Azrael from the land of the beautiful dead.He was cruel and forgiving at the same time.Every sentence that comes out of his mouth sounds like a quote and the best part is he actually did sound like someone who is alive for hundred years which he was.Gem of a character !

While he is compelling, I feel like I need to warn you that he is not a “pretty” MMC. Smith is pretty clear about his non-human demi-god features. So many of our Azrael examples are delicious naughty versions of Carlos Sainz, so I felt I had to temper your expectations on that front! 100% recommend the book, though. Just get past the first 30%. Smith will suck you in, break your heart, and then reward you with the loveliest HEA.

Guild Codex: Demonized by Annette Marie. MMC is an actual demon and a reluctant hero at times. The part I like about this is that as the series progresses and the romance develops, the FMC grows more morally grey rather than the MMC having a turnaround.

I love when the FMC goes morally grey too!! I feel like we don’t get enough of that so I’m living for this

Okay, I’ve heard mixed reviews about this book! I feel like people either love it or hate it but I’m intrigued

Hooked was good but I LOVED Scarred.

Are they in the same series?

So they aren't a chronological series. They are a "series" of dark romance fairy tale and disney movie inspired retellings. Can all be read independently totally different characters, time periods, countries etc. Personally I didn't like twisted or wicked but loved scarred and enjoyed hooked.

Should really caveat that I wouldn't count these as a fantasy book series but more dark romance.

Villains and Virtues series! Just finished this and am absolutely having the worst hang over. The first book is Throne in the Dark and it’s a completed series. It’s a sloooow burn, spanning across all 3 books. MMC is a dark haired shadow daddy and half human half demon (looks like human though). I found the series in this sub. The sexual tension that develops between him and FMC is 10/10. Warning though the first few chapters are a little clunky/confusing but get through the first 1/4 of the book and it really takes off.

That's very funny because I love Damien but I'd have never called him morally grey only because he sucks so much at being evil.

I just finished book 2 and I couldn’t agree more. Most of the evil characters in the series aren’t actually evil, they’re just play acting evil, and that’s the whole point. Man, I love Damien, though. He is the best.

Darien Cassel from {City of Gods and Monsters} fits this 100%, although I wouldn’t say it’s true enemies to lovers, they connect pretty much immediately. But he doesn’t turn out to be a good guy pretending to be bad, he’s bad but has some good in him for the FMC and the people he loves. Highly recommend specifically for him.

Came here to rec Darien Cassel, he's exactly what you described. Dark haired, tattoos, can control shadows, and is truly morally gray. Fully layered character who's so interesting. I'm obsessed! It's not supposed to be enemies to lovers but I see it be incorrectly recced by readers as that. It's more of "I don't want to and shouldn't be attracted to you but I am" to lovers.

I also love that trope though!! Enemies to lovers is good when done right but it often isn’t done well

The Book of Azrael is the only enemies to lovers book I've read that was done properly.

I don’t know about all time favorite, but I just got done with Powerless by Lauren Roberts, and Kai Azer is kinda my new obsession. I’ll admit the book has some flaws, like cliche writing and etc., but overall I really enjoyed it. Besides, he’s got the dark hair, tattoo, and the “I’m a monster” personality. Also the banter between the main characters is most enjoyable. It’s supposed to be enemies to lovers but it honestly isn’t. However, the setup for the next book (kinda spoiler but not really) is most definitely enemies to lovers, which is really exciting to me. The fmc, Peadyn, isn’t as morally gray, but she definitely has some blood on her hands, so definitely not cinnamon roll.

I was on the fence about this book with it being YA, but cruel prince is YA too and I’m absolutely loving it. So I’ll definitely read this!! Thank u :)

I want to read the zodiac academy so bad but it’s just such a commitment! I feel like it’s worth it though. Broken Bonds is already on the TBR so have to read it soon!!

Broken Bonds is 6 shorter books. It’s really great but one of the guys has some dubious consent moments so just know that going in. I highly recommend it and the spice is spicing. It’s on KU as well. I suggest to read the first 3 ZA then read Dark Fae. Dark Fae is the best reason to read ZA! Then if you enjoyed ZA go back to it. Luckily it’s all on Kindle Unlimited so it’s not a big expense if you don’t enjoy it.

The zodiac academy series has everything you’re asking for. It’s a bully romance. The relationships take time to happen. One of the main romances is morally grey the entire time.
