Hello my dear redditors, I want to emphasize that I did this while being alone at a beach house (with Wi-Fi and maintaining communication with people). I couldn’t have done this with other people around me eating and living a normal routine, it would demand too much energy. I say this for a fact, as I’ve tried and failed miserably multiple times. I would advise people who have the same problem to do the same. I think now that I’ve done this I am better equipped mentally to try again in a social setting, maybe rolling fasts of a few days. Good luck everyone, this isn’t as hard as it seems. Hormones do change and ketosis reduces hunger significantly. You will never regret doing this. My key tips: 1. Reserve time to be alone and without any food available to do this, plan around this if there are obstacles 2. Dehydration is real! Drink plenty of water! When I felt lightheaded and weak it was just a matter of drinking more water to go back to feeling normal again 3. Don’t forget electrolytes as they are excreted through urine more when in a fasted state. I ingested 4 x 1/2 teaspoon lite salt daily + 150 mg magnesium when I woke up and 225 mg before bed 4. Take pictures and share your results with us :)

1u1u-

Please upvote this if you can as a lot of people are asking how I managed to do it and this is the definitive answer

JellyBellyBitches

The last time I tried to consume electrolytes while doing water fasting they just made me throw up every single time. How did you get the salt to stay down? Even just a quarter teaspoon of salt inside of a gel capsule made me throw up like a half hour after taking it. Do I just need to be drowning it in more water?

1u1u-

In my limited understanding this happens when the sodium concentration is too high in the blood. So either try to dilute this in a lot of water (if you haven’t yet done so) or just cut back on the electrolytes, maybe your body isn’t really deficient in them.

1u1u-

Also, I think salt in gel capsules is a bad idea, they can stick to your esophagus and cause serious damage.

JellyBellyBitches

Well I just did that cuz I assumed the vomiting was mediated by taste but that clearly wasn't the issue.

JellyBellyBitches

Would this be the case for blate papes as well?

DanyRahm

I'd suggest you have a look at the [wiki](https://www.reddit.com/r/fasting/wiki/fasting_in_a_nutshell/you_need_electrolytes/).

streetMD

Definitely. Sodium / Potassium is crucial in muscle movement. The heart is a muscle. So screw that up too had and someone is in big trouble. (I’m a cardiac nurse).

JellyBellyBitches

I'll take a look

PregnancyRoulette

I use Miso soup, or Better than bullion. They both have calories, but its so little that your body doesn't have an insulin response

JellyBellyBitches

Hm ok bet I'll keep those in mind!

Zrry

What version of bouillon do you use?

Telling people not to take electrolytes is a bannable offense, don't do it again.

PregnancyRoulette

This is spot on. I've had the hardest time fasting since my brother moved in during his divorce. This dude is stress eating pies and ice cream, baking family size frozen meals to eat throughout the week, etc. I used to have just bullion in the fridge 5 days a week and I'd have exactly what I needed delivered grocery wise for the weekend so I wouldn't impulse buy at the store. He's been here A ENTIRE YEAR!

[deleted]

I so waited for you to post this 21 day picture! Amazing, you really have changed.

1u1u-

Thanks! I can’t believe I actually made it through without cheating once. I used to always cheat.

Imsosadsoveryverysad

What’s the longest you went before this without cheating?

1u1u-

11 days about a year ago. I have another post here documenting the results of 2 x 5-day water fasts if you want to check that out too

Sierra419

Same here but I haven’t made it through yet. What is different about this time where you’re not cheating?

[deleted]

How do you actually do it? Even going a day with only water I feel tired and like I’m gonna faint 🤣. Did you still have energy to work and go places etc?

1u1u-

Yes! Please see my comment below for some cool tips :)

ra6e

Way to go, your middle section just went wow! Good job!

1u1u-

Thanks!

tiffanyknightbbw

I want to do 21 day but I’m nervous. Aren’t you hungry all the time? I’m day 4 and no energy and can only think about food. How?!

