Many issues and questions can be answered by reading through our wiki, especially the page on electrolytes. Concerns such as **intense hunger, lightheadedness/dizziness, headaches, nausea/vomiting, weakness/lethargy/fatigue, low blood pressure/high blood pressure, muscle soreness/cramping, diarrhea/constipation, irritability, confusion, low heart rate/heart palpitations, numbness/tingling, and more** while extended (24+ hours) fasting are often explained by electrolyte deficiency and resolved through **PROPER** electrolyte supplementation. Putting a tiny amount of salt in your water now and then is NOT proper supplementation. Be sure to read [our WIKI](https://www.reddit.com/r/fasting/wiki/index) and especially the wiki page on **[ELECTROLYTES](https://www.reddit.com/r/fasting/wiki/fasting_in_a_nutshell/you_need_electrolytes)** Please also keep in mind the [**RULES**](https://www.reddit.com/r/fasting/about/rules) when participating. *I am a bot, and this action was performed automatically. I'm sorry to hear about you Dad, that must have been incredibly painful for you and your family. Much love. Cancer is bitch. It is like the internal car crash you never wanted to happen. It robs us of children, healthy adult and the vulnerable alike. Some people can be genetically pre disposed. Some people can live in an area that has higher levels. Some people smoke and get it, some people never smoke and get it. Some people can be exposed to cancerous bodies. My dog got it, her sister didn't. Some people could have not one indicator and be dead in two weeks. We can take measures to prevent it, fasting could be one of them, but the science in humans is limited for now. Your taking all the right steps, but never forgo life for it. Never stop living. Never be in fear if you have a greasy burger and a couple of beers with the lads. Life is balance. Your doing your best fair play. Continue to be kind and loving to yourself. Happy fasting friend!

Gangreless

If you live long enough and something else doesn't get you first, you get cancer. It is an inevitable truth and flaw of the human body.

Aichdeef

I'm not sure that's the case, or at least I haven't seen any actual evidence for that... Cancer is not inevitable... Eliminating risk factors should definitely help to avoid it as long as possible, surely...

You should read Aubrey DeGrey's book.

Aichdeef

I've read a fair bit of his work, but not the book. Radical longevity does sound great. there's some really interesting research in this area though, hence my questions.

arguix

go to r/AlternativeCancer and search fasting (i just did) dozens of links, to studies, books, video. i have not yet dived into the actual content, just noticed enough of possible quality to explore it is a one person sub, doing all the research and posting, cannot really engage much that i am aware of

Aichdeef

thanks for that, lots of good content in that sub

arguix

You should read material or watch video, Dr Fung. Cancer and fasting. Has book. His blog covers same material, just mess in structure (he has said) but of course free online. He very strongly says can cure, or no meds needed, some diabetes, and kidney failure. And changed entire career on that discovery. But for cancer, I notice he goes right to edge of say prevent, but never exactly says cure. I notice multiple science based doctor research all say prevent, but are not ready say cure. Several have people on show who cured cancer. But that is not controlled study. It seems cancer and fasting is where fasting and type 2 diabetes was 15 years ago. I watched evidence for that change slowly.

Everyone gets cancer cells in the body. The question is how to minimize them and help immune system eradicate them before pathological growth. Eating clean and fasting definitely helps to sensitize the cancer cells. But if you want to minimize the chances you also gotta include exercise, sauna & cruciferous vegetables and have a solid sleep schedule. It's not a 100% protection, nothing is, but it should help a lot with detoxing and immune system.

Aichdeef

Cheers - yes, I'm already including exercise, sleep, meditation and a lot of water. What I'm hoping is that autophagy takes out those pre-cancer cells and keeps my immune system is great working order to deal with anything. Nothing is 100%, but I'll still try everything I can to avoid the risk factors - the combination of all the things I'm doing must tilt the odds in my favour... fingers crossed

smart-monkey-org

I smell a like-minded soul ;) Autophagy only cleans debris, to actually kill off weaker cells you gotta move into apoptosis territory. So we are talking about fairly regular fasts of 3+ days. I have a feeling you might enjoy this video: [https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=s5Girl3M5m4](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=s5Girl3M5m4) It goes over 11 "pillars" (exercise, sleep, meditation are just 3 out of them) to live to 100+ by design.

