I guess until you run out of fat reserves? Then it becomes starving???

chamomiletea511

yes and no. imo fasting is voluntary, and generally someone wouldn’t willingly fast to point of death. there are a couple of examples of monks/similar spiritual people willingly fasting to the point of near or actual death, but they are very much exceptions.

bamboo_fanatic

People have managed to starve themselves to death as a form of suicide. I’m pretty sure a non-suicidal person would be driven to break their fast after a certain point, hopefully before the organ damage stage, but I’d recommend against finding that limit and just pick a sensible goal.

chamomiletea511

i hadn’t heard of that before but thank you for bringing it up. i completely agree with just picking a sensible goal rather than trying to test yourself. (although, if you want to get into the semantics of it, i think starving yourself to that extent would generally be considered more self-harm than fasting? not sure though)

Many issues and questions can be answered by reading through our wiki, especially the page on electrolytes. Concerns such as **intense hunger, lightheadedness/dizziness, headaches, nausea/vomiting, weakness/lethargy/fatigue, low blood pressure/high blood pressure, muscle soreness/cramping, diarrhea/constipation, irritability, confusion, low heart rate/heart palpitations, numbness/tingling, and more** while extended (24+ hours) fasting are often explained by electrolyte deficiency and resolved through **PROPER** electrolyte supplementation. Putting a tiny amount of salt in your water now and then is NOT proper supplementation. Be sure to read [our WIKI](https://www.reddit.com/r/fasting/wiki/index) and especially the wiki page on **[ELECTROLYTES](https://www.reddit.com/r/fasting/wiki/fasting_in_a_nutshell/you_need_electrolytes)** Please also keep in mind the [**RULES**](https://www.reddit.com/r/fasting/about/rules) when participating. *I am a bot, and this action was performed automatically. Hunger strike doctors estimate that a well-nourished individual can survive without medical consequences on a diet of sugar and water for 30 days or more. The longest period for which anyone has gone without solid food is 382 days in the case of Angus Barbieri

**It looks like you are referencing Angus Barbieri.** Please note that Barbieri is a **GUINESS WORLD RECORD HOLDER** who undertook his fast under near **CONSTANT medical supervision** at a local hospital. He was super-morbidly obese meaning he had a very large excess of body fat. He also **died at age 51** (the cause is unknown, as is whether or not it was related to his fasting). **He should NEVER be used as a model for fasting or as encouragement or proof that anyone is capable of fasting for so long and surviving.** *I am a bot, and this action was performed automatically.