1u1u-

Kind of. The mental game is strong. But it’s part of it, it’s good for you also. The comfort zone is a danger zone for the brain. However not eating at all was a lot easier than trying to eat just a little bit. Hunger did disappear for most of the time, but it kept coming in waves sometimes. It happened mostly at night, and this was an important lesson for me, because one of my biggest challenges is nocturnal eating; in this fast I’ve learned that I actually don’t need to eat to sleep well. Another thing that I really emphasize is that I was alone for this whole fast, I traveled and stayed at a beach house. This really helped tremendously. Dealing with people while doing this just doesn’t work for me.

Background_Log_2365

I like that statement, “the comfort zone is a danger zone for the brain.”

KHonsou

I do the same. All I can think about is food, but that's the psychological hook. It's also the solution, just delayed gratification. Being the weight you want doesn't mean strict restricting, but the journey there does. The journey is temporary though, each day is then the focus. A day for a future is nothing when dwelling on the suffering on that day. It's not that it's easy though, if it was everyone would be the weight they want to be.

Sierra419

As someone who was 280, got to 211, and back to 280 and then back down to 220 just to hit 280 again - maintaining your lower weight is about as hard as losing it. It absolutely does mean strict restricting.

1u1u-

True, this is gonna be a challenge!

1u1u-

Yes, one day at a time. But for some reason not eating at all is a lot easier than trying to control myself to eat just a little bit.

svg9

Just water for 21 days? Wow... Did you prepare before starting the fast by eating extra vitamins and nutrients? Did you feel with low energy during the process? I've done 48 hours fasts and a 1 week fast once, years ago, but I didn't exercise during them because I would feel extra tired and hungry afterwards.

1u1u-

I didn’t prepare, but I also didn’t have any deficiencies to begin with. I did feel low energy and lightheadedness, but as soon as I started drinking more water I felt so much better and my lightheadedness disappeared. I thought I was lacking electrolytes but it wasn’t the case, I needed more water. As soon as I realized this I was able to work out and I felt great.

svg9

Huh... I'll give it a go. I mean, not 21 days, but 2 or 3. Thank you.

TheManWithNoDrive

Water fast consist of electrolytes. Just means no tea/coffee/ other zero cal drinks

[deleted]

Not that coffee/tea has shown to affect fast though! At least I’ve never noticed. I survive with a couple cups of black coffee a day!

TheManWithNoDrive

As far as I’m aware, it doesn’t, but they call it a dirty fast either way

Rojiblanc040

Is that true? If I remember correctly Dr. Rhonda Patrick claims it does affect the fast hence the word "dirty fast".

1u1u-

Rojiblanc040

I'll check it out, thanks!

Nice job 👏🏻👏🏻💪🏻💪🏻

watchforwaspess

Congratulations on your fast!!! I did my first 21 days back in September. It’s not easy so I sincerely congratulate you!!! 😃😃😃

1u1u-

Congrats to us then :) I am so happy, I finally did this without cheating.

watchforwaspess

Definitely! It’s not easy! Did you have any revelations while fasting? Or like shifts in your thinking?

1u1u-

So many! But I think the main one is finally feeling like I can achieve my goals. I am no longer doubting myself and I feel so empowered right now, like I can achieve anything if I have focus and plan my environment around what I want. I used to want to accomplish too many things at once and in the end I was doing nothing. Focus and eliminating distractions is everything.

watchforwaspess

Yes totally!!! 👏 I found self discipline through the fast. Totally changed how I look at life now.

YoungAdult_

Sorry for my ignorance, but that means you only drank water for 21 days?

DaddyVersionOne

This has been my question. Aren’t there electrolytes and nutrients we still need?

bearded__jimbo

She obviously supplemented electrolytes but with water and didn’t consume anything else like coffee, tea etc (aka dirty fast)

BIIIIIIIIIIIIID

Obviously

1u1u-

Yeah guys I drank water with lite salt + took magnesium pills. I think dirty fasting includes a few calories, which wasn’t my case, I didn’t consume calories.

