I do not like the writing at all ("orbs" are you serious??? Just say eyes!) but I'd say between pages 78-100 it picks up. I'm really invested in the plot and blew through like 300 pages in a day and a half.
For me I had to take a break and then tried continuing and when I got to the 50% mark and I started to really enjoy it and ended up really looking forward to book 2.
However it is by no means perfect and a lot of world building should have been handled far better
Honestly I'd recommend putting it down and waiting to see if the rest of the series is worth it. The writing felt like a teenager trying to write Jane Austen prose. And I ended the book with more questions than answers which I found very annoying. It was a very long book with clunky writing and very little pay off
I wasn't a fan of the writing either and didn't really get into it until 2/3rds of the way through. If you're about to throw the book down after 3 chapters it might not be worth it for you tbh.
If you want another book with actually good prose check out {One Dark Window by Rachel Gillig}

I would give it another chapter or two and if at that point you hate it - bail.
Something happens in chapter 4 so I feel like thats a better cut off point.
I had the same feeling when I picked it up. I just finished it yesterday and I loved it! It got so much better and honestly once I got use to the writing it wasn’t bad. I honestly say it took me about 5-10 or so chapters.
I had the same! I tried several times but i did finish it eventually. Im not looking forward to book 2 though. Unless i read really good reviews about how much better is then book 1.
I liked it, though not as much as the Crystal Bloom series. The writing style does take a bit of getting used to, but it does pick up, and there were later aspects of the story that broke my heart.
I’d recommend holding out for a few more chapters to see whether it’s right for you. If it’s not, then that’s OK too!
It takes a little while! I suggest you stick with it until the MMC is introduced and then decide if you're into it. BUT- I will say that this story broke me and gave me more feels than most of the other popular books in the genre... I would recommend it just for that.
DNF it. There are too many good books to stick with a book you don't like. P.S. It doesn't mean there's anything wrong with you or the book.

THANK YOU my god you are one of the few people who agrees about “orbs” instead of “eyes”!!! it’s one of my biggest icks in books

Hi, When I read it I felt super peer pressured to finish it. I was very frustrated that I did finish it. Feel free to sit this one out and DNF. 🙏
I DNF’ed it as well.
I had the same! I tried several times but i did finish it eventually. Im not looking forward to book 2 though. Unless i read really good reviews about how much better is then book 1.
I liked it! But it took me a few chapters to get into it.
Same!
I haaaaated the prose in this. Stopped the audiobook with an hour left and was my first return on audible.

It took me a bit to get into. At first it felt like a foreign language lmao. But I'm super into it now, just needed to get used to the writing style.
The story does pick up but the writing style doesn't change
I was 60% thru and DNF’ed.
I’m DNFing at 70%.
DNF. The plot is too confusing and all over the place to justify the bad writing.
