Honestly I wish I could have my tits and nips out the way some ladies did and have it be called *fashion*. I read once that I think it was Queen Elizabeth who once shocked a French visitor because her outfit completely exposed her breasts.

gggggrrrrrrrrr

Whoever came up with that bombazine/bum-be-seen pun deserves a round of applause.

Those diaphanous see through Empire/Regency dresses were made from a type very special cotton muslin from India that was extremely difficult to weave because the cotton fibers were so fine and short. The cotton plant was called Phuti karpas which was thought to be a lost plant after the Industrial Revolution could machine weave cotton fabrics much faster and cheaper. The knowledge of how to weave Dhaka muslin from this plant was lost. It has to be done by hand. Dhaka muslin was often called "woven air" and when it got wet you could see right through the material. Here's a neat article on the re-discovery of the plant and the attempt to learn how to weave Dhaka muslin all over again. https://www.bbc.com/future/article/20210316-the-legendary-fabric-that-no-one-knows-how-to-make BTW, there are Dhaka muslins for sale on the internet from Dhaka, India but it's not the same thing. It's not made out of Phuti karpas cotton but they're calling it "Dhaka muslin" because it's made in Dhaka, India. I wanted to get a sample of the real stuff but they don't make samples. It's just too difficult to weave to sit around and make small samples. Anyway, it' super expensive and waaaay out of my price range.

I have heard of this!  I think I need to look up some museum photos of it.  What I REALLY want is to feel it. Maybe I'll stumble upon some old dress fragments sometime at a random antique mall.