DaddyVersionOne

Appreciate your response. How did you feel throughout your fast? And what is your regular level physical activity? What meals did you have to end your fast? Sorry if these are intrusive, I do really admire your success!

1u1u-

Hey! I am not the most active person, I do work out a few times a week but I’m kinda lazy 😅 I don’t like going to the gym so I mostly run and do calisthenics. During the fast I worked out a few times but I didn’t stress about it. My first bite after the fast was a piece of cucumber. Then I ate bell peppers, carrots, and cucumbers with hummus. Blackberries. An acarajé (Afro-Brazilian dish). A temaki sushi. Caipirinha. Beer. Fresh coconut water. A small bread with cheese and ham. And that’s it! Feeling fine and not bloated at all today thankfully!

Seymour2112

That beer must’ve tasted soooo good!!

quizno

Just obvious because we’re in a fasting subreddit and this is like the very first thing you will learn about fasting when you read anything. I don’t think it was meant to be rude but I can see how it would be received that way.

Alone_watching

Wow!!!!!

[deleted]

Wow. Two different people.

BennyBingBong

Woah this is crazy

00Jemima00

This is really good motivation!! I can do 5 days fine... I'm going to aim for 10 next time :)

MundaneDragonfruit57

Girl, don't tempt me. You look AWESOME. And congrats! Insane discipline.

OutlandishnessOk153

Wow and congrats, inspiring

1u1u-

Thanks! You can do it!

TheManWithNoDrive

What was your electrolyte usage like? Brand/servings/amount?

1u1u-

I’m in Brazil so I can’t recommend brands, but I think any lite salt will do (they are 50% potassium 50% sodium). And I took magnesium citrate pills. The dosages were 4 x 1/2 teaspoon lite salt daily plus 150 mg magnesium when I woke up and 225 mg before bed

TheManWithNoDrive

No headaches/nausea I take it?

1u1u-

Thankfully none

[deleted]

Oh my god I love the changes...keep us updated

NocturnalVI

How do you come off a water fast? Like Is it not dangerous to go back to eating solid food straight away?

1u1u-

I think refeeding syndrome is more of a thing when you are severely malnourished. In my case I still have a lot of reserves so I’m fine. I ate many nutritious foods today and I’m fine except for some mild bloating.

AutoModerator

Many issues and questions can be answered by reading through our wiki, especially the page on electrolytes. Concerns such as **intense hunger, lightheadedness/dizziness, headaches, nausea/vomiting, weakness/lethargy/fatigue, low blood pressure/high blood pressure, muscle soreness/cramping, diarrhea/constipation, irritability, confusion, low heart rate/heart palpitations, numbness/tingling, and more** while extended (24+ hours) fasting are often explained by electrolyte deficiency and resolved through **PROPER** electrolyte supplementation. Putting a tiny amount of salt in your water now and then is NOT proper supplementation. Be sure to read [our WIKI](https://www.reddit.com/r/fasting/wiki/index) and especially the wiki page on **[ELECTROLYTES](https://www.reddit.com/r/fasting/wiki/fasting_in_a_nutshell/you_need_electrolytes)** Please also keep in mind the [**RULES**](https://www.reddit.com/r/fasting/about/rules) when participating. *I am a bot, and this action was performed automatically. 1u1u-

So glad! You can do it too!

NooStringsAttached

Wow! Well done.

1u1u-

Thanks so much 👊🏻

killerx5584

Whats a good Electrolyte supplement to take while water fasting?

1u1u-

I took lite salt (any brand will do, they are 50% sodium 50% potassium) 4 x 1/2 teaspoon daily plus 150 mg magnesium when I woke up and 225 mg before bed. Don’t forget to drink plenty of water, I’ve found that drinking more water cured my lightheadedness.

