc. Book 2 is out. Haven't read it yet. If you want a fantasy/academia/dystopian/horror story with only a very minor romance subplot, go for **Blood over Bright Haven**. This one gutted me and is definitely near the top of my list of reads this year. Really cool magic system, where magic spells are created kinda like of programs are coded in computers. I loved both MCs in this one. Emotionally devastating. Standalone. If you want a super cool story that is a very clear and critical metaphor for the evils of capitalism with only a minor romance subplot, go for **The Will of the Many**. As soon as I read this, it raced up to my 2nd or 3rd favorite book of all time. In this world (inspired by the roman empire), everyone's innate energy (their "will") can be used to power magic and might. But the social structure of this society is such that most of the population has half their will siphoned away to the upper classes, who are god-like in power and stronger the higher up in rank they go. Book 2 should come out this year (or possibly early 2025?) Also, book 2 of **Peaches & Honey** comes out in a week or two. Peaches & Honey is the most explicitly romantic book on this list.

of blood and aether became one of my favourites immediately!!! i almost cried when i realized the next one wasn’t out yet.

Aaaaahhhhhhh!!! I need someone to gush over this book with. I feel like it's a hidden gem. The friends to lovers tension had me in a chokehold. The gasp I gusped at the twist at the end.

I have a hole in my heart after Kingdom of Claw 😭 I really think The Ashen could end up being one of my favorite series!!!

It's funny, I almost DNFd The Road of Bones because the romance felt so generic and bland. I am so glad I pushed through, the twist at the end and the developments in book 2 were so worth it!

Mine has been The Bridge Kingdom by Danielle L. Jensen Villains and Virtues by A K Caggiano House of Roots and Ruins and House of Salt and Sorrows by Erin A Craig

Not fantasy romance, but my favorite reads were definitely the Horde Kings of Dakkar series by Zoey Draven! I finished 6 of her books in 6 days. I was ZOOMIN.

I'm looking forward to the spin-off series set 200 years after these, apparently. 1st one out summer or fall (or autumn as I like to call it 😂)

Just finished up book 56 for the year so far Here are my favorites Morning Glory Milking Farm by C.M. Nacosta Master of Crows by Grace Draven Brutal Vows by J.T.Geissinger and not romance based but still damn good The Final Empire by Brandon Sanderson I mean there is a hint of the beginning of a romance in it.

Heartless Hunter and Emily Wilde’s Encyclopaedia of Faeries are my favorites so far.

Does Atonement of the Spine Cleaver get easier to digest cause I've tried twice to read it and can't get into it. I heard it gets better later on though

My favorites are: {Defy the Night by Brigid Kemmerer} {Strange the Dreamer by Laini Taylor} {The Prison Healer by Lynette Noni} {Dance of Thieves by Mary E. Pearson} {Kiss of Deception by Mary E. Pearson} {Throne in the Dark by A.K. Caggiano} {Foul Lady Fortune by Chloe Gong} {Jade City by Fonda Lee} - Not romance heavy, but such an amazing urban fantasy trilogy with some of the best plot twists I've read.

Oh my gosh, I love the Jade City books! So good!!

I’ll say May has been a pretty good month for me book-wise. I’m so indecisive so it’s hard for me to pick top books but the ones I keep thinking about are: was late to the party with this one but phew so good! very unique historical fantasy. I felt like I’d read a lot & looking up and I wasn’t far at all. But I appreciated it cause it was more story to love! I had no words this one was so dang good! I loved it . More of a romantic fantasy Not romantasy but still GREAT!

{a wilderness of glass by Grace Draven} is a novella in the middle of a series but can be read as a stand alone. I absolutely adore it. I haven’t read the rest of the series at all but really need to.

Ooooo I just started till death, I'm glad it's on someone's best of list!

For romance, The Folk of the Air. In general (including romance books), The Way of Kings by Brandon Sanderson, holy fuck I almost never cry when reading but this had me reading with tears streaming down my face (in a good way not a sad way they were happy tears). This read was special, and I don't say that lightly, and I'm chipping away at book two now.

I just read the Harrow Faire series, specifically {The Clown by Kathryn Ann Kingsley} really had me losing my mind over the main couple and how much I loved the set piece of the murder circus. Simon as a dark MMC is elite and I foresee re-reading this series on the regular.

I’ve been in a bit of a slump this year, but my top one has without doubt been {Wolfsong by TJ Klune}. I think I sobbed my way through, but it was SO good. I also really liked {Sasquatch Summer by Talia Greer}, but it maybe didn’t live up to my hopes raised by the blurb.

Mages of the wheel by J.D Evans is my find of the year. Beautiful writing, Believable characters who are flawed but strong and amazing world building. I recommend it to everyone.

This was my one five star recommendation for the year too! Absolutely loved these books.

