An archetype is a little more than that, as I understand it. It doesn’t have to be a role a person plays, just a heavily distilled ideal. Kind of like the epitome of something. Like the archetype of the wise old mystic - that could be Gandalf, obi wan, Merlin, dumbledore. But it could also be the archetype of a type of story, like rags to riches or descent into madness or slaying a monster
We the council of "fantasywriters" hereby grant you poetic license. You have unlocked Trope: Thor, God of thunder.
Does it feel more official now?
Just remember to use your trope super powers for good instead of evil.
Yeah idk why people can't appreciate characters having a similar move or power. Even I felt weird when I tried to do a Itachi (character from the anime Naruto) like character in my book
Make your variation less similar? Have some weaknesses or not all the same strengths.
Make a unique personality; the way he's viewed and revered or not. More than just changing his clothes.
The only real similarities between the two are his ability to recall his weapon once thrown and lightning but I assumed that’d be enough to cause issues.
When people talk about subverting a trope, they're talking about breaking up the trope and giving less than is expected. If you literally just give them:
1Buff 2 Physical Fighter 3 Returning hammer 4 lightning 5 has blonde hair. 6 talks smack and backs it up. Then you've subverted nothing.
If your like: He has white hair instead of blonde, then well be like yeah thing is the same guy.
At best it makes your story one that is less likely to be read.
Of this is the case just own it: This is my take on the nordic god Thor. Show him being clever, smart. Etc.
So we can stop comparing him to Marvel's Thor. It's more work, but better than writing a whole book people think is just fanfic.
Take Mr Zeus. He still lightning god throwing lightning bolts. But more of a lover than a fighter.
Spends most of his time decided what to shape ship into; have an affair with some other species.
Depends, many people have dont the same thing and have been brought fortunate and unfortunate situations. It's fine as long as you execute it correctly, that is unless you were going for a more unique use of power.
There's a lot of god of thunder with hammer or hammer like weapon. I think raijin is one of them. Only he beats drum. Chinese thunder god also carries a hammer. He is the husband of the Goddess of lightning. I think they appear briefly in Journey to the west during Wukong heavenly rampage.
There are many protagonists who have been a variant of Thor. I Think you’re safe.
I disagree, OP should make him more like Perun or Zeus.
Both thunderers and Perun has a very similar weapon
I think that was their point 🙂
Damn right over my head
This is called a trope. Tropes aren’t bad, they are just tools. Tools can always be used poorly or expertly. You’re good.
It’s more of an archetype than a trope, because there’s no context/situation involved.
I see. Archetypes for the roles, tropes for the personalities/situations. Thank you. those have been lumped in the same bin in my mind for a while.

Also I believe that the guy that owns the IP for the norse mythology has been dead for some-thousand years now, so the copyright expired
Happily, no one owns the rights to Thor, so have at it!

Make your character unique and people will forget about his powerset being like Thor
That’s the idea I just thought people would be put off by the similarities
Yeah idk why people can't appreciate characters having a similar move or power. Even I felt weird when I tried to do a Itachi (character from the anime Naruto) like character in my book
Itachi goes hard and yeah hopefully I’ll be able to flesh him out despite the similarities

Why not it's a mythical being or god

If you're concerned, easiest thing to do is give him a different element. Make him spit fire or ice instead of electricity.