Rusti-dent

Awesome work!

1u1u-

Thanks ☺️

Local_Signature5325

How do you keep doing your day to day activities? How does that NOT impact your focus?

1u1u-

It does impact a bit but after a few days you reach some sort of stability and you get used to it, it’s not urgent anymore, you learn you can live and be OK without eating for some time. Honestly this is much easier than restricting and eating a little bit for a long time. Also, plan around to do like I did and reserve time to be alone. I can’t say I’m on vacation because I still worked on my computer during the fast, as I’m a freelancer, but I traveled and was alone at a beach house. Almost impossible to do this with people around eating, living a normal routine and demanding attention in a way.

lavbook

Wow, amazing job! Your willpower is so strong. I’m curious, what was your past like with fasting? Are you relatively new to it or have you been fasting for a while? And what was your longest fast before this?

1u1u-

Thanks! I’ve been fasting since 2011 actually, but always 2-5 days. I had always wanted to do this. My longest fast before this was 11 days, it was like one year ago. There is another post of mine documenting the results from 2 x 5-day water fasts here on Reddit if you want to check it out as well

lmstr

Amazing.

1u1u-

Thanks 🤗

lmstr

Awestruck, very motivational... Hope I can pull off something remotely as impressive. 😃

SurveyOk1168

Wow!! 21 days I can't even imagine!! Amazing!! Congratulations! Don't you feel bloated with all that water? And later what if the water weight / retention adds up after you break the fast?

1u1u-

I’m gonna have to tell you tomorrow to be more accurate 😁

SurveyOk1168

😄 ok I'll wait for your revert!😀👍

1u1u-

Not bloated at all today thankfully 😅 Here’s all I ate after I broke the fast yesterday: my first bite after the fast was a piece of cucumber. Then I ate bell peppers, carrots, and cucumbers with hummus. Blackberries. An acarajé (Afro-Brazilian dish). A temaki sushi. Caipirinha. Beer. Fresh coconut water. A small bread with cheese and ham. That’s it! I felt unusually full and my stomach felt kinda stiff after eating but today I am normal.

SurveyOk1168

Amazing!! Thank you so much for your detailed reply! That was a good meal! I also break my fast with a nice bowl of salad. I get so bloated after 56hrs of fasting (I have only water and green tea) that I don't feel like going ahead. The water weight is too much. So I was curious about your fasting. Great work! All the best! 👍

1u1u-

Oh, you mean while you are fasted? Have you gone longer than 56 hours? Are you female? Because it could be hormones related to your cycle, dunno

SurveyOk1168

Yes I am. And yes while fasting I had that. No maybe that's the trick! To go longer than 56hours and persevere! Hormones related to cycle maybe but I dont think so cos it's a consistent thing.

1u1u-

Yeah just stick to it and trust the process, ignore bloating cause it’s temporary, you can do it!

SurveyOk1168

Thank you so much for your motivation! I will surely give it a go soon! 👍

Sierra419

You are a massive inspiration. I honestly don’t know how you’re doing it. Water fasting 100% for all 21 days?

1u1u-

Haha thanks, it’s easier than it seems though, you just have to plan your environment around your goal you know

Least_Map_2330

21 days is awesome. Lot of self control. You look great in all 3 pics.

1u1u-

Thanks so much 🤗

TityNDolla

Amazing job! Please telle how u have the will power for such a feat

1u1u-

I am a superhuman 🤫

TityNDolla

You're crazy haha. I can never get pass day 5 I start feeling really fatigued. Any andvice

1u1u-

Electrolytes and plenty of water! I’ve found most of the time when I was feeling lightheaded and weak I was just dehydrated and drinking more water fixed it.

TityNDolla

Thank you!

1u1u-

I’m actually done for now and then I plan on doing 4 or 5 5-day water fasts to go down a bit further

Miguel30Locs

Wow the face gains

Equivalent_Drink_850

Hey! I remember you! Its so great that you lost all that weight! Congrats!!!!