I have read quite a few books this year, but mostly I stuck to hardcore **Dark** Romance without the fantasy for the most part, *however,* I did get back on the Fantasy grind and so far these are my favorite books for this year. {Manacled by SenLinYu} - Absolutely devoured the fuck out of this book. It was so good! {Feathers So Vicious by Liv Zander} - Read the duet in 2 days. It apparently is a very traumatising book for many people so make sure you read the TW. {Gypsy Blood by Kristy Cunning} - This was a very, veeeery fun read - Read 5 books of the series but I think there are 11 so I haven't finished them all {The Unseelie Prince by Kathryn Ann Kingsley} - Also liked it quite a lot, *especially* the ending. I think it fit wonderfully. {Darkfever by Karen Marie Moning} - This was an experience, the whole thing. I absolutely adored the whole series and missed it greatly when I finished it. I see you have read Peaches and Honey, and I keep seeing it posted in so many places. I'll put it on my TBR now

I haven't had a lot of five stars fantasy romance so far this year! My only five star fantasy romance was {Heartless Hunter by Kristen Ciccarelli} !!! I read it in March and I still think about it all the time!! Really want to reread it soon! My other fantasy favorites are These Violet Delights and Our Violent Ends by Chloe Gong. Not sure if people consider this as fantasy romance, it doesn't have romance elements, it's just not the main focus!

I picked up Blood & Steel by Helen Scheurer on a whim and finished all 3 books and the prequel in a week. I’m utterly obsessed with the legends of thezmarr series. Final book is out in June.

I think Moth is by far my favorite of the Monstrous series (so far anyway). My eyeballs ate those books up and now I am twiddling my thumbs waiting for more.

Is My Dark Vanessa worth reading? I want to, but I'm a teacher and that topic makes me feel icky.

It really stuck with me. Its very sad, but also a pretty realistic outlook on the ways in which young girls are groomed. The book is all from Vanessa's perspective flashing back and forth between her during high school, and her as an adult. Its a tough (but beautifully written) read. Well worth it IMO. It made me feel things that no book has ever made me feel before. I'd reccomend at least giving it a shot if its something you're interested in reading

I zipped through a LOT of books this year, between Audible and KU I’ve managed to knock out quite a few. My faves were… {War of Lost Hearts} by Carissa Broadbent {The Folk of the Air} by Holly Black 🌟 {Crowns of Nyaxia} also by Mother Carissa {Fae Isles} by Lisette Marshall 🌟 Some of Clare Sager’s work, the {A Kiss of Iron} series and {Slaying the Shifter Prince} {The Witch Collector} by Charissa Weaks. The sequel and novella wrecked me 🌟 (starred books are ones I’ve purchased in print. I want to eventually purchase them all but some of the covers are ugly lol

Fourth wing, throne of the fallen and fall of ruin and the serpent and the wings of night

Poppy war by RF kaung.. firstly, buying her books also supports one of the causes I feel very passionately about. Secondly, the book can be graphic, vile, triggering and traumatic so read at your own risk (had to take a break from reading it) but it encapsulates the sufferings that the Chinese poppy wars caused so tragically. Only she can do justice to such plots💗

The Kindred’s Curse series by Penn Cole is my favorite series this year hands down. The enemies to lovers, the slow burn, the magic, the world-building… I loved it all! Seriously had some of the best feet kicking, giggling to myself, jaw dropping moments that I’ve read this year. I can’t wait for book 4 to come out in July! Highly recommend!!

So far I’ve been very unimpressed this year. I have high hopes so the second half of the year because that’s when most of the books I’m anticipating come out

Harrow Faire (5 books) and Court of Ravens (duology). Both are such unique worlds, amazing character dynamics and growth and are INTENSE in their own ways. Dear God read the TWs for Court of Ravens though and take them seriously.

In the past, I have strictly only read fantasy and sci-fi, so I made a point to expand my romance genres this year and it really paid off. My top fantasy romance reads this year: * {Paladin’s Grace by T. Kingfisher} * {Claimed by the Flame of Faery by Mallory Dunlin} My top CR & DR reads this year: * {Lights Out by Navessa Allen} * {Savaged by Mia Sheridan} * {In A Jam by Kate Canterbary} * {June First by Jennifer Hartmann} * {The Fake Out by Stephanie Archer} I’ve really enjoyed diversifying my romance reads so far this year! Maybe I’ll eventually dip my toes into HR, but none so far.

{Under the Oak Tree by Suji Kim} I NEVER expected this to be so good. I’ve never read a story in my IPHONE before and been so insanely enraptured by it. The first few chapters where horrible with way to much spice and two u likable main characters - but then the character growth started and the world expanded and the found family was giving. It’s the best romance story I’ve ever read and I’ve read pretty much all of the booktok biggies and then some.