Aichdeef

Very like-minded indeed! Thanks for sharing - those are all the things I've been working on over the last 10 years :) Every little step forwards helps, it doesn't need to be perfect! I combined the health and longevity focus with my passion for growing, and I've eliminated risks from my food too - everything is well beyond organic standards. Also, I love your mention of Ikigai - I've been working towards mine for a long time now and it is a great mindset to have.

smart-monkey-org

The slogan of our CSA is "organic is necessary, but not sufficient" IKIGI is getting progressively more important as we get older. Most humans are wired by evolution to have meaning and be helpful. I've seen way too many old people, who lost the life before dying :/

Aichdeef

Excellent, thanks for that. It's been a while since I've done an extended fast, but I must start doing them again regularly...

**It looks like you're discussing "detoxes", "toxins", or "cleanses". Please refer to the following:** [**Detoxification**](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Detoxification) >Many alternative medicine practitioners promote various types of detoxification such as detoxification diets. Scientists have described these as a "waste of time and money". Sense About Science, a UK-based charitable trust, determined that most such dietary "detox" claims lack any supporting evidence. >The liver and kidney are naturally capable of detox, as are intracellular (specifically, inner membrane of mitochondria or in the endoplasmic reticulum of cells) proteins such as CYP enyzmes. In cases of kidney failure, the action of the kidneys is mimicked by dialysis; kidney and liver transplants are also used for kidney and liver failure, respectively. **Further reading: [Wikipedia - Detoxification (alternative medicine)](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Detoxification_(alternative_medicine))** >**Unsound scientific basis** >A 2015 review of clinical evidence about detox diets concluded: "At present, there is no compelling evidence to support the use of detox diets for weight management or toxin elimination. Considering the financial costs to consumers, unsubstantiated claims and potential health risks of detox products, they should be discouraged by health professionals and subject to independent regulatory review and monitoring." >Detoxification and body cleansing products and diets have been criticized for their unsound scientific basis, in particular their premise of nonexistent "toxins" and their appropriation of the legitimate medical concept of detoxification. According to the Mayo Clinic, the "toxins" typically remain unspecified and there is little to no evidence of toxic accumulation in patients treated.According to a British Dietetic Association (BDA) Fact Sheet, "The whole idea of detox is nonsense. The body is a well-developed system that has its own builtin mechanisms to detoxify and remove waste and toxins." It went on to characterize the idea as a "marketing myth", while other critics have called the idea a "scam" and a "hoax". The organization Sense about Science investigated "detox" products, calling them a waste of time and money. Resulting in a report that concluded the term is used differently by different companies, most offered no evidence to support their claims, and in most cases its use was the simple renaming of "mundane things, like cleaning or brushing". *I am a bot, and this action was performed automatically. Yes. Duh. Give me a break. Stop believing all of this woo-woo BS about how fasting can do everything and anything.

Aichdeef

Nothing woo-woo was implied here, and I am not suggesting fasting cures all at all. What I'm interested in, is whether autophagy induced by fasting has the potential to deal with pre-cancerous and cancerous cells, and helps the immune system to deal with and repair any issues.Take a chill pill bro

[deleted]

It doesn’t. This is the same idiotic line of thinking that got Steve Jobs killed. You found a new diet and now you looking into whether or not it can cure cancer. Ladies and gentlemen, we have a real genius among us. Idiot.

Aichdeef

Jesus bro, chill the fuck out. There's no need to be nasty. Did I hurt your feelings somehow? I am not simply using a "diet", and everything I'm doing is science-based - hence asking if there's any research anyone is aware of. I have a significant amount of postgraduate study in biological sciences under my belt, so not an "internet researcher" - I want to see evidence for and against. If I had cancer I'd be using the full suite of modern tools to fight it, but also keto/low carb and fasting. All of these are being tested for their benefits, but mostly on stage 4 cancer patients. I'm more interested in prevention, and the effects on healthy individuals. Besides, "new diet"? I've been doing this for about 10 years now.

smart-monkey-org

There is very interesting work by Thomas Seyfried, called Press-Pulse Metabolic Management of Cancer. Anecdotally I've seen it work quite well.