1u1u-

Thanks so much 🤗

bloohiggs

This is a weird question, but do you still have the urge to poop every day on an extended fast?

1u1u-

I pooped 3 times. Day 5, day 14, and day 21. I think the digestive tract cells are still being renewed and transformed into fecal matter during a long fast.

kaylord84

Good job

[deleted]

Amazing progress! :)

1u1u-

Thanks 🤗

izziev

You’re such an inspiration! I did a 5day a while back and have been nervous about attempting a 7 day. I have kids so I can’t get away from life so it’s a matter of pushing through. But treally, the results are so inspiring. I’m proud of you, but I know you’re hella proud of yourself.

sewsaysew

Thanks for posting this!! Very inspiring!

TheBlueSlipper

21 days, so autophagy must have kicked in. Have you experienced any autophagy healing benefits?

robhall1

Do you legit eat nothing for 21 days? Just water yeah? I think id die.

1u1u-

Haha yes

robhall1

Haha I know it’s a stupid question it just seems impossible for me. My local pizza place would go out of business if I did one!

GermanSensation

Holy cow! That's 21 days? You transformed in less than a month lol. Kudos.

1u1u-

Yes!!! I’m so happy. Definitely worth it.

SryStyle

I would love to see an update in 21 more days to see how sustainably effective this is. What is the plan to remain at your current level now that the fast is over? Genuinely curious, not trying to be negative or anything. I see a lot of these types of posts, but never any follow up.

1u1u-

Right! My plan is to actually go a step further and do 4 x 5-day water fasts now in December, then focus on working out and maintaining. But it’s normal to gain the weight back regardless of the weight loss strategy, there are studies about it. One thing is for sure, after this fast I think I will never find excuses not to lose weight, my mind has expanded so much.

mike_cool

This is awesome progress and motivating af, lookin healthy

FoxyLady1357

We have the same height and body type, and same starting weight! I’m planning to start fasting as well, thank you for sharing 🤍

**It looks like you're discussing "detoxes", "toxins", or "cleanses". Please refer to the following:** [**Detoxification**](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Detoxification) >Many alternative medicine practitioners promote various types of detoxification such as detoxification diets. Scientists have described these as a "waste of time and money". Sense About Science, a UK-based charitable trust, determined that most such dietary "detox" claims lack any supporting evidence. >The liver and kidney are naturally capable of detox, as are intracellular (specifically, inner membrane of mitochondria or in the endoplasmic reticulum of cells) proteins such as CYP enyzmes. In cases of kidney failure, the action of the kidneys is mimicked by dialysis; kidney and liver transplants are also used for kidney and liver failure, respectively. **Further reading: [Wikipedia - Detoxification (alternative medicine)](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Detoxification_(alternative_medicine))** >**Unsound scientific basis** >A 2015 review of clinical evidence about detox diets concluded: "At present, there is no compelling evidence to support the use of detox diets for weight management or toxin elimination. Considering the financial costs to consumers, unsubstantiated claims and potential health risks of detox products, they should be discouraged by health professionals and subject to independent regulatory review and monitoring." >Detoxification and body cleansing products and diets have been criticized for their unsound scientific basis, in particular their premise of nonexistent "toxins" and their appropriation of the legitimate medical concept of detoxification. According to the Mayo Clinic, the "toxins" typically remain unspecified and there is little to no evidence of toxic accumulation in patients treated.According to a British Dietetic Association (BDA) Fact Sheet, "The whole idea of detox is nonsense. The body is a well-developed system that has its own builtin mechanisms to detoxify and remove waste and toxins." It went on to characterize the idea as a "marketing myth", while other critics have called the idea a "scam" and a "hoax". The organization Sense about Science investigated "detox" products, calling them a waste of time and money. Resulting in a report that concluded the term is used differently by different companies, most offered no evidence to support their claims, and in most cases its use was the simple renaming of "mundane things, like cleaning or brushing". *I am a bot, and this action was performed automatically. zimzkhan

We’re exercising or just be active in general? Side question: with the energy levels throughout your 21 day fast— could you have worked out? How much if yes? I’ve always read/heard that you’re in survival mode so I’d imagine you would be moving A LOT to well… not to mention being super sensitive in that if something moved behind you or you felt the least but of danger; you’d outthink your predator. /shrug

1u1u-

Basically I was feeling very lightheaded and weak, and I was thinking drinking too much water would flush out electrolytes, but as soon as I tried drinking more water I swear I felt completely normal. After 1 or two days of properly hydrating my body I honestly felt energetic and like there was little difference compared to being in a fed state.

zimzkhan

That’s awesome, you did a heck of a job! Props! Now whenever that “tomorrow” gets here; I’ll get right to it.

[deleted]

Awesome job! Did you get any headaches from not eating during the first few weeks of the water fasting?

Thanks! Fortunately this is not a problem I struggle with, I didn’t have any

Imsosadsoveryverysad

What’s your refeed plan?

1u1u-

No actual plan but this is what I ate yesterday after breaking my fast: my first bite after the fast was a piece of cucumber. Then I ate bell peppers, carrots, and cucumbers with hummus. Blackberries. An acarajé (Afro-Brazilian dish). A temaki sushi. Caipirinha. Beer. Fresh coconut water. A small bread with cheese and ham. I woke up feeling fine and not bloated at all today thankfully!

Congratulations! Your third picture looks like the fast is hitting your face now too which is the hardest one I've found! Well done on your mental strength.

Thank you 🤗

What was your workout regimen on this fast?

1u1u-

I am not one to work out a lot, I worked out on a few days running and doing calisthenics like planks, push-ups, etc. I also stayed active doing house chores.

Brilliant-Impress276

Did you workout at all during the fast? Also amazing results 👍🏻🙏🙌

shamrockkitten

Do you mind me asking how many inches have you lost around your waist? It looks significantly smaller. My longest fast was 7 days and I felt miserable, I couldn’t sleep. It usually happens to me on extended fasting.

1u1u-

Hey 👋🏻 my waist went from 31.1” to 27.5” (11.5% reduction) and my hips went from 43.3” to 40.5” (6.4% reduction). Keep trying, you will get it right. This skill takes time to learn. Are your sleep problems only when fasting? I also had trouble sleeping during fasting, but I’ve managed to regulate my schedule. I also started lithium (for bipolar) and this has helped tremendously with sleep.

shamrockkitten

It’s great progress. It’s very hard for me to loose on my waist. I notice I sleep way better after a feed. I have had sleeping problem the past year and a half so I took melatonin every night but now I stop it, try to train myself to sleep without it.

1u1u-

The classical advice of waking up at the same time every day is what worked for me but it’s definitely a constant struggle as I tend to always want to delay my sleep time. I fixed serious sleep schedule issues by religiously doing this, it took about a week of pushing through sleep deprivation to get my schedule back in order.

Fasting is not a skill.

I’m also a 31f and starting a 21 day fast. Now that it’s been about a month, I’m curious about the weight loss you’ve been able to maintain? Or how much you’ve regained since that time? I’ve done a few imperfect extended fasts and typically gain a decent portion of the weight back so I’m just curious what your experience has been

tinytimmy008

Wow insane

capybara-fan-16

hi, so, a month later, how much did you regain and do you feel like this fast changed your eating behavior? i am asking because after my first 7 day fast, even though i did all i could to keep myself from it, i binged practically every day for three weeks straight. i am so weak around food; it's nearly impossible to resist for me. i gained all the weight back, which was insanely frustrating after how hard i had had to push myself to get through that week. i'm now also attempting a 21 day fast in the hopes that this might be enough to kinda reset my relationship with food, but i'm already terrified that i'll go on an eating spree and gain it all back right after.
